Why would my iMac suddenly start freezing?

Why would my iMac (less than one year old) suddenly start freezing?  This is the 3rd time in a week.  Thanks for any help.

Other than the ones that came on the computer I've only added Quicken and MahJong game.  I was looking at some other questions and I guess I should have put more info about Mac in my question. I am running OSX Mavericks 10.9.2   Computer purchase new in May, 2013.

  • Why would my iMac suddenly run slowly out of nowhere?

Earlier this evening, I was just clicking on a song to upload it to tumblr, and my iMac froze. I had to hold "power" and restart it. After I logged in, my desktop failed to load completely (the menu bar was conspicuously absent and I had about six pictures saved to my desktop and the thumbnails were not showing up for any of them). After several restarts (I tried starting it in safe mode and hitting CommandOption+PR and neither did anything to help the problem)
I waited after the last time I restarted the computer, and after about fifteen to twenty minutes, my Mail icon started bouncing. I have it set to open at login so apparently it took about fifteen minutes for it to actually start opening. Now, simply moving the mouse freezes my computer for about three minutes. It ends up taking me about twelve minutes to position the mouse over an icon, click on it once to select it and click on it again to open it. As you can imagine, this makes it VERY difficult for me to do any of the normal tasks one might do in a situation like this (repair permissions, etc.)
This happened completely out of the blue. Up until this point, my iMac has operated almost perfectly aside from one incident several weeks ago that turned out to be a problem with my router. I just don't understand why this would happen out of nowhere, and as you can imagine I am very concerned. What would cause this to happen, and is there anything that can be done to fix it?
    Thank you all in advance.

All right, I followed your instructions...I had to click Verify Disk first because Repair Disk was grayed out. The problem is, I got an error that says:
    "First Aid Failed.
Disk Utility stopped verifying "Macintosh HD" because the following error was encountered:
    Filesystem verify or repair failed."
Then, in the Disk Utility window it says:
    "Verifying Volume 'Macintosh HD'
    Checking Journaled HFS Plus volume.
    Checking Extents Overflow file.
    Checking Catalog file.
    Invalid sibling link
    Volume check failed.
Error: Filesystem verify or repair failed."
I'm trying to again right now...now in the Disk Utility window it says:
    "Verifying Volume 'Macintosh HD'
    Checking Journaled HFS Plus volume.
    Checking Extents Overflow file.
    Checking Catalog file.
    Invalid node structure
The volume Macintosh HD needs to be repaired.
Error: filesystem verify or repair failed."
Now, I am confused because I literally CANNOT repair the disk, since that option is unavailable. What are some other options?
Also, just figured I'd throw this out there...I am not opposed to reinstalling Leopard even if it means I will lose everything on my computer. I have all of my important files backed up on my external hard drive.
Thank you for your suggestions - even though this did not work, I feel like this might help me narrow down the problem somewhat. Maybe you can clarify what all of these error messages mean.

  • Why would AOL webmail suddenly start to drop & reconnect every 2 minutes

using v7.0.1, IE8 doesn't display this behavior, so it's apparently not an AOL thing
almost like clockwork, every 2 minutes, message flashes "reloading" followed by "you've got mail" and return to webmail starting page

I forgot to mention another odd part of this issue:
In the scant five minutes of uptime I get after rebooting the router, I'm seeing only about a quarter of the speed I usually see when transferring files between my wired MacBook and my WiFi MacBook. Usually, downloading a file from the wired computer to my wireless computer goes at about 8 MBps, but in the uptime I get now, it caps out at 2 MBps.

  • Portege A100 has suddenly started freezing

My Portege A100 has suddenly started freezing for no good reason.
It also has trouble powering on sometimes in that the blue light comes on the harddrive spins up but not a lot happens and the screen remains blank.
Other times it will get into windows and allow me to use it then all of a sudden stop responding completely.
It does this in safe mode as well ad from a cold boot.
The odd thing is that it seems to be triggered physically sometimes but I couldn't swear to this and it may just be a coincidence.
    any ideas?

    Hi
You description sounds very strange because the issue what you have described happens sometimes. Possibly its only a software malfunction???
How long does the OS runs on the notebook???
What do you think about the reinstallation by using the Recovery CD?
Such reinstallation and fresh OS could sometimes solve the frizzing issues.
But if the notebook will not power up so you should test other suggestion.
You should remove power pack and ac adaptor from the notebook. Then wait several time (10-15min). Put the power pack into the notebook and connect the AC adaptor.
    Then start the notebook.

  • My iMac suddenly started running slow. almost every action invokes the color wheel

my imac suddenly started acting very choppy.  streaming internet music works normal. every action requires a delayed response. sometimes 30 sec before it starts the command. i have not downloaded any programs in months. my imac is running OS x 10.8.2 with 4GB ram.my HDD has 65Gb free space. ext HDD has 248GB free space. i do not use any virus programs.

Hello, see how many of these you can answer...
See if the Disk is issuing any S.M.A.R.T errors in Disk Utility...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH7029
Open Activity Monitor in Applications>Utilities, select All Processes & sort on CPU%, any indications there?
Open Console in Utilities & see if there are any clues or repeating messages when this happens.
In the Memory tab of Activity Monitor, are there a lot of Pageouts?
One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
    Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport, or some USB or Firewire device, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.
Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...

  • Why would my iphone suddenly lose charge rapidly (6-7%/hr) with no use

Why would my iphone suddenly lose charge rapidly (6-7%/hr) with no use?

I had the same problem with my iPhone 5 AFTER I had upgraded to IOS.
Did a good deal of searching on this site and others and found that the main advice being given was to turn off all apps that are running in the background (From the home screen double press the home button and a visual list of all apps running in the background will appear. To turn them off simply swipe your finger upwards on each).
Found that this definitely solved my problem and now make sure I do this every time I use the phone.
    Hope this helps

  • My iMac suddenly started running extremely slowly.  Any ideas as to what might be causing it?

My iMac has always run like a champ but it suddenly started running very slowly today.  I haven't done anything different.  I'm not running all kinds of programs.  I've restarted several times and it takes about 20 minutes to start up.  The little color wheel starts spinning every time I start to do anything and each task takes 10-20 minutes to complete.  I can't do much in the way of self-diagnosis as it takes too long to do anything.  I'm writing this from another computer.  Any ideas of things to try before I bring it in for repairs?
    Thanks.

In general you should always have at least  15 - 20% of your hardd rive Free
No, this is an urban legend; you don't need 15-20% free. You should try to maintain around 30GB free, no matter what the size of your drive--and that's just a very rough ballpark; you may need much less or more,  depending on how you use your computer. But you won't notice slowdowns of this order until you get really close to the edge, much lower than 30GB.
There are two possible causes for this. One, your drive is failing and you should be sure you have all your data backed up on an external before it dies completely. To check your drive get the free demo of SMART Utility. (But don't even think about doing this until you have a backup in place. That's much more important.)
    http://www.volitans-software.com/smart_utility.php
The other is you may have exhausted all your available RAM and the the system is writing to the hard disk instead because nothing is left. The drive may be "thrashing" trying to accomplish this. This will make things very slow and eventually may just freeze everything up.
Open Activity Monitor in Utilities, go to the System Memory tab. How much free memory is showing? What do you see for Page ins, Page outs and Swap used?

  • My MacBook Pro suddenly started freezing. Getting error code -5010D. Any ideas?

Yesterday I noticed my MacBook Pro started freezing up for a few seconds when doing easy tasks, like typing a FB message or browsing. It doesn't seem to be related to anything I'm actually doing, which makes me think it's a hardware problem. I can restart my computer and nothing changes, I can restart in safe mode and same thing, I have run disk utility and it came up with no errors. As the day went on the problem got worse, I started backing up my files to a thumb drive and it was takin forever! I was moving about 45GBs and it was going to take 6 - 8 hours. I was just going to leave it transferring over night but when I set my computer down it apparently got unplugged. No big deal, except now the same 45GBs says it is going to take 14 days. My computer is on it's way out fast!  I transferred just the important stuff and ran the hardware test on restart (cmd + r). It shoots back the error code 5010D. I don't know what this is for and can't seem to find anything helpful online. I am currently reinstalling Mavericks after a hard drive wipe, but it's been running for over three hours and it's not even close to being done. I don't think it is a software problem because even after a full format, it's still running slow. I just want to know what piece of hardware I need to replace. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

A little Googling seems to indicate a hard drive problem, which sounds right given the symptoms you're seeing. Make sure you've gotten a good backup of everything. The good news is hard drives are cheap and easy to install. You can look up the procedure for your machine at ifixit.com.

  • Why would wifes iPhone 5 start randome calls at 3:00 am?

Why would my wifes iPhone 5 start randome calls at 3:00 am? My wifes phone called my mother, me & one oher clients. When it called i hung it up went th go check on her & and the grandbaby in the other room. They were both out like a light. Looked at her phone and it was moving and selected another number and started to call it. I hung it up and turned it off. Funny thing is her phone was passcode protected.
    Any clues on this?

Make an appointment at an Apple Store if there is one nearby.
If not, try restoring the iPhone with iTunes as a new iPhone or not from the backup.

  • Why would my imac internet be so slow suddenly?

In the last few days our safari connection has slowed dramatically. Is there something we need to check or do on the computer. We have cable internet so we shouldn't have to wait this long for pages to load.

You should be able to reboot the modem and/or router by just unplugging both, or turning them off, if there is a power switch. Wait a minute or two and reconnect to power or turn them back on.
I don't think you want to reset either.

  • My imac recently started freezing

Ok so today my iMac froze on me while I was playing Minecraft and I couldn't control anything what so ever so I did a hard shutdown no big deal computers crash once in a blue moon right?  Just 30min. Later it happened again.  And then again. My computer is clean and usually pretty quick.  I play Minecraft and run my server often enough to know something is wrong because I don't usually have problems with this.  The problem started today so it had to be something I did.
    I have got this information:
I installed an update from the Mac AppStore I think it said something about camera RAW and a java update (Minecraft is java based)
I also installed a Minecraft update
    Finally a Minecraft server update
I think I might know what the problem is, it might be the java but I don't know at all.  I have checked activity monitor to see how much memory out of 4g I am using.  I usually have 200-700 mb free when I have Minecraft, Minecraft Server, and FaceTime running.  Have not been on computer long enough to notice if it freezes on other things besides minecraft I just spent most time doing that today.
If anybody has any ideas or fixes I would appreciate your input.

  • Why does my iMAC display start jumping left and right by itself?

This refers to a 2011 27" iMAC upgraded from Snow Leopard to Lion. The upgrade seemed to go smoothly.
Sometimes the display jumps back and forth horizontally for a few seconds. It moves about an inch or so, not just one pixel. While that's happening the cursor is visible but the magic mouse doesn't affect it.
It usually happens while I'm editing text and I'm using the mouse to move the cursor to a new place in the text. However, I'm almost always editing text so I can't be sure it's associated with that. I use the iMAC for software development. I never play music or videos.
Do other people have this problem? Can anybody say why it's happening? Is there a way to keep it from happening?  In mouse preferences all the options are checked, which is the setting I want.

I gave up on the magic mouse a long time ago. Partly because of this "stray finger touch" issue and also because mine would occassionally disconnect for a while. No matter what I did (reboot, fiddle with the bluetooth control, turn the mouse off and on, etc.) it wouldnt' come back. And then a few minutes later it would suddently come back and act normal for another few weeks or month. Two Apple guys and the local apple store said "yeah sometimes they do that.. it's a pita". So I switched to a wired mouse that I had on hand and no problems since (except it uses up one of the USB connectors, or which there are only 4).

  • Why does my iMac suddenly fail to automatically go in to sleep mode?

Had difficulty booting up system one day. Screensaver comes on after period of non-use, then black screen when display goes away, However, I no longer get "breathing" white light at right hand corner of screen, even though the screen goes black. Tech support instructed me to perform start, apple key, options p, then r. ( In order to reset PRAM.) Light will only "breathe" when it is manually placed into sleep mode; NOT when it is left alone to do it by itself. Does anyone know why this is occuring? Many thanks

    FIXED!
The IP address of the printer had changed. I printed a new Configuration Page from the printer, which contains the IP address. I then entered the new IP address into my iMac. The iMac was then able to 'see' the printer and I can now print.
The HP forums solved this for me.

  • IPod has suddenly started freezing on certain songs - help!

I've had my ipod 3G for two years now and all of a sudden it has started to freeze up during playing songs or scrolling through them, it locks up for around 10-15 seconds before moving to the previous song i played.
Also, some songs which I've had on there for ages and worked fine now play like 7-8secs and then the sound goes off but continues to play!! other times the screen just freezes. If anyone could help I'd be very greatful!! i have 1006 songs on it also if that helps. cheers

surely they'll just ignore me as the guarentee as run out? its getting worse each time i update it, certain songs don't play, others run for three seconds before pausing then playing with no music. under what terms can i ask for a replacement?

  • IMac suddenly starts up in OS X Utility! HELP!

    Hello!
i'm using IMac OSX mountain lion 10.8.5 and when I started up my computer today it didnt enter my desktop like it should.
Instead it started up OSX Utilities with the option to use ''Time mascine backup, Reinstall OS X, Get help online and Disk Utility''.
All I have tried so far is to repair my main harddrive by entering disk utility, selecting Macintosh HD (1TB APPKE HDD) and then verify and repair disk. Both times I did this it said that the disk was fine.
I DID NOT repair the Mac OS X Base System (under disk1) though since i don't dare to touch it before i was sure. Should I try to repair it? might this be the problem?
(When selecting it the only option is to ''Verify Disk'').
I also tried to enter safe mode by holding down shift at startup, but for some reason it doesnt work. When holding shift after I hear the startup sound, after a while the apple logo turns into a stop sign and a question mark folder. It's flashing between these three logos as I hold shift down, like i'm not allowed to enter safe mode.
I tried holding it down but it seems kinda pointless since nothing happens, so I release it and the OS X utilities loads up again.
    Please Help me!
    /André

Yes I have an external disk.
But I might wanna buy another one tommorow just to be safe. Maybe use an 32gb USB that I have.
My current external harddrive has backups but that was maybe 1-2 weeks ago and I have done a lot of important stuff that I need.
Its a matter of a couple folders that I need so its not the whole computer, so the 32GB USB will do just fine. Does it work with a small USB like this or do I need a big one?
And yes when I start my computer it automaticly enters the ''OSX Utility'' screen with ''Time mascine backup, Reinstall OS X, Get help online and Disk Utility'', instead of entering the login and desktop.
So all I have to do now is to connect the external backup harddrive (in this case my little USB), start up the computer (without any CD:s) choose Disk Utility and go from there?
    And i'm a bit confused with 11. and 12.
    11. When the imaging process is complete, select the newly created disk image in the device pane.  Then, chooseImages > Scan Image for Restore... from the menu bar, and let the scan complete.
!Question here! : Will this restore everything from the newly created backup, or does it just scan?
    12. Quit Disk Utility (press Command-Q). Then press Command-Q to quit the Mac OS X installer; you will be prompted to restart.
Are these last steps for a complete backup Restore only?
Is it possible to just backup the small files I need with my 32GB Usb and then reinstall OS X Mountain Lion.
(Dont delete and install, just install)
