Why Won't my Raw files from my Nikon D5300 open in CS4?

I recently got a new Nikon D5300 and shot in raw for the first time today.  When I tried to view the images with photoshop CS4, a pop up window appeared stating that photoshop does not recognize that type of file, and therefore cannot be opened. Is this a compatibility issue of photoshop vs. camera files or something else?  As a portrait photographer I shoot in RAW 90% of the time so I'm very desperate to get this resolved.

Yes, it's the never-ending struggle of software keeping up with hardware (cameras) and the eternal compatibility issues between them. Forces users into a never ending upgrade cycle to keep up.
Camera manufacturers use proprietary Raw files which are specific to each and every camera they make. Every camera is different. So Adobe has to retrospectively add support to the Adobe Camera Raw (ACR) plugin for each Raw file format on a camera by camera basis after the camera has been released to market.
The D5300 was first supported in Camera Raw 8.3
Camera Raw plug-in | Supported cameras
ACR8.3 is compatible with CS6 and newer. It is not compatible with CS4 and never will be.

  • How can I get Elements 12 to load raw files from my Nikon D5300. I have installed DNG Conv. 8.7.1

I cannot get Elements 12 to recognise and load NEF files from my Nikon D5300. I have downloaded and installed the latest DNG coverter software 8.7.1 but Elements still refuses to load any NEF files.
    regards Ian.

    Hi,
You shouldn't need to use the DNG converter unless you are using the MAC app version. The D5300 should be supported by Camera Raw 8.3 which should be compatible with Photoshop Elements 12.
In the editor go to Help -> About Plug-in -> Camera Raw to see which version you have loaded. The latest for Photoshop Elements 12 is 8.5. If you have an older one then go to the Help menu and select Updates.
If you are up to date, then you may have use old Nikon software to access the NEF files and that is known to corrupt them so that Photoshop Elements can't read them.

  • Why won't the raw files from my new Nikon D810 open in ACR?

I just shot a newborn session on my brand new Nikon D810 and my RAW files will not open in ACR or CC or PSE. Everything is up to date. This is my first time using the new camera and the photos are for a paying client. Am I screwed until the new ACR updates are released? Or is there some magic fix until then? I'm panicking!

Every new camera comes with its own specific Raw file format and Adobe must add support to Camera Raw for each individual camera released on the market. There's often a time lag between the camera shipping and Raw support being added to Camera Raw.
Lots of D810s are now in circulation (dozens of D810 Raw support requests have popped up in these forums recently) and Raw support from Adobe is imminent but not yet final.
D810 support has just been added to the yet-to-be-released Camera Raw 8.6.
Adobe has made the Release Candidate version (a kind of post-beta, pre release) available for further testing prior to final release.
Download Adobe Photoshop Camera Raw 8.6 Beta - Adobe Labs
Install manually but use at your own risk until final release.

  • Why is my raw files from my Nikon D5300 completely overexposed in Apertue 3 but ok in View NX 2? Do I just have to wait for an update/patch from Apple?

Can anyone answer the above question?
    Thank you.

Are you shooting RAW and using in-camera settings, like Active delighting in your Nikon? Then the RAW files will appear in Aperture very different from the JPEG previews that your camera is showing you, and also from the results in Nikon's own software.
Don't use in-camera setting, if you are shooting RAW, because Aperture will show you the naked RAW file, without any effects applied.
See Keith Barkley's user tip for a full explanation:

Just in case, that your images are not only overexposed but also desaturated , have a look at this thread:

  • NEF RAW files from my Nikon D5300 will not open in Photoshop CS3

Is there a plug-in or update I can download that will make it possible for my Photoshop CS3 to open NEF files in RAW.
I noticed a similar discussion a couple of years ago and I followed the advice and as far as I can tell I have the most up-to-date version of my software, and the Camera Raw plug-in is Version 4.6.0.30
I also have the same problem using CS5. Both versions say they cannot recognize the file type. Can I use a converter to make them a different kind of RAW file, but still a RAW format? I would prefer to simply be able to open them in Photoshop for editing.
Any help is greatly appreciated! Thanks.
    Barb

I just checked the compatibility list again, and the D5300 requires Camera Raw 8.3 (Not 7.3) or Lightroom 5.3. You have Lightroom 5, but what exact version of Lightroom 5 do you have? It might require that you update your Camera Raw and your Lightroom in order to have support in both Photoshop and Lightroom.
You can check your version of Camera Raw by going to the help menu in Photoshop, then about plug-ins and then Camera Raw. The dialog that appears will indicate what version of Camera Raw you have installed. It should not be necessary for you to use the DNG converter unless you feel compelled to.

  • Photoshop CS5.1 won't read raw files from Canon EOS M

Photoshop cs5.1 won't read raw files from canon eosM, what to do?

The EOS M requires at least Camera Raw 7.2 but Raw 7.2 is only compatible with CS6 or higher (CS5 is only compatible up to Raw 6.7)
    http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-suite/kb/camera-raw-plug-supported-cameras.html
To open and edit Raw files, either upgrade to CS6 or join the Cloud and get the CC version.
Alternatively convert the Raw files from the EOS M to DNGs using the free DNG converter then edit the DNGs in CS5.1

  • Why can't I open my RAW files from my Nikon D7000 ?? I can open RAW files from my old Nikon D70's but not my D7000...

I can't open my RAW files from my Nikon D7000 on Elements 7. The files from my old Nikon D70s open but not my D7000... Any Idea why?

Not sure what your version of PSE is but if it is PSE13 then you may need to update your product by going to
    Help >> Updates
This ensures you get the latest updates to support all known cameras in the market.
Old products may not have the latest updates so you need to use DNG converter for which there is a wonderful video that is self explanatory:
    Hope this helps.

  • Can anyone offer info on why/how to upload raw files from Nikon D610 to latest version of aperture?

I just upgraded to the latest operating system AND Aperture software program so I could import raw files from the Nikon D610, but the files are still being imported as unsupported image format.  Is there a setting that I need to set to get this to work?  I can't believe I spent all day upgrading the operating system and then my old version of Aperture, only to find out it still won't support the raw files from my new camera.  Anyone else having this problem?

  • Lightroom 5 won't import RAW files from Nikon D7000

Since the last two updates of Lightroom 5 I cannot import any RAW files from a Nikon D7000. I have imported thousands of photos previously in RAW from the same camera, and even iPhoto has no issues importing them. I just get an error every time, even though it shows a preview of the photos on the card.

  • Will Photoshop Elements 11 and Lightroom 4 support conversation of RAW files from a Nikon D800?

I'm currently using Photoshop Elements 9 and must convert RAW files from my Nikon D800 to .dng files before processing using a added converted.  I'm considering upgrading to either Elements 11 or Lightroom 4 but want to know if either of these programs will support the nikon D800 RAW files without having to go through this extra cumbersome step.   Additionally, if I do go with Lightroom 4, will the transition be easy or difficult and what problems might I encounter?

Yes the D800 is fully supported in both applications.
You would certainly benefit in processing your 36mp raw files using Lightroom if you have a 64bit PC or Mac with additional memory (RAM). The Lightroom develop module is where you do all the editing and you get the benefit of the full CS6 raw engine in an intuitive interface.
If you regularly use the Elements Organizer you should understand Lightroom quite easily.
Why not download the free trial of LR4 and test for 30 days.
