Wi Fi access to old Macbook?

Utterly baffled.
I searched and can find no information here or in Apple's MacBook Air manual.
I used Migration Assistant to set up a new MacBook Air from an old MacBook. It worked. I see the CD and DVD sharing connection. But - how do I move files between the two MacBooks over Wi Fi?
Also, how do I set up Time Machine on the MacBook Air to backup wirelessly to the external drive that is connected to my old MacBook?
This seems like a basic configuration to me. Have I completely misunderstood how MacBook Air operates?

so If I understand, you used migration assistant to move files from your old computer to your new computer. But now you want to move additional files between the computers?
http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1549 explains how to enable file sharing. Ones you have file sharing enable make sure both computers are on the same network. Then on the other computer you should be able to access the computer by.
go to the dock
click on finder
if you look on the left side of the finder window; you should see a section called shared. and the other computer should be listed.
Backing up, it's really better to use a hard drive directly connected to the computer.

Thanks, I appreciate the help. I think this is one of the problems Apple is creating by changing the OS so often. I had fomer colleagues at [a major aerospace contractor] who told me that so many original files were ultimately lost because of the deadly change in the "Save As" operation that they are now afraid of every OS update. Apple has badly damaged their support base with that very prominent company (they won't update now until they've fully examined and understand changes in the pre-conditioned nature of OS computer functions), and they are a whole lot less enthaled with Mac-related equipment/software. Can't blame them, I too used orginal files that way (as easy-to-use templates), and lost some important files before I realized what was happening (to late to revert). Companies should not have to retrain employees each time an OS gets an update, it's can be very expensive several different ways. They learned a painful lesson with that one. And because I'm now retired and don't use multiple devices, I need iCloud like I need a hole in the head... but I'm told there's no way to keep Apple out of my computer. Fortunately, because of major problems when initially installing Mountain Lion, one hold-over of the hardware/software damage I experienced was that iCloud can no longer access my computer even though everything else is working fine again. That was the only "good luck" I had as a result of that expensive nightmare.

If you have purchases on your iPod Shuffle that you want to sync back to iTunes, but are under the Apple ID you no longer have access to, you'll need to reset that account information. You can use this link to reset your password.

If that doesn' work or help, you'll need to contact iTunes support and have them walk you through the process of resetting the older account information. Once you know the email and password again, you can authorize your new computer and transfer any purchases from this account back to iTunes.
For all non-iTunes purchased content, you'll need to the assistance of some sort of third party software that is not supported by Apple. See this older post from another forum member Zevoneer covering the different methods and software available to assist you with the task of copying content from your iPod back to your PC and into iTunes.

If you created a new Apple ID, you have to purchase the app again. If you can still use the old ID, then you can download it again for free by using that ID. But you will run the risk of locking yourself out of your new Apple ID for 90 days by downloading the app with your old ID and associating the iPad with the old ID.

In the "name" column, you should see your current user name. Ensure the "privilege" is set to Read and Write. They maybe corrupt, try transferring again from the g4. If iTunes is giving you an error then you need to authorize your computer with the same iTunes account as previously. Also, you could try exporting your iTunes library via iTunes on the g4.

You CAN'T download published files and then edit them in iWeb because iWeb can't open them - it has no import facility so is unable to open any html or css files - a previously published site.
You can download these files yes, but you'll need to use them as a guide or to cut and paste text from there whilst you re-build your site in iWeb.
The only other way is to download the files and then open them with an html editor such as TextWrangler or use one of the other web design programmes out there that is capable of importing html and css such as Dreamweaver of Flux 4.
These are your only alternatives as iWeb can't import and if you want to continue to use iWeb, then you'll have to re-build your site from scratch. If you do just remember to back up your domain.sites file this time around - it is found under your User/Library/Applicaion Support/iWeb/domain.sites.

Note you can use the same Apple ID in
Settings > iTunes & App Store > Apple ID: > here to share purchased music, apps and books.
Other than that each of you should use your own Apple ID for iMessage, FaceTime, iCloud, Game Center, etc.

I have had to "re-instate" "Mail" on my 5yr old Macbook Pro after it got "lost"during an s/w upgrade to Snow Leopard v10.6.8. In reinstated version all my Email archive folders are now missing from the screen. How/where do I find them ??

I recently purchased Snow Leopard v10.6.3 in order to upgrade the OSX platform on my 5 year old Macbook Pro. That loaded without trouble. Then I needed to do an online upgrade from 10.6.3 to 10.6.8 (via 10.6.4) and there the trouble commenced !! Somewhere along the way, the "Mail" application simply disappeared! On advice from Apple telephone support, I did a "selective" reinstall of "Mail" from the Snow Leopard disk, but the version of Mail it loaded (v4.5) was wrong for use with OSX v10.6.8 and so it kept asking for the 'latest" version (v4.6) and just would not work. I tried a "Fix" download provided on the Apple site, that didn't work.
I spent 2 hours at the Genius Bar of my local Apple Store and they finally found a fix, after some difficulty. Apparently there had been a programming error somewhere in one of the Apple update downloads.
So now I have "Mail" back - but the Mailbox folders now not as they were before - particularly they do not contain my archive Folders that I had been using to store certain historic emails.
I think the folder structure on "Mail" is now identical to that on my "BT Yahoo" screen - whereas before they had been different. My local Apple Store told me that it was practice now to synchronise the "Mail" screen and (for example) the BT Yahoo screen to be identical. This is well and good going forward - but does not help me with access to my historic "email filing system" !!
Anyone help me find those missing folders ?? They must be stored somewhere, but where ??!!

Use the trackpad to scroll, thats what it was designed for. The scroll bars automatically disappear when not being used and will appear if you scroll up or down using the trackpad.
This is a user-to-user forum and most people will post on here if they have problems. You very rarely get people posting to say there update went smooth. The fact is the vast majority of Mountain Lion users will not be experiencing any major problems with the OS, or maybe with apps which are not compatible, but thats hardly Apple's fault if developers don't update their apps.

Trapped at transferring data from my old macbook pro to iMac

I got a new iMac yesterday and was trying to transfer data from my old macbook pro to iMac through time machine...
However, I encountered HUGE problems....
Background info: I set up a new account before I transffered my data.
Here is what I did:
I used migration assistance to transfer data. I chose to transfer everything listed on migration assistance from time machine to my new iMac.
After this process was completed, I switched to the transferred account from my newly-set account. Then I realized all the old stuf, (including the software problems + old apps such as microsoft 2008, had been transferred to my new iMac. what I really wanted were all the documents, pictures and music! Therefore I decided to delete this account....
Question 1:
1) I deleted the transferred account, then there was a windown came up asking me if i wanted to keep the home folder, I chose no. then mac started cleaning up and BACKING UP. Since I already had a copy of everything, I stopped the backup process....then this transferred account was deleted. However, everything was still on my mac that I don't have access to (at least I don't know how...) when I checked my mac stroage!
Could anyone tell me how to delete all the files I transferred from time machine to my new iMac?

2) how can i only transfer documents+pictures+music from my old macbook pro to new iMac through time machine without creating a new account? I want all the files to be directly transferred to my newly-set account...

I suggest starting over. Boot into Recovery mode, wipe the HD, reinstall the OS, and, on first boot, use the steps in Pondini's Setup New Mac guide to do the migration.'

Old MacBook showed up on iMessage

I recently have changed my Apple ID password so I was logging in on my current devices (Mac Pro, iPhone, and iPad). I recently sold an old mid 2010 white MacBook to a store. Before doing so, I was sure to boot from the Snow Leopard CD, use the Disk Utility to erase the hard drive, and I even ran a clean install of the OS.
After logging in on my iPhone, it showed me messages such as "Andrew's iPad is now available for iMessage". It showed me on stating that "Andrew's MacBook is now available for iMessage" which scared me a little since I sold that a while ago.
I unregistered the MacBook on Support Profile. I'm about to change my Apple ID password again.
Is it possible that the old MacBook has had access to my iMessages?
What can I do to prevent that further if so.

Good question as I just had the same thing happen tonight. A Macbook air that I just formatted and reinstalled the OS on was sold to a friend earlier today and tonight I got a message saying that my iMessage was now being used on that device. Hmmmm.
