Why won't some music sync from iTunes to my iPhone 5?

I have purchased several items from the iTunes store with no trouble syncing and playing on my iPhone 4. Recently I purchased two iPhone 5's for myself and my son. His phone is synced to my iTunes account and can play all content. My phone initially synced all my music and comedy albums. Occasionally I would come across a song my iPhone music player refused to play. I would touch the song name, briefly see the song/album and it would flip back to my playlist/song list without playing or it would skip to another song. Sometimes skipping several songs in between and flashing quickly the song title.
To rectify this, I researched the problem on the forums and tried one of the suggestions of right clicking on the song in iTunes, converting the song to AAC and then deleting the original and re-syncing. After powering down and re-syncing, the 173 non-synced songs out of 808 purchased songs were no longer even on my phone.
I accessed the iTunes store through the app on my phone, found the non-downloaded songs in the cloud and manually downloaded them to my phone. Although I couldn't put them in the playlists I had created on iTunes (where they are checked and the playlist is checked for syncing) I did have them on my phone and they played perfectly. After my phone was plugged into a power source with iTunes open and my phone synced, the songs were once again missing from my phone.
I contacted Apple support and we spent some time trying different things:
1) Selected tab under iTunes preferences for devices  "Prevent iPhone from syncing automatically"
2) Reset all settings
3) Backed up my iPhone for a restore - which we never did.
I spoke then with a senior support consultant and we then:
1) Deleted the songs from my phone through Settings > General > Usage > Storage where my playlists remained but were empty.
2) We re-synced all my checked playlists. The songs were still missing.
3) On iTunes we selected "Sync all music". Songs were still missing.
4) Went to iTunes Store via iTunes on my Mac, looked up purchases and downloads, re-downloaded missing songs (there were only six of them and happened to be the ones that I converted to AAC).
5) Created new "Test" playlist and dragged two of the missing iPhone songs into it. Synced phone to include new playlist. Playlist appeared but was empty.
I had purchased two John Pinette comedy albums. One entire album will not sync and on the second, only two of the thirteen "songs" will sync. The support person asked if I wanted to change all of the m4a songs to mp3 and was going to show me how but when viewing the John Pinette "Still Hungry" album where the first and last song synced, they show the file ends with m4a, as do all of the songs that won't sync. This leads me to conclude that the file type isn't the issue, but that there is something corrupted with certain files from the iTunes store or a glitch that is incompatible with the IOS 6.1.
Has anyone else had a similar problem and have you been able to rectify it?

I have a similar problem and have spent three sequential days at the Apple Genius Bar before we were able to exclude most other possibilities and found that certain files (in my case all mp3s from CDs I own) that play just fine in iTunes 11.0.1 and that used to play in iOS 6.0.1 do not play in iOS 6.1. We restored the phone to factory settings and synced only a few of the music files that were problematic. They still did not play. We reproduced the problem on my iPad mini (iOS6.1).
Apple Telephone Support suggestion was to convert all mp3 files in iTunes to AAC (which according to Apple Website may degrade sound quality). No further suggestions or escalation but a recommendation to place comments on www.apple.com/feedback and, if there are enough complaints, someone at Apple might take an interest in this problem. Something has changed in iOS 6.1 where files that played on prior mobile system software no longer work.
Apple, please pay attention to this glitch with iOS 6.1.

What are you doing to try to transfer them and what error are you getting? There are probably a dozen possible reasons, so narrowing it down would be very helpful.

  • Why are my playlists not syncing from iTunes to my iPhone since updating to iTunes 11.0.2?

My selected playlists are not syncing from Itunes to my iPhone.  As a music teacher this is extremely problematic as I use my phone as my primary music player.  Anyone know why all music syncs but not the playlists?

First, you're not talking to Apple - this is a users' forum.  Second, sync operations work one way - iTunes to iDevice; create and modify your playlists in iTunes, then sync them to your iPhone.

  • Why won't my music sync from my Macbook Pro to my iPhone 5?

When syncing my phone, the music doesn't go from the computer to the phone. Just recently I got a bunch of physical albums and after I uploaded them to the computer, I wanted to put them on my phone. I checked to make sure I have enough data, and I did. But when I try to sync the music from my Macbook Pro to my Iphone 5, it doesn't work. On my computer it says that the music is on my phone, yet it isn't. I tried deleting all the music and resyncing it, but that didn't work either. It shows some of the songs greyed out on the computer with dotted circles next the them, what is that? Also, on my phone, some of the songs have circles next to them with squares in them and when i click them they just turn grey. I've been trying for a few days and I am getting very frustrated. Please help!

I have this same problem. It is constantly recurring and after trying just about everything, I'm almost ready to give up.
Things I've tried, that have not worked:
    restarting computer
closing all open apps on iPhone before sync
    restarting iphone before sync
    syncing with wire
    syncing without wire (over wifi)
converting the music files to another encoding
dragging the music files individually onto the iphone in iTunes
dragging a selection of music files
putting music files in a playlist and adding that playlist
    Does anyone have a solution?

  • Why won't my podcasts sync from Itunes onto my Ipod (5th Gen/30Gb/Video)?

I have other podcasts that played on my Ipod before. But the newer ones are not syncing on my Ipod. I did have TV shows sync on my Ipod. Why they would only sync and not the others is beyond me. Also are podcasts the same as video podcasts? I know on my Ipod there are categories called "podcasts, or video podcasts". Please help!!

    Error messages:
    1. Some of the videos in your itunes library, including the video "Derezzed by Daft Punk", were not copied to the iPod "Ba25's iPod" because they can not be played on this iPod.
    2. Five different videos (podcasts - TV and Film) were not copied because the video format is not supported by the iPod "Ba25's iPod".
I've had other podcasts sync onto my iPod from a few years ago.

  • WHY WON'T MY MUSIC SYNC TO MY IPHONE???

I have bragged about Apple for years.  I've sunk thousands of dollars into Apple devices, as well as apps, music and movies from iTunes.
Now, all of a sudden, I'm having a slew of issues.  First my movies - purchased from iTunes - wouldn't play correctly on my computer.  The picture and sound fall out of sync.  I spent 20 minutes on the phone with a friggin' SUPERVISOR and we still couldn't fix it!  It's not space issues - I'm not even using one quarter of my hard disk space.  I did everything he told me to do and they still won't play.
Guess what happened today?  I'm getting the ridiculous "-50" unknown error message when trying to sync music I purchased FROM iTUNES onto my iPhone.  Oh, it plays just fine on my computer.  I had several of my playlists loaded onto my iPhone already.  I visit the forums, and everyone says I should reinstall iTunes and restore my iPhone - so I do those things.  Now all of those playlists need to be put back on to my phone and NOTHING WILL SYNC TO MY PHONE!!!
I am one VERY short step away from ditching Apple forever.  I am sick to death of having to deal with constant issues.  Everything worked great until a couple of months ago, now you people cannot do anything to fix the issues your incompetent techs are causing.

    Hello alexandreak,
It sounds like your newly purchased music is not syncing your your iPhone.  I found a couple of resources that I think might help with this.
One thing you may want to consider is downloading the purchased songs directly to your iPhone.  You can find the steps to do that in the section titled "iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch" in the following article:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2519
If you prefer to sync the music to your iPhone using iTunes, I recommend turning off and turning on syncing music.  You can do this by unchecking "Sync Music" and then clicking "Apply" and then checking "Sync Music" and then clicking "Apply" again. You can find the syncing steps in the following article:
iTunes 11 for Windows: Set up syncing for iPod, iPhone, or iPad
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH12313
Additionally, it is important to note that songs with a cloud icon next to them in iTunes are streaming from iTunes and are not on your computer.  For these songs to sync to your device, you will need to clck on the cloud icon to download the song to your computer first.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    Best,
    Sheila M.

  • ITunes won't play music anymore from iTunes Match

In February I purchased the iTunes Match service and uploaded about 2000 songs to it.  Some purchased directly from iTunes over the years and some ripped from my CD collections.   After verifying that it works fine, I deleted the ~250GB of space that they took on my older MacBook Pro to make space for other things.
A couple of weeks ago I got my new MacBook Pro Retina (great!) and I've started to use iTunes on it.  I've added it to my Apple ID account and "authorized" it inside iTunes and expected to continue and use it to listen to music and all.
I was able to see all my music listed clearly and also all my genious mixes but nothing happens with I try to Play anything.   No message and no complaint, simply silence.   If I purchase and download a new song, I can play it, but nothing from the cloud!
I tried to "Update iTunes Match" and still nothing happens and I can't play a thing.
I tried to "Turn Off iTunes Match" and then turned it back on.  The entire list disappeared on me and after a long wait, I don't see it coming back... I'm out of the country right now and I see this small note at the bottom of the Music section of iTunes saying that "Music is available in the iTunes Store in select countries".    I'm using the US store and can certainly purchase music and movieds but the iTunes Match stopped working on me.

Well, after another restart of iTunes, my list of 2000 songs magically appeared and I can now play it.
So, this seemed to be a glitch that amended itself.

  • HT201249 Why won't my bookmarks sync from my iPhone to my macbook?

I am running the newest version of iTunes, and I can't get my bookmarks to sync from safari on my iPhone 5S to my brand new macbook. I googled it and several websites say to plug in my iPhone and click info under settings where there should be checkbox for syncing bookmarks, but I can't find it. All mine says under info is sync contacts and sync calendars, both of which it says are being synced over the air from iCloud. Any tips?

    Hi DabneyR,
If you are using iCloud syncing for your Contacts and Calendars, you will want to sync your Safari Bookmarks with iCloud as well (in the iCloud settings on the iPhone and iCloud System Preferences on the Mac).
    iCloud: Change iCloud feature settings
You typically don't want to sync that data with both iTunes and iCloud as you could end up with duplicates.
If you see duplicate contacts after setting up iCloud Contacts - Apple Support
    Take care,
    Nubz

I have had numerous problems with iphone 3gs so I reset it to factory settings but now I can't drag and drop my music from itunes library to iphone.  I have checked the box to manage music manually but still no joy, any suggestions pls?

Because you do not have manually manage music selected?

  • HT1386 why won't my ipad charge from my computer - my iphone does! and where has my facetime and contacts icons gone?

Why won't my ipad charge from my computer when my iphone does? also where have my facetime and contacts icons gone?

A computer USB port does not provide enough power to charge and run the iPad at the same time but it will charge it if the iPad is turned off.  It will take about four times as long to charge than with the iPad charger.
The Contacts icon may be inside a folder, such as Utilities.
There is no Facetime icon.  Start a Facetime link from a contact.

  • Why won't my music sync to my iPhone from iTunes?!?

I have been having such a hard problem with syncing my music from iTunes (which is up to date) to my iPhone 4S (which is also up to date). I have tried restoring my phone three times. It's recently backed up. All my music was wiped from my phone, on my phone it says it has 8.1 GB of free space. But on iTunes the bar (that informs you what takes up space on your device) tells me that there's music synced to the phone and its taking up 6.36 GB. But in Music on my phone it says there's "No Content"!!! I've tried to sync it repeatedly. I've tried unchecking the music box syncing it and then checking it again and syncing it. And every couple attempted syncs iTunes will say its syncing my music and then on the fourth or fifth song cancels the sync. There's definitely enough space on my 16GB phone, I don't know whats going on! I just want my music back!!! (Also, most of the music might not be directly bought from Apple, if you get my drift. )

I found the route of the problem! All the songs under 'On This Phone' are completely grayed out! The only question is now how do I ungray them???

  • HT2729 Why won't certain videos (downloaded from iTunes) sync on my iPod?

I have a new iPod Classic and it won't sync some of my videos. I've reset it. I've got everything checked. All files and videos play in my library. There all in the same location and files. Its  After syncing I get the "some videos were not synced because the format is not supported". All the vids were downloaded from iTunes Store. WTH? Can anyone think of a solution? What is wrong?
    Thanks,
    WB

    Hey Willm700,
Great question. iTunes defaults to downloading HD content when available, whereas your iPod classic is not compatible with HD playback. The solution would be to download the SD version of the content from your purchase history:
iTunes: Sync purchased HD videos to iPod or iOS device
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4223
The easiest way to put purchased videos onto your device is to download the videos from iTunes in the Cloud. This should make sure that you get the highest resolution video optimized for your specific device.
Syncing video to iPhone 3G or earlier, iPod touch (1st or 2nd generation), iPod classic, iPod 5th generation, or iPod nano (3rd, 4th, or 5th generation):
    Thanks,
    Matt M.

  • How can you get your music synced from iTunes to your iPod when a window pop ups on the screen saying"The iPod "Edward's iPod" cannot be synced. An unknown error occured (13019))?

I had 429 songs already on my iPod Touch. When I was in the process of syncing a song from my iTunes Library on to my iPod, a window popped up on the screen saying, ""The iPod "Edward's iPod" cannot be synced. An unknown error occured (13019)). I click "Device" on my iTunes Library to make sure the song was in my iPod. It showed the song that was recently synced now listed under "Device", but when I physically looked for the song on my iPod Touch, it does not appear on there at all. It all started when I decided to put a Playlist I created in the iTunes Library and transferred it on to my iPod. Do you know why it may affected my syncing process and is there any way where I could get the syncing function back to normal so that I can continue adding songs on my iPod? Thank you for listening.    P.S. My iPod iOS version is 4.3.5.

  • When using time machine with external hardrive to backup, some music items from iTunes and some photos from iPhoto do not transfer to backup hardrive.  What am I ding wrong?  Using latest version of mountain lion.

When I use time machine with my external harddrive to back up computer, some music from iTunes library, and some photos from iPhoto library are missing when I check backup disk.  I am using latest version of mountain lion.  Am I doing something wrong?

First, Time Machine doesn't completely back up the iPhoto library while iPhoto is running. Make sure you quit iPhoto after making any changes to allow a backup to take place.
This simple procedure will clear your Time Machine settings, including both overt and hidden exclusions. If you have a long exclusion list that can't be recreated easily, you may prefer a more complicated procedure that preserves the exclusion list. In that case, ask for instructions. Otherwise, do as follows.
Triple-click the line below to select it:
    /Library/Preferences/com.apple.TimeMachine.plist
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
    Services ▹ Reveal
from the contextual menu. A Finder window should open with a file selected. Copy it to the Desktop. Then move it (the original, not the copy) to the Trash. You'll be prompted for your administrator password. Reboot, recreate your settings in the Time Machine preference pane, and run a backup to test. If TM now performs as expected, delete the file you copied to the Desktop.

  • Why won't my ipod sync with iTunes?

I have a first gen iPod Touch, running iOS5.1.1
When I connect to iTunes, it is recognized, and I can manually sync.  However even when syncing, no new music or photos move onto the iPod.  It just rattles through the sync stages & nothing changes
I used to think this was a memory issue, but I still have 1GB free space & I am not trying to add so much that it will completely fill (as far as I can tell)
    Any suggestions?
    thanks

1 GB of free space is not much.
You must have a 3G iPod since those can go to iOS 5.1.1. A 1G can only go to 3.1.3
    First verify your sync settings
iTunes: Syncing media content to iOS devices and iPod
Next backup and restore from backup via iTunes
Last, restore to factory settings/new iPod via iTunes
iOS: Back up and restore your iOS device with iCloud or iTunes
