Why won't my computer open my catalog?
I am using Lightroom 3 and in the process of the program starting, my computer crashed. When I restarted the computer and attempted to open Lightroom, I get a message reading "The Lightroom catalog named "Lightroom 3 catalog" cannot be opened because another application already has it opened. Quit the other copy of Lightroom before trying to launch."
It gives me the option of opening another catalog but the last time I backed up was a month ago. Is there any way to unlock my main catalog so I can get to it? I guess this will teach me not to backup frequently!

That is the message you get when there is a .lock file present. You must not be trying to open the catalogue you think you are.
If you know the location of the catalogue you want to open, make sure there is no .lock file present in its folder, and then double-click on the catalogue icon. That will bring up Lightroom using that catalogue.
If you don't know the location, search your entire system for files ending in .lrcat.

p.s. I've heard that you may also need to delete a .journal file from the catalogue's folder.

Go to About This Mac in the Apple menu.
Click on the Version number in the window that opens. It will change to Build number. What's the build number?
Also, what error message do you see, or any other helping description of what happens when you try to update. -

I understand that you want iTunes to be opening every time you connect your phone to your computer. You may wish to adjust this setting in your iTunes preferences to affect this behavior:
Prevent iPods, iPhones, and iPads from syncing automatically
Prevent devices from automatically syncing with this iTunes library when a device is connected. To sync a device, click the Sync button when the device is connected.

Right click the document and select 'get info'. Check the permissions for the file. If several of these files have the wrong permissions then you may need to repair user permissions. See this for instructions:

Turn Off your computer. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your computer. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.

I was writing to -R dvds fine from blank dvds purchased last year. Inserted newer purchase -R dvds and MacPro spits blank dvd back out. Why won't my computer now accept -R blank dvds?
Likely either the batch of media is defective, or the drive itself is not working.
Swap for different media; for a different batch from a different vendor, and also try +R media.
The slot-loading drives on various Mac systems can and variously do fail. If different media doesn't work, then you probably have a failed drive.
If your Mac is of same the vintage as OS X v10.4 that's listed in your footer and you're not in a position to replace or repair the optical drive in your Mac, then you might consider using an external USB CD/DVD device. If you don't have another Mac around to perform the recording on, that is. -
