Why won't my Ethernet cable work on my Windows Partition on my iMac?

I have just purchased an iMac and have set up a Windows 7 partiton. However my ethernet connection that works just fine when I use the Mac OS does not work at all on my windows partition.
It will not let me update my driver since the driver apparently cannot be found, and I obviously cannot find it on the internet since I have no connection!
Has anyone had the same problem or know how to get around this?

How is MS Windows installed? Are you using Boot Camp, Fusion, Parallels etc... and if so why not post on those forums. If the issue is Windows related then the issue isn't an iMac issue, it's a Windows problem probably to do with some setting.

  • Why does a Cat5 ethernet cable work and Cat6 doesn't?

I recently moved into a new office within our building here at work and needed to use a longer ethernet cable than the previous employee since we have different desk configuations and so I purchased a new 30-foot Cat6 ethernet cable and plugged it into my iMac but I can't get onto the Web. BUT, when I use the shorter ethernet cable, which is Cat5, left by the previous employee, I get on the Web without a problem. I can't use the Cat5 cable because it's a tripping hazard (and we can't move the desk around without a LOT of effort).
I've also tried another brand new Cat6 ethernet cable and it doesn't work either!
When I have either of the Cat6 cables attached, if I look at [Network] under [System Preferences], the ethernet connection appears to be fine. It's green and it says ethernet is currently active.
I've re-started my Mac after re-connecting the Cat6 cables and that hasn't made a difference. I've checked the connections, etc., and everything appears to be fine on that front.
Why would a Cat5 cable work and neither of the Cat6 cables work?
    (on a late-2006 20-inch iMac running 10.7.5)

Get a Cat5e, you will be lucky to find a new plain Cat5 now.
You should have no problem buying Cat5e.
There is better sheilding in the Cat6 and I think the twists per inch is different but on that I could be wrong. The Cat6 is good up to 250Mhz while Cat5e is 100Mhz, note Mhz not Mb/s.

  • Why won't my itunes account work for the app store on my imac?

I just got my mom's imac, which has her itunes account linked to the app store.
My personal itunes account is logged in in and working in itunes, but when i attempt to log into the app store, it says "Your device or computer could not be verified".
    What's up??

    Thanks for the help.
I just spoke with an apple rep and they walked me through a ton of stuff.
Ended up restarting a couple times they had me move the file "com.apple.appstore.plist"  from Library/Preferences to my desktop and restart.
    Then, logging in worked.
    Thanks again!

  • Why won't the Tabs function work (Open new window in a new tab instead)??

My current problem is- - I'm running FF.32, and when I click on a link (in an email, article, webpage link... anything) it opens in the Current window... it doesn't open a new* window, or new tab (as selected)... it "closes" the current page and opens the clicked-on link or email... Unless* I right-click on it and Tell it to open in a new tab instead (but I have to right-click and tell it to do this). I don't think this is normal. What do I need to change..?

I think it is Firefox's default setting to open links in the current tab unless the site forces the link to open in a new window, or you explicitly open the link in a new tab/window.
You may need an extension like [https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/tab-mix-plus/ Tab Mix Plus] to open links like how you want.

  • I am trying to connect a Windows 7 / 64 bit to an Epson printer on my Mac.  The printer is hooked into the Mac via USB; the Mac is networked to a Linksys wireless router with an ethernet cable, as is the Windows box. Any tips on how to do this?

I am trying to connect a Windows 7 / 64 bit to an Epson printer on my Mac.  The printer is hooked into the Mac via USB; the Mac is networked to a Linksys wireless router with an ethernet cable, as is the Windows box. I installed the current Bonjour printer services software on the Windows machine, and separately installed the driver software for the Epson printer on the WIndows machine.  Running the bonjour wizard, I get an alert saying 'I don't have sufficient access to my computer to connect to the selected printer'.
The printer has 'sharing' turned on from the Mac end; this works with a Powerbook via the wireless connection.  Sharing is also turned on in the Windows printer control panel for this printer (under properties).  The Mac is a G5 running 10.5.8.  When I try to print a page from the Windows machine it gets hung in the print queue.
Any advice how to proceed would be appreciated!
    thx,

A PC can have more issues connecting than a Mac.
But it really should not matter.. so just try it in situ.. press and hold the reset.. once it starts up, it will return to default IP, 10.0.1.1 the PC should then be able to find it via the airport utility.
If not drag it over to the Mac and plug in there by ethernet.. or since it is a laptop, really should not be that difficult to drag the Laptop and plug it into the TC.
Important thing is to get access to the TC.
The Mac if it is running lion, then you MUST download and install 5.6 airport utility to do anything useful.

Why won't iPad video open when emailed to Windows desktop?

    Hey there Ray_J,
I understand that you want iTunes to be opening every time you connect your phone to your computer. You may wish to adjust this setting in your iTunes preferences to affect this behavior:
Prevent iPods, iPhones, and iPads from syncing automatically
Prevent devices from automatically syncing with this iTunes library when a device is connected. To sync a device, click the Sync button when the device is connected.
iTunes 12 for Mac: iTunes Devices preferences

If this is unchecked, iTunes will open automatically when you connect an iOS device. Thanks for being a part of the Apple Support Communities!

  • Help! New iMac won't recognize ethernet cable and can't check it

I just unboxed my new iMac and can't get on the internet (I'm on my powerbook). The problem is this; in Network, it says "The cable for Built-In Ethernet is not plugged in." Only, it is. Can't be the cable b/c that's the cable I'm connected with right now. So, I go through "assist me" and when I click on "Assistant" it takes me to the Intro page where I'm supposed to give a Location Name. I do this, calling it "home." The ver next screen, after clicking "continue" takes me to "How do you connect to the internet?" The problem here is that, of the 5 options, only one is selectable. Airport is the only one that can be selected?? "I use a telephone modem to dial my ISP" as well as "DSL Modem/Cable/Lan" are all greyed out..they cannot be selected. I use an ethernet cable. Why is this not able to be selected? It's very frustrating. I've turned off Airport and Bluetooth, yet I still cannot check any of these. I need to check "I use a cable modem to dial my ISP" but I can't b/c it won't allow me. Can anyone help me here? I can't use my brand new iMac and it's kind of a bummer. I thought these things were plug and play? Thanks.

I went and checked logs. Now, I'm not exactly sure what it means, but this is what it shows in the console.log:
    Mac OS X Version 10.4.10 (Build 8R2218)
    2007-09-28 08:15:33 _0400

    Sep 28 08:15:43 cory/System/Lybrary/CoreServices/mcxd.app/Contents/MacOS/mcxd:
MCXD.initializeDirectoryServices: Unabe to get the ethernet address
So, I'm curious about that last line. I'm completely stumped. I'm going to have to call apple care. I plan to speak with my IT guy who installed my SW to see if there's any pref's or something that my agency puts on the agency computers that would maybe be doing this. He said he'd be doing a "build" on my machine so that I had that same software I have at work, so I could work from home. Don't know how that could cancel out my ability to select Ethernet in my Network Port Configurations, but who knows.
I'm just bummed I have a new computer and can't get it up and running.

  • Brand new 20" iMac won't recognize Ethernet cable - can't get online

I just got my iMac and cannot get the ethernet cable to recgonize. I know it works b/c I'm using it this very moment to type this on my Powerbook. When I plug it into the PB, I get the yellow, then the green once it connects. However, when I plug it into the iMac, I get nothing. I thought maybe I needed to configure Built-In Ethernet, but it won't let me select configure or connect. The assistant won't recognize it either. I posted in the Tiger forum mistakenly, but thought this forum would be more appropriate. This is what I posted (for more detail):

Well I tried that and nothing. I'm completely stumped. I have no idea why this is happening. And it's weird b/c, everytime I'm jumping back on here, I'm just unhooking the ethernet cable from the iMac and plugging it into my PB. And, nearly immediately, i'm up and running, connected with the PB. How can it work on the PB and not on the iMac? And why would those options be grayed out on the iMac? It's like it just refuses to let me check them and/or configure. That is very weird.

  • Will any Cat5 Ethernet cables work equally well for Gigabit ethernet ports?

I'm almost embarrassed to ask this, but I must. Are some Cat 5 Ethernet cables designed for Gigabit Ethernet? The Airport Extreme Base Station(b/g) uses Gigabit Ethernet for its LAN and WAN ports. I think my Comcast modem's single Ethernet port does, also. Currently, I use a Cat 5 100Mbs cable to connect the modem to the AEBS. So, I'm wondering if I can get faster throughput with a Cat 5 1000Mbs cable (if such a thing exists).

In addition to Bob's comments, it's important to understand that Gigabit Ethernet requires using all four pairs of wires inside the cable ... regardless of whether that cable is CAT-5, CAT-5e, or CAT-6 certified. The real difference of the categories is how high of a frequency can they support. For example CAT-6 is rated for 10 Gigabit traffic. It's not that CAT-5 won't work, but it's not guaranteed to do so.
If you have any Ethernet runs in home that is supplying connections for both data & phone lines on the same cable, you will NOT achieve Gigabit speeds on those cables as the installer used at least one of the necessary pairs for the phone line.
