This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, or by corruption of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled on some models, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and  Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • Why does my macbook pro "goes to sleep" when charging?

Why does my macbook pro "goes to sleep" when charging? It is working fine without charging but once I attach the charger to my laptop, it just blacks out or goes to sleep mode and I can't wake it up unless I unpluck the charger.
I read from threads that it is a logic board problem....How do I solve this problem?

Try an SMC reset. Follow the method for "a battery you should not remove yourself."

  • Why won't my macbook pro wake from sleep?

My MacBook Pro 13" is awesome.  What is not awesome is that I can't wake it from sleep sometimes.  I have tried pressing keys, trackpad and power button with no success.  When I restart, I get the login screen and it will immediatly go to sleep or it will let me type in the password and then go to sleep.  What is going on here.  I thought that Lion would fix this, but it did not.  Anyone have any suggestions?

Everything seems okay with my computer.  It did not want to wake up 1 time since my last post.  I closed the laptop, let it sit for a few minutes and when I opened it back up it woke up and was fine.  The only thing I can figure is there is something that happens after the laptop has been charging for awhile.  It seems that everytime the computer didn't want to wake from sleep, it had been charging the battery or had just finished charging.  Weird thing to happen.  If you have this problem happen to you, try the steps mentioned earlier in this post (the answer from tjk) will probably fix it.

  • Why doesn't MacBook Pro go to sleep when the battery is empty?

    Hi there!
I was calibrating my MacBook Pro's battery and when I was running the battery down, after the point where the "Low Battery" warning popped up, it ran for 9-10 minutes and the computer just shut down. Let me mention that my battery has no problem lasting for 7 hours. What could be the issue? Is this normal behaviour?

You're just panicing - after there's no more battery reserve left, the Mac will shut down. And if you've a newer MacBook Pro with the unremovable battery, there's no reason to calibrate the battery. See http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1490. As it states:
    "Portables with built-in batteries
Current Apple portable computer batteries are pre-calibrated and do not require the calibration procedure outlined in this article. These computers use batteries that should be replaced only by an Apple Authorized Service Provider."

  • Macbook Pro wake from sleep fails

I am having problems with my Macbook Pro 15" waking from sleep. I was not having these problems until I re-installed OS X a few weeks ago, and now almost everytime I close the lid and take it home from work it will not wake up properly. It appears to be "half" waking as I can just about make out the image on the screen, but the backlight does not come on, and I can not see a pointer so I have to hold the power button and hard reset it.
I have also tried downloading the combo update to 10.6.3 and re-applying that to see if that helped, which it seemed to as I had a few days without a problem, then this morning I took it out to a customers site and it didn't wake up again.
Anyone else having these problems? Anyone got any ideas for a fix?
    I appreciate any help/ideas!!

    Hi there.
Both my wife and I have started having this problem with our MacBooks in the last few weeks. On waking from sleep the screen is black (though in the right light you can see that it's active, just not backlit), and the Mac goes to sleep again within a minor or so. Both Macs are less than a year old.
I discovered a fix by accident: give the machine a sharp nudge once it's awake! Makes me think there might be a problem with the motion sensor, in hardware or software. May disable it if this continues.
    Hi Mike,
I'm not sure this is really a solution to "sharply nudge" or slap your laptops. If the sudden motion sensor is bad, this is something we should be able to diagnose and have Apple repair. But I'm not entirely sure we have the same issue. For starters I have a 240GB SSD drive in mine that should have no sudden motion sensor, if I'm not mistaken.
These are bright, horizontal bolts, that shoot in perpendicular lines. The irony is that I cannot record them on-screen directly, but have to do so using a hand held camera. I also used the "Apple LCD Tester" and the striping does NOT appear on any of the solid images it kicks up.
I have yet to be able to isolate the source of the disruption and (as I mentioned before) it has a brand new logic board and the problem persists.
BTW, it's not my intention to hijack this thread. I think these threads are related and the only reference I've found in all of the discussions is the one mentioned here. I can start a new thread if I've violated protocol.
    Thanks again for everyone's help.

  • Macbook Pro wake from sleep issue in Bootcamp

    Hi,
My MacBook Pro is running 10.7.2 with the latest bootcamp software.
I use Windows 7 while at work and Lion when at home.
The issue I am having is that when I am working in Windows 7 and I put the MBP to sleep by closing the lid and when I wish to start using W7 again I just reopen the lid and everything seems to be fine but what I find is that webpages seem to start hanging.
If I open a constant ping to the default gateway of my laptop (time capsule) I notice that every now and again i will drop packets.
If I do the same on another Macbook no Pings are dropped during the same period so I know its not wireless interfearance or issue with the TC itself.
If I reboot the MBP and start in W7 again all is fine so it seems its only an issue with W7 and waking from sleep.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks
    Gavin

  • Black screen after MacBook Pro wakes from sleep; reason, solution?

    Greetings!
I have 2 MacBook Pro machines; both are running the latest versions of OSX for their age.
The 2 GHz Core Duo is using 10.6.8 (2GB RAM) and 2.5 GHz Duo Core 2 is using the 10.7.x (4GB RAM).
Both are routinely used with external monitors. Every so often when either of the machines are put to sleep, the external monitor disconnected, and finally when the machine is woken, the native screen remains black and unlit. If the machine is connected to the external monitor, it shows its appropriate desktop but the finder bar is unavaible so nothing can be done short of forced shut down and a reboot.
Am I forgetting some simple short cuts (key-bases) to bring the native screen to life or is forced shut-down really necessary?

  • Why does my macbook pro go to sleep when i move it?

I'll be sitting a my desk and decide to slightly move my macbook pro so its facing me a little better and it will go to sleep.
I have a MacBook Pro (retina display) 13-inch, which I bought in February 2014.
It happened both when I had it connected to power and when it was running just off battery.
I was watching youtube videos at the time, and now that I've stopped the problem has gone away.
What would youtube have to do with my macbook going to sleep?
And now I've gone back into youtube and its not doing it anymore, so confused?

  • MacBook Pro goes to sleep when copying files from attached drives

I have noticed that since installing Yosemite my MacBook Pro goes to sleep when it is in the middle of copying a large number of files.  When I wake it up the copying continues.
I have also noticed that when I am watching videos from my shared iTunes library on an Apple TV the video will stop after about 15 minutes and the connection to the library is lost because the MacBook Pro has gone to sleep. When woken up then access to the library is restored but I need to reselect the movie and then resume.
I have changed the power saving options to do not let drives sleep when idle and do not sleep laptop.
Anyone else have any experience of this or better still a fix.
    Thanks in advance.

I have just found that if I turn off the display sleep in the power settings then the problem is resolved.  It means though that the screen on my MacBook Pro is on all the time albeit with a screen saver.

  • How to automatically connect to wi-fi after turning macbook pro on from sleep (without pressing a button!)

Hi there, I was just wondering how to connect to wi-fi as soon as I turn my macbook pro on from sleep mode
The thing is, I constantly have to select the network i want, even though I've already set the location to automatic and even added the network to my preference list..
    What else can i do?
I know a few friends who have the same macbook pro as me but do not have the same problem as me! And even they don't know what to do..

  • I occasionally have issues waking my macbook pro up from sleep mode and have to restart the computer. The apple store replaced the sleep part but the problem is still there

I occasionally have issues waking my macbook pro up from sleep mode resulting in my need to restart the computer. I dislike all of my programs opening at once when I do get the computer started becasue it slows the cpu down. The apple store replaced the sleep part but the problem is still there. Note: i never had this problem with snow leopard

I'm not certain but my new MBA 13...when in sleep mode comes back on from a black screen when I simply click on the left mouse button. Also, one time I did a SECURE EMPTY TRASH on files that totalled more than 1GB and it took so long that the fan kept increasing in speed so I pressed on the POWER button and the MBA shut...I was able to boot up with no problem. As a rule, I now only do secured erases for trash bin data totalling 500mb or less...anything above that gets a regular erase (dump).

  • MacBook Pro won't sleep when charging

My 15" i5 MacBook Pro won't sleep when charging; a reboot of the machine solves the problem temporarily, but it always recurs.  When I close the lid and listen carefully, I can hear hard drive activity; the drive sounds like it keeps spinning up every 10 seconds or so.
This is not an issue when trying to sleep when running on the battery only. Any advice?

    I don't have launch2net installed.
