Wi-fi Connectivity in Hotels

I am a frequent traveler. The wi-fi in my hotels are great.
But more often than not, although the wifi is connected when I first initiate the Mac from standby (the tick sign at the wi-fi icon is on), it it's not actually conected until I reboot the Mac.
My home and office wi-fi and certain hotels are fine.
Thanks in advance for your advice.

‘Connection fails’ states, the Nokia 310 was not able to retrieve an IP address.
Normally, this happens when there is no DHCP server running in your Wi-Fi access point. However then, no other mobile device is able to browse via your Wi-Fi access-point. Another cause: Your DHCP server does not have an IP address left for your Nokia. The latter case is fixed by power-off/on (rebooting) the Wi-Fi access-point.
Nevertheless, we do have too many ‘connection failed’ reports here on Nokia Support Discussions. There must be other causes as well. ams_saha, do you have an Android device, OS X or Windows computer around? Then, please, continue there and report your results.

Let me know if it works connecting in hotel room

I understand. But, even if the hotel has an Ethernet port in the room, some hotel networks will not allow another router (Apple or any other brand) to connect to the network.
It is not possible to say in advance whether an AirPort....or any other router...will work on a hotel Ethernet network. If you call the hotel to ask them, in most cases they will have no idea of what you are asking....since they think guests connect their computer to the Ethernet port, not a router.
I have traveled full time for 8 years with an AirPort, and find that it will work about 75-80% of the time when the hotel has an Ethernet port in the room. If I have stayed at the same hotel previously, then I already know whether it will work or not, so whenever possible, I stay at hotels where I know it will work.

How do I connect ipad 2 to wired internet connections in hotels?

You need some sort of travel router for WiFi connection. I don't use one, but the Apple Airport Express can be packed into a suitcase and used as a portable router. It has to be set up with a computer first, but after that, you can travel with it and use it for a wireless connection. There are others available as well.

  • Macbook Pro stuck on Self-Assigned IP when connecting to hotel Wifi

my travel mates are having no problems connecting to hotel wireless.
i can connect to the access point, but i can't get online. my network pane in system preferences says "self-assigned ip" and it won't do anything else.
we're all on macbooks or higher. 10.5.6 or 10.5.7
i've tried replicating the working macs' IP settings as a manual config on my MBP. no luck. it's very odd. i'm stuck. any ideas?
i've used onyx to clear out all caches. done a full shut down, restart, pram reset. toggling my airport card power. i can connect using my Verizon wireless (like now, as i type this). my travel mates also use the same Verizon modems and software. i don't think that that's causing a problem.

This was happening to me at my office today. It kept saying that it had Self-Assigned IP. My ISP told me that it wasn't recognizing my router.
First, I made sure that the Under TCP/IP that "Configure IPv4" was set at "Using DHCP" from the drop-down menu and then I shut my computer down. I then reset my modem and linksys router (unplug power to back of modem first and then router, then plug modem back in, wait for 4th light of modem to go on,then plug router back in). After that, I restarted my iMac and it Configured IPv4 correctly using DHCP. Sorry if I'm being too basic, don't have a lot of networking knowledge. I've asked the hotel I was staying at before to reset their modem/router and they were able to do this for me.

  • In hotel w/wireless network.  ATV finds network, but does not ask me for password, so can't communicate through network.  MacBook Air, iPad and 2 iPhones connected to hotel wireless, but ATV does not ask me for the password.  Any ideas?

I have succesfully connected a MacBook Air, an iPad and two iPhones to the wireless network in this hotel.  Apple TV can see the network and "connects" to the network, but w/o asking for password.  I expected to see a screen immediately after selecting the network that asked me for the password as did all of my other devices.  ATV did not ask me for a password.  When I go to Settings>General>Network, it shows the name of the hotel wireless network, but I can't communicate with the network.  It can't set date and time.  When I try to enter my Apple account name and password, it tells me it can't log in w/o setting date and time.
Any ideas on how to connect to this network?

I am having the same problem. In my hotel when I connect my laptop a screen will pop up and you have to hit the button "I Accept Terms". However I can't do that with the ATV. I called the internet provider and they said they could not help me. Any ideas? Do you think the guy just doesn't know what he can do for me? I am thinking I will call later and hope to get a different technician who might know how to help connect me.

  • TS1398 Problems with Wifi connection in hotels with Ipad

    Hi guys!
I bought an Ipad MD528C/A lately and I have difficulty connecting to some public Wifi such as hotels' wifi. I don't understand why it's doing that; I tried to change the settings as some people suggests in certain forums, and it still is not working. The thing is, I bought my Ipad so I could stay in touch with Internet (and the world) while I travel...so...it is kind of frustrating. Anyone could help me ?
    Thank you very much!

    Hi!
I have sometimes the same problem in some public wifi networks... and I solve it switching off the "mobile data" in the iPad settings.
I don't know why, but it rules... ;-)
    Good luck!
    Carlos.

  • Problems maintaining network connectivity in hotels

I have a problem maintaining internet connectivity when I use hotel WiFi services where you have to "login" first via the web browser. I don't have a problem with the WiFi per se and I have no problems with initial connectivity -- I can login and browse the Web without problems. But if my MacBook goes to sleep, I can't browse, get email, etc when it wakes up.
I don't have this problem at home - only when I travel to places where I have to first "login". This has been happening consistently since I got the MacBook 10 months ago and at various hotel chains around the country. Also when I have another laptop with me ( Windows ) I don't see this problem. Sometimes on the Windows machine I have to "login" again after it wakes up but I never have this opportunity on my MacBook -- the browser just hangs there, "loading" indefinitely.
The only way I've found to fix this is to reboot my MacBook. I've tried Googling for a solution or even anybody else who has this problem and I've turned up nothing! I am really the only person having this problem?!? LOL...

Unfortunately this is a fact of life with these types of hotel systems. Live with it or set your Mac to "Computer never sleep" when you are traveling and that occurs.

  • Wifi connections in hotels

many hotels only have hispeed internet in the rooms and wifi seems only available in public areas - so when i am in my room i cannot connect to the hotel internet system - what can i do??

You actually have several options. First, learn which hotel chains have free in-room wifi. There in fact are many that do, so this is the simplest, lowest cost option. But if you want total freedom to stay in whatever hotels suit your interest, then I would suggest getting a MiFi device (from Verizon, for one). It's very compact and easy to both set up and to carry with you, even in your pocket. And recent price breaks make it relatively inexpensive if you travel often.
    Good luck.

  • I just purchased the iPad2 with wi-fi and need to know if I can connect in hotels.

I just purchased an iPad 2 with wi-fi and will be traveling to Europe and wanted to know if I will be able to connect to the Internet from hotel rooms and Internet cafes?

For some hotels, you may need an Airport Express

  • T400s crashes connecting to hotel wifi AP's

An odd issue that I'm having trouble resolving.
An employee with a T400s had a problem a month ago with his laptop crashing when trying to connect to the wifi in a hotel. Luckily there was an ethernet port in the room he was able to use, but the laptop continued having problems so I sent him a loaner overnight. When he got back I noticed the laptop was booting into safe mode but after a reboot it was fine, connecting to the office AP's fine, and everything looked good. A few days later a technician came by a couple of times and ended up swapping out the mainboard to fix a popping speaker.
This past weekend the same employee was at a different hotel and contacted me with the same problem - laptop crashing and booting into safe mode when connecting to the hotel's wifi AP. We got the laptop booting normally, had him log into a different account that ended up having the same issue, and eventually had him uninstall Access Connections and try the Windows wireless config. Same result.
Now the laptop is back in the office and I'm again having no problem with connecting to wifi here, with Windows and after installing Access Connections again. Running the latest versions of everything, Windows 7 x64 SP1 is fully updated, etc.
I scoured the Event Logs and crash reports and there is nothing indicating the case of the crashes that I can see. Whenever the computer crashes as a result of connecting to a "bad" wifi AP, the following ciritcal event is generated upon boot:

So, has anyone seen anything like this? I'm about to just purchase a new laptop for this person (Managing Director) as the last thing I need is for this to happen again as there is no sure fire way that I know of to verify that the issue has been resolved, unless this is a known issue with a fix out. Is this a known issue with the Intel Adapter (Wifi Link 5300 AGN) or drivers (or Lenovo customized drivers)? Could the adapter itself be bad?
What it bascially comes down to is: somebody has seen this and there is a way to known resolution, or I purchase a new laptop and put this one aside and work with Lenovo on it in my free time as it's still under warranty.

I just opened up the RAM/Radio compartment to remove the WWAN card as it's not needed and I noticed the WLAN card antena cables were attached incorrectly. First, only 2 of 3 were attached. Second, one of the cables attached was for the WWAN card. Apparently one of the IBM service techs decided to throw the thing together with a blindfold on after replacing some parts.
Anyway, could the antenas being connected improperly cause the WLAN adapter (or it's driver) to crash the laptop upon connecting to certain AP's?

  • Trouble connecting to Hotel Wifi

I have a 2011 Macbook pro with mountain lion and I am currently at a hotel where I am unable to connect to the wifi.   To access you select the wifi that you want and open a browser and a login page should show up to allow you to sign in.  I never get that page on Safari, Chrome or Firefox.  I know it's in the settings, because if I load windows on this computer it works fine, but I would rather use OSX.  Any ideas?
    Thanks

    From the menu bar, select
     ▹ System Preferences... ▹ Network ▹ Advanced... ▹ DNS
Under DNS Servers you should have one or more numerical addresses, such as “192.168.1.1” or “10.0.0.1”. Delete those addresses, then, in the TCP/IP tab, click Renew DHCP Lease. Close the preference pane and save the changes. Try the sign-in procedure again.

  • Safari won't connect to hotel Wifi. Chrome does

I am at the Staybridge hotel. Under Maverick, Safari connected just fine to the hotel wifi.
Now, under Yosemite, it stays stuck when the login page from the hotel is suppose to show up. Nothing happens. I open Google Chrome instead and it shows up just fine. Then I am logged in and Safari no longer gives me trouble.
    Something obviously got broken...

Some routers have browser specific login pages. I found this to be true at some Panera Breads. I've been able to use Firefox on those routers.

  • Unable to connect to hotel wifi

I have one hotel that I visit on occasion, and always have problems with the internet wifi connection. It is a major brand name hotel, and my phone and iPad (which im writing this on),connect up just fine. I have deleted the network and  restarted it but still have no connection. My MacBook pro shows strong signal strength. Any ideas what I can do on my end as I'm not sure it's the hotels issue. My fellow traveler has no problem connecting with his oc

Go to settings, general, about, and you will see "version." That will indicate what your operating system is such as 5.0.1 which is the most recent upgrade.
As for the wifi, you might try going to settings, then general, then at the bottom reset, then click on reset network settings. Back out of everything and then when you log back onto your wifi it will ask you for your local password (assuming you gave it one when your router was set up). Enter it and you should be good for go.  At least this worked for me.
    Good luck.

  • I ca not get my airport express to connect to hotel network, I ca not get my airport express to connect to hotel network

It has worked in the past. No luck today. I tried resting back tonfactory settings. Anyone have any tricks

You'll have your best chance if you configure the Express in Bridge Mode.
    AirPort Utility - Manual Setup
    Click the Internet icon
Connection Sharing = Off (Bridge Mode)
Close the browser on your Mac
Connect the Express to the Ethernet port and wait 40-45 seconds for a green light
Open your browser and the hotel's log on / agreement page will open
Hotels are getting smarter about guests connecting their own routers and some of the newer networks will simply not allow a router to connect to the network.
