I own a 2008 Macbook pro, the battery won't even show how much it has and I even tried turning it on with just the adapter by its self and nothing.

My early 2008 MacBook won't wake up from sleep periodically. I will have to hold the power button down and then restart when it acks up. It did this twice yesterday & once today.

Try resetting the PMU (power management unit).
Remove battery and power adapter.
Hold down power button for 10 seconds.
Reinstall battery and attach power adapter.
Hold down Command-Option-P-R, a total of four keys, and press power button. Don't release the keys.
Continue holding the four keys until you hear the startup sound twice, then release.

Early 2008 MacBook Pro won't start up

My early 2008 macbook won't start up. It worked fine two days ago but won't start up now. The battery has full charge and my MagSafe charger is amber. The fan runs but no screen (it's dark), no apple logo, no chime. It sounds like it wants to start but doesn't. I did a SMC and a PRAM, but to no avail. I know I need to do a disk utility and a disk permissions. I don't know what else to do. Can someone help me?

Early 2008 MacBook Pro won't boot after Lion 10.7.1 update

My 2.4 GHz 4GB RAM Early 2008 MacBook Pro wont boot after downloaded the Lion 10.7.1 upate. Upon restarting the screen went dead and now the system does not boot, as if the bootloader has been wiped out. Screen appears dead but was known to be working before hand. The hard drive spins up but doesn't sound like it is searching for data.
Can anyone help me?

Okay, I tried everything I can think of last night. I removed every startup process and every tool or programm that goes deeper into the system (GlimmerBlocker, LittleSnitch, Parallels). Cleaned Up every Cache I could find and refreshed every necessary Cache or Database possible. Took me a couple of hours. But still no luck - the machine doesn't boot, just in safe mode. Right now I copy all my personal stuff to a new external harddrive because TimeMachine doesn't work, after this I will do a clean install of Lion.
It's not hardware related, it's the 10.7.1 update that doesn't work properly. By the way, the only errors remaining are:
WindowServer - kCGErrorFailure
ManagedClient - kCGErrorFailure: CGSPackageGetWorkspaceType: couldn't get workspace type
SecurityAgent - kCGErrorFailure: CGSPackageGetWorkspaceType: couldn't get workspace type
and a lot of:
com.Apple.SecurityAgent.00000000-0000-0000-0000-0000000186A7: CoreAnimation: rendering error 506
that's also the last one I get before the system hangs…

Today I started the install using a OSX 10.6.4 install dvd. It would not install on my Macbook. The general requirements were met, the Macbook booted to the dvd but I received the meesage that I could not install the new OS. So, new question: Any advice on where to get the last release of 10.5 Leopard (> 10.5.2)? Also, does anyone know why Snow Leopard won't work? Is Leopard as far as I can go on this machine?

Windows 7 ultimate 64-bit on early 2008 MacBook

I've searched all over the internet as well as here on the apple site, I can't find a definitive answer either way on this; can I install windows 7 64-bit on my early 2008 MacBook it has 4GB of ram and a 320GB HD inside of it and I plan on wiping the drive and starting over completely before I do the bootcamp; this is because I have a partition on the drive currently and you can't bootcamp an internal HD that already has a partition on it.
I already have Snowleopard installed on the machine so I have bootcamp 3; everything I've seen and read is on vista and XP 64-bit but I can't find a single thing on Windows 7 64-bit on my machine.

Early 2008 MacBook Pro hard drive was killed; how to sync stuff

My early 2008 MacBook Pro hard drive was reimaged (not by me) and they lost everything on there, and have now put in a new hard drive, saying nothing was salvageable on the original HD. I have an iPhone, iPod, iPad. When i get the MBP back, how will I be able to get those devices synced so that everything I've bought/have goes back onto the HD?
The original HD was being reimaged because my work requires use of Windows, and I was using Windows via Boot Camp. Windows got a terrible rogue virus (from my clicking on a link), which shut everything down on that side. Work tech folks said they needed to reimage the Windows part of the drive, but said in the process, the reimaging took everything, Mac stuff included. That's why I'm in this situation. They are going to put in a new hard drive, but it is a blank slate.
Long story short: last time I backed up was 2 years ago, and it wasn't using Time Machine, but an external hard drive. That was also before I got my current iPhone, the iPad and made some additions to iTunes. (For those who say shame on me, for not doing a backup sooner, you're right: But we have gone through 3 moves in 18 months, so it has been kinda nuts.)
I expect the MBP to get sent back to me in the next day. I have no idea how to put these pieces back together. I'm not even sure about data recovery, but am most concerned about iTunes/iPhone/iPod/iPad.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. For instructions, launch the System Preferences application, select Help from the menu bar, and enter “Set up guest users” (without the quotes) in the search box. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Shut down your computer, wait 30 seconds, and then hold down the shift key while pressing the power button.
When you see the gray Apple logo, release the shift key.
If you are prompted to log in, type your password, and then hold down the shift key again as you click Log in.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
*Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of steps 1 and 2.

My early 2008 MacBook suddenly crashed and displayed a white screen with the apple emblem which had lines through it and was pixelated. Now it won't boot up past the apple screen and still has lines through. I reset the dram and it didn't fix the problem. What should I do?

You might run the Apple Hardware Test and that may give some clues. Use the original installation disk that came with your MBP which has the AHT instructions on it.
Ultimately you are looking at an Apple store appointment for a definitive diagnosis. Your MBP probably has GPU or display problems.

Wi-Fi Problems on my Early 2008 MacBook runnning OS X 10.7.5

Hello. I have a Early 2008 MacBook running OS X 10.7.5. When I first got my Macbook for Christmas, it had OS X 10.5.x, and the Wi-Fi connection was running fine, even when I was two rooms away from the router. Then I bought and installed OS X 10.6.3, and then later 10.6.8, and the Wi-Fi was not as god, but it still worked (I could now only be one room away from the router). Then I bought and installed OS X 10.7.5, and the Wi-Fi got a little bit worse, but it still worked one way away from the router. Then one day, after dowloading a lot of stuff from Downloads.com, I check and find out that my Wi-Fi is not working for some reason. I have tried some tricks and tips that people have put out, and have read the major Lion Wi-Fi Issue forum post, but still nothing works. I am wondering if I should downgrade to Snow Leopard (though then I can't download a lot of apps from the App Store, and I won't be able to publish iOS games to the App Store using GameSalad). Can anyone give me advice or help me? Thanks:)

Early 2008 MacBook Pro - no chime, no video, sleep light solid

Have here an Early 2008 MacBook Pro, 15", 2.5GHz. It's in good physical shape... shows no signs of spillage, being dropped or mishandled, etc. I know virtually nothing of its history.
The machine will charge the battery. When I attempt to turn it on, I hear the fans and drives do their thing - but I get no video (internal or external, not even the backlight) and no chimes or tones. The sleep indicator light turns on and stays on, solid white.
Tried the SMC reset proceedure outlined here (remove battery, hold power key 5secs, reinstall battery and try again) - no effect.
My gut reaction is bad logic board, but wanted to check here before giving up on it. Anything I might be missing?

I've worked extensively with the older PPC (and, dare I go back so far, 68K) machines, just not up on all the common issues and techniques for the Intel-based Macs. This seems hardware-y to me, just want to make sure I'm not missing something relatively simple.
Pressing D (or any other key/s) doesn't have any effect, as the machine isn't making it that far into the boot process.
EDIT: the message above was posted as I was typing.
I was afraid it could be that... heard it to be a common thing, but never seen one do it in person. Too bad the warranty extension just ended a month ago, else I would have had more motivation to make the trek to the Genius Bar.
My strong suspicion that it's a logic board issue, and that I've got myself a fancy aluminum paperweight, is getting stronger.

Early 2008 macbook pro will not boot

Good morning! Last night I was working on compiling some video footage from a DVD on my early 2008 MacBook Pro. I put the computer to sleep with a DVD in the drive. This morning it will not wake up and it won't boot--I never make it to the apple logo. I do hear either a fan or the DVD drive for a moment.

Also hold the trackpad button down when you reboot so the DVD ejects.

And note, any attached USB device may not support Energy Saver. Keep those removed until you reboot, after putting the machine to sleep.

Mavericks on a an early 2008 MacBook

I have an early 2008 MacBook running 10.7.5. I received an update to load Mavericks?? I thought a late 2008 MacBook Pro was as far back as Mavericks would go. Normally you don't receive an update request unless it applies to your platform.

No, it won't. Updating other software to versions compatible with Mavericks isn't the same as installing Mavericks.

Slow firewire 800 speeds on early 2008 macbook pro 17"

I've got an early 2008 macbook pro 17". I'm transferring files between a WD mybook studio II (2TB) configured as raid-1 to a sata dock with a seagate 1TB drive daisy-chained over firewire 800. both 1TB drives in the WD mybook and the 1TB seagate in the sata dock are 7.2k rpm. I'm running a block-level clone FROM the mybook TO the seagate using Carbon Copy Cloner which i would think would be the fastest real-world test i could do. I'm getting pegged speeds of 40MB/s. This is on par with other regular read/write speeds i've noticed in the past. this seems way off. to remove variables i unplugged my two firewire 400 drives (as i've heard that may slow things down, even though they're not doing anything during the clone) and it SLOWED DOWN the fw800 clone to 38MB/s ! plugging the two firewire 400 drives back in during the clone brought the speeds back up to 40MB/s. i don't have a unibody 2009 mbp that had the firewire issues.
1) HDD's should read at 70-80MB/s and at least write at 59 MB/s, why am i not getting that using firewire 800 and two 7200 rpm drives ?? (i know the wd mybook is raid-1 but i'm reading from it...shouldn't effect read performance)
2) (less important) why on earth would having two firewire 400 drives plugged in and inactive make the firewire 800 transfer speeds go up/down 2MB/s
i'm willing to experiment with anyone's suggestions. huge thanks in advance.

i have a similar problem.
i have a new seagate freeagent 1tb drive w/FW800, FW400 and USB2.0 ports, and its connected via the FW800 port/cable to my macbook pro, and read/write speeds are really slow, particularly read speeds.
i'm currently working on an audio project with around 15 audio tracks running at once, and it chokes the drive ('HD overload' errors), so i've done some benchmark testing using Drive Genius and Xbench. the results show that the drive is averaging around 12mb/s read speed, and around 26mb/s write speed. grim.
i tried the drive with the FW400 connection on my missus' old imac g5, and its much faster than my mbp's FW800 connection, so i decided to try the drive back on my machine with OSX booted in Safe mode, and benchmark it again. the results are massively different; the FW800 connection is very fast (as you'd expect).
both the tests were done with all my peripherals attached (usb hub, ethernet cable, usb2 ext. drive) so i don't think the problem is with those.
what i'm wondering is if there are any known system extensions that can screw with the FW bus speeds? if not, any pointers as to where i should start troubleshooting?

And again....Apple has left older (Early 2008) macbook's off the update chart for the new OS X Mavericks... Their isn't a thing wrong with my macbook why should I upgrade to another? I want the software, I'm gonna say it....I'm sorry...I love my Apple but even PC's are capable of running different OS for years and years and years. Most of them if they do need to upgrade its just their memory enhanced. You should be Better then the competitor apple!
Hopefully I'm incorrect and OSX Maverick will be capable (doubt it since Moutain Lion wasn't)
