Wi-fi connection hangs/drops if lid is moved

I have a really annoying issue with my Macbook pro (mid-2010 model) and I'm hoping somebody out there can help. For the past 2 years I've had wifi connection issues. Suddenly wifi will drop completely, and by 'drop' I mean the macbook still thinks its connected to my router (link is fine according to network config) but the wifi doesn't work (no internet, no LAN etc). If I turn wireless off, the signal icon goes completely empty and I can't turn wifi back on, it literally does nothing and the icon stays empty. The only way to get it back is to reboot the machine - hey presto, everything works again, until the next time......
The macbook worked fine when I first bought it, so I've always thought this was software related and due to an OS upgrade - but never been able to prove it.
Searching forums I've been unable to find anyone with this same issue - which I find totally staggering!
After putting up with this for too long I decided to really focus on testing what it could be.
What I noticed was that the issue seemed to occur if I moved the macbook, specifically if the lid was moved (by 'moved' I'm talking general vibration while moving around, not actually closing it!) Researching the macbook pro 2010 design, I found that the airport card and the antennae are both located in the hinge of the lid - hmmm, seeing a potential link now? So, my next assumption was that perhaps one of them had come loose over time and the movement of the lid was temporarily losing the connection - but.... if that was the case, how did it magically reconnect when I rebooted.
So, if I'm browsing the internet on wifi and deliberately move the lid then I will lose my wifi (connection to router stays but no internet!). This happens every time without fail. BUT, what's more intriguing is that if I have Vuze running (its a p2p application for sharing/downloading files - not the point of this post so please stay focussed before screaming about legalities) then I can move the lid all I like and wifi stays running without an issue. So, it seems that if I have an active wifi connection then everything works fine when the lid is moved. Its only if my connection isn't constantly active (general internet browsing etc) that the issue occurs. Something els eto point out is that this definitely didn't happen when I first bought the macbook (2011), so its only started since I upgraded the OS - my guess from memory, is that it was probably the upgrade to Lion.
I'm no expert but to me this has got to be a software/driver issue. Any experts out there want to wade in and validate my assumptions/conclusion? Perhaps offer some thoughts about possible resolutions? Would be greatly appreciated

*As a side note to your last,  you can't have a driver or software issue if there is utter certainty of wifi being dropped due to mechanical motion.   i.e. the hinge
Pardon for the 2nd post, Iwas on an Ipad for a few mins.
Contact Apple about your wifi antenna for complete diagnostic / replacement of fault.

  • JCO connections hanged in SMGW transaction at SAP

    Hi ,
I have deployed an ear application in SAP WAS 7.0 which basically talks to my SAP backend using JCO 2.1 connectors. The application will fetch the data from SAP backend calling FM using JCO 2.1.
I m using JCO pool manager and set to default 100 connections and taken care of release connections after every RFC call in finally block. The connections released successfully in  Dev and QA landscapes. In prod environment of customer, we are facing connections hang issues when it reaches to peak state of 100. It is due to max conversations reached at SAP backend, but the connections should eventually drop in SMGW which is not happening. There are some lost connections got hanged and remains for days and even they are not re-used. When i run method to release the pool, all connections are focibly returned back to pool, but lost connections still remain there.
Can somebody has similar situation ?
if connections reached to max in SMGW, will the connections from external client applications will get hanged ?
Does the JCO have control on the hanged connections if it reaches to max number?
    Any help is appreciated!!!
    Regards,
    Ravi.

The relevant SAP note here is [549268|https://service.sap.com/sap/support/notes/549268].
But in this context there is big difference between the terms "not supported" and "does not work".
When SAP speaks of "not supported" this means that there won't be any SAP support for this configuration but this does not say anything about if this works technically. "Not supported" is more a legal issue than a technical one. SAP did not test this configuration and therefore also cannot guarantee to work.
Regarding JCo 2.1 I can say that technically it works with all Windows 32- and 64-bit versions. In contrast to that it really does not work with JRE releases >= 1.5 when using BCD types (type P) within your function modules.
From my point of view the connection issues don't have anything to do with the Windows version here.
And it is still not clear to me, if the maximum number of CPIC connections is reached at the AS ABAP/gateway side or the Java side. Furthermore it is not clear if these "hanging connections" were opened with your application at all or if they belong to another application.

Remote App on iPad connects but drops after about  20 mins. Need to turn  off wait about 1 minute, then turn on wifi on iMac before it can reconnect. Need some help please.
Already gone through troubleshooting guide a zillion times. Thanks.

This worked for me... A little time consuming but once you get rolling it goes GREAT... Thanks....
I got my artwork and saved it to my Desktop
Opened up Microsoft Paint and clicked on "File" and "Open" and found it to get it on the screen to resize it
Clicked "resize" and a box for changing it opened up
Checked the box "Pixels" and "Unchecked maintain aspect ratio"
Set Horizontal for 640 and Vertical for 480
Clicked on "OK" and went back to "File" and did a "Save As" and chose JPEG Picture
It came up "File Already Existed" and clicked "OK" (really did not care about the original artwork I found because wrong size)
Went to iTunes and on the movie right clicked on "Get Info", clicked on "Details", then "Artwork"
Go to the little box on the top left that shows your old artwork and click on it to get the little blue border to appear around it and hit "Delete" to make it gone
Click on "Add Artwork" and find it where you put the one from above on your Desktop and hit "Open" and OK and your new artwork is now there and all good.
Sounds like a lot of steps to follow but after around 5 or so you will fly through it. This worked perfect on my iPhone 6 Plus and I have artwork on my Home Videos now.

  • Internet Connection Sporadically Drops Out

This problem has been ongoing for several months now.  Usually one or more times a day the internet connection will drop out, usually for a few minutes at a time.  Sometimes I get the yellow triangle in the taskbar, other times I don't.  I've gone back and forth with customer service several times.  Earlier this week they replaced my router to no avail.  They now tell me there are no connection drops or errors in the event logs and have tried to blame my computer/NIC.  I explained to them that it's not the connection between my NIC and the router that is breaking, but rather the connection between the router and the internet, or the connection between the router and the FiOS box.  Either way it's on the other side of the router.  I don't know why it doesn't show up in the event logs, but it is just about a daily occurrence.  So far the haven't even offered to sent a tech out.  I've gone back and forth like four or five times now, and I know the customer service reps are just trying to help, but so far it hasn't done any good.  The issue obviously needs to be escalated, so I figured I'd try here first.  Does anyone have any ideas on what the problem might be?  Has anyone else ever experienced this problem and been told there's no flags or errors in the event logs?  Thank you for your help.

  • Internet connection keeps dropping at night

I'm having a bit of a weird problem with my internet connection. I connect via an ethernet cable and the connection keeps dropping. It generally starts after 7pm and seems to be every 40 minutes. I have changed the microfilters and ethernet cable but I'm still getting this problem. The really weird thing is that all four lights on the hub are blue but the computer cannot connect to the router. Sometimes the connection will just drop other times it will say limited connection. I've finally had to resort to windows diagnostics and sometimes even that doesn't work. I swapped my black hub with the old white one and  I didn't have this problem of the connection dropping but my connection speed dropped to 1.5 - 2mb.
I was thinking maybe there was something wrong with my ethernet card but now I think it must be something in the black hub because the white one worked. Am I correct in thinking I need a new router?

  • Is there a problem with FaceTime, can not connect. When dial it connects and drops. When friends are calling me they have calling message and I have connecting but it does not connect. Need help, face time is my life line.

Face time not working. When dialled it says connecting and drops immediately. When my friends calling it show connecting but it does not.
Is there a problem with face time. I am in south Africa, it was working perfectly up to Easter. Please help this is my life line.

There is a barely acknowledged issue. For Mac users Apple has released an update to the app, but for iOS users the recommendation is for users to update their ipad to the most recent operating system.
There may be a fix coming for iOS6 users (which seem to be many of those having problems) or there may not be. If your ipad isn't up to date then you can update it and see if that helps, or if you don't want to update then you may want to wait and see if there is either a fix or if it fixes itself.

  • Looking for trouble shooting help -Connections being dropped from app.

I need a little help in hunting down the source of a problem. We have Oracle 10gR2 (10.2.0.1) running on Solaris 10. The web application is based on WEBLOGIC on another server also running Solaris 10 with a new firewall in between. When started, the application will get 176 connections to the database. Over time, still working on how long, the connections get dropped. The profile they app is connecting to is for unlimited connections and connection time. I do not have an setting to disconnect after idle for x minutes. Even the listener spawned processes die. Other applications from other machines also have problems if idle for a period of time, SQLDeveloper, SQLPlus, TOAD, SQLNAVIGATOR.
We are trying to hunt down the source of the problem but are at a loss. I have checked and verified that the oracle instance does not have a parameter set to kill idle connections for the users the apps are connecting as. The sys admin says there are no unix parameters he knows about on either solaris box that is killing connections and that the firewall settings should not be killing them.
A duplicate environment running all the same versions of software work fine, the only differences between the two is the box and operating system, Sun V120 w/Solaris 8 vs. Sun V40Z w/Solaris 10.
This system goes live in two weeks so we are trying to get this figured out soon. Any hints on where to look or has any one else had similar problems?

  • Phone line and BB connection keeps dropping - BT H...

My broadband and phone connection keeps dropping.  Its been fine for years and now since all this bad weather we have been having the connection lasts temporarily for a few minutes sometimes more and then all the blue lights start flashing orange, sometimes for a while, and then back to blue.  Could it be that there is a wider problem in the area I am living in my area.  I have tried to report this to BT via the Indian call centre but the best they can offer me is an engineer visit on 20 January (!!) and I may have to pay £130 if the fault is found on my property so I would like to know first if there is a wider probelm affecting others in my area.  Many thanks.

  • 3G connection keeps dropping out after 4.2.1 update

Hi, I'm wondering if anyone could help me.
I have the iPhone 4, and it was working perfectly... until I upgraded to iOS 4.2.1.
Ever since then, my 3G connection keeps dropping out, and I'm just left with vodafone UK (with usually 3-4 bar signal) but no 'o', 'E' or '3G' symbol.
After about 20 minutes of no cellular data, I'd get the 'o' symbol, then 10 seconds later it would change to '3G'. But then after 5 seconds it would lose it. The cycle would continue in this way.
Strangely, when at home, the 3G would stay connected. But when I go anywhere, I lose 3G.
When I turn 3G off, I get constant 'o' connection where ever I go. It doesn't drop out.
I've tried resetting the phone, and resetting network settings.
    Does anyone have any ideas?
    Thanks.

I'm having a similar issue with my new iPhone 4 (w/ 4.2.1)... It continually cycles through the following sequence:
    AT&T / 3G
    AT&T / No Data
    Searching…
    Searching… 3G
    AT&T / 3G
    (loops…)
Here is a video of the cycling. Note the iPhone 4 is just sitting on a coffee table in my house.
    http://dl.dropbox.com/u/7186070/ip4fw421searching.mov
Also worth noting, I just got the iPhone 4 and I updated it to 4.2.1 right away. Previously, I had a 3GS which did not exhibit any of this behavior in the same location in my house. Also, my girlfriend still has a 3GS and has FW 4.2.1 without these issues. I have a video of her phone in the exact same location taken just after the clip above and her phone maintains 3-bars / AT&T / 3G the entire time.
I picked up the iPhone 4 while out of state over the holiday weekend and did not observe any of these connectivity issues, in fact the 3G throughput of the iPhone 4 was significantly better (consistently got >4 Mbps down / >800 Kbps up) than what my family members were seeing with their 3GS models.
I believe it is a baseband issue introduced with the 4.2.1 update for iPhone 4, but I also strongly believe there is some tower component to this problem (ie, software revision at the tower or configuration).
Like others here, I also performed a restore to 4.2.1 through iTunes and setup my phone as "New" and I continue to see the behavior. The phone is unusable in my house unless I manually disable 3G. As a final data point, when I'm able to maintain a 3G connection long enough in my house I get the following throughput from Speedtest.net: 1863 Kbps down / 543 Kbps up.

  • BT Openzone - connection keeps dropping tho' signa...

I sometimes work in a place where I don't have a wired connection and reply on openzone.  There is invariably a signal between two and four bars.   However good the signal, I find the connection increasingly drops, often for hours, and I get the message that the server cannot be found.   If anything, the problem is worse when the signal is stronger, although there is generally no correlation between signal strength and losing the connection.   Overall this is happening more and more often, with only sporadic connection for short periods now.   Could it be a setting on my netbook?   Any solutions?
    Thanks.

Do you know if it's a commercial openzone (like a phonebox) or a hub (either a bt business or home hub)? If it's a hub, it's capped at 0.5 mb so if there are more than a couple of users sites will start timing out. If so not too much you can do I'm afraid.

  • Very slow broadband and connection keeps dropping

Hello, we have been BT customers since August 2013, after previously being Freeola customers for many years.  We live in a very rural area, at the end of the exchange so we are never going to get amazingly fast broadband, we are estimated 1MB.
Previously using Speedtest.net at the beginning of the year we were getting 0.9Mbps, then in May our internet dropped and we couldn't get a proper connection or speed.  We contacted Freeola who after doing some tests, said that we had a copper line failure and to contact BT.  We did this and the copper line failure issue was fixed, an openreach engineer tested the line and we assumed all was fine.  But we were still getting very slow speeds and the connection kept dropping.  So we decided to switch to BT in August, we have put up with the slow speeds and dropping connection for 3 months hoping in vain that once we got a stable line the speed would increase and we would be back to were we expected to be.
When we are using the internet, we very often get "Your connection has been reset" errors within our browsers.
This has not happened, so I have decided to come on to this forum in the hope that we can solve this issue before my hair gets any greyer.  We have a BT Home Hub 4 so we have not got all the stats that previous HH had available.
Also as we are in a rural area our telephone connection is through overhead cables and as said previously we are at the end of the exchange.
Please see below for the information that I have been able to get:
    Home hub stats:

    Hi jacoma,
Sorry to hear that your  having issues with your BT Retail services.
You will either be on the ADSLMax (upto 8mbps) service or if your exchange has been BTw 21cn upgraded you maybe on the ADSL2/2+ (upto 12/20mbps) service depending on your line quality and length.
However these upto speeds may not be the speeds you will get as ADSL broadband connections are very dependent on the distance from your property to the exchange and the quality of your line. The further away you are from your local exchange the slower your broadband speed will be.
To enable the community to help you please see the advice below:
Please see Keith's help guide here: Helping forum members to help you, it will go through some checks that are needed for us to help you.
    1) Are you in the TEST socket? if not can you please connect to the test socket and repeat steps 2, 3 and 4.
All the below performed in TEST Socket:
    2) is there any noise on your line. dial 17070 option2 ,called quite line test, from landline phone. should be silent but slight hum normal on cordless phone.
If there is any noise on your line such as crackling, distictive noise when the phone is connected to the TEST socket and doing the quiet line test then you need to report a line fault to BT Retail by dailling 151. Once the crackling or disticive noise has gone then your broadband should slowly recover.
    3) please post adsl line statistics
    4) Can you please run a BT speed test (including IP Profile) http://speedtest.btwholesale.com (not beta version)[Best done with a wired, Ethernet, connection] After Quick Test is done you need to click "Further Diagnostics" to get IP Profile.
    ADSL Line Statistic Help:
If you have a BT Home Hub like the one below...
     Then:
     1) Go to http://192.168.1.254 or http://bthomehub.home
     2) click Settings
     3) Click Advanced Settings
     4) Click Broadband
     5) Click Connection or sometimes called ADSL (see picture Below)
The direct Address is http://bthomehub.home/index.cgi?active_page=9116 (for bthomehub3.A firmware ending in 1.3)
or http://bthomehub.home/index.cgi?active_page=9118 (for bthomehub3.A firmware ending in 94.1.11)
You will need to copy and past all the adsl line statistics ( Including HEC, CRC and FEC errors). You may need to click " More Details"
If you have a HomeHub 4 then the majority of the ADSL Stats shown in the previous Hubs will not be there.
for HH4 users you can go to hub manager then select troubleshooting then logs and are look for 2 entries together which will show theconnection speed and noise margin for when your HH4 last sycned with the exchange.
There are more useful links on Keith's website here: If you have an ADSL connection, please select this link

  • Connection hange while trying to connect via ssh.

    Hi all,
I have this problem and i fixed it, just wanted to understand the logic behiend it.
I tried to login to a machine via ssh.
After providing the username and password, the connection hang until you press CTRL -C.
I checked DNS configuration, and some other stuff.
The problem was a NFS entry in the vfstab that was unreachable.
When i removed it, the connection went smoothlly.
My question is, why that entry caused that problem ?
    Thanks!

At login, the shell runs 'quota -v' to display any over-quota conditions that might exist.
If the NFS mount was not mounted with "noquta", then it will send an RPC request to the server. If the server is down, that request will take 60 seconds to time out. If you have multiple mounts to the server, they might run sequentially.
The login should complete after a minute or so, but most users won't wait that long.

  • How to know whether connection is dropped

    Hi,
I have developed RMI chat application in which clients register with the server to send and receive messages. I want to know if there anyway to detect the connection is dropped due to network problem both on server and client side. My intention is to achieve this:
    For the server,
If it knows a client is disconnected, it can trigger the event to other clients.
    For the client,
If it is disconnected, it will automatically reconnect to the server. How can I reconnect again in RMI?
