Why won't my old iPod (4th gen) sync with iTunes 11.1.5?

My 40GB 4th generation iPod won't sync automatically or manually when I connect it (via iPod dock) to my Mac Mini running OSX 10.8.5 and iTunes 11.1.5.
The iPod shows up in the iTunes side bar, but that's the extent of the interaction between the two. Even dragging selected songs to playlists in the sidebar won't work. Is this just an age-related incompatability issue for which there's no fix, or is there a solution? Thanks.

If those options are grayed out, that probably means the Sync Music checkbox on the iPod's Music screen is not checked.  Then, your iPod is set to sync manually.  Check the iPod's Summary screen in iTunes to see if Manually manage music is checked.  If it is, the iPod is maintained manually, NOT automatically when it is connect or when you click the Sync button.
I wanted to select the latter so that just the songs I checked off in my iTunes library (those added since the last time I synced the iPod) were copied over.
Automatic syncing does not work that way.  When you set up the iPod's Music screen (and Apply), it syncs based on what you select on that screen (the songs that are part of the selected playlists, artists, albums and/or genres).  It does not add songs to what is already on the iPod, based on what is checked or not check in your iTunes library.
If you want to add songs to what is already on the iPod, and the iPod is currently set to Manually manage music, this is how to add (and remove) songs.
To Add songs manually...  Show a list of songs in the iTunes window.  For example, you can click on Music under LIBRARY to show your main iTunes music library list.  Select a song that you want on the iPod, and drag it to the iPod in the sidebar.  You can select more than one song at a time when you do this.  Alternately, select the song(s), right-click on the selection, and choose the command to Add to Playlist -> [name of your iPod].
To Remove songs manually...  In the sidebar, click on the small triangle to the LEFT of the iPod's name, to drop down the iPod's content list, indented below the iPod.  Click on Music there.  To the right, the iPod's song list is shown.  Select the song you want to remove from the iPod, and press Delete on the keyboard.  You can do this with more than one song selected.
There's nothing on the iPod that's not currently in my iTunes library, but I'd prefer not having to do a complete resync.
So, if you want to set up automatic syncing, you can check the box for Sync Music on the iPod's Music screen.  If 40GB is enough to hold your entire iTunes music library, you can choose to sync Entire music library.  Then, "everything" (that is music) syncs to the iPod.  Going forward, any changes to your iTunes music library automatically syncs to the iPod (the next time it is connected or you click Sync if already connected).
Otherwise, you can choose to sync Selected playlists, artists, albums, and genres.  A good way to set this up is to create new playlists in your iTunes library with ALL (and only) the songs you want on the iPod (or you can use existing playlists).  Back on the iPod Music screen, select those playlists under Playlists.  Going forward, to update the iPod, just update those playlists (add/remove songs) in your iTunes library.  So, if you have new songs, add them to one of those playlists.  iTunes automatically updates the iPod with the same changes (the next time it is connected or you click Sync if already connected).
When you click Apply, the existing content on the iPod is replaced by the content selected on the iPod's Music screen.  Going forward, iTunes is responsible for automatically keeping the iPod "in sync" with your iTunes library, based on now the iPod's Music screen is set up.
To me, setting up and using automatic syncing is the most convenient and elegant way.

    Restart your Mac.
Mac OS X v10.6.8 or earlier only: Reinstall the Apple Mobile Device Service.

In rare circumstances, your device may be recognized after reinstalling iTunes, but after you restart your Mac, the device may not be recognized again. If this happens, and you are using Mac OS X v10.6 (Snow Leopard), please follow the steps in this article.

  • IPod (2nd Gen) syncing with iTunes 11

On iTunes 11, the songs on my iPod (2nd Gen) playlist are greyed out and I would like to be able to add and remove them. I have read through the discussions and they all point to changing things under the summary button, of which I don't seem to have one.  When I click on my device on the sidebar, the only tab underneath it is Genius.  The only tabs on top are Settings and On This iPod (of which all the songs are greyed out) and Autofill is on. There is no option under Settings to turn Autofill off. I've read how I need to change my settings from Autofill to Manual but can't seem to locate a 'Summary' button anywhere to do so.  Please help!

I am having this same problem. Did you ever resolve the issue and how? I feel really goofy not being able to figure this thing out. Crazy.

  • IPod doesn't sync with iTunes anymore!! HELP!!

I am in complete despair - my iPod doesn't sync with iTunes anymore. It all started a couple of days ago, after installing the latest updates of both, iTunes and iPod. After that, I noticed that the iPod wasn't synching the changes and new additions I had made in iTunes.
I tried everything so far with no success. I did reset the iPOd, reinstalled the iPod updater, than did a RESTORE and now my iPod is completely empty, but refuses to download my music from iTunes.
When connected, it shows up, start "updating iPod" and several seconds later shows "update complete". In the iPod window I can all the songs (in grey) from my library, but they are not being transferred to my iPod!!!
    Please, help!!

I think I know the problem and it's solution. The iPod "thinks" it's linked to a different library and therefore does not synchronize. No idea what happens in the background there, but here is what I did:
First, I went back to the previous update on the iPod (not sure if that's necessary at all, but I just wanted to go to where I started from.
The UNinstalled iTunes (to be safe I backed up my tunes) and reinstalled it. Then pasted backed up tunes into new iTunes music folder and overwrote newly created iTunes library files.
Then I connected the iPod, which now told me that I had an old version and needed to update, which I did.
Then a window popped up and told me that my iPod was connected to a different library and if I want to connect to this one, overwriting everything on the iPod, which I said yes to (it didn't matter anyway, since it was now empty after the RESTORE I had done).
iPod then downloaded all the songs from my library again and we are as happy together as we've been before
I think what happened was that after installing the latest update, that window with the "different library connection" had popped up as well and I must have clicked NO because of the "overwrite" comment which scared me. Unfortunately, even with "reset warnings" it then never popped up again and until I reinstalled iTunes.
    Hope this helps!

    thanks for the help
As I said, you won't hurt a lithium-ion battery by not fully charging it prior to use.  These batteries don't have a "memory" like older nickel cadmium batteries do so it doesn't compromise it's ability to fully charge by using it with only a partial charge.  You also can't overcharge it; your charger will go into "trickle" charge mode once it reaches about 95% charge and remain that way.  If you want to wait to use it, charge it overnight.  If you don't, just charge it for a couple of hours, the fully charge it once you don't need to use it for a while.

  • IPod 4th Gen problem with MMJ

Can anyone help me out, i am trying to connect my iPod 4th Gen with MMJ ver. 9. Unfortuantly the old plugin does not work.
I have always been a great Apple fan but i find it hard to believe that Apple would sacrifice is customers happiness with it's race to win the competition between iTunes for Windows and Musicmatch Jukebox.
iTunes is a great program but it's it is severally lacking in regards to it's "Smart Playlist" which is a very very small compare-sent to the "AutoDJ" function in MMJ.
Can anyone let me know if there is a plugin out there that would connect both together easily. I currently have to use Anapod Explorer to connect my iPod to MMJ.

    Hi Blue Ocean Girl,
Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.
If the sleep/wake button is not working on your iPod nano, I suggest trying to restore it using iTunes. If the button still doesn't work after restoring, then you have isolated the problem to the iPod hardware itself.
See this article for the steps to restore an iPod:

  • Why won't all of my smart playlists sync from itunes to my ipad?

Why won't all of my smart playlists sync? They show up in the playlist screen of my ipad music app. When I click on the playlist, there are no songs listed. I sync it again, and the playlist now shows zero songs in the list. I keep trying to sync it, and it goes back and forth from showing there are 60 songs in the playlist, which I can't play, to showing zero songs. Please help.

Yes, sorry, you are correct, it was iTunes Match. I purchased storage on iTunes Match (probably a bad idea), because I had over 1000 songs on my i-phone 4S -which is eating up my storage space. Well, anyway...After I purchased it, I followed the instructions: go to: Settings, "open" music, "Turn on" iTunes Match. After I did that, I opened up the Music App -on my phone -ALL of my playlists were gone and only 208 songs showed... I messed up my phone once before and I had to log into my i-Tunes account (on my computer) and "reset" to another date. I would like to do that again -if possible...
    Please help!
