I am having problems with my iPad and it looks like it's coming from my iMac because in the Network it says "Wi-Fi has the self-assigned IP address 169.254.21.127 and will not be able to connect to the Internet." but I have been connected to the internet from my iPad through my iMac for over six months, it's only since updating to Lion that the problem started. Any help please.

    I am a long way from a wi-fi expert, but.....
    You need, I think, either a router with wi-fi or an airport (express or extreme).  The iPad needs to connect to to a network.  In my case, I use an airport express and both my iMac and iPad 2 connect to the Internet through the airport device.

    Hi, it could be that the Router will not allow you onto the network..Reboot, Modem,Router & computer..

    Power-Cycle the modem.... though it looks like your internet services may have gone down.. or something else upstream has gone kaut.

    Reset the TC and make sure it is in the right mode.. ie router if you use a cable pure modem for instance.
    Or if you use a router combined modem.. put the TC in bridge mode.

    Additional things to try.
    Try this first. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
    Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.

    Another thing to try - Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.

    Note - When troubleshooting wifi connection problems, don't hold your iPad by hand. There have been a few reports that holding the iPad by hand, seems to attenuate the wifi signal.

    Clear out all your existing wifi names and passwords.. then start over.

    I'm having an issue with both my MacBook Pros at my home.  If I try to connect to the Time Capsule after coming home from work, I receive the exclamation point in my wifi status icon and this error message in my network preferences pane:
    "Wi-Fi has the self-assigned IP address 169.254.121.202 and will not be able to connect to the Internet."
    The IP address is always different, but it always gives me a subnet mask of 255.255.0.0 and no Router IP.
    This problem only seems to occur when both Macs are connecting and not connecting to the Time Capsule wifi.  That is, when my girlfriend is out of town with her MBP gone, I never seem to have the issue.
    It also seems like the first of our two to connect is the "winner" and will connect just fine, but the second one will not.  If both computers are open and waiting to connect while we power cycle the Time Capsule, it will connect without any problem.  If I then leave for work, come back home, try to connect, we have to start the same song and dance all over again.
    I've tried just renewing the IP.  I've tried restoring the factory settings on the Time Capsule.
    I have a sneaking suspicion this may have something to do with the problem: My MBP is a 3rd generation copy of the data from hers.  Hers was once my MBP, but we copied everything from it to a new MBP, which later was copied to a third MBP (the one I'm using now).

    That is interesting idea.. although the MAC address will be different I wonder if something in the GUID of the install being identical could cause issues..
    Do both laptops have the same wireless cards?? Different models came with different cards. .these can not cooperate very well.. although I have seldom heard of them fighting in quite that way.
    If you want to take the trouble.. a replacement hard drive and a new install of the OS.. see if it still happens.. how hard do you want to pursue it.
    Check the log in the TC for when you try to connect.. and see if there is a reason given for not accepting you. Did you change the laptop network name.. ie they don't both have the same name do they.. it would not work if that was the case.

    Power-down the modem, AirPort base station, and computer(s).
    Disconnect the AirPort base station from the Internet broadband modem.
    While all of the devices are powered-down, perform a "factory default" reset on the base station. This will get it back to its "out-of-the-box" configuration and make setting it up much easier, especially if you use the "Assist me" process within the AirPort Utility. (ref: Resetting an AirPort Base Station or Time Capsule)
    After the base station resets, go ahead and power it back down.
    Reconnect the AirPort base station to the Internet broadband modem. For the Extreme and Time Capsule, be sure to connect the cable to the base station's WAN (circle-of-dots) port.
    Power-up the modem; wait at least 10-15 minutes to allow it adequate time to initialize.
    Power-up the AirPort base station; wait at least 5-10 minutes. Note: The AirPort's status light may continue to flash amber after it has intialized. That is because, there may be some additional configuration items necessary, like setting up wireless security, before the overall setup is completed to get a green status.
    Power-up your computer(s).
    In this basic configuration, the AirPort base station will broadcast an unsecured wireless network with a Network Name (SSID) of Apple Network NNNNNN. Network clients, connected to the base station either by wire or wireless, should now be able to access the Internet through the ISP's modem. Once Internet connectivity has been verified, you can use the AirPort Utility to configure the base station for wireless security and any other desired options. Please post back your results.

    First, try restarting the router. If there's no change, hold down the option key and select the Wi-Fi menu in the menu bar. What value is shown for Security?

    Hi, the one below worked for my case.
    I beleive there are different reasons for this problem. In my case, doing try and error, I found a solution for my case (at the ver end of this post). The reason I say this is because I had the same problem and googled the problem for quite a while ... none of the suggested solutions worked for me, although it seems like they worked for others in some cases. I tired taking my computer to different wifi networks (mainly unprotected ... ie no WAP) and alwasy got the same problem. I even took the computer to apple and no luck ... surprisely when I took it to apple it did connect to apple's wifi network in the store, so according to them it was probably some problem with my network ... when I walked out of the store I tried connecting to another open network in the mall and got the same problem ... went back to apple and they tried a few things without any luck (however it would connect to apple's network)
    Of all the solutions I read the one that made more sense for me was the one related to keychain access, although in my case I had the problem trying to get into an unprotected network, which at some point was protected.
    So this is what I did: among other things I compared the keychain access file with that from another macbook that was working ok, and I noticed that although my wifi network is unprotected there was an entry for it in the keychain access list (maybe from the time that I had the network protected with the deafult config from the router). So I went to network preferences on the computer that had the problem, went to advanced and selected the name of my network (configured without security), and changed it to WAP personnal security, and entered the previous access code from my router --- the same configured in the other mac keychain file ---. This created an entry for my network in the keychain access file, just as it showed in the other macbook. I then went back to network preference and change the configuration of my network back without security. AND NOW it is working, NO MORE SELF ASSIGNED IP ADDRESS.  (remember that I actually I never really changed the configuration of my wifi router to make the network secured ... actually I didn't touch it at all .... well I did before some days ago trying to follow some of the suggested solutions, doing things like power cycle, reset to factory default etc, etc, which never worked)

    Sorry we have no info.. so description of the problem..
    Are you using wireless? If so on what? Do you have a TC?
    Is this a new TC and failed to setup correctly? Or you have TC or some other wireless router that has been working fine and now failed?
    Plug in by ethernet? Does it now work?
    Reboot the TC.. Does it now work?
    Reboot the whole network.. restart in order.. modem.. router.. TC.. whatever other network equipment.. clients.
    Do some clients work and others fail?
    Press and hold reset on the TC. Redo the setup.. change the TC setup to fixed channels and SMB names.
    We cannot give specific answers to such vague faults.
