Why won't my SSD work?
Hey everyone, sorry for the long post but I wanted to make sure I didn't leave out any details. Thanks in advance!
Last week, my Mid-2012 13" i7 MBP suddenly started to freeze, boot slow, and began to click (or so I thought, I'm paranoid). Not unfamiliar with a drive failure, I replaced the drive with a working 7 year old 200GB Seagate drive. I restored from my Time Machine backup and all was well. In an effort to not have to deal with hard drive issues for the remainder of my Mac's life, I purchased a 500GB Samsung 840 EVO.
Upon installation, I formatted the drive to JHFS+ and tried a fresh install of Mavericks via USB stick which failed (and I failed to check the log, yay). I replaced the Seagate drive, remade the stick, and tried the install again. Multiple attempts at formatting (including trying to use Terminal: diskutil) all fail alternating between two errors: "File system formatter failed" and "Wiping volume data to prevent future accidental probing failed". Also, trying to perform a disk erase using terminal returns a "POSIX I/O Error". The drive also fails to format when booted into Internet Recovery. An Apple Hardware Test returns a "4HDD/11/40000004: SATA (0,0)" error.
Using the USB stick, I tried installing Mavericks to the SSD with an external USB 2.0 to SATA enclosure where it performed at USB2 speeds, but flawlessly. As soon as I installed the SSD with Mavericks into the MBP, it failed to boot.
I was about to RMA the SSD until I put it in my 6-year old HP, formatted it, and it installed Windows 7 where it functioned quickly and flawlessly.
The only thing keeping me from purchasing a new SATA cable is the fact that I'm typing this right now with no issue from a 7 year old 200GB Seagate drive. Also, I'm about tired of dumping money into an already expensive laptop. I would travel to an Apple store for service but the nearest one is over 1.5 hours away.
I've updated the firmware of the SSD to the latest available, reset PRAM/SMC, reseated the SATA cable at least 7 times, and considered throwing this thing in the trash at least 42 times.
13 frustrating hours later and I'm still left with a half-functional Macbook 3 weeks out of warranty. Any help is greatly appreciated and thanks again...
Alright, just for kicks I installed the factory (and what I thought to be dead) drive in my external USB enclosure, booted off of it, and lo and behold everything is functioning fine. More and more this situation is leaning towards the internals of my MBP and I guess the SATA cable...
Now, three questions... First, what would make the SATA cable of a year old MBP that has NEVER been opened suddenly fail? Second, why is a 7 year old Seagate drive the only drive that seems to function properly in the internal SATA slot? Third, isn't it more likely that it's the SATA cable and NOT the SATA controller?
The entire reason I bring up the SATA controller is the fact that when the factory drive was "failing" it simply would freeze. I was originally thinking hard drive failure because of the sounds it was making. These Toshiba drives have completely different sounds than the Western Digitals/Seagates I see fail in PCs I work on. The drive is making the same noises it was when it was in my MBP (yet working 100% in the USB enclosure) so I assume it is working normally.

Why won't my iMessage work with only one contact in my phone all my other iMessages send and they just got an iphone but all their iMessages are sending also. I've tried restarting my phone, deleting messages, contact, restarting network
Hello Jesslb23,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
For more information on this, take a look at:
iOS: Troubleshooting Messages
http://support.apple.com/kb/ts2755
To resolve issues with sending and receiving iMessages, follow these steps first
Check iMessage system status for current service issues.
Go to Settings > Messages > Send & Receive and make sure that you have registered iMessage with your phone number or Apple ID and that you have selected iMessage for use. Learn more about troubleshooting iMessage registration if the phone number or Apple ID isn't available for use.
Open Safari and navigate to www.apple.com to verify data connectivity. Learn more about troubleshootingcellular data or a Wi-Fi connection if a data connection isn't available.
iMessage over cellular data might not be available while on a call. Only 3G and faster GSM networks support simultaneous data and voice calls. Learn more about which network your phone supports. Go to Settings > Wi-Fi and turn Wi-Fi on to use iMessage while on a call if your network doesn't support simultaneous data and voice calls.
Restart your device.
Tap Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings on your iPhone.
If you are still unable to send or receive an iMessage, follow these steps
Make sure that the contact trying to message you isn't blocked in Settings > Messages > Blocked.
Verify that the contact you are attempting to send a message to is registered with iMessage.
If the issue occurs with a specific contact or contacts, back up or forward important messages and delete your current messaging threads with the contact. Create a new message to the contact and try again.
If the issue occurs with a specific contact or contacts, delete and re-create the contact in the Contacts application. Create a new message to the newly created contact and try again.
Back up and restore your device as new.
Best of luck,

Why won't podcast app work on iPhone 5 after ios 8.1.3 update?
I've restarted the phone and itunes several times, have uninstalled and reinstalled the app on the phone and itunes separately, and it still just shows 'Installing" under the greyed out app.I have the same problem with an iPhone 5s. All podcast fail to work on the phone since updating to iOS 8.1.3. What is going on? Is Apple taking this problem serious?

Why won't my camera work in Facebook video call?
Have a new MacBook Pro running Mavericks. When I tried to use the video call feature in Facebook, it told me I didn;t have the necessary java to execute the install. I downloaded the file suggested online (Java for OS X 2014-001: How to re-enable the Apple-provided Java SE 6 web plug-in and Web Start features) and the install went through. However, when I try to make a call it connects, I can see the other person's video and hear her/him but my camera does not activate (No green light. Person being called can hear me, but no picture appears for them). FaceTime works fine. Skype works fine. Google+ Hangout asks me to give permission to use camera, but hangs up. I also tried to make a FB video call in Safari and that did not work either (same problem).

Because something is wrong.
You've done well determining that there is nothing wrong with your Mac or its Apple Software.

Why won't quicktime player work? I own Mac Book Pro with Retina Display and connote get the quicktime player to open or play quicktime movies?
Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J. When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder. Select Preferences/com.apple.quicktimeplayer.plist. Move the .plist to your desktop.
Open the application and test. If it works okay, delete the plist from the desktop.
If the application is the same, return the .plist to where you got it from, overwriting the newer one.
Thanks to leonie for some information contained in this.
You might need to redo the View settings after an update. -
I am trying to use Find My Friends and I have been through troubleshooting 3 times. Why won't my location work? Everything is on but the 2nd screen in Find My Friends is grayed out, whereas my other family members 2nd screens are active? I have an iPhone 6 Plus, latest ios8, and yes my location says it is being shared, but it is not.
Pyralus wrote:
I decided to try and boot from the Tiger discs, but when I did, all I got was a screen that looked like a blizzard of pixels.
The firmware was likely changed and it's not compatible anymore or the disk is bad.
I was able to boot using the Snow Leopard disc from both my new MBP and my girlfriends MB, but both said that OS X could not be installed on this computer, and I couldn't even use the disc utility to wipe the drive.
Those disks don't have the hardware drivers your machine needs.
Your going to need to get a Snow Leopard retail install disk from Amazon/elsewhere.
Do I need to have a serial number to reinstall OS X?
Thankfully No. -

Why won't my pandora work when I'm not on wifi? I have the cellular data on for it but I never works. Also pandora isn't the only app of mine that does that.. What's wrong with it??
You're welcome.
Voicemail is left at your carrier's server. That will continue to work unless you report your iPhone as lost or stolen with your carrier.
You may never find it again and you can't if the iPhone remains offline or out of service which means the iPhone is powered off or doesn't have cellular reception. -
Why won't my iphone work in any of my docking stations
Possibly they are not designed to work with iPhones.
Possibly there is no physical connection or way to connect them.
Possibly the docking stations are broken.
Possibly the device is damaged.
Without more details of the problem, it's difficult at the least to offer an answer or a possible resolution. -
Why won't my sound work on videos in facebook on my iPad2?
Why won't my sound work on my iPad when I try to hear videos on facebook? Oddly it works if I plug in headphones but it's hit and miss for videos. I tried making sure the lock switch is set to volume and the volume is turned up.
Try a reset:
Hold the Sleep and Home button down for about 10 second until you see the Apple logo. -
