Why would an empty(?) folder contain 40Gb for 0 items?

I've been trying to back up a network shared hard drive to an external hard drive and occassionally the hourly backup folders turn up empty. When I use Finder to "Get Info" the folder size is listed as "40.7 Gb for 0 items". What I hope this means is that the backup folders aren't truly empty, it's just that the contents are somehow invisible. Can anyone decipher this?
Thanks

Run the #12 OnyX routine here, consider not using software that came with hard drives or what your using any longer, it might have issues or doesn't get updated fast ennough.
Step by Step to fix your Mac
Use TimeMachine or Carbon Copy Cloner or Superduper instead.

Hi Marcel,
one question: Did you receive a device ID (you can see that on the settings page).
If not, run transaction MEREP_PD on the WebAS. (Yes, just run this transaction and you do not need to do anything else). It is necessary to run this step because it will initialise the number range for the Mobile ID for the mobile client to use. For further explanation, check OSS Note 592284.

• Why would Shape Builder not allow Selecting (for a join)?

(As background . . . I ran through Terry White's excellent "10 things" for Illustrator video. I even built the Yin-Yang symbol myself, from scratch, after watching his video. So "I have" succeeded at least once in using Shape Builder.)
But, when I attempt to do . . . pretty much anything of my own design . . . I get stuck within the first minute and just have to quit and walk away. I appologize in advance if anything sounds bad . . . I'm FULLY MAXED OUT on both anger and frustration. Its just inconsolably frustrating how easy it is to get into a "mode" that . . . won't let you go any further.
Imagine drawing a cross. (Like if you took real 4" x 4"'s and made a physical one, and then traced the outline around that.)
I thought I'd draw one long vertical rectangle.
Then draw an overlapping shorter horizontal rectangle.
Then join the two together in Shape Builder so its one "bounded box" with no interior "crossing lines" in the central join.
I drew the two rectangles. Even got them centered vertically using the align button.
I select the Shape Builder and . . . . am immediately hopelessly stuck in one of two modes that won't let me continue further.
#1 (From a fresh "web" document) . . . I hover over the vertical beam (cross hatch appears, and the "+" appears because I'm in Shape Builder Add mode) and . . . cross hatch won't appear as I drag over the horizontal crossbeam.
Or . . . click (and hold) on the crossbeam . . . same thing . . . cross hatch appears, the "+" is there and . . . as I drag to the vertical beam to join . . . it won't go to crosshatch.
Or . . .
#2 (When I was originally trying to add this as part of a larger board) . . . I drew the same two rectangles, then upon choosing Shape Builder . . . I get an Arrow and a Circle with a Slash through it and am not allowed to select anything.
And can't find any sign, in any panel, of any "mode" I'm in (or not in) that would account for why selection is blocked.
I wasn't on the wrong layer (there is only one).
I've tried it (#1) from a new fresh drawing, and (#2) from inside a larger drawing (where I actually need it).
It takes less than 30 seconds from start to . . . . hopelessly blocked from proceeding.
Why wouldn't Shape Builder allow two pieces to join?
Why would Shape Builder show "not allowed to select"?
Thanks,
jkh

See, I'm in Shape Builder . . . Cross Hatch appears.
(Its probably too small on the image, but trust me . . . there is a "+" by the arrow.)
It was so simple on the Yin-Yang Cirle to Teardrop join . . . this is an EVEN SIMPLER image and . . . I'm stuck at step 1.

• So WHY would I want to purchase iOS3 for my 1st gen iPod?

Hi there. I've just upgraded my MacBook hdd and OS X. Now when I plug my 1st gen iPod touch in to sync, it says that there's an iOS 3 available and that 2-4 gen iPods get it for free, but 1st gen have to purchase it.
Unfortunately, my iPod doesn't seem to be syncing without this upgrade. So, either there's something wrong or else they're trying to force me to buy it (though it doesn't ay so). I'm not against purchasing an upgrade if I see the advantages. But as it stands, I'm quite happy with my iPod the way it is. I've looked and looked, but I can't find anything that tells my WHY I would want to purchase an upgrade. Mac support pages are completely vague, just explaining that 1st gen must pay for it.
Any insight into the sitch?

Hi Jolly Giant,
Thanks, but I was hoping for a more subjective, feedback sort of answer.
I did see that Wiki, but it doesn't answer me really. It gives me technical stuff, but nothing that seems to make it stand out from the former iOS's that explains why a user would find it advantageous to purchase it. It includes a little bug fix for this, a little bug fix for that, security upgrades...all stuff standard to regular OS updates that no one should have to pay for. Not why apple would require one to BUY it. (e.g. upgrading from one OS X to a newer one includes pretty obvious new features.) No outstanding new features jump out at me when staring at that dry dry listing of whatnot.
Looking at it again, it seems that it might be useful for an iPhone as an upgrade. But for the iPod touch it seems absurd to force us to buy it.
I've upgraded my iTunes, and NOW it says that my iPod IS up-to-date. Still, it won't sync (although it recognizes my iPod just find.) What is the deal?!

• Why would my iTunes password not work for my iCloud password if I am using the same account?

I recently redownloaded "find my friends" to my iPhone, and tried to log in and couldn't. Now I use my iTunes account with the iCloud also, and I can't access my iCloud account either. My password has never changed for either services, my account ID was not changed or misspelled, and I shouldn't have any other accounts either. Silly me decided that I should to log out of my iCloud and log back in but it won't accept my password. Am I missing something some where along the way? I can still download apps with the password but why can't I log in to my iCloud account anymore? Can I have different passwords with the same account? If so how do I change one with out changing the other also?

As long as you can't spell I wouldn't worry about it.

• Strange thing: "Empty" folder contains many files

A certain application (Deja Vu) has created a folder on my desktop, which the finder claims to have no items but a size of several MBs (info command). Using "ls -al" for this folder in the terminal application reveals all those files as expected. How is this possible? How can I get the finder to show the contents?

Show hidden files in OSX Finder
Open the terminal and type or copy/paste:
defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles -bool true
Reverting to the default of NOT showing hidden files:
defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles -bool false
Restart or Force Quit Finder required to take effect.

Rip the CD into your iTunes library and then sync your iPod.

• Why can't I create property nodes for item in STRICT typedef cluster?

I've tried this in LV7.0/WIN2k and LV 7.1/OSX - both versions work the same.
I have a TYPEDEF consisting of a cluster of items A, B, and C.
I have a front-panel instance of this typedef.
Under certain conditions, I want to disable and gray Item C, because it's not applicable.
So I need a property node connected to item C.
If the typedef is STRICT, then I cannot create such a property node - the menu item to create anything is just not there.
If I change to NON-STRICT, then I can create the property node.
I can change it back to STRICT, and the property node works just fine.
The question is, if the nodes WORK normally, why can I not CREATE one?
If there's some sense behind this, someone please point it out to me...

I agree with you, It would be nice to be able to keep the non strict typedef auto-update and extend it to properities which effect the look of a control. I am not sure why you can change the properities on a strict typedef. A strict typedef should have private properities (can only be changed from within the definition and no public other vi scope for writing these values. I have in the past used a custom control for presentation purposes and contained the structure of the data to be displayed within the typedef cluster. This is not all that automatic since we need vi's to convert between the definition and control. Seperating data structure from presentation is much like XML where the file only contains data structure and a reference to a style for presentation. It would be a very nice option to allow nonstrict typedefs to have an additional auto-update properities which could be toggled on and off. I would be curious to here others opinions on how to keep data structure and presentation consistant across an application without being tied down to a strict typedef (allowing the optional change of teh presentation at runtime).

• Can't Delete Empty Folder in Deleted Items

Running Outlook 2013 on a Windows 8.1 machine. Exchange 2010 on SBS 2011 platform.
I have an empty folder within the deleted items folder. I can manually delete all messages within the deleted items but I cannot get that empty sub folder deleted. My permissions are set to "owner". I'm getting a message that says, "outlook

Please advise.

• Why would a song I purchased from iTunes be ineligible for iTunes match?

Why would two songs I purchased from iTunes be ineligible for iTunes match? Both are part of a total album and the rest were uploaded okay.
Thx
ed

Are they old songs that you may have purchased from a different store id years ago?
If your have old purchased songs that are drm protected and they are not associated with the store id that you are currently using then they will not be eligible.
I would burn to a disc and then rip back to your library.
Burn to the cd. Deletel the old files from your libary and delete the files don't keep them. Rip the cd back.
After you have tested the ripped songs back then empty your trash, or back up the old drm protected songs in a seperate folder.

• Why can't FC save the folder locations set for render files?

I wrongly assumed that when you go to system settings to select the scratch disks (root folder where all the audio and video render folders and files go, capture files, etc.) that Final Cut would save the folder locations within the FC project you are working in. Makes total sense, but for reasons I don't understand, FC does NOT save these folder locations and the result is that I have render files scattered all over the place on my hard drive and it is quite a mess! Fortunately, the project file remembers where it put the render files, so as long as you don't remove or rename any project folders, everything shows up rendered on the time line as it should. The problem is, if I'm working on several projects at once, I have to reset the scratch disks every time I reopen a project, otherwise the program will save it to the last scratch location selected and put all of the render files in another project's folder. I often forget to reset the scratch disks when I'm busy and now I have render files mixed up in various project folders.
Why can't you just set the scratch disks one time when you first set up the project and have the project always remember that location, instead of always having to reset them every time you reopen a project. I love Final Cut, but this is a product defect that should be addressed and corrected. If the project file can remember where it is putting all the render files, it should also be capable of remembering the scratch disk locations you originally selected when you first set up the project or better yet, save it to the project's root folder by default. Am I missing something here?

As MtD describes, FCP sets file locations for ALL projects at the system level. It may help to organize things this way so your files don't end up scattered across multiple locations.
Save the project files to your User folder on the boot drive.
For all the other files FCP creates, set them on a non-boot drive similar to this:
Media Drive
----->FCP Documents
---------->Autosave Vault
---------------->Acme Widgets Demo (sample project name)
---------------->Grass Valley Music Video (sample project name)
---------------->Jen's Wedding (sample project name)
---------->Audio Render Files
---------------->Acme Widgets Demo (sample project name)
---------------->Grass Valley Music Video (sample project name)
---------------->Jen's Wedding (sample project name)
---------->Capture Scratch
---------------->Acme Widgets Demo (sample project name)
---------------->Grass Valley Music Video (sample project name)
---------------->Jen's Wedding (sample project name)
----------->Render Files
---------------->Acme Widgets Demo (sample project name)
---------------->Grass Valley Music Video (sample project name)
---------------->Jen's Wedding (sample project name)
----------->Waveform Cache
Of course, you can choose to keep renders or the Autosave Vault folder on other drives ... just keep them off your boot drive. It may not be the way you're use to working, but it's worked well for me the past 14 years. When you finish with a project and ready to delete the associate files, just go to your media drive and delete folders bearing the project's name.

• Why does empty folder reappear on desktop in XP when I use Save As command

I'm running XP_SP3 with Firefox 8.0.1. I had an empty folder on my desktop named "D E M O " which I used to use for downloads. I moved it to another HD on my system and deleted it from the desktop.
Now, any time I DL ANY type of file with Firefox, that folder reappears on the desktop as soon as I hit File, Save As. I tested this out with IE6. IE6 does not recreate the folder.

you hit it on the nail. i had suspected such a thing, but the folder was always empty when it reappeared. however, that was the answer. I thought i had told it to always ask. But, since it was always downloading straight to the desktop, i was reluctant to accept that as an answer. Sureenough,however, I HAD told it to DL there, even though it wasn't. So, it seems to be fixe. And, no, that wasn't a silly question. A silly question would have been something like, "did you smear peanut butter on your CPU before the incident? Thanks anyway. You were smarter than a whole lot on netusers, and now, so am I, again, just like the good old days when folks actually tried to help each other out instead of selling adware.

Was in the History to get to a site I visited earlier this morning, but it is claiming that I visited a handful of sites from a training that I took last week.
Since it was a site I have been to, I no longer suspect anything suspicious. Why would Firefox tell me that I've visited sites today that I haven't?
This was on a Mac computer with Firefox v20.

• Would synchronizing with an empty folder delete what's on my zen xt

Hi,
I'm having problems transfering my songs from my zen xtra to my pc (long overdue backup). It stalls midway through the process saying there is not enough disk space (despite having 250GBs free!)
The only thing I'm yet to try is synching my player with a folder. I've downloaded the zen synch manager and have wmp0 to synch also. However, I'm concerned that synching with an empty folder will delete all my songs.
I'm running on the original 60GB Zen Xtra firmware and have mediasource organizer 5.
Any help would be HUGELY appreciated.
THanks
Tom
