I would guess it is charging but perhaps not showing that it's doing so.
You can try resetting your iPad by simultaneously pressing and holding the Home and Sleep/Wake buttons until you see the Apple Logo. This can take up to 15 seconds so be patient and don't release the buttons until the logo appears.
Try again to see if the problem persists.

I have an iPad 1 that I have had since introduction. Now I find I cannot update the ios beyond 5.1. This limits the apps I can add, very frustrating. The product works fine and I have faith in it , so why doesn't Apple? Cheap attempt to get one to upgrade.
Come on, Apple, the IOS is free anyway. Is this an admission that your wonderful product(s) have built-in obsolescence?

First, let me make crystal clear I am not speaking for Apple. I am just an Apple user.
I cannot believe you would make such a comment. The iOS does not have a specific charge passed directly on to consumers, but obviously it is far from "free" as Apple has to dedicate considerable time and resources to generate, test, distribute, etc. each iOS version.
Do you really think the earliest versions of all technical products should support the most current versions of all operating systems? Should the Apple Lisa support Mavericks? I don't think so.

How do I update an older IPAD? When I go to update it gives me a message regarding it cannot connect to the apple server, yet internet service is okay.
I have also checked to see if itunes is listed in program to accept through the windows firewall. All of this is good. Any suggestions?

It should be reset to wipe all content from the device and set up as a new device with iTunes. It should update to IOS 7.0.4

The first thing to check is that you have the latest version of iTunes. Running an older version is the most common reason to get a 3194 error.

My iPad has 5.1V OS on it. Can it Be updated to 6.0V OS or higher? If so then how do you accomplish that. also is there a way to find older apps that would work with it??

As Allan suggests it depends on the exact model of iPad you have.
If it does not have a camera, then it cannot be updated past iOS 5.1.1
If it does it can go up to iOS 8.
With that said, you may be able to get compatible versions of Apps for iOS 5 by downloading the App to iTunes on a computer first, then following this support document from Apple:

IPad update: iOS 6.1.3

My iPad says it has an available software update to iOS 6.1.3 however whenever I click to upgrade it says the upgrade is unavailable at this time. I was just wondering why it won't upgrade.

It's probably due to the high volume on the internet today.
Give it some time and try again later.

Configurator, iPads update iOS will no longer connect to network

Managing 30 iPad 4s with Bretford cart, Mac Mini.
On a recent update to iOS 7.0.4, it seems that not all of my iPads took it nicely. Only 3 worked like I expected in fact, and function as they did before. 27 others will no longer connect to the network I had deployed as a package in Configurator. In fact, they went back to the beginning welcome / setup screen for the OS reload.
Is there something that I can try before I just set these all to erase and re-prepare them?

Update: I unplugged all, and manually plugged in one iPad.
I unsupervised, and prepared it again, reloaded all the apps, and got the same result.
Once the iPad shows up in Configurator as prepared, and in my supervised list, it seems good to go: BUT
as soon as I turn it on, it shows me the "Hello" welcome screen, asks to join the network, and seems to freeze. The iPad goes to sleep without it receiving a connection.

Why won't my iPad update

My iPad won't update!!! The newest version and the one I'm trying to get is 7.1.2. The Install now button is there but when I click it it has me enter my passcode then I agree to terms of service (which I think are just stupid because no one reads it) and then it says it's verifying the update. Now it loads for like 30 seconds then stops and a thing pops up saying "software update itnot available at this time. Try again later."
