There are two big differences for the $249 difference in price:
You have to factor in the cost of a display to go with the Mac Mini. Maybe you already have a display, if not it will cost more than $249 to get a display that even approaches the quality of the iMac display. Screen size & quality are significant factors for video editing. Even a Dell U2410 is going for about $425 these days.
You will have a better experience with the 21.5" iMac's discrete GPU (the GT640M w/512MB VRAM) than you will ever get with the embedded Intel GPU in the Mini, considering that FCPX takes advantage of the discrete GPU for RT effects, rendering and exporting
Other things that may be of intertest:
There is little difference in CPU performance between these two Macs, i5 vs i7 or 2.6GHz vs 2.7 GHz
The amount of RAM will noticeably affect performance - put in 16GB if you can afford it
Check the ports you think you will need - for example, the iMac no longer has an audio-in port (you will need to purchase an external USB or FW audio device if you need audio-in capability); the Mac mini still has an audio-in port

I'm not sure if you've returned the monitor but I had the same problem with my new Mac Pro.
Basically the Dell monitor doesn't identify itself properly via Mini Display Port/Thunderbolt and newer Macs think it's a TV so the wrong kind of signal is sent to the monitor.
It's easily fixed - don't be put off by the instructions below, I've just done it and it takes less than a minute.
Here's what you do:
Download the Ruby script (click 'patch-edid.rb' in yellow):

Move the downloaded 'patch-edid.rb' file to your desktop
Open the Terminal app from: /Applications/Utilities/Terminal
In Terminal, type the following and hitting enter (or copy and paste it into Terminal and hit enter):
ruby ~/Desktop/patch-edid.rb
Go to your desktop
Check that a new folder was created - something like: "DisplayVendorID-10ac"
Open the Display Overrides folder at:
/Macintosh HD/System/Library/Displays/Overrides/
Copy the new folder into the /Overrides directory
Authenticate with your user password (if asked)
Restart your mac
For the first few seconds after restart it might look like nothing has changed but by the time you see the login screen (or your Desktop) everything will look as it should.
That's it - you won't have to do this again unless you erase and reinstall your mac.

New mac mini and imac vs powermac G5 running FCP studio

I want to compare running the FCP suite on the new max minis and imacs that came out today vs what I am currently using:
Currently I am running FCP Studio on a Powermac G5 dual 2GHz with one gig of ram. I believe the frontside bus is 1GHz. I believe the stock video card isan ATI Radeon 9600 Pro (AGP 8X Pro) video card with 64 MB of DDR SDRAM.
With this being said, is it safe to assume that the new entry level mac mini would surpass my G5 in terms of performnce in both video (NVIDIA GeForce 9400M with128MB or 256MB of shared DDR3) memory processing (intel core2 duo 2GHz)?
If not would the two low end Imacs (using NVIDIA GeForce 9400M with 256MB of shared DDR3 memory) and processing power handle FCP studio better than my current powermac G5 setup listed above?
I am wondering because I spoke to a apple sales person who transfered me to a system engineer that said I'd have a slow time rendering video on FCP with the mac minis as well as the 2 low end imacs. This may be but Im wondering if it is still better than what I am using

For FCP/FCS I would not save on anything but will get the max what my budget allow. You will be always doing more and the workflow in FCS will entice you to open almost all apps in FCS concurrently to make use of the advanced features. I think that the new iMac are powerful enough to handle FCS, but once again, the extra dollars will save you alot of pain. FCS is a pro app and is not to be underestimated. Good luck.

Can't run FCP v.3 on my ibook

Does anyone know why I can't run my FCP version 3 software on my computer. I get an error message asking me to re-install the programme as it can't find a file. I re-install and get the same message. I was previously running this version on my old titanium 667GHz laptop with great sucesss.

Could be that Tiger and FCP 3 don't get along (never tried it actually), but make sure the install is done right before you change the OS or create a new startup disk for FCP 3. Uninstall FCP 3 first: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93742
If the reinstall after uninstalling fails... I'll bet you need to setup a startup disk running OS 9.2.2 or Jaguar 10.2.8... to run FCP 3 on your iBook. MBP 15": Good enough to run FCP?

I am running FCP 5.1 on an old PowerMac Dual G4 and need to upgrade.
I'd like the portability of a MBP but was told that for almost the same amount of money I should go for an older PowerBook and Dual Quad.
My questions are:
Does the suggestion makes sense?
Any one of you wishes he would NOT have bought a MBP 15" to use FCP?
Of course budget IS a concern. (I am eligible for the student discount)
I have 2 external monitors, keyboard and mouse, an external HD

I had a Dual G4 and the motherboard went glitchy. I wasn't able to get much money for it. Quite a loss of investment.
Going for older, used computers may lead to distasters. When I buy any electronics, I'd like to sell it within 2 years to upgrade. It will soon become defective.... "Get your money and run" Older computers get outdated quicker not able to handle newer apps.
There's always a cheaper route but you'll be paying for a heartache.
The MBP sounds better to me. May not do to work as fast as the Dual Quad, but will it last?
You need to find out what you really want out of the computer. Will the MBP do it all?

Hi, I am planning to purchase a MBP soon. The decision I have to take is to whether get 15.4" 2.16 Ghz upgraded to 2 GB Ram or get the 15.4" 2.33 Ghz with 2GB RAM. Cost is a major factor! I will be running FCP along with Aftereffects and other Adobe Packages on it.Some of the questions I have are :

Yes, the 256 MB ATI is the main advantage here. It gives you more real-time performance and when it comes to Motion, it becomes crucial since Motion relies mainly on the graphic card to perform it's magic.

Yes, the more Ram you got into your system the better, but the 2GB chip is still too expensive. 2 GB Ram are enough if combined with the ATI 256 MB card. remember, more RAM means you can have more programs opened at the same time without affecting the performance of your machine. it won't affect the rendering speed at all, The CPU is responsible for that.
Résumé: CPU = speed / Graphic Card = real-time performance / RAM = more applications can be opened at the same time.

Impossible to run FCP on iMac?

I just bought an Aluminium dual core Intel iMac. I was just about to buy a copy of FCP but the spec says that I need an AGP or PCI Quartz Extreme graphics card. But my iMac won't let me upgrade the graphics card!
Is the inbuilt graphics card insufficient to run FCP? There is no work-around?

I have a 24" Aluminum at home that I use. I run Studio 2. The only thing I did not install was Color because of system requirements and recommendations from the boards here.
I maxed out the ram to 4gb before I even fired the thing up. My aluminum is running Tiger 10.4.11. My Final Cut is currently at version 6.0.2. I have had no problems running Final Cut. Motion was a little iffy but that was because of a bug which I think I cleared up with an update.
Don't plan on running multiple streams of uncompressed HD footage, but it will work very well for you. I would suggest though that you get a decent external firewire 800 drive. I purchased one of the CalDigit ones. It runs great.

Best minimum iMac for running FCP Studio

A client of mine has hundreds of hours of tapes\film she wants to turn into a film. I want to set her up with an 'inexpensive' iMac powerful enough to run FCP Studio ...
I want to transfer (up-rez) all her footage to an HD ProRes format (not sure which yet), so she will be working in HD.
She needs to be able to view her footage and rough cut it into manageable chunks. Then I'll help her with the editing ... right up to final post-production, at which point we will move it into my studio which has all the bells and whistles.
So I'm looking for just enough power to capture all the footage, to work in HD, but not so much that she goes broke setting up an edit suite she may only use for this one film.

Check the minimum system requirements for FCP Studio. That will tell you what minimum hardware is required to use it. According to the Apple site:

For battery life is it better to run my newly acquired 2010 Macbook Pro on battery most of the time down fully then charge or plug it in most of the time?

Hi C,
Run it about 30 minutes a day on batt, the rest on the power adapter. Every month or two, run the batt all the way down until it goes into forced sleep, wait five hours, then charge it all the way up.

How to run FCP on an iBook without Quartz Extreme?

Hi, I would like to be able to run FCP 5 on my existing iBook G4 (1.2GHz with 512MB RAM). Soundtrack Pro and DVD Studio should run fine but I believe FCP will not launch without a Quartz Extreme graphics adapter (and I don't have the cash to upgrade to a MacBook Pro!) I have heard there is a hack available to allow FCP 5 to run on lower-spec graphics chips... anyone know where I could find this hack? Are there any associated issues?

Of the two, target mode would be far more efficient (and less risky -- in terms of software data corruption). I have in the past installed OS X on a machine with a poor DVD drive, so iLife should be no problem.

Running FCP 5.0.4 on Intel MacBook Pro??

I'm working with a partner across the continent on an HDV project. He is working on a G5 with FCP 5.0.4. I'm on Intel machines here.
We are working with identical (media) drives. He sends me his work project. When I run it on my Intel system it looks like the image is step-framming ... it is not giving me a smooth playback.
Is this a function of running FCP 5.0.4 on an Intel system?
Or could it possibly be something else I am missing?

Probably. FCP 5.0.4 isn't Intel native, so you're running it under Rosetta, which slows it down considerably.
You needed the crossgrade to 5.1 to get an Intel native version. However, the crossgrade isn't available anymore, so you'll have to upgrade to FCP 6 to run properly on Intel.
However, if you're running version 6 and your partner is on version 5.x.x, you will be able to read his projects, but he won't be able to read yours. XML 2 can be used to transfer the projects between the different versions of the program.

PROS and CONS of running FCP on NEW iMACS?

It's a sad day -- I've been running fcp 5.1.4 using Tiger on my PowerMac G5 (dual core 2.3GHz, 2.5GB of memory) for years now -- few real problems besides operator error.
All has been good.
Along comes a client shooting XDCAM footage and suddenly I'm feeling VERY behind the times. I'm unable to edit with this codec since it's not compatible with fcp 5.0. And since my G5 is pre-Intel processor, I'm unable to upgrade to fcp 6 or higher (is this accurate?)
So what are the pros and cons of purchasing one of the new iMacs to run fcp 7? Although my G5 was installed with a DeckLink card, I never did any external monitoring using an NTSC monitor. Most of the stuff I'm doing is long form programming, straight cuts/dissolves, minimal graphics. I'm creating alot of content for the web, delivering some (non-broadcast) masters on dvd.
Do the iMacs have external monitoring capabilities? (I'm under the impression they don't)
Am I really at the point where I need to purchase new hardware? (I've been so happy with my G5.)
What will be my minimum investment, and is the Macmini ($599) a viable option?

FCS3 (FCP7) is only supported on intel processors. FCS2 (FCP6) runs fine on G5s.
iMacs do not have external monitoring capabilities beyond using firewire out for DV. I don't know how the mini-dvi port works with something like the original Matrox MXO. It may work fine.
Still, there is no way to hook up esata drives, replace the video card with something that supports Motion or Color or add any one of dozens of nifty bells and whistles.
The mac mini is a poor choice. Lousy graphics support and NO expansion capabilities.
Get a MacPro.

Running FCP 5.04 on Xserve G5

Has anyone been successful at running FCP on an xserve G5? And if so what graphics card did you use since FCP requires Quartz Extreme and an AGP card. Thank you.

Are you trashing all the prefs?
In the User Library you have a preferences folder. In that is a file called com.apple.FinalCutPro.plist
Then towards the bottom is a folder called Final Cut Pro User Data.
In there are three files:
Final Cut Pro 5.0 Prefs
Final Cut Pro Obj Cache
Final Cut Pro Prof Cache
Trash these as well and see what happens.
Don't delete the other folders in this folder though. (Custom Settings, Plugins, and Window Layouts)

It's because the PowerMac G5 had HUGE bandwidth with a fat BUS on each processsor so they could run hard, hot and heavy.
It's not so with the Intel processors which are multi-core and share a common bus thus bottleneck.
The newer Intel processors can do more work on the CPU, but when it comes to in/out they are s-l-o-w.
I've had a wickedly fast dual processor (not dual core) G5, RAID 0 pair of 10,000 RPM drives as boot and a fast video card, I could do a lot very very fast.
You'll likely have to upgrade to Final Cut X to get more cores utilized, prepare to cry a little bit, Apple is working on the features they stripped out of it to make amends to pro users who complained loudly. (all over TV too)
