Why won't the 5.0.1 "security and stability update" download? All I get is pinwheel (MacBook pro, OS 10.6.8)

For weeks now, I get a daily "SOFTWARE UPDATE" pop-up window urging me install a "security and stability update" for Firefox 5.0.1. if I ignore it or click ASK LATER, it comes back. if I click UPDATE FIREFOX, all I get is pinwheel, for hours, with no progress in striped progress bar.

Hello:
First, permission repair is, IMHO, a waste of time.  In the old days, we whispered that like some sort of incantation.  I have not seen a permission problem in years.  The messages, incidentally, are not a concern.  Apple has gotten smart with OS X 10.7 and eliminated them.
If you were having problems, running repair DISK from your software install DVD is a good idea.
What updates were to be installed?  In any event, trash a preference file (com.apple.softwareupdate.plist) and restart.

There's no 3.6.18, so there appears to be a glitch in the update checking. Or the message is not really from Firefox (malware site).

  • After AVG PC Tune up, software update message for security and stability update is available FireFox 3.6.18. Should I Update?

My Dell laptop (Operating on Windows XP) was hit with multiple viruses - I could not open Mozilla Firefox or any other applications for that matter. After much time and many attempts, I was finally able to install and run an AVG Scan and then an AVG PC Tune up. 4,559 problems found and repaired. After the repairs, I received the following message:
"Software Update - A security and stability update for Firefox is available: Firefox 3.6.18 - It is strongly recommended that you apply this update for Firefox as soon as possible. - an underlined link reading, "View more information about this update" and then 2 choices - "Ask Later" or "Update Firefox." Since part of the problem was with Firefox and some error messages pointed to that, I'm hesitant to click on any of the three options above. Can you help me to get past this error message, please. I am sending this from my home computer. Thank you. Diane

  • Is a solo window saying "A security and stability update is available." to install FF26 really valid or is it bogus?or

Here is what the questionable window looks like:
    upper left corner/across and down
ln1 (ff global logo) "Software Update"
    ln2 "Update available"
ln3 "A security and stability update for Firefox is available:
    ln4 "Firefox 26.0"
ln5 "It is strongly reco'd that you apply this update for FF asap.
ln6 HTML Link "View more info about this update"
ln7 (bottom of window) "ask Later" button and "Update FF" button
While entering this info the window went away!!!
Before it did i could not copy any of the text (do have screen shot however) and the link did not resolve to any web address. Looked like std FF page but NEVER seen anything like it before!
no way i was going to click anything except the close [X] button.
If it is valid, you need to remove the restrictions on it; to make it less suspicious.
If it is bogus, do you have a plugin or addon to intercept such malicious probes?
    Currently using FF25.0.1; on xp/sp3
    thanks

  • "A security and stability update for FF has bee n dnlded & is ready 2 B installed" Update: FF 37.0.2 but 37.0.1 is most recent. What to do????

Rcvd a Firefox "Software Update" which said: "A security and stability update for FF has been downloaded & is ready to be installed" Update: FF 37.0.2
Message has the option to restart now or later. I'm on ver 37.0.1 and FF says it is the MOST RECENT! Is this safe (from Mozilla) or a Scam/Phishing attempt? What to do????

There is a 37.0.2 that came out recently. If you don't trust the installation prompt, cancel it. You can check using the Help menu, About Firefox. Either:
    * "3-bar" menu button > "?" button > About Firefox
    * (menu bar) Help > About Firefox

  • I have leopard and want to upgrade to lion. I have a macbook about 3 years old and wonder if I should just get a new macbook pro ($$$) instead. Is it worth the headache to upgrade to snow leopard and then lion? How does lion perform on an intel core duo 2

I have a macbook about 3 years old running leopard. I amwondering ifitwouldbeworth the trouble to install snowleopardand then lion ($60.00) or just buy a new macbook pro ($$$$$$). How does lion perform on an intel core 2 duo processor?

I have Lion installed on a Mini with a C2D processor. The same Mini has Snow Leopard on another partition and there is no noticeable difference in operational speed between the two OS's. But compared to my new MBPro 17" with a 2.83GHz i7, the Mini running Lion is noticeably slower. So if you can afford anew MBPro, then I would get it because you will probably be unhappy with the performance of Lion on the older MBPro. The other benefit of getting a new MBPro with Lion is that if you have any Power PC applications currently on the old MBPro, which will not operate in Lion, then you still have the ability to use them. Many users got stung by upgrading to Lion, only to find they could no longer use the older PPC applications.

  • Why won't the music file I clicked and dragged onto my website publish?

I followed all the instructions in iWeb for inserting a music file on a page, by clicking on the music file and dragging it onto the iWeb page of my choice.  Yet when I attempt to publish the changes, I get an error message saying "There was an error communicating with the FTP server. Try again later, or check with your service provider."  I've tried it numerous times, but always get that message.  I've tried changing the file name so that it does NOT include any spaces, but that doesn't work.  Then, I tried replacing the spaces with underscores, but still it won't publish.  Anyone have any idea how I can get this to work?

To verify that it's not the music file publish your site to a folder on your hard drive and open it locally with your browser. Click on the site's folder and select Local Folder in the Publish To menu.
If the music file is there and plays OK then do this:
go to the System/MobileMe preference pane and log out of MMe.
login with a bogus username and password like "test" and "test". This clears the caches.
login with your correct username and password, launch iWeb and try publishing to MobileMe again.

  • I keep getting a message that reads Introduction: A security and stability update for Firefox is available - 3.6.15 and when I click to update it can't connect to the server. What's wrong?

I'm using Mac OS X version 10.6.6. The message strongly recommends that I apply this update for Firefox as soon as possible but when I click Update Firefox, it seems to try and update but never really gets started.

  • I have tried to update and it reports a security and stability update is available but says I do not have permission. I do not know what to do

Okay, I hit "help" and then updates which it reports there is one but I do not have permission to install it. I am at a loss as what to do

If you have problems with updating or with the permissions then easiest is to download the full version and trash the currently installed version to do a clean install of the new version.
Download a new copy of the Firefox program and save the DMG file to the desktop

I have an Apple OSX10.6.5. I am having difficulty with the Scottrade website and am wondering if my inability to install the above update is part of the problem.

Maybe it is better to wait with updating.

  • Being offered 6.0-beta as a "security and stability" update from 5.0-stable

My Mac is, or should be, on the -stable channel for Firefox updates, yet I am being offered an upgrade from 5.0-stable to 6.0-beta rather than to 5.0.1. about:config has "beta" in app.update.channel, and labels this "default" rather than "user set" -- so this is a client-side glitch rather than a server-side one, but I'd still like to know how this happened and why.
Addendum: I tried changing that pref to "release" and to "stable", but the about box still offered the 6.0-beta upgrade rather than the 5.0.1 upgrade. Is this because the beta has already been downloaded? How can I get it to give me the 5.0.1 upgrade instead?

Did you ever install a beta release in the past?

  • Update message offers to download 3.6.16 as a security and stability update for 3.6.13, but will not download on Mac OS 10.4.11

The first time I received the update message, I clicked on "Update Firefox," it spent awhile downloading, then presented an error message stating that I didn't have "enough privileges" for the update. Since I keep getting the same update message several times a day (extremely annoying), I tried updating two more times (most of the time I just close the update message). Both times it just kept downloading and downloading, and hadn't finished by the time I shut down for the day. If I am not allowed to update, I do wish that the update messages would STOP! I have 3.6.13 and will be replacing this computer soon, so I would rather just leave things as they are and not keep getting pestered to do something that can't be done.

Using your link, I downloaded the new version. When I dragged the Firefox icon into the applications folder, it asked if I wanted the new version to replace the existing one, and I said yes. I was then told that it couldn't be done because I had insufficient privileges for some items. Is the reason for this that I didn't trash the old version BEFORE dragging the new one into the applications folder (under the assumption that "replace" meant that the old version was trashed as the new one was installed)? If not, it appears that I am back to the same problem I've had before.
Since I'll be replacing this computer soon, it seems too troublesome to bother with this update. I'd just like the update reminders to go away!
