Why won't my iMac start?

I couldn't start my iMac a few days ago. Nothing seemed to help...until maybe the 30th time I tried to get it started, it finally started. After that, I had no problems--until last night, when it again refused to start, and again this morning when it still wouldn't start. I tried everything contained in the the bible of iMac maintenance and repair, "Sad Macs, Bombs, and other Disasters," but still it wouldn't start. I was resigned to buying a second-hand computer to tide me over until I bought my new one, when the unexpected happened: it started. I just pushed on the power button as I had already done for perhaps 50 times, and it started, just as it had when the computer was in the bloom of youth.
What are some of the likely reasons for the problem I'm having...sometimes. Is it at all possible that the room temperature might have something to do with it?
A few additional comments: the reset button seemed to have no effect whatsoever. The result for most of those 50 unsuccessful attempts described above was that the Power Button would light up for a fraction of a second and a starting tone would sound, and then the computer would go out. Other times nothing would happen. No light. No sound.
I'm not going to turn off my computer again until I buy the new one. Let me know if that might not be a wise thing to do.

now does your mac turn on but go to a black screen
with colors of vertical lines, then when you
restart
it, it does something different?
No
My iMac will run
fine on hours end when i consistantly use it at
one
time.
So does mine.
but then i go to sleep wake up to find that
it
takes me 10 or 11 times to turn it
on...wait...restart and finally get to the
homescreen. after that its peaches and cream.
You're lucky. It takes me more tries than that. When I said 50, I wasn't kidding. Maybe more than that.
a
buddy of mine told me that it could be the
permissions which repair can be made in the disk
utility. i've tried unplugging my computer for a
while then using it later (i moved 3 hours away
from
home with it next to my lap) and it only took
longer
to get it to the homescreen. i ran a hardware test
and everything is fine.
My computer has now been cleared by TechTool Pro, Disk Warrior, and the program that comes with the computer (Disk Utility?). Unfortunatley, my computer hasn't yet gotten the word, becauee it still doesn't want to start.
the usual advice online or
from mac is to reinstall OS X. it is a software
problem i beleive. i reinstalled OS X, but no
return.
im erasing my hard drive and starting over.
I try to avoid things like that. I don't have enough confidence in my abilities.
i've
lost
hope. by the way is this like anything you where
going through?
No, my problem is just as I've described. The only thing we have in common is that I have no problems during the day, but every morning is another battle.
Are you talking about an iMac G3 CRT?
Yes
You have an
iMac G5 listed as being your computer. Reason I'm
asking is because if you are talking about a G3 CRT
and if you installed OS X on it without updating the
firmware, you need to update the firmware REAL QUICK,
and do not, under any circumstances, reset the PRAM
until after you get the firmware updated.
I didn't trust myself to install the OS X, so I had it done by an Apple authorized computer repair shop. Of course, I've found that "Apple authorized" is no guarantee of good service. I could tell you some stories about one that you probably wouldn't believe. Fortunately for the unknowing public, they went out of business. Oh, as to the FIRMWARE, I checked on it anyway, and I do have the required version.
If you actually have an iMac G5, there is a separate
discussion area for that machine, so disregard the
firmware comment if that is the case.
Going through the starting process is a real pain in the neck, so I'm going to try to keep the computer "awake" tonight by giving it something to do. "Indexing" the Hard Drive seems to take forever, so I'm going to ask it to do that before I go to bed. Maybe that will keep it from shutting itself off.
Oh, one last thing, maybe the Apple Repair Manual would have your answers. Just be careful when you buy it on amazon or elsewhere that your're geting the right manual and that the seller is in America. I wasn't careful, so I now have to wait for it to be delivered from England. Also, it cost me about $17, whereas I'm told that it can be purchased for around $6.

  • Why won't my iMac start up after I put my password in. It just stops on the screen with the apple logo

I turned on my iMac today running Lion and typed in my password and it went to the gray screen with the apple logo and a little wheel spinning below it and won't go any further. Ive tried the Pram reset with cmd alt r p. no help. Ive tried a safe boot. No help. I've unpluged everything to it and unpluged the iMac itself. No help. One other thing I wanna try but I don't think I can is starting with the install cd. But oh wait, lion was a download only. So I don't have a disk. I have a snow leopard install disk. I put that in just so I can get to my disk utility.  When I got there I saw that my HD drive was not mounted and it wont let me repair it. I'm thinking this has to do with using the snow leopard cd. Maybe it will show mounted if I tried a lion cd that I don't have. Any ideas????

Please read Apple's Gray screen appears during startup, you have performed some of the troubleshooting steps however I'd recommend starting over from the beginning of the advice letter and following the instructions to the letter.

  • Why won't my iMac start up from install disk?

I get a gray screen, apple logo in the center with a spinning gear underneath it.  I have started my computer holding the c key, the option key selecting the install disk and startup disk in system preferences.  The iMac hangs every time.  The hard drive is in need of repair.
    thanks in advance

Funny you should mention that, as that happened a few months ago.  When it did, I could still start up from the install disk, there was just no destination for the software to be installed.  I am currently running the iMac off an external drive via firewire.  Disk utility informs me that disk is now in need of repair, even though it seems to be functioning fine, I can't start my machine from the install disk without it hanging up.

It powers up ,the apple comes on ,the grey circle starts spinning ,but that's it.

Two things, first see if it shows up in "Apple > About This Mac > More Info.. > Disc Burning" . If you still see it there the system still recognizes it but it isn't responding. Next do a
    SMC RESET

    Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and ALL peripherals.
    Wait 15 seconds.
    Attach the computers power cable.
Wait another 5 seconds and press the power button to turn on the computer.
The 5 second timing is important to a successful reset.
Hopefully this will reset the power to the drive.

Why won't my iMac recognise my LEVRO Ereader? It works fine with windows laptoip and the manual states it should work with 0S 10 and above.

Go to > Apple Computers: Troubleshooting the slot-loading SuperDrive and work thru the sections that pertain to the external superdrive.
Try cleaning it with a lens cleaning disc.
example > Memorex CD and DVD Lens Cleaning Kit: Electronics
If that doesn't help?  It is covered for 1 full year, so take it in for service or exchange.

When you say hit and miss do you mean sometimes you print a whole document with no problems, or do you mean each document has problems? This is from HP's website for your printer:
Your sig says 10.6.7 but your message says 10.7. So if it's really Lion, this printer isn't officially supported. Elsewhere on HP's site it says updated drivers will be available on your Mac via Software Update. Have you run that recently?

  • Why won't my iMac boot up?

I am at a complete loss as to why my iMac (17", 2007) won't boot up. After paying a small fortune (> $500 USD) to have the optical drive replaced (the Apple Authorised Service Provider thought that was the cause of the problems), I was able to start the computer (which had been wiped clean - I have Time Machine backups, so no matter) and then immediately tried to update the OS to Lion.
The download and subsequent installation took a couple of hours, and right at the end the system hung. I had no real alternative but to to restart by holding in the power button. The system booted and went past the grey login screen, but Finder would not start, so there was not much else I could do but restart manually again. This time, the system would not go past the grey startup screen with the Apple logo and the spinning dial.
The iMac is unresponsive to starting via:
    - holding either the C, S or R keys (in fact, I'm not even sure if there's a DVD/CD in the drive, as it won't eject or allow me to put a CD/DVD in)
    - zapping the PRAM
    - holding the Command button
The only way I can get past the grey screen is to hold the Option (Alt) button, which then allows me to choose the Macintosh HD or my external harddisk (with backup). I have run Disk Utility, and there are apparently no problems with my HD. The SuperDrive is greyed out, so it won't allow me to eject from here either.
I completed a restore of the system using the Time Machine and even chose an older backup (from the beginning of March), as I know my computer was running properly at this stage. At the end of the restore, I received a message indicating that the restore had been successful, and that the computer would need to restart....I crossed my fingers and hoped, but alas, I got the grey screen again. I let the dial spin for about 5-10 minutes, but then tried restarting manually again.
Does anyone have any suggestions which involve NOT having to take my computer back to the Service Provider (and imparting with a bundle of cash) again.
    Pretty please?

Restart holding Option and select Macintosh HD as you've done before.
When it's up, go to System Preferences > Startup Disk > select Macintosh HD > restart..
Should boot up correctly after that.

  • Why won't my iMac wake up?

I recently switched ISP's to a Mifi from Verizon, which I keep off when not in use because of data costs.  I've noticed that since I made the switch, my iMac won't wake up when I want to use it.  I need to unplug it, replug it, and start it up in order to use it.  Why is this happening?  Does it have something to do with the Mifi being off, which doesn't make sense to me.  I have an iMac 10.8.2.  Thank you.

Try doing a SMC and PRAM reset and then post back. You can find insturctions at https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3603
Also I'd recommend not putting the computer to sleep, only put the display to sleep.

  • Why won't my imac dvd drive accept disk?

My 21 inch iMac won't accept a dvd or cd. Is this a hardware or software issue, and what do I do?

Try these two things, the SMC reset will be most effective so follow that step closely.
    SMC Reset:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
    PRAM:
    i. Ensure the machine is powered off.
ii. Locate the following keys on your keyboard in preparation for Step 4:
    ‘command’ – ‘option’ – ‘P’ – ‘R’
iii. Press the ‘power on’ button.
iv. Immediately – and before the grey screen appears – hold down ‘command-option-P-R’ all together.
    v. Keep them held down until you’ve heard the start-up chime twice. After you release them you should hear it again, and hopefully your Mac will boot up normally.
