Why won't the Airport Utility recognize my Airport Express Base Station
I have an Airport Express Base Station I had recieved from a friend of mine. It is a 802.11n Wi-Fi Station, and I'm running OSX 10.7.4. When I open airport utility 6.0 it can't find my devie and the same with Airport Utility 5.6. I've tried resetting the station and plugging it directly into the computer via ethernet cable but nothing has happened. Someone help?!
Nevermind, I figured this one out. Just perform a hard reset. Unplug the base station, push and hold the reset button then plug the station back in while still holding the button in. Continue holding till the the LED flashes yellow really fast. Release and wait till the Airport Express starts up.

I have a WiFi system in the house that uses the Airport Extreme for a hub and an older Express for sending music from my Mac to my sound system. Everything worked great till yesterday. When I go to Networks I see the Extreme and I see the Express but the Express is no longer connected and I get an error message "this version of AirPort Utility doesn't support this base station". Any ideas?
This sounds as if you have an older AirPort Express that is no longer supported by the newer Mavericks operating system.
To check and see if that might be the case, locate the model number on the side of the AirPort Express. It will start with an "A" followed by four numbers. Hard to see in the faint print.....so you may need reading glasses or a magnifying class to see the model number clearly.
Model numbers A1084 and A1088 of the AirPort Express are no longer supported by AirPort Utility in Mavericks.
You will need to use a Mac running Leopard, Snow Leopard, or a PC to be able to administer the older AirPort Express. -

My airport express works on my MBPro 17 w/ 10.5.8 but not my MBAir11". The MBAir says that this version of Airport utility doesn't support this base station. Is ther any chance I can use this with my MBAir?
Is this an older "round" version of the AirPort Extreme? If yes, it is true that AirPort Utility 6.x no longer supports the older AirPort Extreme and AirPort Express models.
A model number......located on the bottom of the Extreme or on the side of the Express would be helpful to confirm what you have.
Apple probably does want you to buy a new AirPort Extreme.
The workaround might be to use a Mac or PC running a 5.x version of AirPort Utility.
A more complicated workaround would be to install AirPort Utility 5.6 on Mountain Lion. This is not supported by Apple......it does work for me.....but may not work for you. See this article for more details:

How can I administer a Gen1 Airport Express from, my MacPro (OS 10.9, Airport Utility 6.3.2). I can see the Express in the WiFi window but from the Airport Utility I get the following message: " This version of AirPort Utility doesn’t support this base station. Go to AirPort Service and Support for more information." Of course there's nothing of value on the support page. Any clues anyone?
Apple has dropped support in Mavericks (10.9) of the AirPort Express and AirPort Extreme models that were discontinued more than six years ago.
You can still administer the older AirPort models if you have a Mac running Leopard, Snow Leopard, or a PC. -

Per chance is your AirPort Express an 802.11g model? If so, you will need to use AirPort Utility v5.6 to administer it. However, this version will not install under OS X Mountain Lion without a workaround.

I have tried everything for over 3 hrs. I purchase really good Audioengine speakers and an Airport express. Everything was streaming fine via Itunes until I was prompted to do an update yesterday. Now Airport Utility won't recognize the Airport Express. I tried everyhing. I have an older Mac desktop and simply wanted to stream music to the remote speakers. I tried reet button on the Airport express, re-booted my computer, modem, wireless router. Help!
Be sure you performed the "hard reset" correctly. The following is an excerpt from Resetting an AirPort Base Station or Time Capsule FAQ
Press and hold the reset button with a pen or pencil until you see the status light (LED) start to flash amber rapidly, which should occur after about five seconds.
Release the button, and the AirPort Base Station or Time Capsule will hard reset.
... but read the entire document to ensure you do it correctly. An Express that has been "hard reset" will create an open network with the name "Apple Network nnnnnn" where nnnnnn = the last few digits of its MAC address. Select that network.
If you do not see the network in your Mac's Wi-Fi menu with that name, the "hard reset" did not take effect, which will happen if you do not hold its little reset button depressed long enough. In that case do it again.
Following the "hard reset", reconfigure your Express. -
The airport utility cannot find a configured base station. How do I connect?
I just bought a Airport Time Capsule and want to configure it. I plugged-in my broadband modem into the WAN port, but when I started-up the Airport Utility, it states the message ' No configured Airport base stations have been found'. How do I configure my Time Capsule?
It should show as new device in the airport utility..
If not, factory reset it and it will show up..
You do need a Mac with at least Lion and latest airport utility.. with wireless turned on.
Or you can download the airport utility for iOS and run it on your phone or ipad. -
Airport Utility doesn't "see" my base station now
I've got an HP Pavilion running Vista. Have an Airport Extreme base station which was working fine with it, both Internet and Bonjour, until I had a problem last week and had to do a factory install from a disc.
I had a backup, and restored using that, but now Airport doesn't recognize the base station any more. I plugged my Internet in using an ethernet cable and downloaded the very latest Airport software. I tried turning off both Windows firewall and Norton firewall. No help.
I poked around Airport Utility, tried to open the baseconfig file. It asks me what folder it's in. I've done a Windows "Search" and there is no such file on the computer.
This base station continues to work fine with the Intel iMac a few feet away. My Pavilion just seems to be missing something after the restore. Thanks for any suggestions.Any thought on what settings I need to change on the PC to get it to see the base station?
Often, this issue is caused by either the Windows Firewall blocking the attempted connection, or by the anti-virus software doing the same thing...or, it can be a combination of both things.
Check the settings on both applications to look for "blocked" connections and change the status to "allow" the connection.
No guarantees, but this will solve the issue perhaps 60-70% of the time. -
Airport Utility cannot find my Extreme base station but everything works!
I must be going crazty, but I can't figure this one out. I've had my Extreme and Express configured since November of 2007. Airport Utility would always find them and let me look at the configuration. I don't believe that anything major has changed on my laptop. Today I went to run Airport Utility and it cannot find my 2 stations. Again, everything is working, I can surf the net, from various laptops throughout my house.
I had to do a factory reset to the extreme, and thankfully I remembered the 10.0.1.1/public and was able to reload a baseconfig I had. After this I still couldn't find the extreme nor the express with Airport Utility.
Does anyone have any suggestions? Why would Airport Utility stop finding my stations?

The base station just "vanished" one day after working perfectly for about two months. I first discovered this when I was unable to print - I began troubleshooting by entering the utility, only to discover the base station was not listed.
I finally deleted my networking settings in Vista, and then did a factory reset on the Aiport Extreme. I then set everything up from scratch again to successful resolution.
Then again one day a short time after that, it vanished again! In frustration, I disconnected Airport and put it away. I tried setting up a new Dlink I purchased to replace the Airport, but the Dlink didn't work either!!! Dlink tech support couldn't fix the problem and suggested I get my money back. I then, as a last ditch attempt, reconnected the Airport. It automatically found the base station without me doing anything besides just hooking it back up!
It worked for about two weeks and now it vanished again! The utility upgrade released the other day has not fixed this problem. I guess I'll delete networking connections again in Vista, and do a factory reset to Airport again.
I guess Airport and Vista just don't play well together. -
Airport Utility will not display any base stations.
I just had a new hard drive installed in my two year old MAC, since the last one crashed and have Mavericks installed. I have tried to un-install the application so I can re-intall a new one but the system will not let me. I am running a 5th generation of Airport Extreme which by forcing the back methoed of pulling the airport and continualiy doing a hard factory reset on the device, we have determained that the application Airport Utility for Mavericks is defective but there is no patch or update available; how do i get the application to show my base station so I can monitor who is conected to my internet.
I'm not interested in ascribing blame either but waiting for Apple to fix something that isn't broken will only divert attention from seeking the problem's underlying cause. Assuming the AirPort Utility app on your Mac remains unaltered, it's exactly the same one everyone else is using. Should there be any doubt about that, reinstalling OS X will obviate any concern.
I suggest the following for you to consider as you deem appropriate.
Apple's Wireless Diagnostics may supply some additional helpful information.
To use it, hold an option key while you click your Mac's Wi-Fi icon, and choose Open Wireless Diagnostics...
The following authentication dialog will appear:
Authenticate with your Admin password, then click the Continue button in the following:
The network analysis and diagnostic tests will take several minutes to complete:
When it completes, if your wireless network is functioning properly the following will result:
If something is amiss, supposedly the results will be different and you will be presented with helpful information.
Assuming your connection is "working as expected" select Continue to summary and click Continue:
Ignore the pre-populated text field, which is provided as a place for you to type in additional information should Apple ask for it in the course of obtaining technical assistance from them. Apple has no way of knowing where your router is located in your home, and certainly doesn't know if you even have an upstairs bedroom closet.
Click Continue.
The next step will also take a few minutes:
When it finishes, you will be presented with a summary that may or may not be useful to you. Let me know if it is.
The WirelessDiagnostics-xxx.tar.gz file deposited on your Desktop can be dragged to the Trash, or you may wish expand it and examine its contents. It's up to you. -
Airport Utility can't find my base stations
I've got an Airport Extreme base station with a printer connected to it - all three of my Macs print to it wirelessly.
Now I'm trying to set up an Airport Express elsewhere in the house for AirTunes. But Airport Utility doesn't see my AE... in fact, it doesn't see the base station either, from any of my computers. I've reinstalled Airport Utility, tried using older and newer versions, and I've never had problems setting up networks before.
I took the AE to a Genius Bar, and it worked right away. So what's going on that I can't set it up on my own (otherwise working) network?I just had this issue with a Refurbished unit I recently purchased and had to reset the AEX to factory settings.
How long did you wait? Sometimes it takes a while for all the stations to show up in the list.
If nothing else works, you can connect the AEX via ethernet cable.
