Why would iTunes automatically change track info?

I played a track in my iTunes library (purchased directly from band, not iTunes) which I have played many times over the last two years.  This time, however, the track suddenly disappeared from my sort view immediately after I clicked on it and as it was playing.  When I located it, I saw that the album name had changed from the album that I had purchased to a compilation album that the track had appeared on years ago (thus the resorting), and other track info had been altered as well.  This also happened for another track that I clicked on from the same album.  All other tracks on the album were unaffected when I played them.  How is it possible for iTunes to alter track info, particularly for music I have not purchased from iTunes?

I suspect iTunes is revealing "corrections" made by Windows Media Player. If so the damage is done and you'll probably find other tracks have been affected over time.

  • Making iTunes automatically change track info of playlists

    Hello all,
I'd like to know if there is a way to automatically change song info of all the tracks in a specific playlist.
More specifically, I'd like to know how to make itunes automatically change the Grouping of songs as I add or remove them from any given playlist.
Ultimately, what I'd like to be able to do is see which songs are set to sync with my iPhone and which aren't when I'm looking through my entire music library.
Maybe there's a solution using Automator or Applescripts. I tried using smart playlists, but those seem to only be able to populate a playlist based on track info, which is the opposite of what I want to do.
Thank you all in advance for your help,
    Scott

  • Why is iTunes automatically changing my genre metadata?

    MacBook Pro 15-inch, Mid 2012
Processor: 2.6 GHz Intel Core i7
    Memory: 8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M 1024 MB
    Software: OS X 10.9.3 (13D65)
    iTunes 11-2-2 (3)
    64-bit
Why is iTunes automatically changing my genre metadata?
For the past couple months I’ve noticed that iTunes has been changing genre information in my music library.  This is a problem because I’ve spent the past decade tweaking the metadata in my iTunes Library to be exactly the way that I want it (particularly with genre and grouping information).
I have a very large iTunes library and I’ve changed genre and grouping info for organizational reasons.  When iTunes changes the genre of my music, it’s effecting my smart playlists and causing a domino effect of mis-organization.  Tracks and albums are popping up in multiple genres, and things are getting disorganized very quickly.
I suspect that iTunes is changing the genre info of my purchased music back to how it appears in the iTunes store and that this is going to be a new ongoing Apple issue that is quietly ignored.  If that’s the case, then I would like some feedback from other users who may have some helpful advise to disconnect iTunes from the mother ship of the iTunes Store.  If this is the way it’s going to be, then I’ll simply stop buying music from iTunes and try to use iTunes as a stand alone music player (if possible).  If that is NOT possible, then I’ll be looking into moving my entire music library to different software and completely removing myself from iTunes.  After a decade of loving iTunes, that would obviously be a shame, but losing control of my library is a deal breaker.
    Any assistance is greatly appreciated.
    Other notes/observations:
-I am NOT using iTunes Match
    -Genius is turned OFF
-Tracks being automatically edited is music that has been purchased from the iTunes Store
-Not all tracks purchased from the iTunes Store is being automatically edited
-If I Command-Info a track that has been edited by iTunes, the metadata changes back to what I had changed it to.  But ONLY when I Command-Info or play the track.  Otherwise the track stays lost in it’s reversed genre and the track disappears from smart playlists that it’s included in.

Yep, others are seeing the same thing and I have not seen a solution posted yet.

  • Why does Itunes automatically change the genre of my songs?

Why does Itunes automatically change the genre of my songs? I have assigned specifit genres but they're constantly changed without me doing it. ITs annoying. Does anyone know how i can stop this?

    welcome to the discussions
you may find that WMP is doing this for you.
There is a setting is WMP that means that it checks the info held in the file (and shown by itunes) against that held at Gracenote and 'updates' the info where there is any disagreement. On my copy its under the 'media library' tab.
Turn this off if its on.

  • ITunes Automatically Changing Song Info

Recently (I'm not sure how recently because this hasn't been happening with all songs) every time I double click or play a song in my iTunes library, most of the info changes. Usually the artist or the date but the changes are rarely correct and always throw my songs out of order. What it also appears to be doing is changing the artist into the writer of the song which in some cases is up to 4 artists. This is getting incredibly frustrating and I've been unable to find any other cases of this happening.
Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated.
    PS.
This is a relatively new install of OS X and it was happening on my previous install as well.

As far as I'm aware iTunes doesn't have any automated media info. update feature (unlike Windows Media Player for example). Could it be that another application is responsble for the changes? Each time you access a track in iTunes it compares the current value of the tag with that stored in the library, and updates the library if required. The changes to the tags could all have been made some time ago but it's only when you access the files that they would come to your attention.

  • Why is iTunes automatically changing edited song and album information?

Hi guys, I've seen this question asked several times but I haven't seen an answer or advice that specifically relates to the problems I've been having with my iTunes library of late.
I've got a pretty big collection of music on iTunes - almost 1000 albums - and I'm pretty anal about the way it's stored and managed and I regularly change the song and album information to suit my own "house style". All my music was stored on a Dell laptop and was fine - I had no problems with changing and editing the information. I recently bought a MacBook Pro and shifted all the music files from the old machine onto the new one (a lengthy and frustrating process) and since then, I've had a lot of hassle in terms of amending and organising my iTunes collection. A lot of the music I've purchased from the iTunes store has reverted back to its original state, no matter how many times I've changed it.
    For example:
Lana Del Rey's Born to Die (Deluxe Version). I've removed the "Deluxe Version" from the title but I quit iTunes or sync it with my iPod, it automatically adds it back. I've changed the information in the song info, I've even changed it in the sort info just to be sure, but it always changes back.
The same with the Anthems Electronic 80s compilation. I want to call it Ministry of Sound: Electronic 80s and remove it from Various Artists (by deleting the album artist from the information). But after iTunes is quit or its been synced, the same thing happens. It appears as two albums on my iPod - a handful of tracks appear under the old title while the bulk of them appear under the new one.
It's happening across loads of albums, all ones I've downloaded (the stuff ripped from CDs seems to be okay). I've done as much as I can in terms of the song info but no matter what I do, it just reverts back when the programme's quit or I sync my iPod. I don't know if it's anything to do with the fact they're in the Cloud or they've been imported from a Dell laptop or there's an underlying problem with iTunes (a couple of posts elsewhere on this forum suggest it might be the case) but it's really frustrating.
I apologise for the length of my post but I wanted to be as thorough as possible to outline the problem. If anyone's in a position to offer me any advice, I'd be hugely grateful!

A handful of others have complained about this recently.  Seems to happen to iTunes Store purchases only.  Somehow they are connecting back to the Store and refreshing label information.  There may be a solution but few seem to try experimenting with settings to see if something stops it.
2014 discussion about edited tags for Store purchases reverting to originals - https://discussions.apple.com/message/26077896 - edited tags are still present in the media file but revert to the originals in the iTunes library file. Workaround is to refresh tags so media file tags are re-read and used in library file.
Until then send feedback to Apple:

  • Why would iTunes 9.2.1.5 automatically DELETE my iPod's entire music library???

    Hi everyone,
I have an iPod Classic running software ver 1.3.  I keep (kept) my entire music library on the iPod rather than on my laptop.  I've used the iPod this way for nearly 5 years now.  This morning I connected the iPod to my Windows Vista laptop, running iTunes 9.2.1.5, which I do almost every day.
Today was unusual.  When iTunes started up, it told me it was "syncing your iPod," then DELETED everything in my iPod's music library which wasn't purchased on the iTunes website.  Because I only bought a handful of songs from iTunes, this reduced my music library from 25 Gigs to a little less than 15 Megs.  Then iTunes crashed.
Why would iTunes DO this???  I feel like I've been mugged.  That library took years to collect and organize and I don't have access to a lot of the original sources.  The worst part of it all is I had no inkling nor warning that anything was amiss until it was all too late.  And why would iTunes spare only what I'd purchased from the iTunes store???  Is this some sick way of ensuring Apple is the sole gateway to our music access?
             Beyond frustrated,
                      - Red Apples Only

It sounds like your iPod did an automatic sync. Whether or not you had it set up that way or not I'm not sure. Anyway, when your iPod automatically syncs it makes sure your iPod MATCHES your iTunes library. If you have no songs in your library (because "I keep (kept) my entire music library on the iPod rather than on my laptop") then it will delete all the songs on the iPod to match the iTunes library. The only exception is that it will copy any iTunes purchased songs from your iPod back to your computer as a way of safe-keeping your iTunes purchased songs.
As a side note, there are way too many people on this forum that don't keep their library on their computer (25 Gigs doesn't take up that much room) or at least store it on an external hard drive (they're cheap). Too many things can happen to your iPod such as; theft, damage, malfunction, or your experience that not keeping a back-up copy is risking losing a "library that took years to collect and organize". I know that I have all the CDs that make up my 31,000 song library that are all on my iPod Classic but I still keep them on my computer AND my backup hard drive. I know if I lost my iPod I really wouldn't want to rip all those CDs again, not to mention hunting down missing artwork.

why does iCal automatically change the date of the entry i am making to the day before??
for example, when i am attempting to make a 'all-day' appointment on october 2nd 2011, it automatically shifts it to october 1st.
but if i am doing a timed appointment for only a few hours, it will allow me to put it on that day.
i am trying to put in travel dates so any help on how to fix this, would be greatly appreciated.

    alsdman,
Quit iCal, and try removing the com.apple.iCal.plist file from your Macintosh HD/Users/yourusername/Library/Preferences Folder. Since that Library is now hidden, you have to use the Finder>Go Menu>Depress the "Option" key>Library. Drag the .plist file to your desktop, and log out/in or restart and check iCal for functionality.
Also go to System Preferences...>Language & Text>Formats>Region: and set/re-set the appropriate "Region."

  • ITunes burned CD track info does not show in another mac.

iTunes burns a CD of imported LPs.  Track info was entered with Audacity, saved as aiff and then imported into iTunes .  The track info shows up in my car CD player but not another mac.  Any suggestions?

Update: after trying 6 discs that failed, the next few worked fine. Both iTunes and Finder displayed the actual disk name and track names. However, going back to the previously failed disks did not change the outcome. They still failed. That worked for another 6 or so disks, then this morning I ran across another one that got looked up in iTunes, but not in Finder.

how do i get itunes to keep track info on cds i burn in itunes?

Audio CDs do not contain track information. For commercial CDs this information is supplied by the Gracenote service (see below).  Each computer gets this information for a particular CD from this service, it isn't on the CD.  You would have to register your CD with Gracenote.  In my opinion this is a bit much for a personal CD that only a few computers in the world will ever see, but I guess unless they block it then you can do it.

I have two Airport Expresses running at my house. Both are connected to different types of speakers. Neither speaker set has its own equalizer, and both require a different EQ setting to sound just right. Does anyone know of a way to have iTunes automatically change its EQ setting based on which Airport Express it is streaming to?

I'm in the same boat. I have a 6 zone amplifier running with 6 airport expresses to different rooms inside and outside the house. Each has it's own acoustic characteristics. I'd really love to be able to set each airport to equalize based on my SPL frequency sweep I did for each room.
Setting the eq in itunes won't do it as that is global plus I have many more sources for auiod other than itunes that use the AEs directly.

  • Change track info in iTune and affect the ones in iPod Touch? (bug?)

When I change my album names in iTune (or any other info), they aren't affected in my iPod Touch (for example in my iPod I have multiple folders for the same album, which I desperately try to change), what to do?

  • Genius is evil - madly changing track info in the background

I think I've figured out why iTunes, starting in version 8, has been behaving strangely. It's Genius.
I started out noticing that when double-clicked a song in the list view to play that it would jump to the end of that album's list. This drove me nuts. If I double-clicked each song, it would do this for each and then i could play the album how I wanted. I thought maybe it was tinkering with the track number info but couldn't find anything different.
Then I started playing songs that I didn't have album, album artist, or composer information for and saw that once I played it, iTunes immediately updated to show me this information filled in. Now I was mad, b/c in a lot of instances the album information was some screwy greatest hits or tribute album. It finally dawned on me when I played a song and saw a foreign language soundtrack show up in the album field. Genius was filling in my missing information with information from how other users have classified that track. Yikes!
So I've disabled Genius, but the damage is done as soon as Genius does that analysis of your library.
Anyone have any thoughts on this? I'm going to wipe my library and reimport everything, hoping that iTunes hasn't written the changes to the tag but only in the library. I wish Genius behaved more intelligently...
Can someone confirm that Genius is changing/adding track info where it perceives mine is missing or incorrect?

I had the same problem! I realized it today and googled my problem. I guess Zune is just really dumb at figuring out song information. I noticed it today when I had 42 new Rihanna tracks in my library. Apparently Zune took several songs that had nothing from Track 1 (etc), Unknown Artist and Album as its song information and changed it to some random album by Rihanna and did the tags completely excluding the Tracks. I have NO idea how it came to that conclusion as the songs were actually Soca music from Trinidad! FAR from Rihanna!!
Other than that, sadly, I like Zune software better than iTunes on my Vista machine. The visualizer is the part that gets me. It's great for just playing music and I have something better to look at than just some seizer causing fullscreen lines. I have dual monitors and the full screen visualizer acts as if its a background so its sexii

  • Help! iTunes automatically changes my song tags.

Hey, when I add new songs to my iTunes library, iTunes automatically updates the tags giving it its own album artist, album, track numbers, etc. I personally find this very annoying and sometimes forces my library to become very unorganized. Any help in fixing this? Any option to just turn off the auto update of song tags?
    Thanks!

    Hi,
I still have this problem. I have two PCs, both of them have Vista (though different versions) and exactly the same version of iTunes. On one PC, iTunes automatically updates tags, on the other it doesn't. And right now tags are only changed when I play a song in iTunes. It drives me crazy. A few observations and speculations:
There may be a process running (outside iTunes) which checks the properties of an MP3 file played by iTunes and adds certain tags which are not present. Unlikely, but impossible?
The properties you see when you check the file info are taken from the iTunes Music Library.xml file and not from the MP3 file itself. If you look at the file properties in Windows Explorer, you can sometimes see that it can have information for ID3 tags which is not visible in iTunes. When the information is added in iTunes, it is taken from the MP3 file tags and added to the xml file, I think. This means that when you delete the tags from the MP3 file itself, using TagScanner, for instance, it is impossible for iTunes to add it to the xml file and display it in iTunes. I've been experimenting with this and it seems to work.
If the above is true, the question remains why iTunes adds or updates tag information when I have explicitly forbidden it to do that by disabling all the options mentioned here. I still have no clue. Anyone else?

I am using Itunes on a Windows XP SP2 computer. When I attempt to change specific info on tracks in my library (Right Click>Get Info) some of the tracks have all catagories grayed out and I can't edit them. Why is this and how do I change it?

I like WMC too, but the same thing with WMP, it just completely messes everything up. I know I can turn the organise feature off, but I just don't want to risk it again. Last time it messed up about 10% of my library and that was out of about 10,000 songs.
