Why won't my messages sync on both my iphone and ipad?

Since I've installed the latest software update for my iphone 4 and ipad 3 my messages are not syncing with both devices.  Today for example I had a message sent to me at 2pm that went to my ipad (which was at home) instead of my phone.
Does anyone know how to fix this? I have the same email address and contact number set up for both........

I found a solution that worked for me. I had this same problem and I feel like I tried everything. No matter how many time I synced, the songs appeared to be on my phone, but they would just get skipped over if I tried to play them ("ghost" songs). The answer is not checking and unchecking artists/playlists/etc in iTunes. The phone still thinks the songs are there so it won't sync them to the phone. Here's what to do: go to Settings --> Music and then make sure "Show All Music" is off. Then go to the Music app and try to play through your songs. Now, when a song is skipped over it should no longer appear in the iPhone's library. Once all songs are skipped (could take a few minutes depending on the size of your library), the "ghost" songs will disappear. On the next sync iTunes will put them all back on the phone.     You need to reconfigure your phone for use with your Apple ID. I suggest you restore yours as new then reconfigure it with your information and Apple ID. Be sure to disable Find My Phone, if it's enabled, before proceeding.

    You will need to restore your device as New to remove a Restrictions passcode. Go through the normal process to restore your device, but when you see the options to restore as New or from a backup, be sure to choose New.
    You can restore from a backup if you have one from BEFORE you set the restrictions passcode.

    This happens to me all the time.
    If is a one page PDF it seems as though it comes over already open and inline in the body of the email. Multiple page PDF files show as the PDF icon.
    I can't find any official documentation of this - other than based on my own experience with PDF attachments in my various email accounts.

    In the past 4 weeks I started experiencing this issue: some of the messages I send from my iphone and ipad will NOT show in Messages Beta for Mac OSX. Likewise, some of the messages received on my iphone and ipad often don't show on my Messages Beta.

    The best I have on this at the moment is that the Messages App is still Beta.
    Secondly there have been some changes to the way the iMessages parts are syncing.
    This may be due to Apple making changes to the iMessages server and the resultant sync issue to do with that.
    Of course in the change over, if my guess is right, some messages may have been lost.
    Some of this seems to be altering the  way Messages get Flagged as to whether they were delivered or not.

  • I have both my iPhone and iPad backing up via iCloud, but they are not sharing the information between devices ie if I purchase an app on one it does not transfer to the other although the backup is successful via iCloud.

    Backing up to icloud is not the same as syncing data between devices.  Go to
    Settings>Store.  Turn on the automatic downloads that you want on that screen.
    Settings>iCloud.  Turn on the features you want to sync between devices.

    You have to go to Settings>iCloud and tap Delete Account, then sign back in with your updated credentials.  This deletes the account and your synced data from your device, but not from iCloud.  Provided you are signing back into the same account and not changing to a different account, your data will be synced back to your device when you sign back in.

    If you do not want to use passcodes, why don't you just go to Settings > General > Passcode Lock and delete the passcode and set the lock to OFF.  That will eliminate the problems all together.

    Messages requires Mountain Lion (10.8), or higher. The beta version for Lion expired almost a year ago.
    Lion still uses iChat.

    I have just been on the phone to Apple for over 2 hours ! Both devices were already on IMAP . It turned out that one particular folder was a rogue and did not sync between desktop, iPhone and iPad. I created a new folder dragged every email into it from my desk top , deleted the original folder and all emails in that folder are now synched. Even Apple was baffled but the problem is now resolved so thank you for your assistance .

    For what it's worth, you posted this in 2011, and here in 2014 I am still having this same issue. Over the last two days, I have had to unlock my apple account 8 times. I didn't get any new devices. I haven't initiated a password reset. I didn't forget my password. I set up two factor authentication and have been able to do the unlocking with the key and using a code sent to one of my devices. 
    That all works.
    It's this having to unlock my account every time I go to use any of my devices. And I have many: iMac, iPad, iPad2, iPad mini, iPhone 5s, iPod touch (daughter), and my old iPhone 4 being used as an ipod touch now.  They are all synced, and all was working just fine.
    I have initiated an incident with Apple (again) but I know they are just going to suggest I change my Apple ID. It's a simple one, and one that I am sure others think is theirs. I don't want to change it. I shouldn't have to. Apple should be able to tell me who is trying to use it, or at least from where.

    I sync both my iPhone and iPad through iTunes on my desktop. The way they sync is that iPad apps only go to the iPad, but iPhone apps go to both. I would like to sync iPad apps to the iPad and some, but not all, iPhone apps. Is there a way to sync different apps to each device?

    It sounds like you activate/synced your iPad on another computer already. An iPad (and other devices) can only be synced to one computer. Therefore, if you since to your computer you will lose all your apps, and more importantly, all the information associated with those apps. You can get the apps back by just re-downloading them. You will not be charged again as long as you use the same iTunes account you used the first time.
