Why won't iTunes recognize some of my songs?

I can't figure out why iTunes will not recognize over 100 of my songs.  I recently purchased a 7th gen iPod to replace the other one which was stolen.  Never had a problem with anything before the new iPod was installed, registered etc.  Any advice?  Thanks

Hi dpjakob,
My interpretation of your question is that iTunes has lost its link to 100 of your songs. When tracks in iTunes display a it means the file cannot be located; it may have been moved or deleted. For this issue, we will need to refer to the following article:
iTunes: Finding lost media and downloads
http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1408
Alternatively, if your media was downloaded from the iTunes Store, you may be able to download it again free of charge:

  • Why won't iTunes play some songs from the cloud

I am traveling with my MacBook Pro and opened my iTunes library.  I have iTunes Match also.  Some of my albums have the cloud with the down-pointing arrow...but they won't play and when you click on it, nothing happens.  What am I missing?

I will try that on my Macbook Pro when I get home, if I can figure out how to do it (some more detailed instructions would help. . .).  The problem I'm having is songs I ripped from CDs into my iTunes library.  The songs and CDs are all available for purchase on iTunes, so I'm not talking about some obscure music. iTunes recognizes them.  Some of the songs from a given CD play; others do not.  In two cases, entire albums won't play.  were originally ripped from CDs into my iTunes library on an HP computer running Windows 7 (my Macbook doesn't have a CD drive).  All of the songs appear and play fine there.  However, the "grayed out" iCloud icon problem exists (and I can't play those songs) on my Macbook, my iPhone 5S or on my PC at work - which leads me to believe it's an iCloud or iTunes problem. . .

  • Upgraded to a Superdrive...why won't iTunes recognize it?

I recently had a guy install a Superdrive on my eMac. Now when I got to burn a CD or DVD in iTunes, I get a message that says: "Disc Burner or Software Not Found." Grrr. What should I do?

If patchburn doesn't fix it, you made need to open the case back up and double check the cables (ribbon and power cable). Make sure the cables are securely and correctly attached (generally the blue end of the ribbon cable goes to the board and the black end to the drive).
If the cables are secure, then check the jumper settings found on the back of the drive--many drives work best when set to the Cable Select (CS) jumper position; if you don't know which jumper position is CS and it is not labeled by the jumpers on the back of the drive, it generally will be found on a diagram on top of the drive--meaning the drive must be removed and checked or that you'll be doing some trial and error. If other applications recognize the burner and iTunes still doesn't after patchburn and connection settings, try updating or repairing disk permissions through Disk Utility.

  • Why won't itunes recognize my iphone 3 on my new mac book air?

I just got a brand new mac book air for the holiday and I migrated all my files over from my old computer, but when I connect my iphone 3 to the new computer, itunes did not recognize it in the finder.  I was able to sync and back up some files. And the computer knows that the device is connected (I checked in the System information file and it is listed as being connected. The phone also charges when it is connected, and I can sync my files). I have gone through many of the already relevant suggested fixes (used different USB port, changed cable, restarted computer, restarted phone) and still nothing has changed.  I am running mac OS X 10.8.2 on my laptop and I have version 6.0.1 on my iphone.
I haven't re-installed itunes yet, as some have suggested as the laptop is brand new.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks!

try changing USB ports. if that doesnt work and you have restarted the computerand itunes is up to date, uninstall itunes in the order of the article below.

  • Why won't iTunes recognize my iPod, ever since I got an external hard drive

I got an external drive and store my library there on the external drive. Ever since, iTunes will not recognize my iPod so I cannot update anything. Any suggestions?? Do I need to store the music on my hard drive and only use the external drive for back up?

If you want to make another drive (direct or portable) on your PC the main music location for iTunes, move all song files there, as well as any future imported music from CDs, here is one method (see the links below):
You will maintain your playlists, ratings, comments, etc. This will only move your music folders location, NOT your iTunes program files. It is my opinion that programs (i.e. – iTunes) work better when installed on your main hard drive. At the very least, it makes it easier to manage all your programs if they are centrally located on one hard drive (the Windows default standard).
See these links for some step-by-step info:
iLounge: Moving your iTunes Library to a New Hard Drive
MacMuse: iTfW: Move iTunes music/Library to new drive
iTunes: Moving your iTunes Music folder
If you are moving the music to an external hard drive or network drive, after the transfer, and to work correctly, the drive must be running prior to your opening iTunes. If not, iTunes will reset the location of your music folder location to the default.

  • Why won't iTunes recognize my internet connection so that i can restore my ipod and iphone?

iTunes will not recognize my internet connection so that I can restore my ipod and my iphone. Please help!!!!

    Close your iTunes,
    Go to command Prompt -
(Win 7/Vista) - START/ALL PROGRAMS/ACCESSORIES, right mouse click "Command Prompt", choose "Run as Administrator".
    (Win XP SP2 & above) - START/ALL PROGRAMS/ACCESSORIES/Command Prompt
In the "Command Prompt" screen, type in
    netsh winsock reset
    Hit "ENTER" key
    Restart your computer.
If you do get a prompt after restart windows to remap LSP, just click NO.
Now launch your iTunes and see if it is working now.
If you are still having these type of problems after trying the winsock reset, refer to this article to identify which software in your system is inserting LSP:

  • Why won't iTunes recognize all the pictures in a folder I am trying to sync

I am trying to add a separate folder  with 160 pictures in it to my iphone 4 but iTunes is only recognizing 83 of them the are all jpeg and roughly the same size they are not read only.

Try deleting the photo cache from your computer and then re-try the photo sync and see if they then copy over - the location of the cache, and how to delete it, is on this page http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1314

  • Why won't itunes recognize/play from my library on time capsule

I have a macbook air running mountain lion 10.8.2
    1 TB Time Capsule
    Itunes 11.0.1
    Iphoto 10.8.2
Its been my goal for a long time to get all of my music and all of my photos onto the time capsule and be able to pull them up via itunes and iphoto directly from the hard drive.
) the new itunes version updated and erased all of my playlists and most of my music/movies/apps etc.         such a nightmare
) so since everything was defunct anyway, I move my itunes file over to the time capsule. Changed the reference folder in iTunes preferences
Keep iTunes Media folder organized is checked
Copy files to itunes media folder when adding to library is checked
Then I went to File>Library>organize library
    Then restarted itunes
) Itunes doesn’t pull up all of my movies and media still
) If I click on a song from the itunes folder on the time capsule – it plays and adds to the itunes screen.  if I drag the whole folder onto the itunes screen, it seems to be busy copying etc. but in the end nothing changes.
) If I click on an .m4v file, it doesn’t open with itunes and doesn’t give that as an option. If you search for itunes app to open it, you have to search through folders to find it.   Even after you get it to open in itunes, I don’t think the movie is stay

You can use the Time Capsule for storage but not as a media Server
The Time Capsule / Airport with external drive can act as media STORAGE, but neither will run as a media SERVER. You will need at least one Mac running iTunes, with sharing turned on, and/or a media extender program like Null River's Media Link which will create a standard uPnP front-end that a PS3, Xbox or similar can poll.
A Mac Mini is often used as a media server... but might not be as cost-effective as other solutions...

  • Why won't iTunes play some songs?

I have an album that iTunes, and only iTunes, refuses to play. There are 11 songs and 9 of them are unnable to be imported to or played with iTunes.
-The files still work as they can successfully be opened with Quicktime and Windows Media Player.
-All the files are the same type as all of the other songs I have that will play, and appear to have no errors.
    -My iTunes is up-to-date.
-These songs would play before, and are even on my iPod, but recently they
-The songs will not appear in my library at all. I DOT NOT have the problem where the "!" appears. All files are accounted for, the problem is that I cannot open them in iTunes.
simply will not be played through iTunes.
Is there a way to fix this?
    BTW...I'm using Vista...

I installed iTunes and it screwed up my photoshop elements, the songs won't work in my slideshows.  I uninstalled it
but the icon stayed on all my music, so it still won't work.  Does anyone know how I can get the icon off and put the
winamp icon on? I tried to through making the winamp the default but it already is.  So somewhere my computer thinks
it still has iTunes controlling my music.  Any ideas??

  • Why won't itunes let me purchase new songs?

when i try to purchase new songs on itunes it keep sending me an error message to go to www.apple.com/support/itunes/ww/ to see what wrong.

    Do as the message says.

  • Why won't itunes let me download the songs I've purchased?

About a week or two ago I pre-ordered the new A7x album (which came out today) and it says all the songs are purchesed but it wont let me download them. What do I do?

    Hey Trevsauce,
Thanks for the question, and welcome to Apple Support Communities.
The following article outlines the procedure of pre-orders and redeeming the download:
    Downloading a pre-ordered item
When a pre-order item becomes available, you will receive an email letting you know your pre-order is available for download.
If you've enabled iTunes to automatically download prepurchased content, then your pre-order content may already be downloaded to your library. If not, simply click the download link provided within your email notification, and your pre-order content will begin to download. Alternatively you can use the "Check for Available Downloads" feature in iTunes on your computer by choosing Store > Check for Available Downloads to begin downloading your pre-order.
    iTunes Store: About Pre-orders
