Why won't some movies get imported from camera?

I'm using iPhoto 6.0.6 with Panther, and a USB camera (PowerShot AS7100IS). Everything works great except for one thing: some movies I make with the cameras aren't seen by iPhoto and never imported. I have to do it with Image Capture utility, which is annoying. Does anyone know why this happens - what determines whether it sees the AVIs on the camera or not?

Size is the usual issue. iPhoto will baulk at importing large videos directly from a camera.

Randomly skips .mov during import from camera

Several months ago I upgraded to Tiger and iLife '06. I was excited to move to iPhoto 6 because of its ability to import stills as well as movies. iPhoto 6 never fails to import all of the stills from my Minolta Dimage XT, but the importing of movies is flakey. By flakey I mean that it skips importing some .mov files from the camera, so for example out of 6 .mov files it might import 4 of them leaving 2 that won't import. I've tried dragging them directly from the camera's folder to iPhoto. I've tried importing from the SD card via a card reader instead of the camera and the same problem occurs.
When iPhoto decides to skip importing a particular .mov file, the only way for me to get it to import is to copy the .mov file(s) from the SD card to a folder on the hard drive and then import them into iPhoto from the folder on the hard drive.
There is no apparent reason that these particular .mov files are skipped. The skipped .mov files have been various sizes, names, etc. For some reason iPhoto just won't import certain .mov files from the SD card. No error is ever given and I can't seem to find any message in any log file as to why.
Has anyone ever experienced a similar issue or know of any way for me to make iPhoto's importing of .mov files more reliable?

I've heard of this issue before but don't know the root cause. Oddly it is always with Minolta or Canon cameras. I'm not sure if there is a corolation there.
Thing I would try:
1.) Battery power on your camera should be at full - or run off of AC if you can - thats even better
2.) Make sure the date and time on the camera are in sync with the computer - this affects the computer's ability to see and correctly identify files
3.) Reformat your SD card - this is a function on your camera - I would reformat the card between every shoot- not just delete the pictures - check your camera's manual for "reformat media card"
4.) Try importing with the Image Capture Application - this will usually find any pictures / movies that do not identify correctly in iPhoto -- Esentially it is not nearly as picky as iPhoto is so it would see movie files that are corrupted / or slightly different in format
5.) Consult with Minolta - do they make a drive for this camera under the Mac OS X 10.4 - that might make imports easier for you

Why won't some .gif files import into Adobe Premiere 11?

Hello! New to Premiere here.
I'm working on a project which involves processing roughly 200 animated .gifs taken from the internet. Many of them will import nicely into Adobe Premiere 11.
The problem is that not all of them will do this. Many of them will give the following message and freeze the entire import process.
This seems like a strange error message to get because
a) It seems to say here that the .gif format IS supported
b) There don't seem to be any codecs for this 11.
The gif that produced that error message is below:
What especially frustrates me is that a gif with similar resolution and size will import, but the one above will not. Below is an example of a gif that will import into Adobe Premiere 11:
Is there an explanation for why this is the case? I have looked up this issue extensively on the internet, and every other person with this issue seems either to be stumped or find a solution for a much older version such as Premiere 8.

I'm happy to announce to you all that my "mp4 importing" issues has been sorted out. Now I import mp4 shot with the same Windows Phone 8 Device into Adobe Premiere Pro CS4. Only that for the moment, it doesn't play as fast as with ordinary player.
But how did I get it to work, you may wonder;
I simply installed Itunes on the system, I also installed an app called media monkey. I can't say which of the apps did the magic but the next time I tried to import mp4 files into Premiere Pro after these installations, it imported seamlessly.
Obviously there's a link between the required codecs and the itunes itself.
You may want to try it and hope it works for you.

Why won't some of my numbers spreadsheets from my iPad open with iCloud on my Mac (Yosemite)? When I look at the files in FiNader there's a grey bar next to the files that won't open.

I am having the same problem. Created new spreadsheet on iPad with fresh iOS and Numbers installs (3/2015) and am unable to open this spreadsheet in iCloud in Safari on MacBook Air (all current). I get the following message:
"Sorry, something went wrong.
This spreadsheet can't be opened right now. Please try again later."
Tried reopening on Mac from iCloud and resaving; still cannot open.
Quick fix: Copying the spreadsheet content from the iPad spreadsheet to one created on the desktop recovers the ability to open it in iCloud in Safari.

Why won't some photos or videos sync to my iPad when they work fine with iPhoto and iTunes? Other photos taken with same camera sync fine from iPhoto while certain events are inexplicably incompatible. I've recently foundvthecsame occurrence with certain mp3s and videos from iTunes.

For photos try deleting the photo cache from your computer and then re-try the photo sync and see if they then copy over - the location of the cache, and how to delete it, is on this page http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1314
Not all video formats that work in iTunes are compatible with the iPad - the supported formats are (from http://www.apple.com/ipad/specs/) :

Have you tried Advanced > Create iPad Version and then sync those versions to the iPad

If all of the contacts don't get moved into the address field(s), it's possible that some of the contacts in a Group contain information but not email addresses for those individuals.
Don't really know what else to suggest except, possibly, that you delete, then re-create the problem Groups.

I purchased some movies off iTunes from my account from my fathers IPad as a gift but didn't realize can not view if not logged with my account. Is there any way to save directly to the IPad (regardless of account)? Or transfer to him so he can view have?

Bridge 'get photos from camera' stopped working and Bridge won't recognize my DNG files anymore

So, I've got Bridge set up to get pictures from mem.card whenever I insert one in my laptop (win. 8.1). A week ago I installed Sony's PlayMemories. Without asking me it hijacked Bridge's task of getting pictures from my cards. What's worse, I tried to fire the 'get photos from camera' function manually from Bridge. Bridge starts working, but nothing happens. I uninstalled PlayMemories and reset Bridge, also told my laptop to run Bridge whenever I insert a card. Still nothing happens and I still can't get the 'get photos' function to run manually from Bridge. Anyway, I can still rund the DNG converter to get my pictures, but today Bridge won't recognize my DNG files - worked fine yesterday. I downloaded CS6 from this link https://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/policy-pricing/cs6-product-downloads.html and tried to run the installer, but it doesn't seem to do anything. Maybe I need to do a full uninstall off CS6 for it to do anything..? Anyway, if any of you guys could help me with my Bridge/CS6 issues I'd be grateful. I've got 3 sets of concert photos and a snowboard comp. shoot I need to finish this week

Please understand I am a frustrated customer like you, , but the availability of movies that have been shown before is dependant on licencing from the rights owners. Sky quite rightly have to pay the film studios for the ability to show to Sky's customers. As I understand it they purchase the right for a period of time, hence when the right expires then it has to be removed. The costing of the movies does reflect on the anticipated popularity of the programme, hence an older less popular movie might seem expensive but if not many people watch and pay that would be right. The apparent silliness of having movies in the store and on demand, allows those people who do not have a movie subscription to rent the movie on a one off basis. I agree that Sky seem to be licencing some programmes for shorter periods and it really upsets me when movies appear in buy and keep but not available to rent only. I recently queried Sky about Fortitude being available in OnDemand until 2022!, then of course found out that Sky owns the rights of the series. I can only say be careful if you are a movies subscriber and wish to watch a movie, not to select the Sky Store version if it is available in the Movies on Demand section. I recently wanted to watch a film that I found in Sky store at a cost, and just to be sure I searched for it and found it was to be shown on Channel 4 in a few days. I don't think we'll ever understand how such decision are made as to how long they licence movies for and how the charging model works with the film studios. Logically you would think that a smallish fee to have available indefinately and to pay the studio fee based on the number of rentals would be better, but that might be difficult to administer and Sky would have to have extra server storage fees, which they outsource. i got a backup for the files but even if they are on the mmc, when camera is connected fcpx doesn't see them. if i try to import a new shoot it works!!

Thx a lot Salty. As you suggest I found other staff on support pages. I deleted AVCHD structure and kept only .mts... Now what I need to do is to convert those files with handbrake or similar tool in .mp4 or .mov to make them digest to FCPX.

I've continued tests on different films, and tried my entire collection. I've found about two dozen that will play fine on the PC, but will not cooperate when streamed to either Apple TV or my iPad. I tried several more tests with the audio, and that turned out not to be a factor -- I could not replicate that on another test.
I wonder if something in the header of these files is corrupted or a flag is set incorrectly or something along those lines, as the data appears to be fine -- it's just not "handshaking" with my streaming hardware and/or the Apple Home Sharing code that powers it.
Is there any way for me to "scrub" these files and amend their headers, or get into the file and tinker with that info by hand?

This clearly gives the user the impression that there is a reading error where you want to copy the files from. Is that the actual error?
No, the actual error is that the file could not be written at the destination.
It is possible that it is not factually wrong because Lightroom first make a failed copying attempt without giving an error message, then still assumes that the files have been copied and tries to import them, and THEN makes a failed import attempt from the destination and gives the error message. But that would never be anyone's first guess when they experience that error message.
A much better error message would be: "The following files were not imported because they could not be copied to the destination folder."

I'm confirming that after trying several other ideas, the steps outlined here by S.E.A. and Amelia P. worked perfectly. For those of you having problems with certain songs not playing, or the wrong song playing, follow their "unsynch" "resynch" process. A few notes:
Before starting, I was confident that iOS 5, iTunes 10.5, and Mac OS X 10.7.2 were all up-to-date and functioning correctly.
After selecting my Device in iTunes (an iPhone 4S in my case), then selecting the "Music" tab and unchecking "Sync Music", be sure that it actually Applies the new settings (force a synch to be sure).
After this step, most of the songs disappeared from my device (including all of the corrupted ones) but not all songs (perhaps it left those that I purchased directly on the device?). In any case, don't worry about these. Just re-check the boxes you unchecked and then be sure to force a synch again. It should take a while to complete if you've got a lot of music.

Why won't some pdf-files open on tablet/phone?

I simply get the error saying: The document cannot be opened because it's not a valid pdf-document.
However I have no problems opening the file with my laptop, only my phone and tablet (Jellybean 4.2.2) won't open it.
My friends also have managed to open the file on their tablets (android/windows).
Have reinstalled and checked updates and tried other programs but none has worked for me.
I simply have no clue and would appreciate help.
