Wich Sun machines can boot from SATA disk?

Hi,
I would like to know which (newer and older) Sun machines can boot from SATA disks.
I think this is a feature of the OBP - so the question is:
Are there any updated OBPs for older Sun machines to boot from SATA disks?
TIA
Bernd

Hi,
I am aware the limit with earlier openboot revisions that limit ATA drive size to +130GB>>( search the forum for previous threads on this topic ), I recommend using only
supported drives in Sun SPARC systems. What kind of project are you working on? That's my private test environment. Due to my limited budget I use only older machines there (for example, U10, U30, etc). I was thinking about buying a used V120 or something like that to replace my existing fileserver.
A V120 with two internal 500 GB harddisks would be perfect for that .
Looks like I've to wait until used T1000 are available to a reasonable price.
regards
Bernd

I replaced my hard drive on macbook pro and used time machine to boot from but it also installed the unrepaired disk permmissions of the other drive, would this cause problems to my new drive?

Can you remember what the permissions problem was that you had before? You may need to reinstall OS X from scratch and not reinstall anything from your Time Machine backups. To be on the safe side you should reinstall all third-party applications from scratch, as well. Then only restore from your backup your document/data files.

  • Can't boot from hard disk or from windows 7 recovery dvd

    I have a 970A-G46 motherboard.
I can't boot from hard disk or from a windows 7 recovery dvd.
If I move the hard drive to another PC, it boots fine.
If I put the DVD in another PC's dvd drive, it can be accessed.
This machine will boot from an Ubuntu dvd and I can then access the HD directories and the recovery dvd.
What do I need to do?
    Help and thanks

"I can't boot from hard disk or from a windows 7 recovery dvd."
What is that DVD from? Is it from a previous computer of some kind? Same question for HDD and the OS on it.

  • Godane's Archlinux boot from hard disk but it can't login in with slim

    I download Godane's archiso-live-2009-09-24.iso , i havent cdrom , so i boot it from hard disk .
I extract iso to drive C: (fat32) ,two folder is "boot" "archiso-live"
    my menu.lst  is :
    title Boot archiso-live Desktop
    root (hd0,0)
    find --set-root /boot/initrd.img
    kernel /boot/vmlinuz  elevator=deadline ramdisk_size=60% aufs nonfree=no vga=791
    initrd /boot/initrd.img
    load=overlay.lzm
The iso can be boot from hd ,but there isnt slim . only is console...
what can i do with this problem??

I think your problem is that load=overlay.lzm is in the wrong place.
Here is what i should look like:
    title Boot archiso-live Desktop
    root (hd0,0)
    kernel /archiso-stable/boot/vmlinuz elevator=deadline lang=en_US keyb=us load=overlay,mesa usbdelay=5 nonfree=no xdisplay=old xdriver=no from=/dev/sda3/archiso-stable changes=/dev/sda3/changes session=xfce cdname=archiso-live
    initrd /archiso-stable/boot/initrd.img
I use 'from' boot option so i can boot from my hard drive more easier. The way its booted above is for 2009-12-08 version of my archiso-live. Just thought you should know.
I hope this helps. And sorry for it being so late.

  • Sun V100 should boot from disk

I read a lot of pages and manuel, but I do not find the right comand sequence in lom to set the boot mode from "net" to "disk".
My system always does a "boot net".
    regards/TX
    TAB

It isn't a LOM setting you need to review, but your settings in OBP.
If you do not already have them, get the V100 documentation from Docs.Sun.Com
    [http://docs.sun.com/app/docs/prod/v100.srvr?l=en&a=view]
Connect to your system and get to its OK prompt. Review its current setting for boot-device (it should be at the default of `+disk net+` which means it will try to boot from the drive but when that fails it will boot from the network -- standard behaviour).
If your system is failing to boot from the disk drive, you either have a missing or failed disk or you have a corrupt bootblock on that drive, or you have simply not installed a bootable OS to that disk.
The documentation has everything you need for that V100.

  • Intel Xserve will NOT boot from hard disk drive

I have two Intel Xserves 2.0 QC machines
I have tried to re-install version 10.4.11 OS (don't ask) onto a Hard disk drive that is in a Disk drive caddy and inserted in the machine.
When booting from The installation DVD media
The disk is seen by the "Disk Utility" (the disk is partitioned as GUID boot) and the installation proceeds to the disk.
Once the first pass of the installation is complete and the system reboots, the system shows the folder and ? mark.
If I boot and hold "ALT" key to view all avaialble boot options the Hard Disk Drive does NOT appear as valid boot disk.
It does show, the still inserted Installation DVD.
I CAN boot from an external firewire drive and the Hard disk drive is visible to the OS once logged in.
I have tried different caddy postions (left, middle and right)
I have tried bona fide Apple supplied Disk drives
I have tried various different caddies
I have tried installing Operating System 10.5.*  and  10.6.8 server
I have run SMC reset and system reset
But still I cannot boot off from any Hard Disk Drive inserted in a caddy at the front of the system.
    Has anyone seen this behaviour?
    Is it fixable?
Do I have replace something like the Hard Disk Drive back plane circuit board? Or even the main logic board?
I have now run out of ideas and cannot find any help in discussions or just googling.
ANY help would be very appreciated
    Regards
    Tony

    Antonio Hi !
QC = Quad core  or  QX as it is written on the "pull out" serial number tab at rear of system
    I have 3 late 2006 Intel xserves
On my intial posting I declared 2 were 2.0 machines - when I was trying to be concise
2 of the macines are 2.66 systems and 1 is 2.0 system - all are QX machines
the 2.0 and 1 of the 2.66 will NOT boot from the ADM and disk inside the system - whereas the other 2.66 system will.
I have many different Caddies and these have different product/model number labels
    603-9965
    603-9545
    603-9796
    these are marked "intel SATA"
The 80Gb was only one of the drives tested - I have used Seagate 400Gb 750Gb and 1Tb  -  all of which have been used in systems at one time or another
and as I said the drives ARE visible once the operating system (either installation DVD or external firewire are booted from) - they are just NOT visible when the system is searching for boot media.
Thanks for the guide - I will look through that and continue to try and find an answer

  • Boot from USB disk?

    Hello,
My iMac monitor crashed and burned but the computer has a new hard disk in it with a lot of iTunes TV shows and movies. Is it possible to put this disk in an external USB 2.0 enclosure and then boot from it with my MacBook. Would USB 2.0 be fast enough to play the media from the disk. Looking for a cheap fix to hold me over until I get a new iMac.
Sorry if this is a blatantly stupid question.
    Thanks,
    Eric

Well... you have two issues there.
    1) Can you boot from an external USB drive. The answer is yes. Just hold down the "Option" key on your MacBook and you will get little icons of the drives you can boot from. You would just click (using the trackpad button... tapping doesn't work here)on the drive you want to boot from and you're good to go.
    2) Can you use the drive from your iMac in an external enclosure to boot on your MacBook. That's probably a no. It "may" boot, but you may experience unexpected behavior... or it may just freeze during boot up. The OS on the drive is configured for the hardware on your iMac and it won't be happy with what it finds on your MacBook.
However, you don't need to boot using the drive in order to do what you want. You can just boot the MacBook normally and connect the external drive and access all the data on it just as if it were any other external drive. I dont' see any real benefit for you to be booting from the external drive for what you are trying to do. Also... as you sort of pointed out... USB is much slower than your internal SATA interface. Even with a properly configured external drive, the boot time is significantly slower when used over USB.

No will it boot from USB stick. Pulled hard disk tried elsewhere seems ok.
Bios looks ok and sees hard disk and dvd etc
Any ideas otherwise a pretty dear machine for two monthe use.
Was just out of guarantee before fault appeared
    Thanks chris

    Hi buddy,
    > But still think bios is corrupted
If you think so, then contact your authorized service provider. The technicians can check your notebook and try to reflash the BIOS. The technicians are really experts and so this shouldnt be a problem for them.
Here you can search for one:

  • Cannot boot from installed disk on Intel Xserve

    I have an Intel Xserve.
I have had it for some months,it has been working fine, it is a standby backup machine to others and is used as a testbed.
I have just installed from the supplied DVD 10.4.8.
The installation goes smoothly, however after the first reboot. The system is trying to install from dvd again.
I have tried installing a known working Intel boot disk, and this just gives a folder with the flashing question mark.
I have tried formatting the disk and partitioning making sure to use GUID partition and it doesn't boot.
I can however boot from a external FW drive with 10.4.10 installed.
I can then go into Startup disk and set the boot disk as on of the installed drives, but this has No effect.
I am currently trying to Clone from the FW drive to an installed drive.
    Has anyone seen this behaviour?
Can someone tell me what I can try to resolve this.
All I have read regarding Flashing Question Marks is to ensure disks are using GUID partion and when booting from another disk to set the boot disk in the System Prefences.

    Welcome to the forum!
You're missing the first disk which is "Rescue and Recovery", followed by CDs 1-7.
Make sure to re-align the partitions before or after OS installation in order to get the proper utilization of that SSD.
    Good luck.
    Cheers,
    George

  • Booting from Installer Disk

    I have an issue with a 12" 867Mhz Powerbook G4.
It was showing the file/question mark icon on boot. Booting from a 10.4 retail DVD and running disk utility confirmed that the hard drive had died. I replaced the hard drive with a new 80GB IDE drive.
Next step is to install 10.4, but it will no longer boot from the disk. I turn it on holding alt and get the option to boot from the disk - the machine recognises that it is a Tiger install disk. When I select it I'm taken to the grey screen with the Apple logo and then it seems to hang. The DVD spins for a while and seems to be in use but then it stops.
Does anyone have any ideas what could be causing this and what I can do to resolve it? I have checked the disk in another mac and it is working correctly.

Yes, it sounds like you didn't connect the new drive correctly, or tripped over the optical drive upon doing so. One thing you can try is the startup manager, instead of the 'C' key, as the 'C' key doesn't always work. The startup manager is used among other things to boot the Hardware test volume, but you can also use it to force boot up the installer:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TA27043?viewlocale=en_US
256 MB of RAM is hardly enough, even though it is the required minimum. And what can happen if you don't have enough RAM, some may be of sufficiently low quality, that it can't get everything it needs into memory. If after upgrading the RAM following specs*:
    http://www.macmaps.com/badram.html
you still can't boot the disc with the startup manager, have an authorized service technician determine how badly you might have munged the hard drive installation.

  • 13" late 2011 MacBook Pro has frozen after Yosemite installation. I can, however, boot from a clone of my MacBook Air that is on an external drive. Despite the fact that I can boot from the external, could it be the RAM that's the prob

My daughter's 13" late 2011 MacBook Pro has frozen (null sign displays) after Yosemite installation. I can, however, boot from a clone of my MacBook Air that is on an external drive. I reinstalled Yosemite on the MBP HD, but it still hangs in mid install. Despite the fact that I can boot from the external, could it be the RAM that's the problem? I'd happily put 8 GB in if it seems probable that would solve the problem. I've tried all the suggested procedures that I've seen posted here. Disk Utility, and my older version of DiskWarrior indicate the HD is OK. I have DiskWarrior 5 on order.

Boot the MBP with the OPTION key down.  If successful, you should see two HDD icons,  Select the recovery partition (on the right).
From the 4 option menu select Disk Utility.
Run Disk Utility>First Aid, Verify and Repair.
If the disk cannot be repaired, it will have to be replaced.
    Ciao.

I have installed Win 7 professional on hp touchsmart 320-1030 with an OEM DVD to overwrite Win 7 premium  preinstalled from factory.
I want to reboot the machine with the same DVD after completing the installation, to test for possibility of reimage in case of crash. Although in bios, I specify cd\dvd as firts boot media,  the machine cannot boot from installation DVD.  I have 20 machines that behave this way. Can anyone assist?
Note: I had to delete all partitions on the PC before doing a fresh installation of Win 7 pro as Premium can not joing domain.

    Hello,
So, you installed Window 7 Pro with a DVD, you boot with it to install the O.S, and now it does not work?
Have you tried to load the BIOS default values or even updating the BIOS?
If it had work before, cant understand why it does not work now...
    Let me know.
