Why wont my iPod show up in iTunes?

When I plug in my iPod, with the charger thing, the chord, a small window comes up with an exclamation mark in a yellow triangle saying, "This iPod cannot be used because the Apple Mobile Device service is not started." What does that mean? I cant download my apps from my computer to my ipod, cant upload things to my iPod from my computer. So what do I do? I don't even know what that means. What's the Apple Mobile Device service? HELP.!!!!!

Place the iOS device in Recovery Mode and then connect to your computer and restore via iTunes. The iPod will be erased.

My device is 6th generation iPod. and i've used my iPod well.
But today, my device was connected with mac book air, and it was recognized as a device on my desktop.
But it doesn't show up in iTunes, I mean on the side bar.
I already restarted my device (resetting too) and my mac air, and my software and my iTunes are new version.

-It's probably running the same iOS id did in the package
-It won't sync (and more importantly update to i0S5)
-It's not a failed/slow sync, the option to sync as well as all other options under "Devices" is Grayed out
-I am running iTunes 11.0.4
-the Belkin cord I am using charges the ipod, and I think it was the one I used to sync it before.

You have a 3G iPod and those can go as high as 5.1.1. What exactly happens when you connect the iPod to your computer and try to update via iTunes? You need iTunes 10,5 or higher on the computer.
After you get it updated see if syncs.

It appears in the download section of my itunes.
I downloaded a season of Iron Man Anime and all of the episodes except episode 1 was downloaded. I looked at the error and it says "error = -50" and when I try to resume downloading, it continues to tell me that there is a download error and it wont resume.
It also says to check my network connection, but I'm connected. So....I'm not sure what to do...this kind of ticks me off.

- Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode

- If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
