Why won't my iMac start up after I put my password in. It just stops on the screen with the apple logo

I turned on my iMac today running Lion and typed in my password and it went to the gray screen with the apple logo and a little wheel spinning below it and won't go any further. Ive tried the Pram reset with cmd alt r p. no help. Ive tried a safe boot. No help. I've unpluged everything to it and unpluged the iMac itself. No help. One other thing I wanna try but I don't think I can is starting with the install cd. But oh wait, lion was a download only. So I don't have a disk. I have a snow leopard install disk. I put that in just so I can get to my disk utility.  When I got there I saw that my HD drive was not mounted and it wont let me repair it. I'm thinking this has to do with using the snow leopard cd. Maybe it will show mounted if I tried a lion cd that I don't have. Any ideas????

Please read Apple's Gray screen appears during startup, you have performed some of the troubleshooting steps however I'd recommend starting over from the beginning of the advice letter and following the instructions to the letter.

  • Macbook starts up with chime  then white screen with grey apple logo and spinning gear appears and continues to spin

Help,  Turned on MacBook Pro this morning and just get a white screen with grey apple logo and spinning gear.  Cannot access desktop.

Computer starts up in Safe boot by holding down the shift button.   But when I go to restart the same thing happens.  What should I do?

  • Magsafe has no light, MBP starts but just spins on the Apple Logo, more...

    This is a friends 17" 2.16 model
Magsafe has no light but works, MBP starts but just spins on the Apple Logo, the battery has no charge. I have a 2.4ghz model so checked the charger... it works AND lights up on mine. The battery (a replacement battery, 8 months old) does not take a charge in my mbp (had it installed for 30"). I connected via firewire in Target mode - it didn't mount so I tried to "repair" the connected HD via Disk Utility.... after about 5" a simple message came up saying that it was unable to repair the drive.
Ran Tech Tool Pro and only managed to run scan blocks on it which at least mounted the drive so I could retrieve files etc but no other diagnostic would work.
Did a SMC on it - no change.
When I tried starting it and held down any combination of alt, control, shift keys etc it would just immediately go into shutdown.
Anybody have an idea what might be wrong and how much it might cost to repair?

Does your friend's 2.16 MBP have the original hard drive? If so, the hard drive could be failing. It would be 3 years old, and the useful life of a hard drive is 3-5 years.
Have you tried your known good battery in your friend's MBP? If the battery won't charge with a known good adaptor and a known good battery after a SMC, then there could be a problem with the Left I/O Board.
I have heard of a dying hard drive affecting the optical drive as well. If TTP was not able to do any diagnostic test, I am wondering if the problem might be with the optical drive.
The worst possibility would be a bad logic board.
Have you tried a PRAM reset?
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379?viewlocale=en_US
These are just some guesses. With a known good battery and adaptor cable, you may be able to determine if the Left I/O Board is OK. However, you may end up needing to go to Apple or an AASP for a real diagnosis. If you are anywhere near an Apple Store, you can make an appointment at the genius bar and get an evaluation for free. If it's just a hard drive or the left I/O Board, the repair should not be too much. If the logic board, it could be quite expensive.
    Good luck!

  • My iPad wont turn on, its black screen then i press home power buttons together and white screen with black apple logo come out after 5 seconds black "lighten" screen comes out and its stuck just like that! Whats the problem?

    HI
this happened today suddenly while i was working on my iPad it kicked my out of the app that i was using then white screen with black apple logo came out, i thought it was an ordinary thing cause this happens all the time with me, but this time it refused to turn on! After the white screen with the black logo vanished i wad waiting for my lock screen but no, a black screen showed up just like that! And could tell it was black "lighten" screen i tried more than 10 times to do the home+power thing but it wont work, whats wrong with my ipad!

If the battery is completely drained it may take some time while on the charger before the iPad responds. Plug the iPad into the charger that came with it and plug that into a good wall outlet. Wait one hour. Then reset your device. Press and hold the Home and Sleep buttons simultaneously until the Apple logo appears. Let go of the buttons and let the device restart. If the iPad restarts let it continue to charge until the battery is 100%. If it doesn't start up make an appointment at an Apple Store to have your device examined by a technician. Or contact Apple Support. They will examine your iPad and explain your options.

my 27 inch 2011 iMac is not boting up, the cumputer is stuck on a grey screen with no apple logo or spinnign wheel. The iMac is not giving power to the keyboard as it is not ligthing up the caps lock botton when pressed.

And update to the latest version 10.8.4 system after updating the system I have the problem appeared to take off the device and stops at the apple logo for about 5 minutes and then enters the desktop How can I solve this problem and thank you

If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Step 1
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes) in the search box. Note the timestamps of those log messages, which refer to the times when the system was booted. Now clear the search box and scroll back in the log to the last boot time when you had the problem. Select the messages logged after the boot, during the time something abnormal was happening. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
For example, if the problem is a slow startup taking three minutes, post the messages timestamped within three minutes after the boot time, not before. Please include the BOOT_TIME message at the beginning of the log extract.
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
    Step 2
Still in Console, look under System Diagnostic Reports for crash or panic logs, and post the entire contents of the most recent one, if any. In the interest of privacy, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if present (it may not be.) Please don’t post shutdownStall, spin, or hang logs — they're very long and not helpful.

  • TS1702 After installing iOS6 to my iPhone4, it wouldn't turn on now and is just stuck on the Apple logo. Why iask us to install iOS6 if there are bugs like this? Now my provider is asking me to get a replacement phone for an added cost at my expense.

Is there still a remedy for my hone that's stuck on the Apple logo every time I reboot. I can no longer get back to installing iOS6 again. Upon checking itunes, it said that there was an error in the download. I need help!

I have the same problem with iPhone 3GS, it wont connect to cell data after update to iOS 6.

  • MBP won't boot. When starting there's weird video artifacts, but it never makes it past the apple logo.

My MBP is an early 2011. At boot the screen is full of a strange video artifacts and never usually makes it past the boot screen. I tried this in windows with the same result. I've reset SMC, PRAM, uninstalled and reinstalled my ram, etc with no luck. I had this problem before and luckily was able to make it to the recovery menu to reinstall OSX and they did the trick. But this time I can't even get that far..... Check out the pic below. It's kind of crappy but you can see the artifacts if you look at the apple logo closely.

That clearly indicates that your computer's GPU is damaged, and you are not the only one.
If you have got a 15-inch MacBook Pro, Apple has started recently a free replacement program for all MacBooks Pro affected by defective GPUs like yours. You only have to take the Mac to an Apple Store or reseller to get it fixed for free. If you want to know more about the replacement program, have a look at the Apple site -> https://www.apple.com/support/macbookpro-videoissues/
However, if you have got a 13-inch MacBook Pro, there is no replacement program, so you will have to pay for the repair.

  • Black screen with white apple logo won't go away! Help please.

Last night I turned theipod completeley off and restarted it. The black screen with the white apple logo came on and hasn't went of since.
I've tried everything I could find in the forums and on the support page.
iTunes will not recognize my ipod which has continously tried to start up again every 5 minutes.
I don't know what more to do, ANY help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks
    Dana

I did try that. When I do that the red slider bar to turn the ipod off doesn't come up.
Its still trying to reset itself but won't go any farther than the black screen with white apple.
    Thanks

  • My battery drained in my iPad 4S and now it won't charge and just cycles through the Apple logo and battery low screens. I can't turn the machine off or on

My battery drained on my iPad 4s and now I can't turn it off or on. It just continues to cycle through the Apple Logo scree for about 10 seconds and than goes blank. Any thoughts would be appreciated

Try this  - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.) No data/files will be erased. http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1430

  • Why did my iphone 4 just go to the apple logo then go straight back to the home screen?

I was just listening to music on my iPhone when all of a suden my music cut off. I looked right at my phone to see that it went to the apple logo then a few seconds later it went right back to my home screen. The only thing I had open on my phone was my music and a text message I left open for a moment. Is there a reason why my phone shut off? Is somethign wrong? Or am I jsut worrying for nothing?

    Try reset iPad
Hold down the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears
Note: Data will not be affected.

  • Why won't my iMac start?

I couldn't start my iMac a few days ago. Nothing seemed to help...until maybe the 30th time I tried to get it started, it finally started. After that, I had no problems--until last night, when it again refused to start, and again this morning when it still wouldn't start. I tried everything contained in the the bible of iMac maintenance and repair, "Sad Macs, Bombs, and other Disasters," but still it wouldn't start. I was resigned to buying a second-hand computer to tide me over until I bought my new one, when the unexpected happened: it started. I just pushed on the power button as I had already done for perhaps 50 times, and it started, just as it had when the computer was in the bloom of youth.
What are some of the likely reasons for the problem I'm having...sometimes. Is it at all possible that the room temperature might have something to do with it?
A few additional comments: the reset button seemed to have no effect whatsoever. The result for most of those 50 unsuccessful attempts described above was that the Power Button would light up for a fraction of a second and a starting tone would sound, and then the computer would go out. Other times nothing would happen. No light. No sound.
I'm not going to turn off my computer again until I buy the new one. Let me know if that might not be a wise thing to do.

now does your mac turn on but go to a black screen
with colors of vertical lines, then when you
    restart
    it, it does something different?
    No
    My iMac will run
fine on hours end when i consistantly use it at
    one
    time.
    So does mine.
but then i go to sleep wake up to find that
    it
takes me 10 or 11 times to turn it
on...wait...restart and finally get to the
homescreen. after that its peaches and cream.
You're lucky. It takes me more tries than that. When I said 50, I wasn't kidding. Maybe more than that.
    a
buddy of mine told me that it could be the
permissions which repair can be made in the disk
utility. i've tried unplugging my computer for a
while then using it later (i moved 3 hours away
    from
home with it next to my lap) and it only took
    longer
to get it to the homescreen. i ran a hardware test
    and everything is fine.
My computer has now been cleared by TechTool Pro, Disk Warrior, and the program that comes with the computer (Disk Utility?). Unfortunatley, my computer hasn't yet gotten the word, becauee it still doesn't want to start.
    the usual advice online or
from mac is to reinstall OS X. it is a software
problem i beleive. i reinstalled OS X, but no
    return.
im erasing my hard drive and starting over.
I try to avoid things like that. I don't have enough confidence in my abilities.
    i've
    lost
hope. by the way is this like anything you where
    going through?
No, my problem is just as I've described. The only thing we have in common is that I have no problems during the day, but every morning is another battle.
Are you talking about an iMac G3 CRT?
    Yes
    You have an
iMac G5 listed as being your computer. Reason I'm
asking is because if you are talking about a G3 CRT
and if you installed OS X on it without updating the
firmware, you need to update the firmware REAL QUICK,
and do not, under any circumstances, reset the PRAM
until after you get the firmware updated.
I didn't trust myself to install the OS X, so I had it done by an Apple authorized computer repair shop. Of course, I've found that "Apple authorized" is no guarantee of good service. I could tell you some stories about one that you probably wouldn't believe. Fortunately for the unknowing public, they went out of business. Oh, as to the FIRMWARE, I checked on it anyway, and I do have the required version.
If you actually have an iMac G5, there is a separate
discussion area for that machine, so disregard the
firmware comment if that is the case.
Going through the starting process is a real pain in the neck, so I'm going to try to keep the computer "awake" tonight by giving it something to do. "Indexing" the Hard Drive seems to take forever, so I'm going to ask it to do that before I go to bed. Maybe that will keep it from shutting itself off.
Oh, one last thing, maybe the Apple Repair Manual would have your answers. Just be careful when you buy it on amazon or elsewhere that your're geting the right manual and that the seller is in America. I wasn't careful, so I now have to wait for it to be delivered from England. Also, it cost me about $17, whereas I'm told that it can be purchased for around $6.
