Why won't my ipod sync to new computer?

I recently used Itunes' "Home Share" feature to transfer my music from an old laptop to a new one. Unfortunately, I can not get my ipod to sync to my new laptop. Can anyone give me any suggestions as to how to get the ipod to sync to the new laptop?
Thanks!

Well they had to have come from somewhere because you download tracks directly from the iTunes Store to an iPod Classic.  They had to have been added to the iPod via the sync process or dragged to the iPod from another iTunes library.
As long as these tracks are still on your iPod and not on iTunes, you'll keep receiving this prompt from iTunes every time you connect it.  So you'll want to remove them from your iPod.
If I look at the info on the songs, they were all supposedly purchased on the date that I installed itunes on my new computer.
Does it also list your iTunes Apple ID as the account that was used to download these tracks?

  • Why won't my iPod sync with new, empty library?

Had some problems with my laptop and had to reformat hard disk. Stupidly, didn't back up iTunes library. All the songs are still on the iPod but I can't download them to iTunes. Error message says iPod cannot sync with this library becasue it is set up to sync with another library (I assume that's the one I erased). Is there any way to download the songs on my iPod into a library on my laptop? Thanks for any help you can provide.

Connect your iPod to your computer. When you get the message that it is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all the songs from your iPod. When your iPod appears in the iTunes source list change the update setting to manual, that will let you use our iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button. Also when using most of the utilities listed below your iPod needs to be enabled for disc use, changing to manual update will do this by default: Managing content manually on iPod
Once you are safely connected there are a few things you can do to restore your iTunes from the iPod. The transfer of content sources such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well. Have a look at the web pages and documentation, this is just a small selection of what's available, they are generally quite straightforward. You can read reviews and comparisons of some of them here:

If you have any iTunes Music Store purchases the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. You'll find details in this article: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod or iPhone to a computer
There's also a manual method of copying songs from your iPod to a Mac or PC. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available on page 2 at this link: Copying Content from your iPod to your Computer - The Definitive Guide
Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync. I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up, relying on an iPod as your sole backup is not a good idea and external drives are comparatively inexpensive these days, you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay.

  • Ipod syncing problem new computer

first I am not very familiar with ipods and itunes, but this if for my daughter.
Old computer crashed windows xp, bought new computer windows vista, downloaded itunes to new computer, connects to ipod and authorized new computer, WILL NOT SYNC, notice old computer has different version of itunes, and when connected to new computer it says "Upgrade software to ipod", Will this correct the problem?
Please help, I have been looking in this discussion forum for about 2 hours now and can't find any solution.
    Thanks

Whatever you do - DO NOT UPDATE THE IPOD FIRMWARE! Itunes has ruined my two iPods and I cannot restore them...Worked fine for two years and now nothing, all because of a simple firmware update. My best advice to you is to get rid of Windows Vista and put XP back on your system...Vista has major compatibility issues with any older hardware - I wiped it out and put XP back on, no problems with hardware, just my iPod is ruined.

  • ITunes / iPod Sync on new computer - HELP

I have recently bought a new computer and have reinstalled iTunes. I am trying to sync my iPod and although iTunes will read the tracks on my iPod, it will only retain them in there for as long as my iPod is connected. Also whilst my iPod is connected all the tracks are "greyed out" and so I cannot work with them.
How can I get the tracks to move across from my iPod and into my library?

    try a program called,"iPod agent".
this will allow you to move files from your iPod to your new computer.
    it's free to try

  • Why won't my ipod sync after restoring?

I recently had to restore my laptop so obviously i had to download Itunes again, but now my Ipod won't sync, it connects to the laptop and says preparing sync then it just seems to cancel itself, with no change to my ipod and no messages come up to say if there is any errors or problems.

You can only sync with one computer and the iPod see the computer as a new computer

If all the synced  media like apps and music are on the rebuilt computer then just backup the iPod and restore from that backup

I have only had my ipod for about 5 months and now it's not working properly. I have already downloaded the new verison of itunes to ssee if that was the problem but still nothing. When I try to sync it, it says it's syncing. Once my ipod screen is back to normal my pc says there is an unknown error that ocurred.

What is the exact wording of the error message?

  • Why won't my ipod sync with iTunes?

I have a first gen iPod Touch, running iOS5.1.1
When I connect to iTunes, it is recognized, and I can manually sync.  However even when syncing, no new music or photos move onto the iPod.  It just rattles through the sync stages & nothing changes
I used to think this was a memory issue, but I still have 1GB free space & I am not trying to add so much that it will completely fill (as far as I can tell)
    Any suggestions?
    thanks

1 GB of free space is not much.
You must have a 3G iPod since those can go to iOS 5.1.1. A 1G can only go to 3.1.3
    First verify your sync settings
iTunes: Syncing media content to iOS devices and iPod
Next backup and restore from backup via iTunes
Last, restore to factory settings/new iPod via iTunes
iOS: Back up and restore your iOS device with iCloud or iTunes

  • Why won't my iPod sync or charge?

As of yesterday, my iPod will on longer sync to iTunes, or even charge when it is plugged into my computer. I've gone through all of the trouble shooting options apple has (that means restarting computer and iPod, reinstalling iTunes, using a different cable, using a different usb port). I've plugged my iPod into a different computer, and it begins to sync. I've tried another iPod on my computer and it works as well. It seams to be that my iPod and computer will not work together. The iPod isn't even recognized in My Computer. Can anyone help?

had the same prob. i finally figured it out. ( for windows xp)
    1. if you use bitdefender or any antivirus ...turn it off !  (bitdefender) turn it off for 15 to 20 mins depending on how long you need to use the ipod.
    2. go to ''computer'' icon on your pc. right click and click ''properties''. go to ''hardware'' and to ''device manager''. plug in your ipod touch and go to ''universal serial bus controller' and wait to see if "apple mobile device usb driver' shows up. it should have a red 'X' on it. if not, plug it back in until it does. USE a GENUINE APPLE IPOD CABLE. if that doesnt work, make sure there are no ''yellow questions marks'" if so, uninstall it and plug ipod in PC again and go back to ''universal serial bus controller' and wait to see if "apple mobile device usb driver' shows up. if it does...
    3. click on the '"apple mobile device usb driver' a window should pop up saying this driver is ''disable''. click ''enable'' and then the driver should work find. you may hear a sound from your ipod, if it's needs charging the battery icon may appear or you'll see the lightning rod indicating it's charging.
    4. now that that is fixed..open up latest version of itunes...it will then pick up and let you start naming your ipod, ( if you've restored it) if you havent, it should work as it did before.
    5. IMPORTANT: you have to have ""apple mobile device support'' in your ''add and remove section'', to see if you do. go to ''control panel'' click ''add and remove'' look to see if ''apple mobile device support'' is there. if it's there; 1-4 should work ok.
if not uninstall itunes and reinstall it on your PC with the latest version. if you're using a 64 bit computer make sure you download the 64 bit version. the itune software has the ""apple mobile device support'' in the software.
hope this helps...worked for me and i have been trying to solve this for a WEEK. very hard to find the right info and hope this helps you

  • Why won't my iPod sync anymore?

My iPod touch 4g will not sync with my computer. My computer does not even recognize it, nor does any other computer. Also, my home button does not work but that is not a major issue. I have tried a hard reset but this did not even work. What can I do to get my iPod to sync with my computer again?

    - Inspect the dock connector on the iPod for bent or missing contacts, foreign material, corroded contacts, broken, missing or cracked plastic.
    - Try another cable
The below may erase the iPod and if you can't restore the iPod then you have a brick
    - Use this program to try to place the iPod in recovery mode and restore via iTunes

  • Computer crashed, ipod synced to new computer, purchased songs are gone.

My computer crashed. I used EphPod to download my ipod mini onto the new computer. It looked like all the songs were transfered so when I went to resync it in Itunes, I clicked "erase and resync". Then a window popped up saying that some songs wouldn't be transfered because the computer was authorized to play them. I clicked resync anyway since I have no way to deauthorize the computer that crashed. I thought EphPod had downloaded the purchased songs. It didn't. Is there any way I can retreve my purchased songs? Are they stored in my Itunes account or something?
    Thank you for your help.

The policy on lost purchases is that you have to pay to download them again:
"Once a Product is purchased and you receive the Product, it is your responsibility not to lose, destroy, or damage the Product, and Apple shall be without liability to you in the event of any loss, destruction, or damage."
You could try contacting the iTunes Music Store Customer Service and you might be able to persuade them to sanction a second free download. There have been occasional reports in the iTunes forum of this happening, however just be aware that they are not under any obligation to do so. If you click on any of the links on this page you'll find a space at the bottom to email your query: iTMS Customer Service
