Why won't my computer won't recognise my ipod?

I just bought my ipod nano today. At first everything was ok and it was charging while I set up itunes. Then i had to take a phone call and my laptop went on standby.. now my computer wont recognise my ipod at all, and the ipod isn't charging. But the ipod lights up when i plug it into the computer so obviously it recognises the computer. I even tried going into control panel and changing the usb settings but it didn't work! Is the problem with my ipod, the usb connection or my computer?? HELP!!!

Have you tried resetting the iPod while it's connected? This will often get it to show up. If not, are you on Windows or Mac? Have you seen this;

Also my ipod keeps turning itself on automatically even when it is on hold and therefore it is draining the battery. What can be done to stop it?

About turning on, is the alarm set?

  • Battery won't charge, computer won't turn on

My battery won't charge, even though the power adapter light is on as if charging. I've tried using other power dapaters of the same model, with the same results; no charge. Now the battery is dead and the computer won't turn on. Should I just get a new battery?

I tried resetting the PMU, before the battery totally ran out. Now I'm sure the battery is totally dead, but not sure if it will charge once I get a new battery. Looking at other postings, it sounds like the problem could be with the logic board.

  • Why won't my computer recognize my brand new iPod Nano I purchased today?

I purchased a Nano 3 weeks ago and it quit holding a charge. I couldn't use the wall charger (Apple product) and then when I tried charging on my computer, nothing happened. I returned it and went to set up the new Nano today on the computer and the USB isn't recognized. It briefly recognized it and I saw that software was being installed.  It then stated that the USB device was unknown.  I then came here got some ideas and tried uninstalling the driver, but there was not type of un-named driver and nothing identified as Apple.  I tried my iPhone and that did sync up.  I updated my iPad a few days ago.  What is wrong with these darn Nano?  It looks like I will have to get a Samsung if this doesn't work.  I am not a high tech computer person and I don't have all the time in the world to figure this out.  Help.

  • T61 power adaptors do nothing - won't run computer & won't charge battery

My T61 suddenly won't run on the power adaptor, or charge the battery.   I have several OEM power adaptors and none of them do anything plugged into this T61.  The computer runs fine on a battery charged in another T61.

Assuming the power adapters are good, you'll need to replace the motherboard.

  • IPod Freezes on Startup; Won't Charge; Computer Won't Recognize

I just got a used iPod in the mail yesterday... When I try to charge it using a USB drive or a wall charger, it appears as if nothing happens. When I have it plugged into my USB drive, my computer doesn't recognize anything...
I've tried using the "reset" feature, and every now and then it gets the Apple logo to come up, but then seems to freeze at that point. A few times it's come up with the "Use iTunes to restore" message after the Apple logo, but then seems to freeze there as well. I'll plug it into my USB drive, but again nothing is recognized by my computer...
I don't even know where to begin. Does anyone have any ideas?

    I should add that it's a 5th Generation 30GB Video iPod

  • Satellite A300 - Vista won't load, computer won't start

    Satellite A300
    Model Number: PSAGCA-02W010
Vista will not load; have tried start up repair; system restore and starting in safe mode, none of these will work. I get the error "Error 0x80070570: The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable."
I don't know what I have done with my recovery CD; or if I even got any with my purchase (from Harvey Norman).
Please advise what can be done.

    Hey,
    > I don't know what I have done with my recovery CD; or if I even got any with my purchase (from Harvey Norman).
Normally you dont get any recovery disk with the notebook because you have to create it yourself using Toshiba recovery disk but this is mentioned in user manual. Probably you have already done this and you can find the recovery disks again. ;)
If not you have to follow the instructions posted by Andrej: You have to start HDD recovery feature to get rid of this. Enter the advanced boot menu of Windows where you can choose to start in Windows in safe mode, etc. and select Repair my computer. Vista will load some files and on new window you can choose the Toshiba HDD recovery feature.

  • My computer has stopped recognising my iPod shuffle

I plug it in directly to the USB2 port and it is not recognized. No matter how many days I leave it it does not take a charge. The common pathway to this is the USB connection. All other devices are working perfectly with my USB ports. It is all the more baffling as my iPod shuffle 1GB worked perfectly for about five months. I have spent many hours working through some of the published solutions and I can not seem to find a solution for this. I have updated my iPod software and it still will not recognize my iPod shuffle. It is most disappointing. Please help Apple.

Alright, so here's my story. I bought my 512MB Shuffle in April. It has worked perfectly fine since I got it. Last night, I updated to v1.1.2 of the iPod software, clicked no when it asked if I wanted to restart, added some songs to the iPod, then restarted. As of this morning, I went to listen to some music while out for a bike ride, and I was greeted with the red battery light. I thought it was a bit odd since I had left it plugged in overnight. I figured, what the heck, I'll just plug it in and let it charge when I get back. When I got back, I plugged it into my PC and left for a while. I came back later and went to grab my Shuffle and I noticed it was cold, which was unusual after charging for a couple hours. I plugged it back in, a bit frustrated, and it never came up in Windows. I looked at the iPod plugged into the back of my PC (a high powered USB port) and sure enough, no orange light. No lights at all. I can still slide the switch to one of the play modes (standard play or shuffle) and play music for a couple seconds before it stops and says the battery's dead again. It works.. I mean it turns on and plays music, it's just not charging or mounting when I plug it in. I tried multiple computers and USB ports, none of which worked. I would really like some help with this considering it IS my only source of portable music and I'm not going to go pay $50 to talk to tech support or have it sent in for repairs. That's half of what it's worth.
I've tried uninstalling all iTunes/iPod related software from the PC I normally use it on and reinstalling it. That didn't work. I also tried uninstalling again and installing the last known working version of the iPod software, still no results. The only thing I havn't tried is giving it a good beating... Not that I would. Anyways, I hope there's a solution to this that doesn't involve buying a new one.
Here's a rundown of the computers I tested it with.
    500MHZ G4 Cube (384MB RAM/Mac OSX Tiger)
    400MHZ G3 iMac (384MB RAM/Mac OSX Tiger)
4.2GHZ AMD 64-Bit running Windows XP Service Pack 2 (my PC)
    515MHZ Dell running Windows 2000 (256MB RAM)
UPDATE: The BIOS won't recognize the iPod, so it has nothing to do with my computer. Somehow, installing v1.1.2 of the iPod software made it so the iPod itself has USB problems. The iPod works to the extent of playing music and showing the battery charge level. I get no response at all when I plug it in, from the computer or the iPod.
I'm going to have to agree with Philip Harhay on this one. The original 10GB iPod I bought 3 years ago came with a full one-year warranty, no extra charges. I am disappointed to see the Shuffle only coming with a three-month warranty.

  • HELP!!! My Computer does not recognise my Ipod

I have a 30G 5th Generation Ipod, and it has worked great on my computer since i bought it. Today, when i plugged it into my computer, it began to charge, but the screen did not change to the "Do Not Disconnect" and the Icon did not show up in my computer or Itunes I put it into disk mode, and it still could not be read by anything..... HELP ME!!!

I actually have the same problem as the first post. I've used my iPod 5th Gen 30gb without any problems for probably close to a year. Now my iPod charges when I connect it with the USB cable but it never goes into "Do Not Disconnect" and it is not recognised in Windows or in iTunes. Because its not in iTunes there is no way to select it and restore the device. I have tried this on two different computers and used two different Apple USB to iPod cables, same result in both cases. I've gone through the 5 R's and they didn't help at all.
Anyone have any other ideas before I bite the bullet and pay Apple to try to fix it (well past warrenty).
No offense to the 2nd and 3rd posters but it sounds like you have a different issue because you were able to perform a restore of your device which would require it to be seen in iTunes.

  • TS1368 Computer won't recognise ipod touch

My computer wouldn't recognise my ipod touch in either itunes or my computer, so i then erased it and reset the factory settings and now it just has the "connect to itunes" logo appear on the screen and it is still unrecognisable by my computer.  How can this problem be fixed?

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode
How to put iPod touch / iPhone into DFU mode « Karthik's scribblings
    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • I was updating my ipod and had to stop it so held down the power and home buttons. Now my ipod is frozen with the apple logo showing. The computer will not recognise it so it will not charge or restore. Is there anything that I can do myself?

I was updateing the software on my ipod through the wireless straight to the ipod and had to stop so held down both the power and the home buttons. Now the screen is frozen with the apple logo and the normal 'unfreeze' technique won't work. The computer does not recognise the ipod so will not charge or restore it. Is there anything that I can do myself?

Unplug it and let unit go dead. Then hold your Home button down and plug the USB power cord back in. iTunes should see it and then restore.
