Why won't Lightroom delete files I tell it to?

I have several Lightroom catalogs.  Most I rarely use because they contain photos I don't work with often.  I was using a couple of those catalogs yesterday and found that I could not delete photos from disk or remove the Lightroom entries in them.  The first time I came across was when I told it to remove the catalog entries for missing files.  It did nothing, no error message or anything.  The catalog entries are still there.  Later I edited a file in Photoshop.  The new file appeared in Lightroom as it should.  I later decided to delete that file from Lightroom.  Again, nothing happened,  no error messages.  It just did nothing.  I can go into Windows Explorer and delete the file there, but it will still show up in Lightroom and I cannot delete/remove the Lightroom entry.  I checked the Windows permissions and it appears that I have all the permissions to the catalog lrcat fill.  I am not an expert on permissions, so I might be missing something.  I can add files to the catalog and I can add Keywords, but I cannot "Delete from Disk" or "Remove" from the catalog.  I am not having these problems with the catalog I use everyday.  The problem catalogs where probably created under an older version of Lightroom, but wouldn't Lightroom automatically update the catalog when I open it in the new version of Lightroom?  I am using Lightroom 4.4 on a Windows 7 Sp1 machine with two Coreduo processors and 8GB of RAM.

I really don't use collections very much.
After running "Find All Missing Photos", you'll be in a collection.

The catalogs that are having trouble were last used in 2007 for one and 2011 for the other.
Yeah, if it's catalog-dependent you got a snafu in there somewhere.

I just tried Ctrl-Alt-Shift Delete and that works.
That solves the "Delete from Disk (and remove from catalog)" problem, but not the "Remove from Catalog (only)" problem.
Progress anyway..

    Not wrong?
Let us have a look at the error message:
"The following files were not imported because they could not be read"
This clearly gives the user the impression that there is a reading error where you want to copy the files from. Is that the actual error?
No, the actual error is that the file could not be written at the destination.
It is possible that it is not factually wrong because Lightroom first make a failed copying attempt without giving an error message, then still assumes that the files have been copied and tries to import them, and THEN makes a failed import attempt from the destination and gives the error message. But that would never be anyone's first guess when they experience that error message.
A much better error message would be: "The following files were not imported because they could not be copied to the destination folder."

  • Why won't some pdf-files open on tablet/phone?

I simply get the error saying: The document cannot be opened because it's not a valid pdf-document.
However I have no problems opening the file with my laptop, only my phone and tablet (Jellybean 4.2.2) won't open it.
My friends also have managed to open the file on their tablets (android/windows).
Have reinstalled and checked updates and tried other programs but none has worked for me.
I simply have no clue and would appreciate help.

    Hey,
Seems like the problem was in the web browser I was using, as the file just
    didn't download correctly.
Thanks for the help anyway, much appreciated.

    Hey,
spent some time discussing this with some friends of mine and found out
that the document can be opened by downloading it to the computer and
transferring then to the tablet or phone. The difference is that when
downloading with tablet/phone I get a .pdf file, which only has some html
code. So I guess the problem has something to do with the encryption of the
file. Here are the 2 different files I get as attachments. After all this
might not have anything to do with adobe, but some other stuff I don't
    really understand.

Why won't Lightroom 4.4 recognize my Nikon D600 when attempting to use Tethered Capture?  However, Lightroom recognizes the camera otherwize.

I just checked the list of cameras supported for tethered shooting, and the D7000 is on the list of supported cameras. So perhaps it's time for you to double check your camera settings to make sure it is set up for tethered shooting.

You installed an app right? The menu options are a bit different for s60v3 and s60v5 or s60v2 devices, so the thing is go to the application manager, it is inside Menu>Settings (or tools). If I remember correctly, s60v3 devices have the menu>tools>phone>applications. However I could be mistaken (you could check your manual). Anyway, once you get to the application manager, look for the particular app you want to remove and select options>uninstall.

  • Why Won't PSCS3 Edited Files Show Up In Lightroom?

What am I doing wrong here?
I am trying to go from Lightroom to Photoshop CS3. Why won't the resulting edited photos -- the .psd files -- then show up in Lightroom?
In Lightroom, I right-click on the image I want to edit and select "Edit in Adobe Photoshop CS3. I am then presented with three options(I usually select 'edit a copy') and there is a check box at the bottom to "stack with original" which I leave checked.
Then I go into Photoshop, edit the image, and save it, usually as a .PSD file. Then I close the file and return to Lightroom, but all I can ever find then are jpegs, no sign of the .psd file I just created.
I want Lightroom to stack the edited PSD on top of the jpeg and show it instead of the original jpeg. What I DON'T want to have to do is then go around and import the file into the library. That seems redundant... lousy work flow.
So, is there some way to get those PSDs that I create between LR and PS to show up in LR without going round in circles?
    Thanks,
    --PS

Is the photo in a collection? If it is and you edit in Photoshop, it will not appear stacked in the collection. However, if you switch to folder view you will see that it is stacked and it is on top of the stack.
Just after I posted this reply, I saw Lee Jay's reply and he right-on-the-mark. I had missed, well skipped over your line in your message that said:
    >Then I go into Photoshop, edit the image, and save it, usually as a .PSD file.
Do not "save as" in Photoshop, just save the file and it should appear back in Lightroom: in the collection view it will appear as a separate image, in folder view it will be stacked.
(I also looked at Adobes help and and easy-to-miss sentence is in there:
    >After making edits in Photoshop or Photoshop Elements, you will be prompted to save any changes to the photo sent from Lightroom. Be sure not to do a Save As and rename the photo because the newly-created photo will not be automatically added to the library.)
And this is the link where I found the foregoing quote:

  • Why can't I delete files in iTunes? NO DELETE does NOT work.

iTunes 11.1 will not delete files from list, and NO the delete key does not work for that thanks.

I'd recommend just giving up on the List View in iTunes. As far as I can tell, you CANNOT get rid of anything in that view. If there's a cloud icon, the episode is out there in the ether and you can download it; if there's no cloud, I guess it's on your computer already. Basically it's in permanent "Show All Available Episodes" mode, and that's the only choice available.
Use the "My Podcasts" or "My Stations" view (or a smart playlist) instead to see what podcast episodes are actually on your computer.
I've also found that deleting podcast episodes doesn't seem to be a permanent solution: iTunes will want to download them again, because after all, you didn't play the podcast, right? You must have made a mistake by deleting something you hadn't played yet! (WHY they've set it up this way is beyond me.) To get rid of a podcast episode off your computer, mark it as played, and then re-sync.

  • Why won't movie trailer files open in Quicktime

Each time I try to open a movie trailer file in my Quick time pro I see a down load window with a small X box at the top left hand of the window.
Why won't these files open. When I go to the same files in Itune Store I have no difficulty downloading and playing

I had a similar problem a few weeks ago, but nobody gave me a reply. I don't know if it helps in your case, but I eventually found out it was my firewall blocking the download.
I could view SD trailers but not the HD ones for some reason.

  • TM: Spotlight Won't Find Deleted File

As a test, I created a file just before TM began an hourly backup. After the backup was completed, I deleted the file.
When I open finder and search for the file using spotlight, of course it doesn't find it. When i call up the TM display and click the arrows, it still doesn't find it. In fact, spotlight won't find the file in TM at all. But because I know the exact time and date of the backup that has that file, I can navigate to the exact directory and find it. The file is there, and it only exists in that one backup.
So TM is working, but this isn't exactly the most convenient if you've deleted a file a month ago, have no idea when it was backed up, and can't remember where it was located.
I've tried it with the TM drive both in and out of the spotlight privacy pane--doesn't seem to make any difference. Known issue?

Hmmm, it sounds like Spotlight's DB is corrupt or not functioning properly.

  • Why won't Lightroom 2.3 suddenly not import RAW files?

Why can't I import RAW files into Lightroom 2.3? I've imported them for years, until today, after I installed a Canon  Pixma MX860 multi-purpose printer. Would this affect Lightroom? Now I get a Lightroom message: "The files could not be written." Tried to import from Canon 5D on a CF card and from a Panasonic Lumix on an SD card many times. Same result. I can pull the RAW files individually off the cards into Photoshop CS3 RAW window and adjust them, but can't on Lightroom. It won't automatically import the files and won't take them manually. Am using a PC with XP Professional. Any thoughts?

Are you sure it's the same problem as that user had?
What error message are you getting when you try to import a raw file?
    What camera?
    What version of LR?
    What computer and operating system?
Did your ability to import raw files just suddenly stop, or have you never been able to import them?

  • Why won't lightroom open my raw (NEF) files? I shoot with a Nikon D5500.

I just did a photoshoot and lightroom is telling me that my files are not supported by lightroom. it says lightroom is up to date. I have a cc subscription and can't use lightroom. please tell me there is an easy fix

Support for the Nikon D5500 was released with Adobe Camera Raw 8.8 on March 19th 2015. There has not been a corresponding release of LR 5.8. The expectation is that LR 6 will be release in the near future but there has been no specific release from Adobe.
In the meantime LR users have been advised that they can make use of the Adobe DNG Converter 8.8 which they can use to convert the NEF files to the DNG format and import these files for use in LR 5.7.1 or other earlier versions.
See  the link below for the official communication.
Lightroom Journal | Tips and advice straight from the Lightroom team.
Quote from the communication. "Camera Raw 8.8 is now available as a final release for Photoshop CS6 and Photoshop CC.  DNG Converter 8.8 is provided for all Lightroom customers and Photoshop customers using versions of Photoshop older than Photoshop CS6."
It is clear that there will be no further versions of ACR version 8. and unlikely to be a version 5.8 for Lightroom. We have to await Photoshop CC 2015 and LR 6.

  • FAQ: Will Lightroom work with my camera, or Why won't my raw files open?

    What is a raw file?
A raw file is the unprocessed data that was captured by your camera sensor when you took your picture. The only settings on your camera that apply to this file are aperture, shutter speed, and ISO. This means that any effects you may have applied to the file, such as white balance or black and white, may not appear in Lightroom. Your camera will create a JPEG copy of your raw file with all current settings applied and save that within the raw file for use as a thumbnail by most applications. When you first view a raw file in Lightroom, you will see this thumbnail, then Lightroom will read the raw data and create its own thumbnail, which may have a different appearance.
How does Lightroom work with raw camera files?
Lightroom interprets the raw data and makes image information out of it. But every camera has a unique sensor and thus has a unique form of raw file. Even though camera manufactures may use the same file extension each time (e.g. Nikon raw files are always .NEF), each camera model has a different way of storing information. Because of this, we must continually update Lightroom for new cameras. As we add new cameras to the list (over 300 now) we update our published list of supported cameras.
Will the raw files from my camera work with Lightroom?
To determine whether your camera is supported by Lightroom, check this list:
    Supported cameras
Go to Help > Updates to install the latest release. You can also manually download and install Lightroom updates:
    Macintosh
    Windows
What if I own a previous version of Lightroom?
Supposing you have a camera that came out after the release of a newer version of Lightroom, so that your version of Elements is no longer recieving updates, you have two basic options:
Purchase the latest version of Lightroom that supports your camera.
Use the latest version of the free DNG Converter (for Macintosh or Windows)
You can convert your files to the universaly compatible DNG format (the files will work with any version of the Lightroom). See In depth : Digital Negative (DNG) for more information.

Can I perform tethered capture from my camera to Lightroom?
Lightroom has the ability to automatically import images from your camera, as you shoot, life. To learn more about setting up and useing tethered capture, please see Import photos from a tethered camera. This list shows all the cameras that Lightroom supports for tethered shoooting:

Will Lightroom help me automatically compensate for the image distortion caused by my camera lens?
The Develop module of Lightroom includes Lens Correction which can read what lens was used from the metadata. With this information it can pick a profile that will reduce distortion caused by the curvature of the lens. For a list of which lenses are supported by which camera bodies, see this list:
    Lens profile support | Lightroom 4, 3
If your lens is not currently supported, you have a few options:
    Apply the lens correction manually
Use the Adobe Lens Profile Downloader (Download: Mac, Win) to see if someone else has created a profile your camera and lens
Use the Adobe Lens Profile Creator (Download: Mac, Win) to make your own profile for your camera and lens.

  • Why won't Lightroom 3.3 send a dng file to Photoshop CS5?

I am using a Windows 7 64 bit platform, Lightroom 3.3, Camera Raw 6.3 and Photoshop CS5 also 64 bit.  I have my photos (from a Nikon D3100) in dng format but when I try to open it in Photoship using the Edit in command to send it either as a dng file or a smart object I get a notice that the file couldn't open because Photoshop couldn't be opened.  In fact Photoshop does open (or it is already open).  Sometimes, the file will eventually open in Photoshop, but it takes several minutes -- like 5 or more, other times it never opens.
Can anyone offer any suggestions or help?

Quote <Is there a setting LR or on the camera that I can use to allow LR to recognise (and render) the NEF file from the camera?>
No. LR will only show the thumbnail rendered by the camera,if it is possible. The better practice would be to download the files from the CF/SD card using a reliable card reader, this would be more efficient/faster and reliable. (use the camera to take photographs, rather than have it attached to the computer.)
A LR generated preview will only be rendered after the import of the NEF.
