Why would Finder become sluggish all of a sudden?

My computer is two years old. Not my first or only Mac yet I am having trouble with the Finder. I noticed about a week or so ago that I could not sync with MobileMe but at the same time, switching apps started taking a long time. Opening apps and even making menu choices sometimes gets the spinning wheel.
It is an irregular problem. It can happen with a minimum of apps open. It is apparent even after restarting. I have had to force quit the beta Safari and iTunes 8.1.1. Other apps seem to work fine but typing email or in Pages sometimes stalls. I have a floating Activity Monitor that often shows little to no activity yet the system is slow. I have turned off the Airport utility thinking I was syncing way in the background but it still happened. (iDisk is not on and I have never had problems with the Back to My Mac feature.)
I have run disk utility and reworked my permissions/checked my disk/rebooted. All seems in order. I have used IceClean to clear my cache and such with no noticeable effect either way.
Would some more intelligent minds have an answer?

I'm going to assume it has something to do with the new HP driver I installed 2 weeks ago. I have uninstalled it.

There could be a number of reasons, first thing to check is if you are clicking Command + or Command -. The Command 0 keystrokes restore Safari to the actual size. You can also reset Safari by Safari - Reset.

I would like to add that Comcast is my internet provider. Perhaps that is part of the issue although the Connection Doctor confirms the mail box is connecting to the internet. No other function processes when Connection Doctor program is used to find the source of the issue. I have read forum posts but am unable to find a way to get my Apple mail to be delivered to my computer. It worked fine up until I chose to transfer mail to the Cloud. My mail account is a .mac account.
Still hoping someone out there can help me.

Why would find my iPhone ring if I didn't initiate it?

I'm worried...why would my iPad ring with the find my iPad feature if I didn't initiate the find my iPhone feature?

I also had the same thing happened to my 4S, and my sister's 4. It happened to the both of us within one week apart. There are scattered posts about this bug on the internet. It seems that its happening more to AT&T subscribers. It's definitely a bug!

Why can't I print all of a sudden? - Can you suggest?

I have networked a printer through my new airport extreme.
Everything "had" worked fine. I was able to print wirelessly with my Macbook and a hardwired PC. It has been several weeks since I've tried printing.....and it won't work? I have no idea what happened!
The PC just stops and says printing error. The Macbook gets to 29% in print status and just sits there...?????
Can anyone please give me some suggestions on what to check? I would think it's not a computer problem since two computers are having trouble. Is there some type reset function to try?

I got it working, but I don't believe I can explain how! Unplugged things a few times. Was able to print a simple word doc, but it took about 3 minutes!! Even though I had a full signal and a green light, I wasn't able to get on the internet either.
All of a sudden the internet worked and I was able to print a page much faster>>???
Don't understand what was going on, but it works now.

Why does my memory stick all of a sudden trigger the message "The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer"?

I bought a LaCie memory stick a couple of months ago. It worked fine. Now all of a sudden I get the message "The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer". What has happened? Is all my data lost? Can I retrieve it? I tried to fix it with Disk Utility (which at least correctly recognises the stick), and even though I can click on my memory stick I can't do anything to it. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

According to an ASC member who claims to work for HP, this issue can be resolved by repairing the permissions of the startup volume in Disk Utility. I can't confirm, but it has apparently worked in at least one case.

Why would a JSP output all data but fail to end the request?

I have a JSP which outputs some data, includes a servlet in the same application which outputs table rows, and then outputs the end of the page. I'm running iAS 6 SP4 on Solaris with iWS 6.0.
My problem is that requests complete successfully and output all data but the page continues to "load": it renders in the browser window, says Opening .... in the progress bar, but never finishes. When I stop the request and view the HTML, everything is there, right down to the last tag. So both the JSP and servlet are running to completion, but somewhere the request is not being terminated.
This is a problem because iAS will not serve any further requests to that specific application until the server is restarted. It will continue to serve pages to other applications on the same server. When shutting down the following errors are put to the log file:

Things are always clearer in the light of morning. Passing false for the inline argument to PDEContainerCreate() is the cause.

Why would Finder report a 13 TB Backups.backupdb on a 3 TB drive

I’m backing up a lot of data with Time Machine but when I checked the file size of my backup it says that the Backups.backupdb is 13.03 TB yet my drive is only 3 TB. Does anyone have any idea why I’m getting such and inaccurate size?

HFS Compression isn't yet really a visible function for the average user. It's very low-level, and is applied when items are written to suitable drives only if the application initiating the copy or move (in your case, Time Machine) specifically requests HFS Compression. It's not a case of having a whole filesystem that is set up to compress anything written to it; rather, you can apply HFS Compression on a file-by-file basis. It's only available in OS X 10.6+, and only on HFS-formatted volumes; any files so compressed will be unrecognized in earlier versions.
Whilst I can't guarantee that Time Machine uses HFS Compression, in the event that it did it's unlikely that one week's worth of data could amount to 13TB, as you say.
So, I'm afraid, as they say on Dragon's Den: I'm out. Maybe someone else will be of more help.

Dock utilities will function. Had permissions issues. Not certain that all of those have not been sorted out. Sensitive (non-backed-up) is contained on the drive.
What terminal operations could I run in order to provide the necessary info for recommendations?
I have:
   run fsck -fy from
      install disc
      single-user
      After log-in
   Run disk utility
        Install disc
        Single-user
   Reinstalled SL
   Created image of hd using disc utility
       Concerned that I will not be able to access this data due to the improper permissions

According to your description, you get high CPU usage when commenting out the calculated member formulas. Right?
With your information, we are not sure this is a MDX Query performance issue or the BIDS issue.  We suggest you optimize your MDX query and diagnose the Formula Engine performance. Please refer to the links below:

If possible, please post some screenshots or detail information about calculated member formulas so that we can have some deep analysis.

Why is it doing this in imovie and how can I fix this?
I used mov and mp4 and they bot h did this. I made 2 other videos last night and it didn't od this. This one did.

That the Video freeses can have many origins. Most common is:
- less than 5Gb free space on internal hard disk
- use of external hard disk that is formatted FAT32 /DOS/UNIX/Mac OS Exchange
should be: Mac OS Extended or Mac OS Extended (journaled)
- other background processes running: Screen/Energy savers, photo as desktop
backgroud - even worse if it changes every 5th second
If You got > 25Gb free, no ext. hard disk and a clean desktop:
Deleting iMovie pref file - should help

Can't find airplay icon all of the sudden

Apple TV mirroring suddenly stopped working. I have two iPod touches, one iPad and Apple TV. All the latest generations. I have been using airplay with no problem and now for some reason I can't find the airplay icon on any device. I have restarted, reset everything and unplugged the Internet connection. Apple TV can communicate with the iTunes but is not recognizing home sharing with my computer either...

Has anything changed in your set upor have you got a new household appliance that could be interfereing with the mirror signal.
Also when you rebooted everything did that include the router and did you take all cables from ATV for 30 seconds?

Basic troubleshooting:
1) Quit all open Apps: double-click the Home button. Hold one of the apps in the Switcher bar until they begin to wiggle. tap the red minus in the corner of each app until they are all gone.
2) reset your phone: hold botht eh Home and Sleep buttons for about 10 seconds. If the "Slide to turn off" slider appears, ignore it. Keep holding the buttons until the screen goes black, then the Apple logo appears. (note, this will NOT affect any data on your phone, it;s more like a hard reboot)

Why has the sound gone all of a sudden after installing the new iOS 5.0.1?

I have had the iPhone 4s since the time it was released in the uk, u had no problems with it, it's network coverage was pretty good, the loudness of the speakers was good ad the battery would last me an entire day, now after installing the new ios 5.0.1, my sous has gone, I can't hear the music playing, I can't here te clicks and the tap sounds when touching the phone, the only time it makes sound is when I make a call and I can put it on loud speaker, other than that there's no sound coming from te loud speaker, oh yeah Siri seems to be working fine. Do aby of you people know what's wrong and if any of you lot are going through the same problem or any other problems since tbe update to ios5.0.1, apple you need to get this sorted as the speaker is important to some of us if not all and it would be great if you could sort this out and any other problems caused by this update and to allow the phone to work and operate the way it should, thanks!

Hi Guys, I FIXED IT!!!!
I have post eariler on this forum and as you know I have the same problem, I have tried all the things listed here and nothing was perminant in fixing this painful iphone hating problem.... and failed. But I need to happily say that I now have the fix!!!! This worked for me and I fixed it by myself so you don't need to go to apple or service centre or anything.
Ok I like so many of you here truly believed this was as IO5 issue as it only dropped the sound on the speakers once that IO5 update came along. I tried a bunch of reset, reboots, home clicks, lock and unlocks, to fix this and all failed. some worked for an hour but then failed. hours of my life that I will never get back.   but since I have learnt this is not a IO5 problem but a hardware issue! ... and in paticualar is has to do with your bottom connection. Your phone is thinking it is docked all the time.
To fix the no sound problem what you need is...
1. a torch
2. a tooth brush
3. methalated spirits
4. a butter knife
Step 1.
get your torch and shine it down the bottom connection plate to see what kind of dust, sand, hair or anything you have stuck in there.   all that need to be removed! everything! it might look clean but still thats ok go to step 2.
step 2.
Turn on your music app and put the speakers on! If your phone is like mine it should not work. you most probably don't even have the volume display to turn it on but its ok, just do it! and it should still play with no sound.   its important you try and run the speakers as this will show you that it is a hardware problem.
step 3.
Dip your tooth brush into some methated sprits.   then at your sink tap the exess metho out of your brush as you just want the brushes to be slightly damp, not soaking wet and then scrub the bottom connetiors on your iphone. work the brush back and forward in a way that scoops the dirt out of the phone, not just pushing it side to side.
(As you bushing you should notice the volume bar come back on or off as you scub.   This happened to me and that is how I realised I was on the right track to fixing this problem as I was doing something external that was actually controling when the volume display came on or off.   but once I cleaned it this still didn't fix the problem...)
Step 4.
Use the back side of a butter knife (not the sharp side) to gently slide over the connectors on the iphone. Do this gently as you are only pushing down on the tiny metal contect bars and you should notice the volume display come on again. slide it back and forward. Now the area of interest is about 2/3 along the connection plate to the right.   This is the area that has the infomation sent when your iphone thinks its docked.
This has worked for me and I have not had a problem since I did this 2 weeks ago.   I have since learnt that the new IOS 5 has activated a different part of the bottom conectors. if you have been using dodgy connectors or unapproved apple cables (as I was) any damage or hair and dirt on the terminal this is effecting it. Try it.   just remember if you can do something external to your phone then there lies the problem.

MBP extremely sluggish all of a sudden. Simple actions like closing browser results in spinning rainbow. Any suggestions.

I turned my 2010 MBP Mountain Lion, i7 8gb RAM on today and it stuck on the apple screen with a spinning load icon. I read an article that said to reinstal OS and all files should be fine. I reinstalled and now I can boot, but it is very slow. The slightest action results in spinning rainbow and usually takes several moments to confirm and execute. I verified and repaired this HD but nothing seems to be wrong. I checked and my memory is reading all 8 gig. I am at a loss. I would assume that maybe the HD is circling the drain, but don't want to fear the worst. Does anyone have experience with this issue, and could you offer advice.

Thank you for your time and help. I don't feel like this is a performance based issue like the site you suggested is geared at. My device was screaming fast prior to me closing the lid and leaving for a few hours. Free space isn't the issue, and I run a very clean machine with as little as possible running in the background to boost performance. I was just grasping at straws when I posted this. I will try a clean install tomorrow and see if that solves the issue. I was lucky thaat I was able to get most of my files off of the HD.
