Why won't my application start?

Hi folks... fairly new mac user here. Just downloaded and installed Handbrake from versiontracker.com, and although the icon appears now in applications and also on my dock, when I click it, it bounces three times and nothing happens. Same with some (not all) other apps i have downloaded. Sound like a system problem, or my own dim-wittedness when it comes to macs?
Sometimes when I click, a second Handbrake icon shows up for a second in the lower right corner of my dock, then "hides." Still no application launch.
Any ideas? i would appreciate it.

hey guys... I just joined the forum and am not really understanding how to create my own thread, so I had to reply to someone elses... I am having a problem with my mac and i literally want to throw it out the window! When I use Safari or even firefox to access certain webpages (e.g. facebook, school websites, etc) its giving me a message that says "safari quit unexpectedly. Mac OS X and other applications are not affected.
Click Reopen to open the application again. Click Report to see more details or send a report to Apple..."
I have NOOOO idea what to do, its really starting to get irritating because I can't access certain webpages.. I am using Mac OS X Version 10.4.6

Got it working, had to go to the start menu and do a search for "Apple Software Update" and update Quicktime - had an old version that wasn't getting updated. Itunes works without problem now.

Why won't my iMac start up after I put my password in. It just stops on the screen with the apple logo

I turned on my iMac today running Lion and typed in my password and it went to the gray screen with the apple logo and a little wheel spinning below it and won't go any further. Ive tried the Pram reset with cmd alt r p. no help. Ive tried a safe boot. No help. I've unpluged everything to it and unpluged the iMac itself. No help. One other thing I wanna try but I don't think I can is starting with the install cd. But oh wait, lion was a download only. So I don't have a disk. I have a snow leopard install disk. I put that in just so I can get to my disk utility. When I got there I saw that my HD drive was not mounted and it wont let me repair it. I'm thinking this has to do with using the snow leopard cd. Maybe it will show mounted if I tried a lion cd that I don't have. Any ideas????

Please read Apple's Gray screen appears during startup, you have performed some of the troubleshooting steps however I'd recommend starting over from the beginning of the advice letter and following the instructions to the letter.

Why won't my computer start up? Whats this mean?

I have a power mac G5 (Power PC) I havent used the computer in years and I started it up one day and no problems.
A few days after running the computer it wouldnt boot up its OS. Below is a link of the grey screen. After the wheel spins for about 45 seconds and then the wheel turns to a low resolution pink box. After this spins for a few seconds the computer stays on and the display turns black.
Im able to boot up in safe mode.

Lkely a Graphic card problem, have you blown the dust ouy lately?

One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport, or some USB or Firewire device, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts (Users & Groups in later OSX versions)>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.
Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...
/private/var/run/StartupItems
/Library/StartupItems
/System/Library/StartupItems
/System/Library/LaunchDaemons
/Library/LaunchDaemons

Why won't my applications sync onto my iPhone?

The applications I buy from the apps store on my computer won't sync onto my iPhone when I connect it. It won't let me check the sync box or anything on the apps page of my iTunes. Anyone know how to fix it?

I'm having the same issue. In the iTunes interface, the 'Automatically sync when this iPhone is connected.' is also greyed out. I just got back from the Apple store where they backed up and restored the phone from backup and then I did a sync. I'm on the 2.2 firmware and still don't have an app store on my phone.
Can anyone help?

Why won't my programs start properly when I install 6u12 - 6u14?

Hello all
I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this, but I'm having some frustrating issues w/ programs after I install update 14 (I tried 12 and 13 too).
This is a confusing story, but basically I have this issue where programs seem to start properly (this includes Netbeans and an application that I've developed and try to run w/in Netbeans) but the interface components never totally paint themselves. I see the program as running in the bottom program bar, but I cannot do anything w/ the program. I've been messing w/ settings, but I cannot completely trace/solve the problem. What I DO know is that if I fall back to version 1.6.0_04, all my programs work fine.
Any thoughts? I'm hesitant to deploy a new version of our application w/ the latest Java version at this point.

The only consistent problem posts I have seen involve 14. And there aren't really a lot of those.
You might have some unusual situation. Or the cause might be something completely bizarre.

Why won't my iPad start up?

Hello. I started my iPad up this morning and the Apple logo comes up and sits there for about two minutes and then a spinning circle that does not spin. Then it just sits there and won't boot up. Does anyone know what could be wrong? It is only a month old.

You could try putting the iPad into recovery mode and restoring it via your computer's iTunes : http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1808 (it looks like Apple are doing some maintenance at the moment so that link might not currently work)

Why won't my MacBook start up/install Mac OS X?

Today, I bought a MacBook and when I started it up, it showed me a file folder with the question mark. According to the guide that came with it, I have to re-install OS X. I put in the disk, and the utility worked. However, it will not give me a drive location to install OS X. Also, it won't let me eject the disk. So... what do I do?????

Why won't my applications purchased from the itunes store launch on my macbook pro? My software is up to date.

I purchased a few games from the app store recently. I have updated all of the software on my Macbook Pro but the applications will not launch. If the problem was contained within just one application, I could have fixed it, but neither of the applications will launch. I click on them, they turn blue, but that's it. I do not have an iPhone or iTouch with which to test the applications. Could somebody tell me what is wrong with my computer/the applications and how to fix them?!

Apps on the iTunes store are made for the iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch and not the Mac.
By any chance, do you mean the Mac App Store?

Why won't an application launch after migrating to new computer?

I have a new non Intel 2.3 Ghz G5 OSX 4.7 1.5 GB RAM that I used the migration assistant to move files from another non Intel G5 OSX 4.7. We use Quark 6.5, Photoshop and Illustrator as our main working applications. I had to reinstall Photoshop and Illustrator 10.0.3. I've been able to boot up all the other applications on the computer except the Illustrator app. I've reinstalled several times. But each time when it looks like it's going to open, it crashes and gives me the "send report" window. I've tried asking questions on the Illustrator forums site but no one there seems to know what to do. I've thrown away the .plist, installed Illust. 9 to update from, used another disk to install from and also created another account to see if it is a system problem (and it did the same thing there, too). I have another G5 set up with the same software and it works fine. So I know this software will work on this computer. Can anyone give me any direction from here? Kappy or Dr. Smoke, if you're listening, can you help me out?

It might be simpler to boot the new machine into Target Disk Mode, hook it up to a machine that works, and clone from the working machine to the new one. Use Carbon Copy Cloner, SuperDuper!, Disk Utility (restore function), etc.

Why won't my applications open from the dock?

I have my frequently used applications on my dock. Recently, when I click on an application to open, or try to open an application, it bounces once on the dock and then does not open. At times, it even "hides" in the dock. This does not occur for itunes, safari, dashboard, photobooth, or the finder; only things like word, excel, my digital camera download application, etc.
