Why would the fan on my macbook be constantly runs, even when no applications are running.  Why?

Why would the fan on my MacBook constantly run?  Even when I have no applications running?  Is there a way to determine what is causing this to happen?

JAWade, try resetting the SMC and pram. Not always, but often those resets help problems like yours. Follow these instructions exactly.
To reset the SMC
Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord.
Wait fifteen seconds.
Attach the computer's power cord.
Wait five seconds, then press the power button to turn on the computer.
Resetting PRAM and NVRAM
Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
Release the keys.

    Hello All Who Read This!
I just bought an iPhone 5 on the 21st of March. I ate through 850 MB's in 12 days. I read up on the issue of data consumption looking for tips to conserve data. I did not know there was a problem.
This morning I found out that I was leaking data very little, but daily it accumulates. I am in Barcelona, Spain. I do not have a contract, I am on a prepaid Yoigo carrier.
I happened upon an article/blog by Robert Parks at snnyc.com "problems persist in ios 6.1.2.".
Although his situation did not relate to me, I tried a few tests on my own to see if I could stop the data leak without turning off my celular data and possibly push notifications, I think I found a solution that might help someone:
In ios 6.1.3 goto Settings/Mail, Contacts,Calenders and scroll down to Calendars and turn off " New Invitation Alerts" and also turn off "Shared Calendar Alerts".
My Cellular Network Data seems to be behaving. I only see a change in MB used when I open an ap that uses data.

  • Why do the fans on my macbook pro suddenly rev up

The fans on my macbook pro (about 3 - 4) yrs old suddenly rev up and the computer gets very hot. This is sometimes (but not necessarily) at times of optimum use.
The case seems to be vented ok. I am running Mavericks osx and use computer for range of uses - graphics, e-mails, word and spreadsheets.
    Is this a problem?
it sure make the computer noisy.

    Hello kiwiwoodz,
Thanks for the question. After reviewing your post, it sounds like the fan is running at high speed while properly ventilated. I would recommend that you read this article, it may be able to help you isolate or resolve the issue.

  • Why is the fan on my MacBook Pro so loud?

For the past week, my macbook has been really loud. About 2 weeks ago, I noticed it would start getting loud when I ran high-energy programs, or when I was downloading large files or streaming movies. It would start getting loud, would stay loud for a little while, and would then die down. This week, specifically today and yesterday, my laptop has been loud constantly, even when I'm only running 2 tabs on google chrome. My laptop doesn't feel like its getting too hot or over heating. How can I fix this?
    Hardware Overview:
      Model Name:          MacBook Pro
      Model Identifier:          MacBookPro8,1
      Processor Name:          Intel Core i5
      Processor Speed:          2.4 GHz
      Number of Processors:          1
      Total Number of Cores:          2
L2 Cache (per Core):          256 KB
      L3 Cache:          3 MB
      Memory:          4 GB
      Boot ROM Version:          MBP81.0047.B27
      SMC Version (system):          1.68f99
    Any help is appreciated.

    Try:
Reboot into Safe Mode then reboot normally. Safe mode takes longer to boot than booting regularly. That is normal.

Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder.  Select All Processes from the Processes dropdown menu.  Click twice on the CPU% column header to display in descending order.  If you find a process using a large amount of CPU time (>=70,) then select the process and click on the Quit icon in the toolbar.  Click on the Force Quit button to kill the process.  See if that helps.  Be sure to note the name of the runaway process so you can track down the cause of the problem.

  • Why is the fan of my Macbook Air suddenly so noisy?

It has become very noisy. The fan is running constantly. I never heard the fan before. Has something broken. The performance has not changed but it takes much more to start up and shut down.

    Hi aschicchi,
    Welcome to the Support Communities!
Here are a few troubleshooting steps to address your fan issue:
Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
"...these symptoms may indicate that an SMC reset may be necessary:
    Fans
The computer's fans run at high speed although the computer is not experiencing heavy usage and is properly ventilated."
    Before Resetting the SMC
Try each of the following steps in this order before you reset the SMC.  Test the issue after completing each troubleshooting step to determine if the issue still occurs.
Press Command + Option + Escape to force quit any application that is not responding.
Put your Mac to sleep by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosingSleep. Wake the computer after it has gone to sleep.
Restart your Mac by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Restart.
Shut down your Mac by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Shut Down.
Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    Shut down the computer.
Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.
On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
Note: The LED on the MagSafe power adapter may change states or temporarily turn off when you reset the SMC.
I hope this information helps ....
    Have a great day!

  • Why does the YouTube app say playback error every time even when I have wi-fi

When I try playing a video it keep saying playback error even when I have wi-fi on. This has happened a few days ago.

I notice that the WiFi is "white", like all good KitKat icons, instead of White for connected with no internet, and blue for fully functioning.
The 1x right next to it seems very dim.  If I turn off WiFi, the 1x gets bright white, and has the up/down arrows under it.
If having the icon on my status bar all the time means that I actually will get data when I leave WiFi, then it's a winner.
I "hotspot" a lot, and I used to have to make sure I had a data connection and launch the hotspot before I got on a phone call, because the only way to get it to connect was to power cycle the phone.

  • Fan is constantly runnin even if no programs are running

I've had my i mac for roughly 3 and a half years now. Im having a problem with the fan running full blast. even when there are no programs running. I've tried to reset the fan but it still happens. could it be that I just need more memory?

The general 961, we need more details about your system.
It would help us to know what computer model you have, which OS version you're using, how much RAM, etc. You can have this info displayed on the bottom of every post by going to 'My Settings' preferences which is located in the column on the right under your name, and filling in the information asked for.
This will help in providing you with the proper and/or correct troubleshooting solutions. The more info about your computer(s) you include, the easier it is to help you.
Thanking you for your anticipated cooperation.
PS: If you do not know the model of your iMac, you can check under Apple Menu>About This Mac which is located in the upper left hand corner of your computer screen or you can check Knowlege Base Article http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301724#301724 How to identify your iMac

  • MacBook White lagging and hanging when certain applications are being run

My 9-month-old MacBook White (Core 2 Duo, 2.4 GHz) lags whenever I use SketchUp, and hangs sometimes when I use FlightGear or X-Plane (flight simulators). No other applications were running when these were being used. Is it a CPU problem, or a RAM shortage? Any answers and/or clarification would be much appreciated.

Can you go to Applications > Utilities > Activity Monitor and check that all the processes you are running are Intel (you will find this info under the "Kind" column in the Activity Monitor window).
Also see (in the same window, under the "%CPU" column) if there appears to be any processes which are using an inordinate amount of CPU.

  • Why are the fans on my macbook constantly running loudly

The fans on my macbook are running loudly and my computer is running very slowly.
Does anyone know a solution to this?

Either the cpu is cycling doing some intensive work (see Activity Monitor) or the SMC needs resetting.

You can also install an app to monitor temperature and speed eg SMC Fan Control.

  • The fan in my Macbook Pro heats up

The fan in my Macbook Pro heats up quite fast.
I wanted to know how much it would cost to get it fixed as I don't have Apple care and my warranty has expired?

Buy an external microphone or a headset. Which type depends on what type Mac you have. The 13" model has a single combo jack, the 15" and 17" models have separate input and output jacks.

    Hi rhaughan,
I see that you have concerns about your operating temperature of your computer while using resource-heavy applications such as gaming applications. I have an article that will address some of the concerns you have mentioned:
Mac notebooks: Operating temperature - Apple Support
    http://support.apple.com/en-is/HT201640
While there are third-party utilities that measure the temperature of a notebook computer, it is important to understand that these utilities are not measuring the external case temperature. The actual case temperature is much lower. Never use third-party applications to diagnose possible hardware issues—instead, contact Apple or go to an Apple Retail Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider.

  • I loaded a lot of music from my CDs on to my iMac at home.  All my music is stored on the cloud.  So why is the music on my MacBook Pro different.  The CDs are missing from this list.

I loaded a lot of music from my CDs on to my iMac at home.  All my music is stored on the cloud.  So why is the music on my MacBook Pro different.  The CDs are missing from this list. The iTunes account details I use on both computers is the same.

    Hi Chris,
    Thanks for the reply.
I think you ave sorted my problem with your question.  I thought that as my iTunes account was on their server (Cloud) and I had previously added CDs which showed up, that all my music was "on the cloud".  I used to use Match but when I turned it off lost all my music that I had previously loaded onto my computer.
So I guess I have to use the cloud again to access my songs.  This is frustrating as I fly a lot and can not use the music (Cloud based) when the phone is in flight mode as there is no internet.
So how then do I retrieve all my music to my iMac and have my laptop synced so they are the same?
    I am totally confused now.
