Why won't my eMac run OS X?

I bought an older eMac from someone and tried to install OS X (it had OS 9) but the installer quit and said "the installer has unexpectedly quit (error 1)" . what does error 1 mean? I thought it didn't have enough RAM so I ordered 1GB, installed it, but OS X still won't install. And now when I turn on the computer it tries to run OS X but freezes and a little bow with some text comes up in the upper left corner of the monitor.
Does anyone know what the problem is or what hardware I might update to fix the problem? Here are the specs:
iMac version 1.2.1
CPU: PowerPC,G4 @ 800 MHz
Cache: 256 K L2 @ 800 MHz
1 GB of RAM
32 MB VRAM

The same version of Apple Hardware Test was used for some eMac and iMac versions. It's been a while since I ran AHT, so I don't remember if it says eMac or iMac, but you're certainly describing an eMac.
What color is the label on the OS X Install disc you were given when you bought the eMac? If it's a retail (black label) OS X disc, it should have the version number on it (e.g., 10.1.4, 10.2.2, 10.4.6, etc.). It it's the model-specific disc that originally shipped with the eMac, then there's something about the OS X version number and "eMac" in very tiny print on the label.
It's possible that the seller gave you the original OS X disc that came with the eMac, but that at some time the original owner upgraded to a later version, say from 10.2.x to 10.4.x Because of changes introduced to disc formatting with OS X 10.4, you can't go back to an earlier OS X version without doing an Erase and Install. Or, if the original OS X disc is for the 10.1.4 taht came with eMacs during the first few months on the market prior ro the release of 10.2, one of the missing features in 10.1.x was the ability to do an Archive and Install --- the only way to reinstall 10.1.x is to erase the hard drive and start from scratch.
If you don't have the Applications CD that came with the eMac, an Erase&Install could prove troublesome. You may want to consider investing yet more money into your purchase, and get the Tiger OS X 10.4 retail install disc. My own experience is that a first-generation 700 MHz eMac with 640 MB RAM is still respectfully quick, especially running 10.4, which is much more responsive that 10.2 or earlier. Your 800 MHz eMac with 1 GB of RAM should do quite nicely running 10.4. You can use the tips in Gulliver - Tiger Upgrade Guide.
One possible complication: some early eMacs came with a CD-RW or CD-ROM only, with no DVD-ROM or DVD-RW ability, and Tiger 10.4 is only sold as a DVD. Apple used to have an exchange program where for something like a US$10 handling fee, you could exchange the Tiger DVD for a set of CDs (7 or 10 CDs, or something like that), but the website offering the exchange program has been taken down after the program had been extended six times. There have been reports of users successfully getting the CD exchange by calling the Apple Store and getting a live operator, then asking if there were any copies of the CD exchange set still available --- Apple had some sets left in the supply chain when the exchange program finally ended, and they were unofficially still available a few months ago at least.
Or you could pick up a Firewire external DVD-RW drive for around US$100 and boot the OS X Install disc from that using Startup Manager.

    why won't photoshop cc run portraiture 2?? Am I doing something wrong?

    Yes, you aren't giving us enough information to help you.
    What version of Photoshop?
    What OS version?
    Why is portraiture2 not working?
    Have you contacted the makers of that plugin?

  • Why won't Photoshop CC run on my laptop I just installed it today

    Why won't Photoshop CC run on my laptop I just installed it today. I signed out on my desktop but the laptop still will not run Photoshop CC. It starts but then closes itself down immediately after starting.

    Well it is the same Win7 that is running on my desktop and yes I have an internet connection and at that time is was hard wired not wireless. I just downloaded and installed the Photoshop and Bridge Apps. The laptop is about 2 yrs old and it is a high end machine and Photoshop6 runs on it just fine. I sure wish someone from Adobe would answer this question as it is beyond frustrating to me that this stuff works so poorly and you can never get a good answer out of them about anything ever.

  • Why won't Elements 5 run?

    Why won't Elements 5 run on my Win 7 Pro machine?  When this custom machine was  first set up, all the programs running on my prior Dell Win XP machine were installed on this machine, including Elements 5.
    Recently, my hard drive crashed and the mfg couldn't install most of the programs I had, including Elements 5. I still had the original disk and installed the program. It went through the installation and put a shortcut on my desktop. Unfortunately, when I clicked on the short cut, nothing happened. I went to the location of the the executable file and clicked on it. Same thing.
    I went to my tech support company and they helped me uninstall the program and we "repaired" the program but it still wouldn't run. We reinstalled from the CD and it still wouldn't run.
    Is there anyway, I can get my program to run? If it comes down to having to purchase a new program, I'll just use the Windows photo program. I think whatever is going on is lousy!

    Did you try right clicking and run as administrator?
    You could also try setting up a new user account an see if it will run from there.
    I'm running  version 5 on one machine with W7 Pro 64 bit with no problems.

  • Why won't JavaFX programs run?

    I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 and firefox. If I go to http://javafx.com/samples/ and try to launch one of the samples I get redirected to a page that says I need a newer version of java.
    If I run java -version from the command line I get:
    java version "1.6.0_20"
    Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_20-b02)
    Java HotSpot(TM) Server VM (build 16.3-b01, mixed mode)
    This is the same version as the one the web page wants me to download. Why won't these demos launch?

    Generally, there are some additional steps to configure the sun java plugin for firefox browsers on Unix systems
    http://java.com/en/download/help/linux_install.xml. Scroll down to the firefox section to get a sense of how to do it.
    A quick and fast solution (without configuration) to see the demos is to click on the launch button above each demo sample and then open it with javaws (from the bin directory of your java installation). Hope this helps!

  • Why won't 5 Emacs out of 30 consistently come up with the userlist?

    Hi,
    I have 5 emacs running 10.4.7 (also occurred on 10.4.6) as a part of 30 networked imacs in a school computer lab. The won't consistently come up with the userlist, except when you delete the cache files. The cache files then become corrupted again and we have to repeat the process.
    The network settings appear to be identical between machines and I even recabelled the lab to try and eliminiate the problem - didn't work - looks nice though! Swapping and replacing the switches didn't help either.
    Can anyone come up with a reliable solution?

    On one of the machines experiencing the problem, note down the modification date of one of the cache files, and then look through the computer's log files for entries made around that time; this may or may not identify what is corrupting the files. If that doesn't work, delete the files and set the permissions on the folder which previously contained them to Read Only for all accounts through the Ownership & Permissions section of the Finder's Get Info window; this may solve the issue. If it doesn't, whatever is causing the files to become corrupt is running as root. Further information may be provided by checking which account is listed as the owner of the files in the Get Info window.

  • Why won't my vi run outside of the LV2011 project explorer?

    I've created a LV2011 project. The vi's within this project open executables to perform measurement functions. When I open the vi's from within the project explorer window the executables open with no issues. However, with the LV project closed and opening the vi's from "windows explorer" the executables won't launch. It seems like I need to have the LV project explorer window open. However that does not work very well in a manufacturing environment. What is the dependency relationship of running vi's in or out of the LV project? How can I remove this dependence?

    crossrulz,
    Good point.  Nice to run executables and I agree.  In a perfecct world thats what would happen.  Do you know what the constraints are for vis in a LV project?  Here is the error:

  • Why won't these files run on my Archlinux?

    I wasn't really sure which category to post this in.
    Anyway I'm trying to run the files in the bin/ directory of the archive I've uploaded here:
    http://www.filedropper.com/jaglinuxtools
    On Archlinux all I get is:
    bash: ./aln: cannot execute binary file
    and so on for the other three files.
    I can boot up a live CD of another Linux distribution (kubuntu in this case), mount my Linux partition, and run the files from the same directory, and they all behave as they're supposed to.
    What's the deal here?  I'm sure my permissions are set up correctly in Archlinux. I've chmodded the files with an a+x on my machine and I even setuid/setgid on the suggestion of someone from the Atari Jaguar forums.  That archive has the original files with unmodified permissions, by the way.
    Anyone have any clue why this isn't working on my Archlinux?  Does it work on any of your Archlinux setups either?

    Actually come to think of it, back when I was running i686 the files did work the first time I used them, but I did a pacman -Syu shortly afterward and after that they started giving this error about not being able to execute them.  It would make sense if the official Archlinux kernel options were changed to exclude this type of binary between my upgrades at that time.

  • Why won't my G3 run 10.3.9?

    This is a third (backup/music) Mac. It's been running 10.3.5 for several months. I thought I would update it along with iTunes this weekend. I'm sure Apple is wondering why I've registered my OS over a dozen times in the last three days.
    It has never done the same thing twice as far as failing during rebooting. This compter is a G3 rev. 1 400 MHz. Tech Tools Pro says everything checks OK. I have a brand new WD 120 GB hard drive. I've swapped the SCSI card to one that says Mac Apple SCSI-2 even though I have no SCSI devices connected. I'm using an Apple ADB keyboard with a logitech USB mouse. I should have left this machine at 10.3.5. Now it's a paperweight.
    I'm ready to throw this Mac in front of a train.
    Tracy

    Well, I decided to take this G3 back to square 1. The SCSI HD was still in the case so I hooked it p to the SCSI card labled Mac Apple SCSI-2. It has a different part number than the card listed in the firmware update section. The other hard drive is a Western Digital ATA 120 GB HD. I installed 0S 9 on both HD's. The SCSI HD will boot. The ATA HD had a problem loading an audio extension. I copied the extension from the SCSI HD with no luck. I deleted the extension and the ATA HD would boot in OS 9. I installed OS 10.3.5 and upgraded to 10.3.9 on the SCSI HD and it has been running 48 hours with iTune running for more than 24 hours without one crash.
    My other G3 (both are revision 1-1 ATA HD and 2 SCSI HD) would never install OS X on an ATA HD. In fact it destroyed a brand new Western Digital 120 GB HD upgading to 10.3.9, It's been running on an 18 GB SCSI HD for about 2 years and I can count on 2-3 crashes a month. It would not even use the ATA HD for storage. Copying would fail and the compare utility in Toast would show that "successful" copied files were not identical.
    It seems like the revision 1 G3's don't like ATA HD's.

  • Why won't my crontab run?

    I am not knowledgeable in UNIX. But I have a personal crontab that sounds an hourly chime. I have used it successfully since before Panther. I have taken all necessary steps in Leopard but the hourly chime does not sound. Any ideas as to why?
    I notice that Terminal commands to "locate cron" and then "locate deny" lead to two lines not present in the Panther version of UNIX. Could they be or indicate the problem?
    /private/var/at/at.deny
    /private/var/at/cron.deny
    TIA for any help.

    have you thought about converting to launchd?
    Plagiarize the "daily" plist out of /System/Library/LaunchDaemons, edit it (more on this to follow), and put in your ~/Library/LaunchAgents folder.
    In the plist, remove the reference to "hour" and change the minutes to "0"; it'll launch your former cron script at the top of every hour. In ProgramArguments array, use full path to your script that you want to run -- not stuff like "~/Documents". man launchd and man launchd.plist are, insofar as man pages go, reasonably comprehensible. Also, afp548.com has a basic tutorial article at http://www.afp548.com/article.php?story=20050620071558293

  • Why won't this script run in task scheduler properly?

    Hello,
    I've created a script find all opened windows applications on the local computer.  The script creates an html outfile to report the opened windows and who is logged in.
    When I run this script from the Powershell ISE or from Powershell command line it works fine.  When I schedule this script to run in windows Task Scheduler (either in Windows 7 or on Windows Server 2008) and I use 'Run only when user is logged in' the
    script again runs fine and reports in the html file the opened windows.
    But when I am logged into the server and I schedule this script to run in windows Task Scheduler (either in Windows 7 or on Windows Server 2008) and I use 'Run whether user is logged in or not' the script will run without error, it creates the html report,
    but it does not list the opened windows applications  That part of the report is missing.
    Why would this happen?  Do I need to change something in my script to make this script work whether or not someone is logged in?
    Here is the script:
    $a = "<style>"
    $a = $a + "BODY{background-color:peachpuff;}"
    $a = $a + "TABLE{border-width: 1px;border-style: solid;border-color: black;border-collapse: collapse;}"
    $a = $a + "TH{border-width: 1px;padding: 0px;border-style: solid;border-color: black;background-color:thistle}"
    $a = $a + "TD{border-width: 1px;padding: 0px;border-style: solid;border-color: black;background-color:PaleGoldenrod}"
    $a = $a + "</style>"
    get-wmiobject Win32_ComputerSystem | ConvertTo-HTML -head $a -body "<H2>Logged in UserID</H2>" -property username | Out-File C:\Powershell_Scripts\Test.htm ; Get-Process |where {$_.mainWindowTItle} |Select-Object name,mainwindowtitle | ConvertTo-HTML -head $a -body "<H2>Open Applications</H2>" | Out-File C:\Powershell_Scripts\Test.htm -Append
    Thank you.

    Its hard to get a full grasp of the errors from task scheduler.  Try rewriting the Action portion of the Scheduled Task in a cmd prompt (with or without the elevated credentials). When the cmd line runs, the cmd host will convert to a black
    powershell host and you will be able to read the errors.
    C:\> powershell.exe -command { update-help }
    or
    C:\> powershell.exe -noprofile -file c:\scripts\dosomething.ps1
    I solved a similar problem this week.  When I ran my script from within powershell, all the required modules are normally present and the script ran fine.  It was pretty clear which module I forgot to load at the beginning of the script once I could
    watch it from start to finish
    or, your script could dump the Error logs to a text file.
    $Error | select * | out-file c:\errors.txt
    Not the point.  Look at the task scheduler history first.  If the history is not enabled enable it. If it shows no error code then the script ran successfully but had an internal error.
    There is only one place that an error can occur. This will trap it and set the exit code which will be visible in the event history:
    $a=@'
    <style>
    BODY{
    background-color:peachpuff;
    TABLE{
    border-width: 1px;
    border-style: solid;
    border-color: black;
    border-collapse: collapse;
    TH{
    border-width: 1px;
    padding: 0px;
    border-style: solid;
    border-color: black;
    background-color:thistle;
    TD{
    border-width: 1px;
    padding: 0px;
    border-style: solid;
    border-color: black;
    background-color:PaleGoldenrod
    </style>
    Try{
    $username=get-wmiobject Win32_ComputerSystem |%{$_.username}
    $precontent="<H2>Logged in User: $username</H2><br/><H2>Open Applications</H2><br/>"
    $html=Get-Process |where {$_.mainWindowTItle} -ErorAction Stop|
    Select-Object name,mainwindowtitle |
    ConvertTo-HTML -cssuri c:\scripts\style.css -preContent $precontent -body "<body bgcolor='peachpuff'/>"
    $html | Out-File C:\Scripts\Test.htm -ErrorAction Stop
    Catch{
    exit 99
    This is really an exercise in how to manage background tasks.
    Using an error log is good assuming it is not the file system that you are having an issue with
    ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

  • Why won't my imovie run properly, I have to keep force quitting it?

    I have version 9.0.4 and have had imovie for 2 years now on my new imac.  When I first got it i tried making a movie by stringing together some of my video clips from iphoto, and even then the apple wheel would show up on the screen and nothing would happen so I would have to force quit.  Even now when I open it eventually all my videos and pictures from iphoto will pop up on the bottom of the screen but it takes forever, and then when I go to click on one or anywhere on the screen for that matter the apple wheel comes up again! So sufficite it to say I HAVE NEVER ever been able to utilize my imovie.   I have a wide number of pictures and videos (9,000 at least) in iphoto and am wondering if this is the reason for it being so slow because it is trying to load all of this data? (I have plentyyyy of storage left on my computer)
    Yesterday I downloaded 9.0.4 update on apple website hoping that this would work, it asked me if I wanted to import my iphoto videos and I said yes and it took about 40 minutes, but I am still haveing the same problem....I wonder if I should have said "no" to this.  Is there another UPDATE that I should downlaod to replace this version of imovie or is their something different i can do?
    I'm running snow leopard version 10.6.8,   2.93 GHz,    intel core i7

    UPDATE:  From reading some other post I believe that my large video files in iphoto are lagging my imovie so I guess I should have never imported the thumbnails, but the question is now how can I delete them from imovie?  (so i can just import them manually when I work on a video)  I go into the iphoto folder and see a folder labeled "thumbnails" and in that are 3 folders labeled 2011 2012 2013 and one more item (not a folder, but a piece of paper icon) but its labeled imovie data.  I really dont want to delete anything  but was wondering if this has anything to do with it.

  • Why won't iTune 11 run on Windows 7 64-bit???

    Starting 3 ior 4 weeks ago -ever since updating to iTunes 11, I have been unable to start iTunes. I have tried every suggestion in the support community posting  (and a few that were not here) all to no avail. This involved many uninstalls (including components 1 at a time), reinstalling as a package and as individual components, updating, as well as uninstalling/reinstalling the .NET framework, and a number of other things. I did get access to iTunes for a short time by removing everything and installing V9.x.x, but this version would not allow me to access my wifes iPhone (she uses my iTunes - or did anyway.) Today I once again allowed an automatic update to 11, praying that it would work. Successful install, but will not run. I get the same Error 7 (windows 127) as before. The only difference is a different dll listed. I AM SICK OF THIS!!!
    If anyone from Apple monitors these boards, could you please let me know when you are going to supply a good version of iTunes? You are about to lose not 1 customer, but four, including my wife and daughters, as well as iPhone users, as we will be switching to android phone at our next wireless renewal.

    Many thanks again.
    The procedure entry point FigSubtitleStringCreatePropertyList could not be located in the dynamic link library MediaToolbox.dll.
    That's a less common one ... so we might be looking at incidental damage to an Apple Application Support program file rather than something specifically 11.1.4.62-related.
    Restart the PC. Head into your Uninstall a program control panel, select "Apple Application Support" and click "Repair".
    Does the repair install go through okay? If so, can you launch iTunes without the error?

  • Why won't my program run when I schedule it.

    I am trying to schedule an executable and it says it is successful, but the program never runs.  I even tried setting up a simple batch file that will call the program and when I schedule it it says successful but never runs. When I run it on the desktop of the server it runs fine and the batch job runs fine.  I have tried configuring it several different ways and adding supporting files.  I have never scheduled a program in this application, so I'm sure I'm just missing something.  Can someone please tell me how to set this up or give me an example.  It is driving me crazy.
