Why won't my Mac Pro go to sleep any more?

I upgraded to yosemite I a few days later I noticed that my mac pro (3.1 early 2008 dual 2.8 xeon processors, two sad's one hdd, 14GB memory) doesn't go to sleep any more.  When I choose sleep from the Apple menu the displays go dark and it looks like it's sleeping, but the system is still humming along, as if a fan or an HDD is still spinning.  I can shut it down just fine, but would really like just to have it go to sleep like it used to.
I also recently added a PCIe USB 3.0/eSATA card for external connections (From OWC, compatible with my system).
Any known issues that would cause this?

Hi ..
Open System Preferences > Energy Saver then click:  Restore Defaults
Then select Sleep from the Apple  menu.
See if that makes a difference.
If not, reset the PRAM > OS X Yosemite: Reset your computer’s PRAM
BTW, if connected, external drives can prevent the Mac from going in to sleep mode.

Why won't my Mac Pro go to sleep?

    Hi X,
I've been having the same problem of mac pro not going to sleep. I think its to do with some universal audio drivers installed with a recent hardware interface I've added.
    the terminal app in response to above line reads;

  • Why won't my Mac Pro read a burnt copy of Photoshop CS5?

I just got myself a Mac Pro. From upgrading my old G4. My Mac Pro is a 2 Dual-Core Intel Xeon 2.66 ghz Version 10.6.8. With a SONY DVD RW DW-D150A Drive and a NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT graphics/display. So I have plenty of requirements to run CS5..I think. So anyways my friend let me barrow her copy of Photoshop which workered fine on her Macbook. When I tried it on my Mac the disk was read as a blank DVD?? As if nothing was written on the disk? I checked it and yes it is a written disk, so why won't it work? Any suggestions would help.
    Thanks.

Your friend is not allowed to share her copy of photoshop like that, but that's not related to your problem. You've burned the DVD wrong or your hardware is broken.

  • Why won't my Mac Pro 5,1 boot Snow Leopard?

My old Mac Pro 1,1 died.    I replaced it with a new Mac Pro 5,1.  (dual Westmere quad core)  Apple told me it would run Snow Leopard.  The new machine recognizes my old Snow Leopard hard drives as start-up disks but does not boot past the gray screen apple logo.   I was very good about keeping the operating systems up to date.   I am pretty sure that I have OS 10.6.8 installed...   I have two Snow Leopard disks that won't boot and a Leopard disk that also shows up as a start-up disk that does not boot either.  All stall at the gray screen Apple logo.
    What gives????
I am pretty disappointed.   I need Rosetta back!

    MacOSX: versions (builds) for computers
What this shows is that if you can build a verion of 10.6.8 using another Mac, starting from a "Full Retail" DVD (so that "drivers for every appropriate Mac" are included) it will boot the Mac Pro 5,1 from 2010. Users here have determined that, since the 2012 model uses the same firmware with no significant new hardware changes, it will actually boot that one as well.
Starting with a DVD that "shipped in  the box" with a different model Mac will not include the right drivers, even after update.

  • Why won't my Mac Pro wake up?

If I put my Mac Pro to sleep, it will not wake up normally. That is, tapping on the space bar, or moving the mouse, do not wake up the computer. I have to press on the power button for a few seconds, listen for the click. (so, manual shut down)  Then I press the power button again, and the computer starts up.
Also, shut down though computer prompts is not sufficient. I ALWAYS have to use manual shut down to be effective.
I've talked to apple support a lot, no solution. I brought my Mac Pro to the apple store today, they thought they'd identified the culprit: My wacom tablet.
At the store, with no Wacom tablet, the computer did wake up from sleep-- I think. It definitely started up normally after a computer prompted shut down. (I mean a shut down achieved with the command under the apple logo on the computer...
But when I brought the computer back home I had the same problem, even when it wasn't connected to my Wacom tablet.
Other thing:  If the computer is asleep and I un plug it, then plug it in again to power strip, it will wake up! So is it possible that I'm not getting enough juice coming into my computer?
Thanks, if anyone has any ideas I would be glad to hear them.

You need to plug the keyboard into a USB port on the chassis to have the Startup "snag keys" be recognized as well.
The USB ports on the keyboard only has enough power for ONE low power mouse. Do not plug anything else into those ports, not even a Flash Drive.
The mouse down/up scrolling default is the iPhone direction. You can change it with a checkbox in System Preferences > Mouse

  • Why won't my Macbook Pro go into sleep or screensaver mode?

For some reason my MacBook Pro stopped going into sleep or screensaver mode. I have always had my computer set on the most energy efficient settings. It used to go into sleep and screensaver mode just fine. I did not make any changes to my settings (and no one else has access to my computer) and now it just will not go to sleep by itself and it will not go into screensaver. The only light on my computer that still dims is the keyboard, it will dim when it is supposed to. Occasionally, my computer screen will randomly dim when it is supposed to, but then it will brighten again without me touching anything. Even more occasionally, it will go into sleep and screen saver mode, but this hardly ever happens. Can someone please tell me what is wrong?

You could check Activity Monitor and see if something is running in the background stopping it from going to sleep or having the screen saver come up.
That is what it sounds like. A program is keeping it from sleeping.

  • Why won't my MacBook Pro go to sleep when I close the lid?

All of a sudden, my MacBook Pro has stopped going to sleep when I close the lid. Instead, the indicator light on the front stays on steadily. When I then open the lid, I am asked to log in again, but before I can type anything, the window goes completely black. My only choice at this point has been to hold the power button down long enough to shut the laptop off. Then I wait a minute or so before restarting. Is there a setting I need to check to prevent all of this from happening? I have tried restarting in Safe Mode, then restarting normally, but still the laptop will not go to sleep when I close the lid.

Some process is impeding the sleep function. Since you've tried rebooting and it persists, check and see if Time Machine is hellbent on completing a backup, cause it can have that effect.

  • Why won't my MacBook Pro go to sleep?

Since my last software update my MacBook Pro will not go to sleep.  When I close the MacBook or if I initiate the sleep mode through the menu I just tries and then wakes back up.  If I clos the MacBook it just keep starting and stopping over and over until I open it again.  Ideas?

  • Why won't my macbook pro wake from sleep?

My MacBook Pro 13" is awesome.  What is not awesome is that I can't wake it from sleep sometimes.  I have tried pressing keys, trackpad and power button with no success.  When I restart, I get the login screen and it will immediatly go to sleep or it will let me type in the password and then go to sleep.  What is going on here.  I thought that Lion would fix this, but it did not.  Anyone have any suggestions?

Everything seems okay with my computer.  It did not want to wake up 1 time since my last post.  I closed the laptop, let it sit for a few minutes and when I opened it back up it woke up and was fine.  The only thing I can figure is there is something that happens after the laptop has been charging for awhile.  It seems that everytime the computer didn't want to wake from sleep, it had been charging the battery or had just finished charging.  Weird thing to happen.  If you have this problem happen to you, try the steps mentioned earlier in this post (the answer from tjk) will probably fix it.

i cleared my cookies on 10/08/10 and since then firefox won't store cookies for longer than a browser session. i have checked my settings and nothing has changed. the box for accept cookies is checked, as is the box for accept third party cookies. cookies are accepted until they expire.
no changes have been made to add-ons or extensions. no changes have been made to my os. i disabled java quickstarter and console because firefox was hanging around in the background even after the browser was closed (and it was annoying and sucking up ram).
i can't figure out why firefox is hating on the cookies all of a sudden. any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • Why won't my Mac recognize Verbatim Dual Layer blank DVDs?

Why won't my Mac recognize Verbatim Dual Layer blank DVDs?
I've just completed a 140 minute project in FCP. I've encoded an MPEG2 file that is 5.75GB in size. Brought into DVDSP and am trying to burn the DVD.
I have Final Cut Studio 1, latest updates and everything.
Because of the 5.75GB size I need to burn to Dual Layer DVD. I have Verbatim 4x 8.56GB dual layer DVDs.
When I click buld/burn and pop in a dual layer DVD I get an error saying "please insert compatible disc".
Even with every app closed. If I put one of these DVDs in my Mac it simply spits it out after about 20 seconds.
For some reason the Mac won't handle or understand these Dual Layer DVDs.
I bought this Mac Pro about 4 months ago and it is the 2 x 2.66Ghz Dual Core Intel Xeon machine and the DVD drive (according to system profiler) is a Pioneer DVD-RW DVD-111D. In system profiler it says "Pioneer DVD-RW DVD-111D"
Can anyone tell me if this DVD player is actually capable of dual layer, or do I need to buy one.
In System Profiler under Revision it says: AB09 and under Protocol it says: ATAPI
    Can anyone advise please?

If you have access to a pc into which you can install the 112, or if you have bootcamp, you can replace the Apple supplied firmware with Pioneer firmware. This should restore full functionality to the drive. The latest Pioneer firmware for the drive is version 1.21 and can be found here: http://www.cdrinfo.com/Sections/Firmware/SingleModel.aspx?DriveId=1426
