Why won't my 2007 iMac won't stay on?

It turns on, chimes, briefly flashes to the grey screen then shuts down. I took it to the Apple Store today and it worked fine there. She reset the PRAM and did diagnostics - no problems found. SHe suggested that maybe the time unplugged bringing it down also helped. I brought it home and plugged it in, started it up - worked fine. Left for the evening, got home, couldn't get it started again. Unplugged it for 10 seconds, and it did the chime, grey screen, shut down procedure again. Seems like the longer I leave it unplugged the longer it stays on.
Help

Nope - same problem. Did get about 10 seconds in before it shut down. And, I think it might just be going to sleep but I'm not positive. When it got to the main screen the App Store was open like it was earlier today. However, going to sleep before you can even get to the system prefs to change it seems very unhelpful.

Why is my mid 2007 iMac so slow now that I've loaded 10.9.4? Everything seems to be slow. It was quick enough on 10.4. I now have wireless connection issues, and wired keyboard connection issues?

• 2007 imac won't start

Hi, I have a 2007 iMac, yesterday it froze while backing up so I ended up unplugging and left it overnight. Now it won't turn on at all. I've tried unplugging from the power and the computer, holding the power button for 5, reconnecting but still nothing

Time to take the computer to your local Apple Store or an AASP.

• 2007 iMac won't boot

Using snow leopard. Tried to repair disk in Disk Utility but said it can't be fixed & to backup files, reformat disk & restore backup. I'm not real technical so... anyone have suggestions?

Hi, 2007 iMac here, but I'd suggest getting a USB or FW drive ASAP. install 10.6 to the external drive, see if you can then recover info from the internal drive...

• 2007 iMac won't boot from startup disc

My brother passed away and I inherited his Mid 2007 iMac. Works fine, but all accounts are still in his name and I do not have his passwords. Trying to wipe the hard drive and do a clean start, but unable to boot from startup disc. It was purchased with Snow Leopard, but has been updated to Lion 10.8.3. It appears that there may be a security feature that rejects any attempt to boot from startup disc. Is there another way to wipe hard drive and start clean?

Sorry for your loss ...
The original startup disc will not work on a Mac running v10.8.3.
The fact that you do not have the admin password is a problem because you will need it to repair the startup or restore OS X using OS X Recovery

• Mavericks on Mid 2007 iMac won't recognize hard driveon start up. "?" on folder

iMac - Mid 2007- recently, in last 3 weeks, due to spinning beach balls locking up the machine, upgraded RAM to 4GB, from Lion to Mountain lion and finally, yesterday to Mavericks. Worked great for about 24 hours and this evening while using Mail, spinning beach ball. Force shut down and all that shows on restart is "?" on a folder icon. Tried starting up on Mountain lion disk which worked but when I set start up disk to MountainLion disk, now the main hardrive doesn't show up. Tried all kinds of start-up keys but nothing works. All peripherals unplugged including time-machine drive and ethernet. Getting frustrated.

That can happen. When you reformat a disk, bad sectors will be mapped out. The disk can "relocate" certain things to good sectors, and map these things out. There's an area of the disk for this. However when the "remapping" area gets full, the disk dies. This is a "soft" failure (as opposed to an actual "crash" where the hardware fails and you can hear things), but it's nearly as deadly as far as how things end up.
With a 7-year old machine it may be time to look for a new machine. Thing about a Mac mini is that you need a monitor too

• My iMac won't start, my iMac won't start

When I power on my iMac, I hear the classical sound when the Apple icon appears. The screen does light up, but the power-up process will not go beyond the spinning icon below the apple. I've attempeted to start in safe mode, but haven't been able to. I woukd'nt know what to do once there.
The prblem arose after i ran an antivirus progrma to scan my computer. It did not detect ani infections, but I recall erasin a file )stupid me= marked in red in the program's report or log.
My computer worked fine for the rest of the day. It all happened after I had to reboot the system...
Any hints?

Thank you drdocument. But the antivirus program I got was from the App Store. Anyway, it wasn't the programs fault, it was my fault. I unwittingly deleted a file in the startup secuence, and got what I deserved. It really was time to re-format my hard disk. Everything is fine now and I'm up and running, with practically the same setup as before this unfortunate "slip of the finger"

• Please help. Optical drive won't take disc, imac won't boot up!

I installed Tiger 10.4.6 and it was working just fine, had done several restarts.
Then I put in an office for mac cd and it wouldn't boot up. I tried ejecting it wouldn't work. I finally got the disc out, but the computer wouldn't start.
I booted up in safe mode, i booted up in single user mode and did the fgsk thing. I got the I/0 error.
How can I fix this? I don't care if I lose everything on the computer, I just want it to work again.

Oh, that presents a problem. Try resetting the SMU.
Otherwise, I'm afraid you will need to take it in for repair.

• IMac won't stay asleep

I recently installed Lion OS. When i try to put my iMac to sleep, it does so momentarily and then wakes up.

Had the exact same problem. The trusty old mid-2007 iMac refused to stay asleep, whether I pressed the power button (with "Allow power button to put the computer to sleep" checked) or chose "Sleep" from the Apple menu or let it sit for the "Computer sleep" interval. It would immediately wake up again in all cases.
The problem was somehow related to the powered USB hub itself. Removing USB devices from the hub one at a time made no difference. Unplugging the hub from the iMac solved the problem (but also made it impossible to use, as the wired Apple keyboard is plugged into that hub.)
The solution was powering down all accessories (including the USB hub) and the iMac, then turning on power to all accessories, letting them start up, then turning on the iMac. There may have been some interaction between the USB hub, the iMac's PMU, and/or the iMac's USB controller(s) that prevented the iMac from sleeping.
(Note: it might be very useful to follow the advice in this thread: https://discussions.apple.com/message/17050677#17050677, which will show the specific reason for the machine waking up. It may not be necessary to shut down all external devices to solve the problem.)

• I have a mid 2007 iMac and the internal superdrive audio cd won't play, the DVD works. Can I purchase an external cd drive that will work with my iMac?

I have a mid 2007 iMac (Model A1224 iMac 7,1) and the internal superdrive audio cd won't play, the DVD works. Can I purchase an external cd drive that will work with my iMac?

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
Any external optical drive will work with your Mac. If you want an Apple USB SuperDrive, see > http://www.tuaw.com/2012/04/02/use-the-macbook-air-superdrive-with-any-almost-ma c/
The best option is to take the Mac to an Apple Store and get the Mac's SuperDrive repaired

• Why my new iMac won't read my external hard drive?

Why my new imac won't read my external hard drive??

Liz,
Sorry for not responding sooner, I support your position completely - as for the external drive I assumed that the individual was a previous mac user and knew about that (my mistake) at home I have a couple of external drives
one drive is acknowledged regardless of format (mac/win) its a partitioned drive.... the other one - far as the mac is concerned does exist when i connect it. I believe its a win only drive (will have to check the specs on it) but it works on the win-notebooks.
so my point of reference was coming that perspective, with no additional posts I have to assume you had the correct answer. have a great day.

• Why won't my Intel iMac boot up, either from the internal hard drive or the DVD drive? It just displays a light grey screen, without any other icons, etc. The fact that it won't boot from the original system DVD is what baffles me the most. Any ideas?

It just displays a light grey screen, without any other icons, etc. The fact that it won't boot from the original system DVD is what baffles me the most. Any ideas? It uses the latest version of Mavericks. Thanks!

If the C key for Install Disc or R Command for OS X Recovery startup commands are not working, try holding the Option key for the Startup Manager.
see > Startup Manager: How to select a startup volume
If that does not work and you using a wireless keyboard, it may have become unpaired and you need to dig up a USB keyboard to invoke the startup commands.
For more on gray screen, see > Mac OS X: Gray screen appears during startup

• IMac won't boot from Firewire?

Hey gang-
I wanted to post this to save anyone else pulling out their hair if they have a Mac that won't boot from a Western Digital (WD) external Firewire drive. I recently purchased a Western Digital My Book Studio 2 TB FireWire 800 External Hard Drive.
I bought this drive intending to partition it into two 1TB partitions- one for a bootable backup and one for a Time Machine backup. I do my bootable backups with the application SuperDuper, which is outstanding for this purpose. I have used it to create bootable backups on 3 different Maxtor external Firewire drives, and they have all flawlessly booted all my Macs. I expected no different from this new Western Digital (WD) 2TB drive.
Unfortunately, the WD would not boot 2 out of my 3 Macs when connected via Firewire. It would NOT boot an Intel MacBook (Late 2007 edition) or an Intel iMac (Mid 2007 edition). It does boot our Intel iMac (Mid-2010 edition). Strangely, the WD booted all 3 Macs when connected via USB, though needless to say very slowly in all cases. If you need additional technical information, read on.
Technical Info: The following tests were done with the WD connected via Firewire. The WD is correctly formatted for booting Intel Macs with GPT GUID formatting. Note that the WD appears as a bootable drive in System Preferences->Startup Disk on all 3 of my Macs. But when attempting to boot via Firewire, I get only a grey screen on the Intel MacBook (Late 2007 edition) and the Intel iMac (Mid 2007 edition). The Intel iMac (Mid-2010 edition) boots normally. When booting with the Option Key held down, Startup Manager does NOT see the WD as a bootable drive on the Intel MacBook (Late 2007 edition) and the Intel iMac (Mid 2007 edition). It does appear as a bootable drive on the Intel iMac (Mid-2010 edition).
When connected via USB, the WD boots all three of my Macs, but very slowly compared to the internal drive.
It's probably worth noting that the Late-2007 MacBook and the Mid-2007 iMac all share the then-new Santa Rosa architecture. So I'm guessing that they may share the same Firewire chipset. And for whatever reason, that chipset does not play nice with the WD chipset.
So, bottom line is that if you need a Firewire bootable backup, be sure to test the drive right away so that you don't think you have a bootable backup when in fact you don't.
On the good side, the drive is amazingly quiet. At this point, I need to decide whether to keep the drive, knowing that I have only USB as a bootable option on 2 out my 3 Macs, or return it. But in any case, wanted to pass this on to anyone else having problems booting from an external Firewire drive.

baltwo wrote:
FWIW, many WD HDs won't boot Macs and booting Macs isn't supported. Details at their site. That's the main reason I never recommend their crappy HDs.
Actually I'm very familiar with that list- spent a lot of time looking at this past week!
Ironically, the majority of that page is a list of drives which they claim WILL boot Macs. In fact, the list is entitled "List of Mac-bootable WD external drives..."
And yep, mine is on there...on the list that reads "The following external hard drives should be bootable on Intel-based Mac computers systems through FireWire (1394a/b)" is "MyBook Studio" as well as my drive model number.
But that's all beside the point. Like you, I couldn't recommend their drives at this point. At least make sure if you buy one that the vendor has a good return policy.
Dave

• My iMac won't let me update to OS X v10.6 Snow Leopard.

My iMac won't let me update to OS X v10.6 Snow Leopard. It's year of manufacture is 2007 and when I try to install Snow Leopard it now says that it cannot be upgraded on the iMac. Normally it wouldn't bother me but Chrome and Firefox no longer support 10.5! Do I need a new Mac?

Are you using gray system disks from another mac? Normally that message means you're trying, for example, to use disks delivered with a MacBook to install on an iMac. The system disks are locked to the systems they are delivered with and can't be used on other mac hardware.
If that's the case here, call the online Apple store, which in the US is at 800-MY-APPLE, and order a retail copy of Snow Leopard 10.6.

• IMac won't allow me to login after few hours

Hi everyone...
My iMac won't allow me to login after few hours. Actually I had a limited broadband connection which is free from 2AM to 8AM. So I have scheduled some downloads to start at 2AM and end at 8AM. Before going to bed, I just put on the screen saver. When I wake early in the morning and move my mouse.. blank screen turns on and colorful spinning wheel appears, but log-in window doesn't appear. This has happened thrice till now. Day before yesterday it was fine. But yesterday and today I got the same problem. Previously also it was working fine. I can't figure out why it is behaving like this...
Initially, in Power save options, I scheduled iMac to wake up at 2AM and sleep at 8AM and then used to put iMac to sleep before going to bed. It was working fine and did the same thing for more than a month. Now I have removed wakeup & sleep scheduled options from Power save options.
Following are the settings/options selected:
1. In energy save options, I have selected the option not to put iMac to sleep when it is inactive for certain time.
2. Put hard-disks to sleep whenever possible is checked.
3. I have scheduled the downloads in Azureus, Transmission and Speed download 5.

One more thing, recently I have reset the SMU because it is taking too long to boot up. To my surprise, after restarting, fan (not sure which one) started to make bigger sounds. I then had to reset SMU two times and only then fan started to spin normally without any noise. I'm scared & worried...
Someone please help me where I went wrong.... what can I do to solve this problem..
You know I purchased this iMac for Rs.86000/- INR ($2097 approx.) ... after two months they slashed the prices by Rs.20000/- INR($487 approx.)... so this is how my luck seems to be

Hello and sorry. First, if you reset the SMU. make sure you do not hold the power button down while reconnecting the cable or it will reset the SMC incorrectly.
When you say you are logging in, are you logging onto the internet, or onto the computer/user account?
If it is intermittent than it sounds like your internet and that would be best handled by your internet provider first.

If it is your internet you are referring to than try going to the Apple in the top left corner and clicking on it.
Than click on the System Preferences
Then click on Network
Then click on Assist Me.
Then Assistant
Maybe call it Test Location
go through the steps involved and see the outcome.
