Wich Caching Proxy would be suiteable for Windows 7 Professional Server

I got the following setup:
3 Computer Rooms for Trainign Purposes.
18 PC per room, one of them a Server. All but the Server are protected by Steady State Software (DeepFreeze), with them getting thawed every 1-3 months for Windows and software updates. The only thing allowed to auto-update is the Virus scanner (MS Security
Essentials).
The Server and all Computers are "only" Windows 7 Professional (no real server OS among them).
I managed to minimise the Internet Load for updates by orgianising Offline installers for the software that had them.
But Windows Updates and some of the Adobe Photoshop Updates don't want to be easily accesible offline.
The only thing I can effectively do for those would be a Cachign Proxy. Aside from MSE definitions (multiple updates per day possible), most of the files will be only updated every month or so.
It also does not need to cache normal Internet Traffic, only large files like updates. Maybe only towards very specific servers (like the MS and Adobe update servers).
What options for a caching Proxy server do I have in this scenario?

As I understand it:
If the programm uses the WinINET settings at all (not many do nowadays), the settings is per user. But you can force a system wide value via registery entry.
I asume windows update will use that setting (I read often about having to change odd users proxy settings before). The WU Service runs under the "Local System" Account in a non-interactive session.
So either changing the proxy settings of Local System or setting the OS to use a global setting should redirect it. So it is possible to redirect the Updater (even background downloaders) to use a proxy server.
I would still need a proxy server I can run on a mere Win 7 Pro. Ideally one I can tell to only cache for specific domains/ip adresses* (the one of the Update servers for Adobe and Windows, for example).
And google will result in me hitting links taking about Proxies run by other people before it will ever give me a list of availible server softwares and thier pro/con's.
*I can get those IP adresses/domains either via wireshark or the resource monitor of Windows. So finding out where the data comes from is the least of my worries.
In the meantime I looked into wsus offline updater. While it cannot cover the regular MSE or the odd Adobe updates, it can still handle the bulk of data.

    Hi:
Your PC is not supported by HP for any operating system other than those listed on your PC' support and driver page:
Install the chipset driver first, then graphics, then network.
    http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareIndex.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&prodNameId=3577715&...
I would install as many of the 2003 server drivers as will work for your PC.
For any that won't install, please click on each device in the device manager. Then click on the details tab.
Post the top string of characters you see there.
Those will ID the missing devices and I will try and find XP Pro drivers for them.

    Hi Rohit,
Thanks for reminding the HTTPS option under Administration Control on ACS.
I have some doubts pertaining to installation of certificates on Wireless clients though it is optional for Self Generated Certificates but what in case of Mirosoft CA as I tested wireless client authentications even after removing the certificate from microsoft supplicant WindowsXP SP2 having installed the patch KB885453 for PEAP. How the certificate on wireless client works.
Is it mandatory or optional to keep certificate on Wireless Clients as they could able to get authenticated through ACS after removing the certificate.

  • Subnet config and switch layout for windows 2012 ISCSI server

I would like to ask about subnet design and switch layout in regards to using a Windows 2012 ISCSI solution. When you guys design subnets for ISCSI configurations do you use one subnet or multiple subnets?  Also do you link the switches together when
designing your ISCSI layouts? These types of things are normally discussed in vendor deployment guides.  However, I have not come across a best practices guide for deploying Server 2012 ISCSI.

For iSCSI you typically create a separate subnets around physical NICs you use for iSCSI traffic (assuming they are used by iSCSI target for MPIO of course). Here are few guides on how to do that (some for Windows Server 2008 R2 but you can ignore that fact
as target itself did not change much and concepts are still the same). See:
Configure iSCSI MPIO on Windows (full)
    http://blogs.technet.com/b/migreene/archive/2009/08/29/3277914.aspx
(make sure you have at leas one connection before you try to enable MPIO)
Setting up a Target and Initiator
    http://www.server-log.com/blog/2011/7/26/setting-up-an-microsoft-iscsi-target-and-initiator-using-mpi.html
You need however be aware of a couple of facts...
    1) MSFT does not see much future in iSCSI and is replacing it with SMB3 where it can. So if you want to use iSCSI to provide shared storage to your guest VMs you need to use shared VHDX hosted on SMB3 share, see:
Shared VHDX for guest VM Cluster
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dn265980.aspx
If you plan to use iSCSI to host CSV and VM images there you again can use SMB3 share, see:
    Hyper-V over SMB
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj134187.aspx
That's both simpler to manage (you don't configure anything except teaming for NICs to enable SMB Multichannel and create a shared folder in a few clicks) and faster: MSFT iSCSI target is not cached @ server side while (OK, Hyper-V ovens VMs in a pass-thru
mode but other users typically don't do that). SQL Server is the same as Hyper-V in terms of SMB3 support, Windows clusters support SMB3 share as a witness and so on.
    2) That's a single point of failure. Think about using SoFS instead of a single SMB3 share and think about clustering your target (you'll need a separate fault tolerant back end of that) to increase uptime. See:
    MSFT iSCSI Target Failover Cluster
    http://techontip.wordpress.com/2011/05/03/microsoft-iscsi-target-cluster-building-walkthrough/
    Good luck! :)
StarWind VSAN [Virtual SAN] clusters Hyper-V without SAS, Fibre Channel, SMB 3.0 or iSCSI, uses Ethernet to mirror internally mounted SATA disks between hosts.

The Calendar SDK was only certified for the platforms you list, although I don't expect you would encounter any platform-specific problems using it on Windows 2000 or XP. That said, those platforms are not officially supported for 9.0.4.2, with all that implies.
The upcoming 9.0.5 release should be certified for Windows 2000 (only - and, of course, subject to change up until it actually ships).

  • Is it appropriate to apply the hardening settings for Windows 2008 R2 server to Windows 2008 server?

We would like to adopt the hardening recommendation for Windows 2008 R2 from CIS to all our DC servers. However, but then we found some of our DC in remote sites are Windows 2008 server only.
Is the hardening settings from Windows 2008 R2 from CIS also applicable to Windows 2008 DC?
    Thanks for your attention.

Yes, this should be fine. Hardening only specific security settings, registry keys etc and there's not much difference if you consider hardening.
Just for reference, here's the difference between 2008 and R2 :

  • Missing drivers for Windows 7 Professional with BootCamp.

I have a brand new MB Pro with 13" Retina, late 2013, 250 GB SS-disk, 8 GB RAM.
I need a partition with Windows 7 Professional, and I have an ISO with Norwegian Windows 7, service pack 1.
I run the BootCamp assistant to partition my HDD and to generate the USB-disk with Windows and the necessary drivers.
When i try to install Windows the Windows installer asks for a driver for the DVD-drive. I get a message that it cannot find a driver file and tells me to provide one. There is no DVD so that is correct. There is no way I can skip this part, and I must stop the intallation. I have not been able to trace down any dummy-drivers.
I have also tried to do this procedure with a USB-Superdrive attatched, but that did not help.

I am sorry, but this does not help me. I have tried. Or should I unpack all files to the top-level? I kept the folder structure.
I have downloaded the contents and it looks just like my Windows installation USB-disk that Boot Camp generates.
My problem is that when I am in the process of installing Windows, the installer stops because it does not find a driver for the CD/DVD-drive. I have chosen Language, and the next thing that happens is an error message. I can not complete the installation.
The error-message is something like this:
"Missing driver for CD/DVD station. ...
If the Windows installation medium is in the CD/DVD-station you may safely remove it before this step."
I have used the same iso-image to install a virtual machine using Virtual Box, so I think the image is OK. I need a dual-boot to avoid timing loss.

    Hi Zargar,
    >>Using server 2008 R2 and the clients are Windows 7 Professional; i am getting empty start menu.
This is normal, for we disabled the option
Move the contents of Start Menu to the new location. This option is enabled by default and it will automatically move the existing content to the new location.
At this moment, we can manually copy the files we want from the local locations.

    Hello,

If you are using Windows 7 as a separte Workstation and users have Access to Windows 7 than you do not eeed CALs*
*You may allow up to 20 other devices to access Windows 7 software installed on the licensed computer to use only File Services, Print Services, Internet Information Services and Internet Connection Sharing and Telephony Services.
If you mean to install Windows 7 on Windows Server 2008 and users have Access to both than you Need CALs for Windows Server + VDA license for each device accessing to Windows 7 as a virtual machine on the Server.

    Hi
As mentioned above you will not find Toshiba drivers designed especially for the Windows 2003 R2 Server.
But dont worry and dont give up.
The simply Windows XP drivers should be compatible and you should be able to install the Xp drivers on the Win2003 Server OS.
