Why won't my sweet new MacBook connect to the internet?

Newbie here, and I'm sure y'all are sick of this question.
Opened up new 13" MacBook last night, and it won't connect to our wireless (through Comcast cable modem) internet. We have a Linksys router (BEFW11S4) that two other pc's are connected too, and they are connecting fine. Also, our Wii is connecting fine as well to the internet.
When I was setting up the new Mac last night, it does show 'linksys' as available, but it won't connect. We reset the router, and still nothing.
Any advice so I can stop crying?

Use System Preferences: Network: Show Network Port Configurations, there should be a setting where you can enable and disable individual Network Ports. Make sure that all the ports are disabled, except for Airport, the MacBook might be trying to connect to Ethernet via another port and not using Airport, even though it appears to be connected to linksys.
OS X 10.5 Leopard is organized a little different from OS X 10.4 Tiger, but you should be able to find the place in that System Preferences screen where you can display and change the Network Port Configurations.
You might possibly need to check the wireless router configuration to see how many IP addresses it can assign or if there are some other connection restrictions enabled on the router, for more info see the User Guide

  • I-Tunes won't open unless I'm connected to the internet

I am a relatively new user to I-Tunes; when I try to open I-Tunes to play a CD or other files in my library, I-Tunes won't open unless I am connected to the Internet. Is this normal?

    Close your iTunes,
    Go to command Prompt -
(Win 7/Vista) - START/ALL PROGRAMS/ACCESSORIES, right mouse click "Command Prompt", choose "Run as Administrator".
    (Win XP SP2 n above) - START/ALL PROGRAMS/ACCESSORIES/Command Prompt
In the "Command Prompt" screen, type in
    netsh winsock reset
    Hit "ENTER" key
    Restart your computer.
If you do get a prompt after restart windows to remap LSP, just click NO.
Now launch your iTunes and see if it is working now.
If you are still having these type of problems after trying the winsock reset, refer to this article to identify which software in your system is inserting LSP:

  • MacBook connected to the Internet but won't load

I connected my MacBook Pro to the Internet, and I have the three wifi bars. However when I open Safari or Google Chrome it starts loading briefly but stops and then after a while says I'm not connected to the Internet even though it shows that I am.

    HI,
In System Preferences > Network what does it say for the WiFi connection ?
Does it say Connected with a Green Blob ?
Does it list the Network/router name ?
Does the Status say Connected ?
If all these are True then go to System Preferences > Security and Privacy > Firewall tab
In Here is the Firewall On ?
If so then Unlock the padlock if required and go to the Options Button.
IS it allowing Signed Software ?
Is your Browser listed as an Allowed software item ?

  • Problems With MacBook Connecting to the Internet

This is quite an annoying little problem that I have. And apparently Tech Support can't help me and just said "good luck" and hung up on me. So here we go:
I purchased a new MacBook about two weeks ago and it won't connect to my wireless at home. I can plug it into our cable box via an ethernet cable, but otherwise it refuses to work. My old laptop will connect to the wireless... and even my sister's new MacBook (we got them at the exact same time and they are the exact same thing) will connect to our wireless. I'm using a Linksys wireless router, and I have had other friends access my family's wireless through their Apple computers as well. My Airport reads that I'm connected to the router, but it can't find an Internet signal. I'm not really sure what route I should be taking now. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!
    macbook   Mac OS X (10.4.10)

I seem to be having the same exact issue. I took my Macbook over to my dad's house and I can not connect to the internet. The computer is connected to the router wirelessly, everything seems fine but it will not connect to the internet. My sister has the same exact Macbook, and her computer connects to the internet just fine. I run the Apple Internet Diagnostics and after running it, I get a message that says that my internet seems to be working fine. I also have a problem with my computer restarting when I shut the lid. Very very frustrating!

  • Time capsule won`t allow multiple devices to connect to the internet

I`ve got a 2TB time capsule that worked fine.
I moved to this condo where the is already a wired internet service available to each apartment. The access is made through a login and password whenever You open you browser, if connected directly on the WAN cable. No multiple logs are allowed.
When I used my Time Capsule to create a wi-fi network and serve as a router I could access the internet on my MacBook over the wi-fi just created. No problem at all. But whenever I try to log other devices (iphone, apple tv) it asks for my ap login and password, and of course it states that there`s already an active connection to that user and won`t grant me access.
I`ve then borrowed a tp-lynk router from a friend of mine, created a wi-fi network (without the time capsule on it), it asked for the log in and all but then everything worked fine and I could use all my devices through this network.
Back to the time capsule, I`ve tried different settings. First one was bridge mode, but it didn`t work. Tried DHCP & NAT but had the double NAT issue.
    Also I`ve tried this solution https://www.autoitconsulting.com/site/networking/configuring-an-airport-extreme- for-nat-only-mode/
    but it would`t work either.
My guess is that somehow Time Capsule is attributing different IP addresses to each device that enters the Wi-Fi network, and that`s the reason I can`t access the net, since the service provider won`t allow more than one connection. On the other hand TP-Lynk was able to connect to the internet service through one IP address and then connect to other devices.
Any idea on how to solve this issue?

Tried DHCP & NAT but had the double NAT issue.
If you got the TC working and had double NAT .. sorry but the TP-Link is exactly the same.. you cannot distribute a single IP without double NAT.. the TC tells you it is a problem.. the TP-Link doesn't.. otherwise there is no difference.
But it is important the double NAT is setup right.. ie you must use different ranges.. please tell us the IP you get from a directly connected computer..
If it is 10.x.x.x then you should move the TC to 192.168. rather than default IP of 10.0.1.1 .. the TP-Link already will use 192.168.x.x. which might also explain why it works better.

  • IPad 2 won't restore from backup or connect to the internet

    Hi,
I'm having some trouble with a 2-month old iPad 2.  The first of which was a sudden failure to connect to the internet on wifi, despite being able to connect to the network.  Have searched extensively, I tried all the solutions I could: airplane mode on and off, forget the network and reconnect, auto-brightness off, renew the DHCP lease, reset network settings, public DNS information - everything, and nothing worked.  The only thing I can't do reset the router as I'm on a public network and don't have physical access to it. When I connect to the network, after about 5 minutes I get details of the IP address, DNS server and all that stuff.  But I can't connect to the internet or even to the network's sign-in page.
So I thought there was nothing else for it but to do a restore.  What a mistake to make. For one thing, restoring to factory settings has done nothing for my wifi problem.  And now iTunes is unable to restore my iPad from the last backup.  It throws up an error message about not having enough hard drive space (I started off with about 7.8Gb free - and I had a lot less than that when I restored the iPad from my last iPad 1 backup when it was new). And when I quit iTunes, I have 0kb free on my hard drive.  Where has all the space gone?
    So I suppose I have 3 questions:
Where did my 7Gb of hard drive space go and how can I get it back?
How do I restore my iPad so that I haven't lost all of my notes, emails, calendar events and the like?
How do I make my iPad connect to the internet again?
I know where iTunes keeps its mobile backups on my hard drive, but I'm loathe to go in and start deleting stuff, because I would like to retrieve all the stuff I put on my iPad in 2 months of use.
Any advice on any/all of the issues above would be greatly appreciated as my own efforts have managed to kill my iPad and do some very strange things to my laptop.
    Thanks in advance,
    Gus

Have you installed any sort of anti virus or firewall software? Something that could be blocking the connection?
Do you have a different cable to try?

How do I get Lightroom to connect to the internet?  I've tested my internet connection and I'm able to.

  • Why does iTunes say it is not connected to the internet when the connection is active?

No problems running iTunes on Windows XP machine with Norton Internet Security.
Moved to new computer with Windows 7 - still running Norton Internet Security.  iTunes does not start when iPhone4 is connected with USB cable.  Worse problem is that all internet activity (check for updates, activate this computer, etc.) is halted with message that computer is not connected to the internet... but it is.  All browser and email activity works right.
Do I have a Windows 7 setting problem, a Norton Internet Security setting problem, an iTunes setting problem?
    Thanks in advance.

For the device connectivey issues try Andrei Cerbu's post here or see TS1538: iOS: Device not recognized in iTunes for Windows, in particular section 5, forcing a driver update.
I suspect Norton's firewall is blocking iTunes. I can't tell you offhand where to look to tweak things.

  • HP Pavillion - Web Pages Won't Load but I'm Connected to the Internet

I was on the internet and then the page seemed to lock up.  I closed the browser and reopened it and now I cannot get any web pages to load at all either in I.E. or Firefox.  It just says Waiting for "website" and that is it.  My other laptop connects to the internet fine using the same modem/router so it is a computer issue.  Not sure how it goes from working one minute to not the next.  It is a HP Pavillion G7-2270.  Thanks for any help you can offer.

Hello  , Welcome to the HP Forums! I understand your notebook shows it is connected but you are unable to browse. Can you tell me which version of Windows you are using? To see which version of Windows you are using click here: Which Windows operating system am I running? Here are some popular fixes for networking issues: Powercycle the network:
    1. Shut down your notebook.
    2. Unplug the power to your router.
    3. Unplug the power to your modem.
    4. Wait at least 45 seconds.
    5. Plug in the modem, and wait for it to come back online.
    6. Plug in the router, and wait for it to come back online.
    7. Turn on your notebook, and test your connection.
Reset the TCP/IP settings on your PC:
    1. Go to your start screen/menu and type CMD.
    2. Right click on the command prompt icon and chose Run as administrator.
    3. In the window that opens type "netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt" without quotes, and press enter.
    4. Restart your PC and test.
It may also help to reset the winsock catalogue:
    1. Go to your start screen/menu and type CMD.
    2. Right click on the command prompt icon and chose Run as administrator.
    3. In the window that opens type "netsh winsock reset" without quotes, and press enter.
    4. Restart your PC and test. If it seems to be connected but won't browse, flush the DNS:1. Go to your start screen/menu and type CMD.
    2. Right click on the command prompt icon and chose Run as administrator.
    3. In the window that opens type "ipconfig /flushdns" without quotes, and press enter.
    4. Restart your PC and test.
    Reinstall the network adapter drivers:
    1. Download the drivers from here but do not run them yet.
    2. Go to your start screen/menu and type Device Manager.
    3. Expand Network adapters.
    4. Right click on the wireless/ethernet adapter and choose Uninstall.
    5. Run the downloaded drivers from step 1.
    6. Restart your PC and test.
If those three steps do not resolve the issue, try this document published by Microsoft for networking issues: Wired and wireless network problems. You can change the operating system with the dropdown in the upper-right corner of the document. Let me know if that helps!

  • I just upgraded to Snow Leopard. Why do I get "you are not connected to the internet" when I hit software updates?

I am trying to upgrade the OS from 10.6.3 and, following Apple's instructions, I hit Software Update and get the message "Software Update can't check for updates because of a network problem. Software Update can’t connect to the update server. Make sure you’re connected to the Internet, and then try again." I am connected, so what is the problem?

For a starting place restart your router and modem with the mac asleep.

  • Why won't time capsule and Airport connect to the NBN satellite modem, when a Linksys router does flawlessly?

I've tried using both Airport Express and Time Capsule to connect wirelessly to the NBN "SkyEdgeII modem. In both cases the connection is unreliable, in particular many https pages do not open because safari cannot connect to the server. The crazy thing is that I can connect wirelessly using two different, current model Linksys routers, no problem at all.  I have spent many hours with the ISP tech support at Skymesh, making sure that the settings are right, but we continue to have a very flaky performance from both the Airport devices.

  • My new iphone4 connected to the internet fine at the store today, but will not connect to my wifi at home - it sees the guest network, but does not give me a place to enter the password

I just got a new iphone 4 (my first one) and the internet worked great at the store, as well as in the parking lot at the grocery store on the way home - yes I was playing with it!  Anyway, now that I'm home and the store is closed, it won't connect to my home wifi.  It sees the guest network, but it doesn't give me place to put in the password, so I'm not sure if that's why it won't work.  Also, I don't know what settings to put in for the screen that comes after the network choice screen - it has IP Addresses with DHCP, BootP, and Statis (I don't know what any of these are or mean!)  It also has a 'renew lease' button that I have no idea what to do with, and it has a section with HTTP proxy that is highlighted "off" but also has 'manual' and 'auto' options - maybe these are not set correctly?
Very frustrating that there is no manual, and the website doesn't really help with this at all.  Thanks so much!

If you look at the top left of your screen you will either see a 3G (or 4G if you have AT&T) or you will see the wi-fi symbol.  If you don't see the wi-fi symbol you are connecting to Gmail through your cellular data plan, not via wi-fi.
To answer your question, it doesn't happen often but when it does the steps I mentioned above will normally resolve it.  Hopefully you won't have any further problem with this.
