Why won't video play from external disc drive?

I have an LG external disc drive (it's actually Super Multi) that a bought about 1 1/2 years ago when I bought my Macbook air. I am using OS X 10.9.5. I have downloaded music from CDs. I have a DVD course for work and I can pull up the outline and study guides, but when I go to play there video portion, I get a black screen with controls, but can't get the video portion to play. Anyone have ideas?

Download VLC player and see if that allows you to watch the video.

Thanks .Ralph. The problem is only on the iPad 2only. I have an iPad 1 as well and it never had the problem. The only videos that I have tried are you tube and the tutorials on apple.com. I have absolutely no problem on either of my laptops or desktop PC's. Only the iPad 2. I am a new Apple user, so not very familiar yet with the product, but this is an absolute deal breaker for me. With Apple's reputation I was not expecting any such problems and it is beyond my skill set to solve it. Very frustrating. Again, no problem with you tube videos. I don't watch movies, so am not a Netflix member and haven't tried that yet, only you tube videos and apple.com tutorial videos. I have to watch those on my laptop. Again, I found a fix to the you tube problem. It was a link to a site. www.youtube/html5. html5 video player trial that you click on and once done, the videos on the you tube app started working great. They were doing the same thing as the tutorial videos prior to that. No such luck with the other web videos, at least the ones that i have tried. Hope this is enough info and understandable. You might check out the html5 site. I didn't thoroughly understand why, but it worked. You may understand it better. I am a proficient user, but far from an I.t. Pro. I have read Many posts with similar problems, but no simple solutions and the ones I did try didn't work. Speed tested well. Channel is set to auto and always different than neighboring networks, usually channel 11. Tried disabling QOS as suggested....no good. I am completely stumped. Any help is greatly appreciated. LR won't show images from external hard drive now.

I have LR 5. I updated in March from LR3. I just purchased a second external hard drive to start using for my images after filling up my first. I just tried to go back to external hard drive #1 to look at images from last month, and I can't pull them in to lightroom for some reason. When using external hard drive #1 after updating to lr5, I always had to go to Edit >Open Recent to open a previous catalog to access my images. I think this has something to do with it, because there aren't any other catalog options in LR5 when I switch from external hard drive #2 back to external hard drive #1. I need those images pronto to finish projects!!! Please help and thank you!

This is relevant portion of the support document with a bit of editing for clarity.
If iTunes is running, quit iTunes.
Using a Mac click the icon to open iTunes and immediately press and continue to hold down the Option key.
You should see the following screen:
If iTunes opens normally, close it and try again.
Once you've got that dialog you have two options. If your previous iTunes library database is stored on the external drive use Choose Library to browse to it and open it. If you only have the media folder on the drive then use the Create Library option to create a new iTunes library at /iTunes on the external, move the media folder to /iTunes/iTunes Media and then add it to your new empty library.

When I receive a video message from a 4s phone the video is very distorted and has no sound. I have an iPhone 4. I receive all other videos okay.

When I was searching for people that had the same problem as me, I found one that said to go on amazon and by a new charger flex. I got the new charger flex and my iPhone charges again. It is not that expensive and my iPhone charges now

ITunes 11 won't import .mov video files from external hard drive but will from internal.

I'm having a problem with iTunes 11.0.1. I can't import .mov video files stored on an external hard drive. I can however import .m4v files from the same external drive. Using either the add to library option or dragging files from the finder.
I can add .mov files from the internal though. Strange I know.
The reason behind this posting is that I'm using iFlicks to convert my TV and movies from my external drive for Apple TV and add all relevent meta data, keeping the files on the external drive and having iTunes link to them.
I would like to be able to simply create a general iTune compatiable file using iFlicks which only takes a minute or two per file to convert. I'm currently converting them to .m4v just for the sack of being able to import them into iTunes from an external drive takes 45 minutes per file.
Has anybody else had this problem? Any ideas on a fix to allow me to import .mov files from an external drive into iTunes without copying it to the iTune library file.

This might be worth a shot - basically seeing if Vista permissions could be the culprit.
Give yourself FULL control and ownership of the exHD, let's call it M:
How to Take Ownership and Grant Permissions in Windows Vista
Take control of the top level folder and ALL subfolders.
Try creating a new blank ITL file on M: by pressing *and holding* the shift key while itunes starts. See if you can add everything again.

Mac did apparently attempt to automatically restart with Disk B as the startup drive, but the result is the infamous folder with the question mark.
To restart in 10.6.8, I have to turn the computer off then on with the switch at the left rear bottom of the display and hold down the D key on the keyboard.
In System Preferences, Startup Disk shows both disks and allows Restart on Mac OS X, 10.9.1 on Disk B
However, the result is still the infamous folder with the question mark.

You sound like you are doign everyting right.
What did come out in the detailed telling is that it does not comlete install - it fails during the interim restart.
So the installer thinks all is well, btu isn't.
The OWC drives are obviously mac-friendly.
Wish i had more to say, except maybe - download to and run the installer from the mac itself.
Why are you not booting from the external and installing on the mac? That makes more sense to me...

Why won't videos play in Firefox?

Videos in YouTube and news sites will not play. Everything worked last night. This afternoon no videos play. I tried updating Real Player plug-ins, re-installing Real Player, installing QuickTime, checking QuickTime plug-ins, etc. Nothing works.

10.2.2 (12) not playing from external hard drive

Since updating iTunes on my Mini 10.6.7 I am having a hard time playing any type of file from iTunes. I have my iTunes library stored on an external hard drive and it has been working fine for the past year. Since this latest update to iTunes, when I click on a song, video, podcast, etc. I getting the spinning beach ball of death and if I open the "force quit" menu iTunes shows "application not responding".
I also have a Verizon iPhone that I sync via iTunes. I don't know if that is having any adverse affect or not.
Is anyone else having this problem? Any suggstions?

How do i get itunes 11 to stop adding music played from external hard drive to itunes library

I use itunes 11 to play music from my external hard drive and when i am finished using the hard drive and disconnect it the artist and songs appear in the itunes libary and when i click on it to play them it cannot locate the file and i assume this is becuse under the advanced prefrences tab i unchecked the auomaticly add played music to itunes library. I do not want my external hard drive music to be added to itunes library which at this point it does not but it is still showing the music in the library even though it cannot be played this is very fustrating please help. how do i get the artist and songs played from the external hardrive from appering in the itunes library.

Do you have a working copy of the library anywhere? The key file is called iTunes Library.itl and normally exists inside <User's Music>\iTunes. This is the file that knows what is in your library and each of the playlists, and holds ratings, play counts etc. Changing the media folder path in preferences tells iTunes where you'd like it to store media in future. It doesn't magically connect iTunes to any media that might already be there, or fix links to media that has been moved, or make it pick up a non-existent library file. If the worst comes to it you will need to import the media into the new empty library.
See Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device if you have any of these to recover ratings, play stats and playlists, and to associate your device with the new library.

ITunes Media Folder won't switch location from external hard drive

So for the last few years I've had my iTunes library stored on an external hard drive (a LaCie Quadra), but I'm out of space, so I got a new one (a Lacie Rugged). However, when I go to change the iTunes Media folder location to the new iTunes folder in my Rugged, it's not switching over, and in fact what's even weirder is I've just discovered no matter where I set the iTunes Media folder location to, my iTunes library will only play from the iTunes folder in my old Quadra. I've Reset it numerous times, and even set the location to the Desktop (on which I have no music), yet it still is playing from my Quadra. It's as if it's locked onto it.
Does anyone know what's going on here and how to fix it? I should note I think I did get it to switch to my Rugged for a bit, as the first time I switched the iTunes Media to my Rugged (which at the same time my Quadra was still connected) I bought a song, which is no where to be found on my Quadra. But ever since I disconnected the Quadra, this problem started. Also, to transfer my files from my Quadra to the Rugged, I connected the Quadra via Firewire 800 and the Rugged via USB, and I intend to use Firewire with my Rugged from now on. Could that affect what's going wrong here? And FYI, every time I've connected to the Rugged, it does go through the Consolidate Files process, but that hasn't done anything.

Do you only have media on the external (which by the way is not a "library" because it is lacking many parts of a complete library), or do you have a complete iTunes folder with library files and support folders (a true library)?

If you have your entire library on the external drive, copy the iTunes folder from one drive to the other. Start iTunes while holding down the option/alt key and select the relocated iTunes folder on the new drive.

How to import video files from external hard drive?

I receive an error "You're trying to import a file from a DVD or Removable Media. Please use Video Importer for importing Videos..." however when I try this I still cannot import video files. This is extremely frustrating as we have 32 copies of this software and this is sarting to become a common issue. Please help and many thanks.

Taking your particular .avi files out of the equation, can you import any other format from Add Media/Files and Folders pointed to this external hard drive? What is the format of the external hard drive? NTFS or FAT32?
It is my recollection that AVCHD.avi has always been reported as highly problematic. Yet you seem to be saying that you have no problem importing them in to the project from the desktop with the program's Add Media/Files and Folders/Project Assets to Expert workspace Timeline.
Did you purchase your Premiere Elements 12 from the Mac App Store or from Adobe? If Mac Store, what do you have Adobe Premiere Elements Editor or Adobe Premiere Elements Quick Editor or some variation thereof?

I moved video files that were originally from Flip Video recorder and uploaded to my Macbook to an external hard drive to save space. However, I can't seem to figure out how to get them back onto my computer, so I can start burning DVDs. I tried dragging and dropping, but that doesn't seem to work. Please help!!

Copy /Home/Pictures/iPhoto Library to your external drive. Delete the one on your internal drive. Now create an alias to the iPhoto Library's new location and put the alias in the original location. Be sure the alias is named "iPhoto Library".

Cannot Access video clips from external hard drive

I have been using PE9 for six to nine months. My normal workflow has been to create a separate project file on a 500g external HD. This file includes all video clips (.mov files) and the Project.PREL file.
This worked great until just recently. I can no longer bring the .mov clips in the project timeline or sceenline from the hard drive. Using the “Get Meda” command only an “imcomplete” file is uploaded, and when I try to drag the clip to the timeline, the program is asking me where the file is. Something has changed – and I am not sure what or how to fix it.
The image above is from a project where I am having this problem. The clips that have images in them are uploaded from my laptop hard drive. Other others are from my external hard drive - and those are the ones that the program cannot "locate". This is what I am trying to understand how to fix. Again, this just suddenly started happening - so somehow I have changed something, I would think.
The same clips can be imported when they are stored on my hard drive. When I try to import them when stored on a video card, the PRE Video Importer opens and I can bring them into the program this way. However, these are not viable work-arounds for me.
So what has changed – I cannot determine. Is there some setting, codec, or something that I can investigate that would cause this? As I said, this only started happening?
Also, some past projects open correctly and some cannot find the files – even though they are all stored on the same 500g HD.

removeable drive letter
or
set drive letter
or
set usb drive letter
Set it to a letter that you are sure is otherwise NOT used... ie, something other than a camera and/or memory stick you connect via USB

Reinstalling OS from external disc drive

I have an old ibook that I want to give to a friend. The combo drive doesn't respond (spins but doesn't recognize discs) and Its not worth the cost of repair. I do fine with an iomega firewire external optical drive for most things but have been unsuccessful booting my Panther OS disc from it.
any suggestions?

I don't think you can, only via the external optical drive.
You can try a USB though, or install on a external drive, then option boot from it then clone it to the external drive.
