Wi Fi/Wireless dongle confusion

I am on option 2 which gives a number of minutes a month free via wi fi as we all know.
I have now purchased a wireless dongle which I can pay for a certain amount of usage per pound.
If I use the dongle, does the free minutes given per month when using wi fi count
ie using the wireless dongle uses up the free minutes as well as costing for the dongle use. Or is the dongle use a separate entity altogether &doesn't touch the free wi fi minutes ?
Any advice will be grtefully received

But I don't know what to do next...
    what I've done:
    1.uninstall ndiswrapper
    2.download firmware http://jbnote.free.fr/prism54usb/data/f … .5.8.0.arm ,and rename it as "isl3887usb_bare" ,copy it into /lib/firmware
3.add "ndiswrapper" into mod_blacklist and "p54usb" into modules

From what I understood you need ndiswrapper to run the wireless card. Is it posible to do it natively. Its been a while since I've used ndiswrapper but it seems the kernel is already recognising the wireless card. Uninstall ndiswrapper and see if the system does load it manually. Otherwise I would recomend you post this on the ndiswrapper forums.

  • Launch Application if Wireless Dongle is Connected

    Hello,
I haven't searched if this has been done before (it probably has) because I don't even know what to search for really. I have zero experience with applescript and only a little familiarity with programming languages. Basically in words the summary of what I want the script to do.
If 802.11 n WLAN (my USB dongle for Wireless n) is connected
Launch the application "NewerTech USB Wireless Utility.app"
    And turn off airport
    Else turn on airport
    Thanks for your help.
    -Chris

You could use something like Marco Polo which is a software utility that can identify attached USB devices. Is a powerful application try it.
It's not an AppleScript solution, but it may do what you're looking for.

  • Problems getting rt73 wireless dongles to work

Wireless USB: Belkin F5D7050 Ver. 3000 (rt73 chipset)
    Wireless USB: D-Link DWL-G122 Rev. C1 (rt73 chipset)
Router: Linksys WRT54G (B+G Channel 8 DHCP Enabled WPA TKIP)
    Kernel: 2.6.20-ARCH
    CPU: Athlon XP 2200+ 1.8ghz
At the moment I have the Belkin device working fine under the latest ndiswrapper for a certain amount of time until websites will stop resolving after a while with the only way to fix it being to reboot or go downstairs and reset the router. I don't care too much which dongle I get working although I would prefer the Belkin since I already have that working in Windows. Obviously I'm only plugging them in one at a time. I've tried multiple combinations in my resolv.conf and followed numerous guides to make sure my network profiles and wpa_supplicant are set up right although I can post them for you to check. I couldn't find a working .sys file for the D-Link device under ndiswrapper so basically what I am trying to say is ndiswrapper is out of the question and need to get native drivers working.  They are both editions which have an rt73 chipset even though some devices with the same model use 2500. I looked it up and the Ubuntu wiki incidentally uses both these devices as an example so I know for sure that they should work with RT73_Linux_STA_Drv1.0.3.6 tar.
I have followed the steps in the Arch Wiki guide carefully. http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/RT73_Wireless
However when I cd to the module directory after making the required modifications and do a make as root I get errors which is disappointing as by all accounts I have read so far it should work. I get errors compiling the RT73_CVS_Daily package as well but I think that was something to do with incompatibility with SMP and the need for a kernel recompile. The Arch Wiki method seems my best bet still. Here is the error I am getting on compilation anyway:

What could this mean? Looking over it I've just spotted a permission denied in there even though I'm running it as root so now I'm wondering if there is some sort of resource conflict because ndiswrapper is still loaded in memory. I really don't understand why this wouldn't work. This is way above my skills so please help.

    Hi,
    I also have a rt73 chip - edimax EW-7318UG.
I used this package from aur :
    http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?d … s=0&SeB=nd
and now I have the module. Maybe it will work for you as well.
My problem seems to be setting up the interface. I can set it up to run manually - using ifconfig and iwconfig but it seems I can't load the network on startup. I keep getting this response form the startup network script :
Error for wireless request "Set Mode" (8B06) :
SET failed on device rausb0 ; Network is down.
I have to run manually each time :
    [root@fort etc]# ifconfig rausb0 up
    [root@fort etc]# iwconfig rausb0 essid mikahome
    [root@fort etc]# dhcpcd rausb0
Anyone knows if this can be automated?

  • BT Wireless Dongle

Woke up today to randomly find I got sent a BT Wireless 802.11ac USB Dongle. I never ordered it or even knew it existed, so do you think I will get charged for this?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Did it have an order receipt with your name and address on it showing how it was paid for?
I doubt you will be charged because I would imagine it had to be paid for by credit/debit card if ordered from the BT shop. It is likely there is a guy somewhere cursing because he has ordered a dongle that he has been charged for and never received.
It's up to you but if there is a contact address or phone number it might be the decent thing to contact them and tell them what has happened.

  • Weird question - bluetooth / wireless dongles

    hi all
has anyone every heard of a usb-based device that you plug into the usb port of your peripheral and transfers data to your computer wirelessly? via bluetooth or wifi perhaps, or maybe such a product would use a dongle pair. so you'd plug one dongle into your printer and one into your computer and make them talk, so your printer works just like usually except there's no cables.
I guess this is relevant to the apple forums because if such a product did exist, it would have to be mac compatible for me!
    cheers, S

I think it just hasn't caught on yet or there isn't that much market for it. Do some of these products seem to be what you are looking for?
After a bit more research, it seems that the Bluetooth "HCRP (Hardcopy Cable Replacement Profile)" is what you are looking for. I think that, in theory of course, if your printer/scanner/etc supports bluetooth, you can use it as if it were connected via cable. I have heard of bluetooth printers, but not scanners. If there was peripheral support, with some driver magic, it should work the way you expect it. Perhaps you just need to give it a few more years to perculate.

  • Netgear wireless dongle - settings in 'Network'...?

I had my Netgear WT111v2 working intermittently on my Mac Pro - but now it seems to not work at all...There are 10.5 drivers (Im 10.5.6) and the Netgear software comes up and actually shows the wireless connection working. The problem is - I dont think OSX is recognising the connection - as internet explorer and software update both say there is no internet connection. I suspect my Network settings are not correct - but have no idea what I have to do to sync up the Netgear software app -> OSX network settings...
    Can anyone offer any advice?
    Thanks!

    thanks so much
I have moved the ethernet to the top of the service order...
Terrible mistake - I meant Safari not IE!
In the past - when the dongle has worked - when I open safari - it loads. However at the mo - nothing...here you can hopefully see the Netgear (status bar showing connection to wifi), Network windows...

  • Wireless Dongle

    Hi guys,
My airport hasn't worked for a while and I've had to use an ethernet cable to connect to the internet.
If I buy this http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0035FVL4G can I plug it straight in and it will connect to the router?
    Thanks,

Welcome to the forum. New laptops don't necessary support 5GHz wireless - my high-spec Yoga 2 doesn't but I have no issues with the 2.4GHz band anyway. You should be able to return the dongle within 14 days for a refund under the Consumer Contracts Regulations; if so I would put the money towards a Windows upgrade because you're going to get more and more problems sticking with XP.

  • Can't get dlink dwa-125 usb wireless dongle to work

Hi, I'm installing arch on my parents PC.  I want them to try linux out but I've got a couple problems.
    1)  Firstly I can't get our dlink dwa-125 dongle to work.  I checked aur out and saw that there was a package for a kernel driver, but it wouldn't install.  So I got stuck there, I wasn't able to figure out how to compile the module myself.  I tried downloading the source code from ralink  http://eng.ralinktech.com.tw/support.php?s=2 .  The version I require is for the rt3070.
    2) I can't get the webcam to work in skype, it's a quickcam pro 5000.  The camera works fine in luvcview and cheese, when I click on test in skype the camera led turns on but no picture, when I double click to get fullscreen it's just grey. I followed the guide here https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Webcam_Setup  and I tried
    export XLIB_SKIP_ARGB_VISUALS=1
before starting skype but it didn't help.
Hope someone can help me get these two things running then my parents won't have a reason to keep starting windows.

    1) you need to blacklist the rt3070 drivers. maybe this helps: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1289917
