Why won't my iPod won't power up?

I have either the original ipod or ipod2 and it worked fine until just a week or so ago. Now, it won't power up or charge. It's 8 years old.

Given that age, it's likely that the battery is completely shot at this point. You can have it replaced still by any number of third party services. You can also purchase a replacement battery and swap it out yourself if you'd like.

4th gen (40Gb). Never had any problems until last night. iPod had been fully charged from mains. Connected to PC expecting to tansfer around 40 tracks from recently ripped CDs. On connection was asked if I wanted to update iPod. I refused, fired up iTunes, was asked again, refused and then watched iTunes transfer nearly 2000 tracks! Thought I'd let it do its thing. Anyway, at the end of the process I disconnected but as soon as the iPod is undocked it powers off and will not wake. Placing it back in the dock and connecting to power (PC or mains) wakes it up. All the music appears to be there. My questions are:
1) Why the sudden massive download of tracks ?
2) Why won't it work when disconnected ?
3) How do I fix this (maybe run the updater) ?
It's almost as if the iPod is refusing to believe that it is charged ?

Me too as from today, just before I leave the country to travel and will depend upon the IPod to transfer photo's etc...
Anyway, 4th gen (40gb)... Works in dock, all music is there, but as soon as I remove it from the dock it turns off. The reset doesn't bring it to life (play+menu), only replacing it in the dock/connecting to mains...
Never had this before. Did upgrade to 3.1 (2005-10-12) a couple of days ago, wonder if it has any relevance?
So basically my IPod is pretty useless at the mo - HELP!

There are some complaints, that the 10W iPad wall charger does not charge iPod Classic, as it is too high power, Claasic need 1Amp max, but the iPad Charger gives 2 Amp.

IPod Won't Power Up

My iPod Nano is less than a year old. The battery's been holding its charge well. I've only had to charge it once every two or three weeks. Today I was listening to it in the car as usual, via my wireless car adapter. I took it off the adapter, and when I went to turn it off, I noticed it was already off. I tried to turn it back on. It wouldn't go back on. Before I had unplugged it, I noticed that the battery meter was about half full. I took it back inside and plugged it into my computer. Neither iTunes nor my computer will recognize it. And it still won't power on! I don't have an ac adapter for it, but I've never really needed one!
Does anybody know what could be wrong and how to fix it? It doesn't sound like the battery...

Thanks for those links; I performed a hard reset and that seems to have brought the iPod back to life, at least for now. I suspect that the battery is no longer holding any significant charge and needs to be replaced, which might be why it locked up in the first place.
So now I get to decide if this 1st gen iPod is worth the money to replace the battery, or if I should just finally buy a new one. (I definitely do not want one of those rumored touchscreen models, though, if they turn out to be reality... impossible to navigate by touch alone while driving, and I have no use for video on an iPod - I want to watch video BIGGER, not smaller!)

It says my computer isn't authorized to play that song so I type in my password and it pops up with a menu saying my computer is already authorized and it skips to the next song. No matter what I do it won't play that song on my laptop or my iPod.

Could be a Corrupt download of that song...

My kid just got an iPod 5th gen (today from Santa) and it won't power up or charge. The only response is when I connect the USB and press the power button or front button the Battery appears with red line and lightning symbol. No other response at all.

Why won't iTunes 11.0.1 sync my Podcasts to my 3rd Gen iPod Touch on IOS 6.0.1? I'm running iTunes on my MacBook with Mac OSX 10.6.8. I've checked to make sure in iTunes that the Podcast Sync box is checked and it is. I've tried checking communities and tried several suggestions and nothing seems to work for me. Everything else syncs except Podcasts. I can't figure it out. Any suggestions to get Podcasts syncing to my iPod Touch again? Thanks!

One other step I've tried was removing and completely reinstalling the playlist to the iPod. That cleared up the problem for about two days.

Look the dock connector on your iPod. Look for abnormalities like bent or corred contacts, foreign material and cracked/broken plastic.
Try:

my sons ran his ipod down so it had no power at all
i've since tried to recharge it for him but it won't charge
screen shows nothing/just black
tried plugging into wall socket and computer usb - no difference

See if you missed anything here:
- iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
- Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode

- If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
- Try another cable
- Try on another computer
- If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

It's every software company's answer to everything - upgrade to the latest version.
And for good reason, the bugs they know about get fixed, while introducing new ones. Not on purpose, of course, it just happens.

IPod screen illuminates but no image; iPod won't power off

iPod hard drive whirrs and screen illuminates, but no image (text or other) appears. iPod won't power off. iPod is recognized by iTunes only when in disk mode. Multiple restores were useless in restoring the screen function. Tools such as Disk Utility and Disk Warrior verified the directories were satisfactory. Can't locate a hardware diagnostic tool that can diagnose an iPod; and because the screen is malfunctioning, I can't run the iPod's built-in diagnostic routines.

If your iPod will not power off, unplug it from any power supply and wait for it to run the battery down completely. Then it will power off simply because there is not enough power to keep it running. (It may take 24 hours to do this.) Once this has happened, plug the iPod back into your computer. After about 30 minutes, you should see the "Please wait, very low battery" message. After a while longer, the iPod will have enough power and should reset itself. If not, re-post, but see below.
At the bottom of your post you state that you have a 30GB video iPod. In that case, if you need to re-post, it would be better in the 5th generation iPod forum, (either 5th generation or 5th gen late - see http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1353 for more information) as there will be posts from owners of the same model as you have, and with the same problems.
