Why won't my Firefox open with my home page instead of a blank tab?

The browser always opens in a new tab even when I have it set to open in my home page. When I have Firefox set as my default browser it opens in a new blank tab when I click a link in a document or email. The only time I get my home page on opening Firefox, is if the browser is already open and I choose to open a new window. However, when I do that I lose my yahoo toolbar settings for the newly opened window. Yes, I have tried removing cookies, and that does not work. This problem is exasperating, I do not like IE, but I use it because it opens links without my having to keep the browser open all the time.

Hi tigerleatoo, I'm not sure I understand your question.
When you launch Firefox using its program icon, you should get your preference from the following tab:
orange Firefox button ''or'' classic Tools menu > Options > General > "When Firefox starts"
So in your case, you should see your home page(s).
When Firefox is completely closed and you launch it using a link in email or a document, Firefox usually will ONLY open that linked page and nothing else. Are you getting a blank tab in addition? Do you want your home page in addition?
Is the problem that you want external links to open a new window when Firefox is already running?
Firefox tries to follow your preference for new tabs vs. new windows for both internal and external links.
In other words, if you have set Firefox to open new windows in a tab here:
orange Firefox button ''or'' classic Tools menu > Options > Tabs
Then external links will usually open in an existing window rather than in their own window.
There is a way to split these so they behave differently, but because the steps are detailed, I won't burden you with those unless you need them.

  • I have my home page set. What I need to find out how to set it so that every tab I open, it opens to my home page instead of a blank tab/page.

I use Firefox at work. We have a standard home page we use. In IE all my new pages open at our home page. With Firefox I have my home page set, but all new windows I open, open as a blank tab/blank page. I want to have all my new windows/tabs to open to my home page.

You can always just middle-click or ctrl+click on the home button to open it in a new tab.
For exactly what you're asking for, there's an addon for that:

  • How do I get a new tab to automatically open as my home page instead of a blank one?

I want to click on the tab button and have my home page appear in the new tab instead of a blank page. Is this possible and, if so, how is it done?

You can also middle-click the Home button, just like any other link. Middle-click and a Ctrl left click also works for some right-click context menu items like View Image and the list that opens with a right click on the Back and Forward button.

  • Firefox does not open with the tabs I had open when I use the quit and save function. Firefox opens with my home page only. how to fix?

When I use the "Save and Quit" function it has no effect. The next time I open Firefox it goes to my home page only.
    == This happened ==
    Every time Firefox opened
    == 3 days ago

This is not a solution, nor a work-around. The only thing this points out is where the problem lies. Settings are meant to be used in all sessions, barring exceptions and the fact that Firefox asks if you'd rather SAVE and then quit, makes it an exception. The user has elected to skip the clear browsing history step.
However, if the settings are permanently changed as you suggest, then the history will always be remembered for eternity when Firefox is closed. You then have to manually clear your history first at every session before closing.
Older versions of Firefox never behaved in such manner and recognized that the Save and Quit superseded the setting to Clear History.

  • How do I get a new tab to open on my home page, instead of a blank white page, with (Untitled) in the tab?

You can middle-click or Ctrl left-click the Home button on the Navigation toolbar to open the Home page in a new tab.

  • How do I make all new tabs open with my home page?

When I open a New Tab, it opens with a blank page.
Is there any setting which will force each New Tab to open with my Home Page?

New Tab in Home Page: You can modify Firefox with an extension, though I personally would not want that at all, before dismissing a tab I make sure there is nothing in the tab in a backward direction, and would consider looking at anything but a blank page for a new tab as a distracting encumbrance but you can do what you ask for.

  • Firefox does not open with my home page

Whatever settings I use (eg Options>Options>General>Show my Home Page), Firefox opens with the page(s) from my last session. I'd quite like my home page back!

I had this problem as well, but was able to solve it using this procedure:
    - Close firefox from the menu (don't use the 'x' as firefox may continue to run in memory for a while)
    - in your start menu, enter the following into the "run" prompt: firefox.exe -P
    - The firefox profile manager will open (see attached image)
    - In my case I deleted the "default" profile because I didn't care about losing any settings. You may want to simply create a new profile instead in case you need to save your settings.
    - To avoid being asked about which profile to be used you can highlight your new profile and then make sure the "Don't ask at startup" checkbox. When ready, press the "Start Firefox" button.
    - Voila! That fixed it for me. Like I said, I just created a new "default" profile and everyone worked fine for me; use your own judgement here.
    Good luck!

  • Why does safari 5.1 open with the last page from previous session?

I don't want Safari 5.1 to open with the last page from the previous session.  How do I stop it?

I too would like to manually or automatically open the windows and tabs I had open from the previous session, but I want to configure this per application.  In a browser for instance, I can have many windows and tabs open and it can take a lot of time to refresh them all. I would like to manually pick the windows/tabs I want to reopen. Before Lion I could restore the last session manually and I liked that ability. Firefox has a plugin for this And what if I reboot with no internet access, they all time out. With a word processor, spreadsheet, or xcode on the other hand, I like to start where I left off. Everything comes from local disk so the restart is fast. I want to control this by app, not globally. Sometime Apple can really be blind to the real needs of users, and that is to configure their envoronment the way the user needs, not the way Apple envisions the need of users.
So Apple, please give ME the opportunity to choose the apps that auto reload the last sesion and give me a manual way to reload the last session on all apps that qualify.
    -KR

  • When I close my browser and reopen, it, all of the tabs that were previously open reopen, does not refresh and open with my home page opening.

when I close my browser and then reopen it, it does not go to the selected home page, but reopens with all of the previous tabs. reviewed the available knowledge based answers, but none seemed to fix problem. I'm not certain that I did everything correctly, but I believe I followed the directions properly. problem persists.

Assuming Firefox is set to start up with your home page, there are two common reasons for this:
    * You have a user.js file instructing Firefox to ignore your previously saved settings and restore the earlier session. See this article on tracking down and removing that file: [[How to fix preferences that won't save]].
    * Firefox is crashing, and doing an automatic crash recovery. As a diagnostic, you can change what Firefox does during a crash recovery, from automatically restoring to showing a list of windows and tabs from your previous session so you can pick and choose what to restore.
    ''To try the change:''
    (1) In a new tab, type or paste '''about:config''' in the address bar and press Enter. Click the button promising to be careful.
    (2) In the search box above the list, type or paste '''sess''' and pause while the list is filtered
    (3) Double-click the '''browser.sessionstore.max_resumed_crashes''' preference and change the value from 1 to 0 and OK that.
    Hope that helps.

  • How do I set my tabs to open with my home page?

When I open a tab, how can I get it to open to my Home Page - the page I have set to open when opening Firefox?

'''To cause new tabs to open at your home page in all windows''':
'''I have added specific instructions to clarify exactly where entries should be made''' to the useful solution by Fred McD. (I'm using Firefox v. 29.0.1).
The procedure is now very easy: just be careful with spelling of entries.
Begin by opening a new window or tab. In the address (aka URL/location) bar, type '''''about:config'''''. If a warning screen comes up, click the '''''Be Careful''''' message.
A new search bar appears below the address bar. Type '''''browser.newtab.url ''''' in it and press Enter.
Below the new search bar is a new header: '''Preference Name''', followed by a long list list of all the possible preferences (settings) that can be changed (one of which is ''browser.newtab.url''). There is no explanation of the function of each; nor is there a corresponding list of possible values for each setting, so before you change one, record its value.
Right click on '''Preference Name''' and from the resulting drop-down list click on '''''Modify'''''. A small window will open which contains a field containing the current value for browser.newtab.url. Note its value, then overwrite it with '''''about:home''''' to select the default Firefox home page for all new tabs. The new setting is immediately active: close the window.
This method leaves the address bar of a new tab blank, unlike clicking the '''Home''' icon, so a different URL may be quickly entered if desired. (The new tabs have the unexpected generic title "Mozilla Firefox Start Page")
    Other possible settings are:
about:newtab (shows the site most visited)
    about:blank (a blank page)
any web page address (URL) you choose
The same instructions apply to New Window settings, but beginning with the entry '''''browser.startup.homepage''''' .

  • I used to be able to click the Home icon using my center wheel to cause a new tab to open with my home page. This feature no longer works. Please advise.

Suddenly, when I click the Home icon in the upper right of my Firefox page using my center wheel, a new tab no longer opens as
my home page. Now, nothing happens when I do this.

There's an extension or two, or a combination of extensions which seem to be causing that in Firefox 6.0.2. One that has been mentioned is TabMix Plus.
    http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/troubleshooting+extensions+and+themes
You need to figure out what is causing it, and disable that extension/s until they are fixed by their developer.
