Wi-fi in public place

I am unable to connect to wi-fi while using my touch in a public place but my friend is sitting next to me and hers is connected all the time. I can't see where any of our settings are different so I don't understand what the problem is. Any suggestions?

Is it a "remembered" network? If so, forget the network (in Settings), turn off Wifi, turn Wifi back on, and rediscover the network.
If that does not work, restart your iPod. I mean hold the top button until you get the option to power off, then power it back on, and try.

Depends on the wireless hotspot you are at.
Usually from the Airport icon in the menu bar, select the hotspot name.
You will then to either
a) start surfing as this is an open free network
b) enter the password which you will need to get from the owner of the hotspot
c) open a browser (Safari) and log into the hotspot paying for it if required by credit card or pre-paid card

I concur with Dahveed. While the risk may be relatively small if as he says the site is secure (which means that the communication is encrypted and hence would be very difficult to intercept and decode), it is still a risk. It's even not unimaginable that someone could just be looking over your shoulder, or using a video camera, and capturing your password. It's not worth it, to my mind. Better to wait until you're home or otherwise in a private space with a WiFi connection you, or someone you trust, controls.

How to protect my files in a public place

Hi there,
I wish to use my iTunes library in a public area. Is there any way I can 'lock' my library & prevent someone from copying my stuff i.e. flash drive, burn cd's, iPod hook up or even via the windows (XP) OS desktop.
The thing is I can't be around my laptop @ various times, so I'd like some assurance of protecting my music.

iTunes allows you to password protect your shared library when it is shared over a network.
However, it sounds like you are trying to lock the computer, entirely. For that you may want to consider the security options in your Windows-based PC's Operating System, or a third party utility.
If this was a Mac, we would have options in the Security under System Preferences

Why am I unable to connect to free Wi-Fi in public places?

How come I am not able to use my iTouch wi-fi in places that offer free wi-fi? All I get is a little pop-up box that tells me that it cannot initialize wi-fi.
I can use the wi-fi feature with my airport on my home computer, but that's it.
I am a little disappointed that I cannot connect to any places (coffee shops, grocery stores, etc...) that offer free wi-fi....but wouldn't be surprised if it is something I am doing.
I have my iTouch turned on to detect new networks, everything is updated, etc., too. Thanks

Many "free" WiFi sites require that you accept their terms and conditions before you are granted full access. If you are running any of the 3.0 versions, this acceptance page usually pops up in a browser like window. If you are running 2.x you will have to go to Safari - usually refreshing whatever page opens up will bring up the access points terms and conditions page.

Using IPads in public places.

I have a couple questions:
I work at a technical college and we have some IPads we are going to use in the library. Is there any software or a software setting on the IPad that will use a kiosk or public mode? We are going to let students check out IPads and use Microsoft Office 365.
Also, with Office 365 requires sign in usage of a Microsoft Account for Word, Excel, Powerpoint. Is there a way to use this software to make sure data isn't saved to the IPad between student usage or does it require some other kind of kiosk software?

First what you want to do is connect to your wireless connection .
Click On Settings>WiFi>Turn WiFi ON. Make sure you are connecting to YOUR wireless connection , check what is the name of your ssid(wireless name) on your router.
Before you connect to your wireless connection check if your connection is secured or not. To do that follow, the steps above once you found your wireless.
If there is a LOCK image that means your connection is secured, from this point you want to get that WEP or WAP key from your wireless router.
Connecting to your wireless network with Ipod Touch
If asked for password enter your WEP or WAP key and click on Join button, wait few moments and then see if you are connected. Test with your safari browser.
Can't connect to wireless network?
Few things you can check:
Did you get an IP address from your wireless router?
Unplug the power from your router shut down your ipod touch. Plug back in your router first, then wait for 1 minute and then turn on your Ipod Touch.
with the router been in a cafe airport etc you need to ask them to reset there router
You are not getting an IP at all?
Are you sure you are connected to your wireless router?
Does your router have MAC address filtering On?
Did you enter correct Password (WEP-WAP key)?
Few more things to check...
Does your homepage work?
Did you try yahoo.com google.com ebay.com etc?
How about your YouTube do you get any videos?

Strange - Home wireless network ok, no access Public networks

Ok, I'm not getting this, and I've been around computers for some time.
Got my B570 'round September last year. Worked great on home wireless network ( Brighthouse networks in Florida, with Ubee Wireless modem running Lightning or 40mb.)
Had to move to new place offering a house offering of wifi, had a bear getting that up, but finally did.
Here's the q, and I've seen this on an HP laptop running Vista, but that one died and I got this one.
Go to Starbucks, Panera's, Dennys or just about any other public place, and I can see the routers and even connect, but can't get anywhere on the internet. I get either a limited or no internet, or identifying, but that's it. I know that their router is working because i can make the wifi connection on my phone and browse no problem, and I see other patrons with different computers logged in at the same time.
McDonalds, I can get in, and soon as the network connection comes up, browser will pop up and allow me to accept McD's access rights page and I can connect. I know that Denny's has one too, but it doesnt pop up, and ( I know that this will sometimes happen too ) if I try to connect to a website, sometimes the local accept page will pop up, but usually not for me.
I have Google Chrome as my primary web browser, but even if I try to bring up via IE, no go.
I can connect to the internet via my droid phone usb wired or just wireless, but don't like that to be a regular solution.
I've already tried to update the wireless driver ( Broadcomm ), but computer tells me that i'm up to date. Enabled then re enabled. Flush DNS didn't help either, ipconfig / release and renew didn't do it either. Using Comodo Internet Security, and turned it off, even exited out of program and that didn't help either.
Today was an interesting day. went to Denny's thinking I'd get some work done, and couldn't get logged in. Went to Fedex Store to get some printing done, and logged in right away. Came home and can log into the communities public ( fee based ) network and can log right in. Looked in my bag and found a usb wifi dongle I had used for the HP when the wifi on it died out, but didn't try that yet. I'd rather not, I'd rather find out why the wifi on this laptop seems to be finiky with who's networks I'm using.
Any ideas would be appreciated.

The issue you're facing is a very strange issue. From what i gather ist begging to choose the network it wants to work with. I may need more time to look inot his to see if it is a harware issue. But i would like to try something though. You may want to uncheck the IPV6 in ur Wireless network properties.
To do that you will have to go to your "Network sharing centre" > Click on "Change adapter settings" on the left hand panel > Highlight "Wireless network Connection" > Right Click "Wireless network Connection" and select on "Properties". Be sure to uncheck the "Internet protocol version 6 (TCP/IPV6)". Then click on and try to reconnect.

Slow at public libraries mystery

my site reportedly works swell on Safari, IE at folks homes, and Firefox but...crashes or is super slow at public libraries, tested in two different counties
at the same time Amazon open fast enough at the library, so I can't blame the library's servers
if you want to hear the mystery, heres the full story
My relatively simple site is 30 pages, each page has several Jpegs and I actually made text as images, to hopefully avoid text compatibility/ misplaced issues. Lotta boxes with color and stuff, but no slide shows, moving parts, blogs, RSS.
My site tested great in Firefox and Safari, about 8 seconds to load a page. I went to the library last night, to test IE7 and the home page was all weird. Reworked it by moving things slightly, made little sense, but worked.
Next day I got my first crash report, a friend at a different public library, using IE 7. Not sure if it crashed or just very slow to load. Went back to my public library, running IE7, late afternoon, my pages took 45-80 seconds to load. Librarians suggested server getting heavy use, but I timed Amazon's site and it took 8 seconds to load. Went home checked again on Safari and Firefox( I clear cache everytime) took 8 seconds.
Next I called friends running IE7, all have DSL/ Cable and most pages took 8 seconds to load. Called my server, they tested it on all browsers at 8 seconds.
So the mystery is... why is it crashing library computers,they are not dial up, or if not crashing, then unreasonably slow to load. Can't be the server cause Amazon loads fine on those computers.
I plan to strip down my site and see if it makes a difference. I do not have any slideshows, just a fair amount of images, each page totals up to 5-800kb.
I do not want to blow off library users, not an option. Would like my site to be efficient for everybody.

my library is super funded, up to date and super tight with the controls,
I doubt one can change any settings on those boxes, heck an alarm would prob go off ;-))
Even tho library patrons are not my core aud, I don't want to forget about library users,
I am often when when I travel !!
I suspect the solution may be as simple as just minimizing my page file sizes,
but I am wondering if there is another reason IE7 at libraries is too slow to load my site
maybe comparing amazon is not a good test,
what I will do next is check out other large graphic sites and see if they are slow to load,
if they load quick then I will be convinced its something in my site
good advice to ask strangers to check my site !
will head to a few other public places next week, my town not too wired though

To date, the iPad/iPad mini/iPhone/iPod Touch produces have remained secure.
In a public place, you do not control the network, so be careful of what activities you perform, such as accessing your bank, or other sensitive places.
Just surfing and reading your email is generally speaking not a problem. Hopefully, your email connections are over secure SSL connections.

Connected to public wifi but still safari is not connected to internet

can someone help me to my iphone, i dont have a router at home, so that i always go to mall to connect to wifi but when im connected ti it and open my safari still says that im not connect to internet. im reseting the settings but still it doesnt work.. how will i fix this..? i cannot us my ipod touch capabilty..

Most public places require that you agree to their terms and conditions prior to allowing you full access. Next time you connect, tap Settings > WiFi > and then tap the blue ">" next to the network with a check mark. Tap Forget this Network.
Then tap Settings > WiFi and let the touch find the network. Tap on the name to connect and then wait for 20-30 seconds. If the network requires you to agree to Terms and Conditions, a Safari-like page will open up that allows you to do that.

Wireless Homegroup connections ok, cannot connect in Public

Wireless access works perfectly in various Home networks, but when trying to connect in a Public place, all I get is a white empty window even though I show "connected" with plenty of bars. Problem exists for ANY public places I have

Firstly, check if you configuration is as below:
1. Click Open Network and Sharing Center from bottom-right network icon;
2. Click Change adapter settings;
3. Right click connection that you want to change, and then click Properties. Administrator permission required If you're prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
4.Click the Networking tab. Under This connection uses the following items, click either
Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) or Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6), and then click
Properties.
5.To specify IPv4 IP address settings, do one of the following:
To get IP settings automatically using DHCP, click Obtain an IP address automatically, and then click
OK.
6.To specify IPv6 IP address settings, do one of the following:
To get IP settings automatically using DHCP, click Obtain an IPv6 address automatically, and then click
OK.
7.To specify DNS server address settings, do one of the following:
To get a DNS server address automatically using DHCP, click Obtain DNS server address automatically, and then click

If the issue still persists, try to delete all network connection, and then retry:
1. Click Start and select Control Panel.
2. Open Network and Sharing Center.
3. Click Manage Wireless Networks.
4. Remove all wireless network listed in this list.
5. Restart computer and reconnect to your wireless network
If the problem can't be resolved, run ipconfig /all command, attach the output in your reply.

IPhone can't connect to wi-fi when in public:

All of a sudden my phone won't allow me to use Pandora while driving. It will also not let me search for anything on Google, watch Hulu or Netflix, access Wells Fargo app or anything that requires an internet connection while in public places. This was never an issue before and just started last night. I haven't done anything new or done any recent updates. Has anyone had a similar issue, or does anyone know how to fix this?? Any help is greatly appreciated.

When driving you would need cellular, may consider calling your cellular provider about that.
