Wicd = Bad password, but wpa_supplicant connects fine

I have a working wireless connection using wpa_supplicant and the network daemon, it comes up at boot fine.  I'd like to use wicd instead but it won't connect.  The config file that wicd generates differs from my working wpa_supplicant.conf but I don't see any way to override what it uses.
I'm running Arch64 and wicd-1.6.0-2.
My working wpa_supplicant setup:
$ cat /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf
psk="this is secret"
$ cat /etc/rc.conf
NETWORKS=(!dhcp_wired wireless)
DAEMONS=(syslog-ng hal network !wicd net-profiles netfs crond alsa)
The config that wicd generates when using WPA 1/2 (Preshared Key):
$ cat /var/lib/wicd/configurations/001d7eff6a78
proto=WPA RSN
pairwise=CCMP TKIP
psk="this is secret"
$ cat /etc/rc.conf
NETWORKS=(!dhcp_wired !wireless)
DAEMONS=(syslog-ng hal !network wicd net-profiles netfs crond alsa)
Using WPA 1/2 (Passphrase) results in an unquoted hexidecimal psk, and still doesn't work.
Running wicd-client just gives a list of detected ssids in the logging, including:
ESSID : <hidden>
Any ideas how to get wicd connecting?

Please file a bug report on the project site of wicd. It seems that this is an upstream issue. You can find a similar problem on the wicd forum here: http://wicd.net/punbb/viewtopic.php?id=591
Answer from one of the developers (the network card driver was a ath5k):
I think this is an issue with your wireless card drivers. Most do not deal well with hidden ESSIDs. Since hiding the ESSID gives you no advantage, you should just make the access point visible. That will solve the problem.

  • Wifi - Touch doesn't accept password but then connects anyway...

    I've just bought a 32gb 3rd gen Touch.
    When trying to connect to my home network after entering the network password I get "Unable to connect to the network 'Network name'". When I dismiss this message for some reason the Touch then connects to the wi-fi perfectly. However the connection seems to get lost everytime the Touch is left for a few minutes and 'goes to sleep'. The password then needs to be entered again to reconnect - with the same problem again...
    For what it's worth a friend was able to connect his 2nd gen Touch with no problems to my home wi-fi connection which makes me think it's not a problem with router settings.
    My Touch connects fine to the wifi network in the Apple Store in London (which does not need a password). Following discussion with a member of staffthere I've tried turning on MAC filtering, but this makes no difference.
    Any help much appreciated!

    Agreed - I think the router is the problem - the user in from the above link who's having the same problem as me is also on Orange broadband with a Siemens Gigaset SE572.
    The only thing that is slightly odd is that a friend of mine had no problems at all connecting to my wireless with his 2nd gen Touch...
    I find that odd, considering you say you have MAC address filtering turned ON... that should mean that any friends would NOT be able to connect at all! Maybe the Siemens MAC address filtering is buggy and affecting how you connect with the WPA password... wipe out all devices in the MAC address list AND turn it OFF. Do BOTH in case it's flaky... then reboot router to be sure.
    I've seen my Netgear do some very strange things with two seemingly unrelated settings were activated in combination. I've also seen my Belkin act like a firewall between wired & wireless devices on the same side of the LAN! (known bug for that model rev).
    You also have no problem connecting your iPod to other Wifi networks which would again point to your router.
    This Siemens Router is also a DSL modem? If so, another option you might have is to go in and turn off the wifi entirely... just use the Siemens as a DSL modem... then connect a brand new wireless router to your LAN to handle the Wifi traffic.
    Ideally, as stated before, MAC address filtering is useless as a security measure. Leave it OFF to reduce complexity... then use a WPA2 password for maximum secure data encryption.

  • Correct network name, correct password but no connection: Connect an ipod touch to a hidden WPA2 personal network (in Japan)

    I am in Japan now and am trying to connect to a hidden wpa2 personal enabled network.
    I cannot connect even with the correct network name and password: on the Wi-fi section in Settings, the busy wheel keeps going round and round next to the network name (which I have entered) and never actually connects...
    Other advice on the internet tells me how to connect, but does not address this problem.
    My PC connects just fine. Is there anything I can do for my ipod touch (4th gen)? Or should I simply give up?
    Changing up the network (i.e. unhiding it, resetting the router, etc.) is not an option, unfortunately.
    Any help will be appreciated!
    I'll be here for a few weeks (and will come here again) so I'm ready to try different solutions.

    Well I just checked out my network settings and I don't even have a sercurity on my network so I guess that isn't my problem. Unless I'm doing something wrong. I'm wondering if my router is simply to old for the new update.

  • How to connect my iMac G4 to my network, it wont let me something about the password but I connect to a open network???Ask your question.

    Hello I have been trying to connect my iMac G4 to my network but I can't. I have a secure network with a password and is not let me in but I can connect to an open network with no password??? anybody can help???

    AirPort card in iMac G4 does not support strong WiFi encryption.
    I think WPA is the maximum for that WiFi card.
    If you have WPA2 in your WiFi network, you need to downgrade (not recommended)or wired connect the iMac G4.

TC is connected to orange livebox and PC to TC, internet works well on PC via TC (Ethernet connection, PC has no wireless).
    Tried several setting changes but dont get there. Bonjour installed, sharing over WAN activeted, researched since quiet some time but stuck now...
    Any help is welcomed

    Welcome to the discussion area, robired!
    You may do better to re-post your question in the AirPort for Windows Forum. The PC guys hang out over there and may have some suggestions for you.
    If you haven't already checked, the two most common problems with a PC trying to join a wireless network are that the Windows Firewall and/or the anti-virus software blocks the connection. Check those applications on your PC to see if you can tell them to "allow" the connection.

  • Untrusted Connection error message on home computer, but can connect fine from work

    I have been connecting to this site for a while without problems (an online gradebook for son's school), but yesterday when I tried to log in from home machine, I got the "This connection is Untrusted" error message. However, I was able to log in without a problem from work today, but having the same problem at home again. Is it an indication that my home connection is somehow compromised? How do I check? Other sites seem to working fine.

    It is usually better to install missing certificates by visiting another website that sends them then by making an exception.<br />
    You can check the certificate chain on the working computer by clicking the Site Identity Button (favicon) on the location bar > More Information > View Certificate > Details and export missing intermediate certificates and import them on the other computer.
    You can remove exceptions on the Servers tab in the Certificate Manager.
    *Tools > Options > Advanced : Encryption: Certificates - View Certificates

  • Websites timing out but current connections fine

    Sort of a weird problem. All of a sudden you will not be able to open up any websites, or log into anything, but if you are already say signed into msn you don't get booted off. I am running a WRT-54G V6 wireless router. When the problem occurs I try pinging the gateway address but don't get anything back.

    hi ,
    first off , ensure that everything works fine when connected to the modem....if yes, try upgrading / reflashing the router's firmware .. after the upgrade, reset and reconfigure the router....

  • I have an iPad mini iphone 5 and have just bought an Apple TV can I get the Apple TV to connect to the Bluetooth on my sofa have been trying with no success my phone and iPad connect fine please help.

    Can't get my Apple TV to connect to the Bluetooth on my sofa but it connects fine with iPhone iPad mini etc

    Bluetooth in the AppleTV is for connecting to Bluetooth keyboards, and also for Airplay device discovery only.
    Unless your sofa supports Airplay (unlikely) or has a bluetooth keyboard, your AppleTV won't be able to connect to it.

    - Reset the iPod. nothing is lost
    Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
    least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Power off and then back on your router

    Any ideas? Have tried usual switching on and off again but no change

    Here’s what you need to do to turn on AirPlay Mirroring on your iPad 2:
    – Have iOS 5 installed on your iPad 2
    – Make sure your Apple TV software is up-to-date. You can check for updates on the Apple TV by going to Settings > General > Update Software.
    – Have your TV turned with Apple TV active and showing.
    – Double-tap the home button on the iPad to bring up the Multitasking Bar.
    – Swipe to move to the left of the Multitasking Bar, so you can see the set of controls just to the left of the volume adjustment slider.
    – The button just to the right of the Fast Forward button – the one that has a rectangle with a solid, upward-facing arrow in it – is the AirPlay button. Tap to switch from iPad to Apple TV.
    – Once you do that you’ll see the Mirroring section appear just below the entry for Apple TV. Just tap to turn that On, and the iPad 2 will immediately begin mirroring to your TV screen.

  • Why do I get "Unknown user name or bad password" on Windows 7 when trying to connect to an SMB share on my Mac?

    Before installing the update to 10.7.3 I could connect to an SMB share on my Mac from Windows 7 but I can't any longer. When I try I get the error "Unknown user name or bad password" on the Windows 7 system.
    When I try to connect using the "net use..." command I get the error: "System error 86 has occurred".
    Does anyone know how to resolve this? What really confuses me is that it was working fine until I installed the update to 10.7.3.

    Check the Wins Tab in the Advanced section of Network in system preferences.
    If you don't have the same workgroup name and the correct NetBIOS name showing up in the WINS tab you will get the Bad username or password.
    I know I deal with this everyday.
    There is something wrong with Lion and it does not automatically fill in those entries in the WINS tab.
    What I have to do on every reboot/startup is open System preferences go to Sharing and uncheck File Sharing then recheck it. That will fill in the WINS tab entries.
