Why would my iMac suddenly run slowly out of nowhere?

Earlier this evening, I was just clicking on a song to upload it to tumblr, and my iMac froze. I had to hold "power" and restart it. After I logged in, my desktop failed to load completely (the menu bar was conspicuously absent and I had about six pictures saved to my desktop and the thumbnails were not showing up for any of them). After several restarts (I tried starting it in safe mode and hitting CommandOption+PR and neither did anything to help the problem)
I waited after the last time I restarted the computer, and after about fifteen to twenty minutes, my Mail icon started bouncing. I have it set to open at login so apparently it took about fifteen minutes for it to actually start opening. Now, simply moving the mouse freezes my computer for about three minutes. It ends up taking me about twelve minutes to position the mouse over an icon, click on it once to select it and click on it again to open it. As you can imagine, this makes it VERY difficult for me to do any of the normal tasks one might do in a situation like this (repair permissions, etc.)
This happened completely out of the blue. Up until this point, my iMac has operated almost perfectly aside from one incident several weeks ago that turned out to be a problem with my router. I just don't understand why this would happen out of nowhere, and as you can imagine I am very concerned. What would cause this to happen, and is there anything that can be done to fix it?
Thank you all in advance.

All right, I followed your instructions...I had to click Verify Disk first because Repair Disk was grayed out. The problem is, I got an error that says:
"First Aid Failed.
Disk Utility stopped verifying "Macintosh HD" because the following error was encountered:
Filesystem verify or repair failed."
Then, in the Disk Utility window it says:
"Verifying Volume 'Macintosh HD'
Checking Journaled HFS Plus volume.
Checking Extents Overflow file.
Checking Catalog file.
Invalid sibling link
Volume check failed.
Error: Filesystem verify or repair failed."
I'm trying to again right now...now in the Disk Utility window it says:
"Verifying Volume 'Macintosh HD'
Checking Journaled HFS Plus volume.
Checking Extents Overflow file.
Checking Catalog file.
Invalid node structure
The volume Macintosh HD needs to be repaired.
Error: filesystem verify or repair failed."
Now, I am confused because I literally CANNOT repair the disk, since that option is unavailable. What are some other options?
Also, just figured I'd throw this out there...I am not opposed to reinstalling Leopard even if it means I will lose everything on my computer. I have all of my important files backed up on my external hard drive.
Thank you for your suggestions - even though this did not work, I feel like this might help me narrow down the problem somewhat. Maybe you can clarify what all of these error messages mean.

Why would my iMac (less than one year old) suddenly start freezing?  This is the 3rd time in a week.  Thanks for any help.

Other than the ones that came on the computer I've only added Quicken and MahJong game.  I was looking at some other questions and I guess I should have put more info about Mac in my question. I am running OSX Mavericks 10.9.2   Computer purchase new in May, 2013.

  • Why Would My Mac Suddenly Run Slow?

For two days now my Mac is just "crawling." I haven't added anything.
Everything was OK before about 2 days ago.
Is this common? Is it a temporary issue? I hope so.

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
    4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return  three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report what happened. No harm will be done.
    12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
    14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

  • Why would my iphone suddenly lose charge rapidly (6-7%/hr) with no use

Why would my iphone suddenly lose charge rapidly (6-7%/hr) with no use?

I had the same problem with my iPhone 5 AFTER I had upgraded to IOS.
Did a good deal of searching on this site and others and found that the main advice being given was to turn off all apps that are running in the background (From the home screen double press the home button and a visual list of all apps running in the background will appear. To turn them off simply swipe your finger upwards on each).
Found that this definitely solved my problem and now make sure I do this every time I use the phone.
    Hope this helps

  • IMac Suddenly Running Slow

The last few days my late 2012 iMac is running really slow. I'm running the latest Mavericks version. If I reboot its fine for a while, but then will suddenly slow down for no apparent reason. Looking in Activity Monitor there appears to be plenty of Idle CPU and Memory even while the iMac is crawling along, almost unusable to do even the simplest of tasks. I have 32GB RAM, and 45GB free hard drive storage.
I have been running Backblaze for a couple of months (process bzfilelist) and that hasn't noticablly been slowing things down before. I have taken system details using EtreCheck (see below.) I was importing photos using Aperture at the time these details were taken - Aperture took over an hour to import the photos whereas it would usually have taken 5 mins, and the machine was so slow it was virtually unusable during the process, so something is slowing the machine down drastically.
Any help would be appreciated! Thanks.

Your issue may be caused by back blaze. I would disable and uninstall it however first get yourself an external HD and use Time Machine or create a bootable clone using either CCC or SuperDuper. If the performance returns then  you have determined the issue is back blaze.
You can also use Activity Monitor and see what processes may be taking up large percentages of CPU time. You can find AM in Applications - Utilities - Activity Monitor.
    Good luck.

  • Hi, I have a iMac Tiger running slowly, how can I make it run faster?

Hi, I have a iMac Tiger 10.4.11 running slowly, how can I make it run faster?

Look at what is happenning with your Mac when you run Activity Monitor.
    Macintosh-HD -> Applications -> Utilities -> Activity Monitor
Click on the CPU tab on the lower half of the window to see how much time you are using.
Click on System Memory to get statistics on memory usage.  You should have some free memory.
When you have lots of page outs more memory will be helpful.  My entry for entry for Page ins/outs is:
    Page ins/outs: 29163/0
Notice I have 0 pageouts which says that I am not using my harddrive for extra memory space.  Thus, I have enough memory.
Activity Monitor has a neat feature where it can display a dynamic dock icon.  In Activity Monitor View > Dock icon > Show cpu history.
"Reading system memory usage in Activity Monitor :"

  • Why would share via iMessage be left out Of the share menu?

As a primary feature of ios why is sharing via iMessage being left out? Currently I am sharing to camera roll and then firing off an iMessage. Just seems like the fat could be trimmed on this one. I also see iPhoto for ios as bieng a comPlete replacement for the camera roll.

I couldn't agree more. There needs to be iMessage/message integration with iPhoto. I want to be able to share an iPhoto  pic via iMessage! Also I feel the same way about iPhoto replacing the camera app/roll. Needs to be one location to edit photos and store them so we can eliminate duplicates, ect.

  • IMac suddenly running VERY slowly

My 3 yr old iMac has suddenly started running very slowly. from boot up (10 minutes)  onwards.  Every action seems to result in multi coloured spinning wheel and sometimes blue spinning wheel. No anti virus loaded, plenty of memory and space on HD, No recent new applications, no cpu grabbers Have tried Mac general solutions (Safe Boot etc)  - no change.  Have removed a couple of apps - no change - HELP!!!  Any ideas.

    Hi ..
Remove all items in System Preferences > Users & Groups > Login Items
    Same for  /Library/StartupItems
Then restart your Mac. See if that made a difference.
If it's not a login item issue, check the starutp disk.
Launch Disk Utility located in HD > Applications > Utillities
Select the startup disk on the left then select the First Aid tab.
Click:  Verify Disk  (not Verify Disk Permissions)
If DU reports errors, restart your Mac while holding down the Command + R keys. From there you should be able to access the built in utilities in OS X Recovery to repair the startup disk.
Make sure to back up all important data first before using OS X Recovery.

  • Why would my imac internet be so slow suddenly?

In the last few days our safari connection has slowed dramatically. Is there something we need to check or do on the computer. We have cable internet so we shouldn't have to wait this long for pages to load.

You should be able to reboot the modem and/or router by just unplugging both, or turning them off, if there is a power switch. Wait a minute or two and reconnect to power or turn them back on.
I don't think you want to reset either.

  • Why is my macbook pro running slowly?

My macbook pro is running really slowly, even after I reinstalled the OS. I thought I would just live with it, but then I found etrecheck and thought I could get some help through this forum. Rebooting doesn't seem to help. Here's the output from Etrecheck. Any feedback would be very much appreciated:

  • 2009 iMac is running slowly after installing Yosemite

    Dear Community -
I recently "upgraded" my OS to Yosemite ... unfortunately I had not gone to Mavericks in the meantime, so there's no way for me to re-install it.
Any suggestions for how to rescue my iMac from being a brick?
    EtreCheck report is below ...
    Thanks!

  • Leopard Suddenly Running Slowly and Need Help

Hi there. I have been a Mac user (and Mac support person at work) for many years. I've recently run into a problem that I'd like some help with.
I have an iMac that I bought 4 months ago, and I upgraded to Leopard and then put 10.5.1 update onto it.
Nothing of any note has occurred with my computer in the last 2 days, however, 2 days ago, every application started running very slowly. I click on the HD icon, and the spinning color cursor spins for 30-40 seconds before the HD opens. I click in the bottom tray to open Safari, and it takes 40-50 seconds for it to open (as the color cursor spins away). I reboot, and the iMac comes up with the front white/gray screen and holds with the spinning circle for anywhere from 20 to 45 MINUTES before going to the desktop. I have reinstalled Leopard (telling it to Archive and Install). Same problems abound. I ran Tech Tool, and it says everything is fine. I started up from the Leopard install DVD and ran Disk Utility. Checking the progress log, it tells me that the HD cannot be unmounted (meantime, I've booted from the DVD and nothing else is attached or running). When I select "Repair Disk" in Disk Utility, I get an immediate message that the HD cannot be unmounted.
What does this sound like? A hard drive failure? Will completely erasing my HD and installing Leopard from scratch (as opposed to installing Tiger and upgrading to Leopard) help? Or am I merely band-aiding the problem and need to take it in for qualified Apple Tech support?
    I'd appreciate any help.
    Thanks.

Hi and welcome to the Apple forums.
I would run DU and check the disk and the permissions.
    If necessary use DiskWarrior
You might also zap the PRAM and NV-RAM.
Check the console log, other logs and of course the activity monitor.
If it is noticeably slower, what is causing it should be rather obvious.
It could be a failing drive that is being re-read multiple times to extract data from a bad block/sector.
Be sure you have everything backed up. !!!

  • Why is my iMac is running Slow?

Sure, my iMac is old (bought it around March 2006) but up until about November it was running just fine for our normal home use. Then it came to a screatching halt.  With all apps closed, it still takes 5 to 10 minutes just to open the TextEdit app. That is if it opens at all.  I hear what sounds like the hard drive running all the time.  Opening Mail, or iTunes, or iPhoto is impossible.
It is running OSX 10.6.8.  Processor = 2 GHz Intel Core Duo.  Memory = 2 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM.
It's a 250 GB Hard Drive and has 16 GB Availale.
We have Microsoft Office for Mac installed and it does its regular Updates just like Apple does so in theory it is up-to-date.
I have looked at other osts here on the subject but other than deleting items from my StartupItems list under System Preferences / Accounts / Login Items, I am not sure what to do.  Someone mentioned Mac Keeper's real time antiviruse but I can not find that on my iMac.
Are there other files that can be deleted - i.e. Lg files?   Under \Library \ Updates there are a bunch of folders with names like "041-1570" and "zzzz041-1846" that contain .dist and .pkg files.  i.e. iTunesAccess.pkg, 041-1846.English.dist, JavaForMacOSX10.6.pkg and Safari5.1.4SnowLeopard.pkg to name a few.
Are these just log files for item installed during Software updates, and Can these be deleted?
What else can I do to resolve this speed issue.  Would cleaning off more Hard Drive space help?  I was thinking of moving iTunes and/or iPhoto to an external HD. But hesitate to go through that effort if it will not help solve the problem.
Thanks in advance for your help.
    Brad.

    More Free Space wouldn't hurt...

How to correctly move your media:
iTunes: How to move the library to an EHD
iPhoto: How to move the Library to an EHD
It is important that the External Hard Drive is formatted as Mac OS Extended (journaled).
And also make sure that all is working to your Satisfaction before Deleting anything.
