Why would my rental of 'midnight in Paris' stop every few minutes?

Downloaded 'midnight in Paris' last night. It took over 3 hours to watch a 93 minute movire. I thought the film had downloaded when it began to play, but it kept stopping every few minutes.

I think the other devices are fine. I'm not sure. It usually only happens like a couple days out of the week. I do know that the network I'm using when I click on the wifi symbol at the top of my screen doesn't have a padlock on it. It IS MY network that is at my house, but maybe that has something to do with it.

In the scant five minutes of uptime I get after rebooting the router, I'm seeing only about a quarter of the speed I usually see when transferring files between my wired MacBook and my WiFi MacBook. Usually, downloading a file from the wired computer to my wireless computer goes at about 8 MBps, but in the uptime I get now, it caps out at 2 MBps.

My mac book pro 13" is making a strange sound evefy few minutes. It sounds like a rock being dropped in a pond. I replaced a faulty hard drive recently and I wonder if it is related to that issue.

A rock being dropped in a pond is not a beeping sound. Which one is it?

Relax, they weren't converted to PDF.
You can tell by right clicking ANY of them and choosing "Properties". You'll see there that they're STILL .xls or .xlsx files. The "association" has changed and Windows now indicates that they open with Reader, which isn't right.
Where it says "Open With" under the General tab, you can click "Change" and re-select Excel as the default app to open thim.

• I paid to watch a movie, why is it stopping every other minute?

This iTunes movie rental is a waste of my money. I feel frustrated more than anything right now. According to a speed test I have a download rate of 6+ mbps but the movie I paid for is stopping every 5 minutes. I will do whatever I can to not give my money to apple for this service ever again.
I tried changing from HD to standard definition but it hasn't changed for this movie, I'm guessing it will change for the next movie. This is a major flaw. I would be happy to watch the movie at a lower streaming rate as long as it didn't stop. I'm officially will be trying Amazon Prime next, hopefully their server farm can handle the load.
If anyone has any proven suggestions please pass them along.

Intermittent problems are often a result of interference. Interference can be caused by other networks in the neighbourhood or from household electrical items.
You can download and install iStumbler (NetStumbler for windows users) to help you see which channels are used by neighbouring networks so that you can avoid them, but iStumbler will not see household items.
Refer to your router manual for instructions on changing your wifi channel or adjusting your multicast rate.
There are other types of problems that can affect networks, but this is by far the most common, hence worth mentioning first.

Thanks for the pointers folks. Yeah, 1.5GB is pretty poor isn't it? There are other suppliers, but you have to get a their phone line installed to access the internet so it's an £85 setup fee plus a day off work for a guy to come round and drill a hole in your wall before you even get to the monthly costs.
Don't get me wrong though - I'm certainly not an Apple basher, but am equally frustrated with both them and the ISP.
Virgin Media spend all kinds of money advertising their broadband as the fastest in the UK, but don't tell you (up front anyway) that you'll be cut off if you actually try and use it.
Apple on the other hand carry on with their 'it just works' mantra, but with Apple TV this only applies if you meet certain criteria (again, not mentioned up front).
I guess it aint a biggie, as i was gifted my Apple TV, and love all the other stuff it does, but from the number of posts on this forum can see that there's a lot of angry customers out there who want explanations as to why they're having similar problems to me.
Will be very interesting to see if Apple release any kind of software update that turns the flash drive from a buffer to permanent storage, to at least ease some of the pain...

If you have a Seagate 500 GB 7200 RPM drive model ST9500420AS or ST9500420ASG, there is a widely reported problem with MacBooks that causes intermittent clicks and beeps. If that is your scenario, google for details.

Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode]] to check if one of the extensions is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).
*Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.

• Why would I get server cannot be contacted after a few hours of browsing?

I've had this problem since for several years, probably going back to v15 or so. Firefox loads and works fine for a while. Then, suddenly, for reasons I do not understand, it refuses to load any more webpages. I get a "server cannot be found" error. It's like Firefox forgets how to do an IP lookup, or gets a bogus answer that redirects to an IP that is bogus. It doesn't wait or timeout either. Once I get it once I cannot browse to any website until I close Firefox and reopen the program. Even opening new browser tabs or windows doesn't help. I have to completely exist Firefox (all instances).
I would like to note that if it is "about to break", when I click a link, bookmark, or type in the web address, when I hit enter it fails within a second or two. It doesn't sit around and timeout after 30 seconds.
I don't feel like I'm doing anything that is out of the ordinary. I have a few plugins, but this happens on multiple computers, including some that have no plugins disabled.
Here's things that may be affecting this behavior for me:
1. I use a hosts file to block a lot of spammy websites. I use a program called hostsman to handle the hosts file. I have the DNS service disabled because it cannot handle the number of entries that are in the hosts file. (been using this for more than 10 years)
2. I have disabled disk caching (I use an SSD and I have found that disk caching creates more problems for browsing than its worth). I still do the in-RAM caching, and it's not uncommon for Firefox to be using 1GB of RAM or so. I don't think I've ever seen it use more than about 1.2GB of RAM. All of the systems have massive amounts of free RAM. My main desktop has 64GB of RAM, with 75-80% of it free typically.
I've also seen this at different physical locations (home, work, other side of the country at friend's house's, etc.). This problem only affects Firefox. I haven't seen it on Chrome or Internet explorer (albeit I don't use them for hours on end). I typically have this issue a few times a day. I do work from home, and most of my work is in the browser, so it can be a bit annoying.
Right now my hardware on this machine is:
Lenovo Y55 with 16GB of RAM, i7-4700HQ and 512GB SSD. Other systems are far more powerful than this one, so I tend to think that hardware is not the problem.
Thanks.

I don't have an answer for you, but we did receive some reports of this after the release of Firefox 36. One Firefox 36 user also believed that Firefox had stopped sending DNS requests, which is a prerequisite to being able to connect to the web server. Perhaps it became more frequent for you as well, since otherwise, you probably would have posted this a few years ago...
I don't recall that we identified the source of the problem, but in many cases, it was "something" in the settings folder.
Along those lines, could you conduct this test:
'''Create a new Firefox profile'''
''This is in addition to and does not replace your existing settings.''
A new profile will have your system-installed plugins (e.g., Flash) and extensions (e.g., security suite toolbars), but no themes, other extensions, or other customizations. It also should come with completely fresh settings databases and a fresh cache folder.
Exit Firefox and start up in the Profile Manager using Start > search box (or Run) -- type or paste the following and press Enter:
firefox.exe -P
''Don't delete anything here.''
Any time you want to switch profiles, exit Firefox and return to this dialog.
Click the Create Profile button, assign a name like April7, and ignore the option to change the folder location. Then start Firefox in the new profile you created.
It might take a while to determine whether the new profile is works better than your old one. If you want to import your bookmarks from your regular profile during that time, here's how:
You can use the Library dialog (Ctrl+Shift+b or "Show All Bookmarks") to access the Restore feature. The trick is knowing where to find your bookmark backups in your regular profile. After clicking Choose File... you can paste this into the file name space and press Enter to drill down to your profile folders:
%APPDATA%\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles
The semi-randomly-named folder that has your last backup is usually the one ending with "default". Click into that one, then into the '''bookmarkbackups''' folder. Here you can pick the most recently updated file to restore.
Important: restoring a bookmark backup wipes any bookmarks currently in your active Firefox profile and replaces it with the contents of the backup file.
I think it's also reasonable to install AdBlock Plus, LastPass and SQLite Manager, as those, by themselves, are unlikely to be the source of this seemingly rare problem. But I wouldn't add all your extensions at once to the new profile.

• Why would the finder quit for 1 or 2 seconds every few minutes?

Only since installing ML.

Go to the Go menu, hold the Option key, and select the Library item that appears. Then go to the Preferences folder in here and remove the file called com.apple.Finder.plist, followed by logging out and back in to your account. Hopefully this will help the situation.

• Why would only one of my Mail account stop working?

I have a MacBook Pro running 10.6.8 and I use Mail 6.4. I have several e-mail addresses all ending n the domain that I own. For no reason today, one of the accounts will not download. Mail does not indicate tat there is anay problem. When I go into my domain, new messages are there, but they are not downloaded. The account is working on my iPad and iPhone so the problem must lie with Mail. I have changed absolutely no settings. I do not want to get rid of the account and start oveer since I will lose all the messages form the account that I have in my folders. Does anyone have any idea what could be happening and what I can do about it? Thanks.
Sass

I found the problem!!! A misbehaving rule was moving all the messages that were tagged with that address into a folder that was set up for only one of the senders. Eventhough I told the rule to assign the sender to the folder it decided to sort all the mail from the account to it!!!
Thanks for the help - knowing how to test things with a 2nd administrators account will probably come inhandy again sometime!
Now to go tame that rule!
