Wide screen format on regular TV

Hi,
My current video was shot 16:9, and after editing in FCP I made a DVD for the client. The DVD looks great on a computer, but client reported that on a regular TV the sides were cut off. This is my first foray into widescreen editing. Please advise. Do I need to make two version of the video for the DVD?
thanks,
Eve

Hello Eve,
if you create your DVD in iDVD the disc will be set to "auto pan/scan & letterbox" meaning it will depend on the setting of the DVD player how the video is displayed.
In order to get it "right", you basically have 2 options:
• make the DVD in iDVD, then correct the settings with myDVDedit (http://www.mydvdedit.com/)
• create the DVD with DVDSP setting it to "auto letterbox"
... or you can tell the client to change his settings on the set-top player
On the other hand, you say that the sides of the video appear to be "cut off". How much is missing? Some is normal due to a phenomenon known as overscan. Does your client see black bars at all?
hope this helps

  • Can wide screen format be retained on iPhone?

I am wanting to use Keynote on my iPhone to display on a large monitor using AirPlay.  The process actually works ok except for one glitch:  when the keynote program is loaded on the iPhone, it changes the format of the slides "to fit the display."  The discription of the issues message is not accurate, as it transforms it to fit a VGA screen, which is not applicable to the iPhone nor the TV display.  Is there any way to retain the 720 display format using the iPhone?

Probably.  You can find a 3rd party repair center, or call Apple.
I believe that Apple will simply replace it for $199 in the U.S.

  • How to adjust wide screen format?

I just installed AppleTv connected to my A/V amp. the monitor out is to a projector and then a 110" screen. video from AppleTV are the correct width, but not the correct height. the vids don't fill the screen vertically. I see this happen with letter box DVD's, but the LB projection is not as large vertically as the appletv projection. "Full Screen" DVD's fill the screen propely in my system. how do I get the apptetv vids to fill the screen? to the best of my knowledge, I have not downloaded "widescreen" videos. lastly, this is not a zoom issue on the projector. thanks for the help

the appletv outputs the video content in the correct aspect ratio.
not all widescreen content is the same ratio, so some will have black bars top and bottom.
the appletv will simply output it "as is". it is your display device that would need to be able to stretch it to fit the screen (distorting the video in the process).

  • Poor Quality in Wide-Screen When Exporting HD to Quicktime

    Hello all...
I'm working on a fairly large project in iMovie HD with wide-screen footage from my Sony HDR-HC3 and have hit a wall.
I can't seem to get a good result when I export clips into Quicktime in a wide-screen format. They are a bit choppy & you can see bits of some horizontal lines. The same video exported in full-screen VGA looks great. Any tips...? I basically just want to make good quality QT movies watchable on my computer that maintain the original aspect ratio (and LOOK like they do in iMovie!)
The entire project is around 100GB and I currently have almost 40GB of free space. Any help appreciated!

  • Wide screen help?! im stuck

    Hi,
Can anyone offer some advice? I have been working on my
animation project in flash to the ratio of 550px over 400px and
have only just realized it has to be wide screen format of 1024 px
over 768 px and now i don't know what to do? will i have to start
all over again and stretch out every key? I have tried to see what
it looks like with one key and it looks stretched and wrong?! what
is the purpose of using wide screen and do you think it would be
better if i just kept it at 550px over 400px? its for a university
    presentation.
    Thankyou for your time,
    Lauren

I dunno, seems like you should be able to scale up the SWF to
about 190% and that would be very close to filling the screen. Use
the Publish settings to set the scale size, scale both aspects
    identically to retain your proportions.

  • Regular and wide screen output viewing

    Hi,
I was wondering if it is possible to create a project so that
it will be diplayed properly (page nicely filled and not having to
scroll) regardless if the audience is viewing the output on a
regular screen or on a wide screen.
I have a widescreen and at the moment I change the settings
of my computer to a lower resolution to record for 'regular'
screens. But is there a way to record so that I can cater to
widescreen and regular audiences at the same time?
    thanks!
    Jennifer

    Welcome to our community, Jennifer
You might try simply linking to the .SWF as the output as
opposed to the HTML file. This normally causes the file to scale to
fit the browser size. However, you still may not see it completely
fill the area. There may still be blank areas on the sides or the
    top and bottom.
Life is always a trade off, eh? Seems you fix one issue only
to see a different issue arise as a result.
    Cheers... Rick

  • Unable to get HD Wide Screen 16:9 to fill the screen on TV.

    12/20/08
Problem: I am not able to get HD Wide Screen 16:9 to fill the screen on TV. Leaves dark bands on the top and bottom of picture.
What I'm working with: Mac Pro Quad-Core Intel Xeon Processors with 2GB Memory soon to be 6GB & 30 inch screen. QuickTime Pro 7.5.5, Final Cut Express 4.0.1, and iDVD, 7.0.2.
New JVC, GZ-HD3U camcorder with QuickTime conversion software, recently updated, provided by JVC with the camera to change native TOD. files created in the camcorder to native MPEG2 files in Quicktime at a size of 1920 x 1080.
Two TV's, one Wide Screen HD and the other standard screen. I have changed the TV aspect rations back and forth from 4:3 to 16:9 and the only thing that changes is the size of the black bands on the top and bottom of the screen. The black spaces are larger in 16:9, making the picture appear squeezed.
I am using RW DVD discs so I can continue to try different setups without wasting discs and so far I have tried about 12 different arrangements. Two methods work but they are export conversions to a 4:3 aspect ratio and 720X480DV/DVCPRO-NTSC. Certainly this is a work around, but doing this looses the Wide Screen HD effects provided by the original JVC movies.
When I import the clips, and I've tried a number of different imports from QuickTime to Final Cut Express, I make sure that the Sequence set up matches or comes as close as possible to the imported clips. I've tried exporting them from FCE without changes and I have exported them using QuickTime to change them to different formats using nearly everything available trying to get the clips or sequences ready to import to iDVD.
In iDVD I have set up using both aspect ratios and it appears as thought setting up in 16:9 makes the spaces above and below even larger on TV. In fact it creates these spaces above and below even on the 720X480DV/DVCPRO-NTSC clips that work just fine on the 4:3 aspect ratio settings on the same TV.
If anyone has overcome this problem, I would greatly appreciate your guidance. So far, I've spent over a 100 hours on it to no avail.
    Larry

Tom, I don't know where to go in FCE to create a AVCHD AIC Sequence. I can find the
1920X1080i60 in the Sequence format without any problem. And in QT don't know where to select AIC but I select Apple Intermediate Codec, and under compressor I select HDV 1080i interlaced frame rate 29.97. Under Export Size Settings I don't know rather to select 1920 x 1080 HD or HD 1920 x 1080 16:9 and what about preserve aspect ratio using and Deinterlace Source Video?
Part two: When I create a Sequence in FCE with the 1920X1080i60 designation, and then import a QT HD 1920X1080 16:9 Intermediate Codec clip into a bin and then open the clip in that sequence I'm asked if I want to match the clip to the sequence and if I don't I have rendering. If I match them the rendering, as you said, goes away. However, I notice that when I check out the Item Properties on them after the above process, the Aspect ratio in the clip and Sequence, suddenly becomes HD 1440x1080. Is this normal?

  • Change  of ratio from 4 x 3  to 16 x 9  wide screen..

Change  of ratio from 4 x 3  to 16 x 9  wide screen.. in FCX pro
Can anybody please help me, who has prior knowledge of changing the ratio from 4 x 3 to 16.9 widescreen that I have already imported.. I have tried everything in the preferences.. Before I imported it, and after, however it is not working. It’s been imported from a FlashCARD… Thank you in anticipation

Hello once again Tom, sorry for the inconvenience, I'm quite new to this Final Cut Pro as you can tell. However here is information you requested I hope I got it right for you.
I will do my best to explain as I go on. I'm using a Canon XL2 broadcast camera which is capable of shooting in 9 x 6 and 4 x 3. It is a DV tape camera and additional to that I have on the back a datavideo (DN 60) flash card recorder. I do believe that the flash card recorder records in 16 x 9, so I am told by the distributors. I'm also told by the same distributors that for some reason Final Cut Pro X does not recognise the 16 x 9 flag, however Adobe, Sony Vegas etc they do recognise it and allow you to change the ratio size in their software. When I use the tape from the camera it exports into Final Cut Pro X as 16 x 9, so I will thought that the flash card recorder would record in the same format.
I can tell by the size of the clip in the viewfinder that it is not 16 x 9 when I import it in, I also make a quick 10 second movie and set that as my master file, no matter what I use to import it in the preferences it still won't stretch to widescreen, or in fact anything else I do as I send it to a master file, anything else than this I am at a loss, not sure what to do. I hope the picture of the move inspector is what you require also including the picture to let you see the size in reference.

  • Why can't I get wide screen when burning a dvd?

My sequence is all 1920x 1080 HD footage in mpeg2. My photos are all 1920 x1080 px. In encore if I want to burn a standard DVD it automatically goes to 720x480 if I choose " mpeg2dvd" format. Why isn't there a wide screen mpeg2 dvd format?

Colin, what you show is the  dialog box when I do file> export media, right? Except mine is different (Pr 5.5 iss different?) and has a check box for "match source attributes" and when that is checked the format box is grayed out.  And I don't see where you can customize anything.
What's the purpose of File>export media if it doesn't create a dvd?
If i do File> dyn link> send to encore there is no dialog box like you showed. it doesn't give any choices except dvd or blu ray and no "wide screen".
Are you all saying that 720x480 is all you get on a dvd and if your source is 16x9 it will squish it to fit? aren't hollywood dvd's in 16x9?

  • High Quality Wide Screen for YouTube - PLEASE HELP!

I am using a Panasonic PV-GS400 camera in wide-screen mode (this is another topic, but the camera still outputs 720 x 480 video, my understanding is that it is called "anamorphic wide screen"). I had figured out some settings to get my videos to appear in "High Quality" mode, wide screen (16:9) in YouTube, but the last couple of times I have tried these settings, they didn't work. Here's what I used:
    - Windows Media 856 x 480 frame size
    - Frame rate 29.97kbps
    - Pixel aspect ratio - square (1.0)
    - 2 encoding passes
I got the 856 x 480 ratio from another website. I don't really understand why the pixel aspect ratio needs to be square, but when I tried 16:9 aspect ratio, the video is letterboxed. I also don't understand the two different project modes for PE7 (when creating a new project you can choose the format 4:3 or 16:9). Maybe someone can explain how the widescreen project setting works. Perhaps it is something similar to how my camera does widescreen but the videos are still 720 x 480.
At any rate, if someone has settings that will reliably produce wide screen videos that appear in YouTube's "high quality" mode, I'd appreciate it! Thanks.

As we often say on this forum, the biggest challenge with working with YouTube is that, as soon as someone figures it out, YouTube changes the rules again.

  • How do I create a wide screen movie in Premiere Elements 7 and burn to DVD or Blue Ray?

I have created a movie using project settings of 16:9 and also filmed in this format.  The movie I burned to DVD is not in wide screen. I have requested assistance and given instructions to go through share and select Sony PSP.  However this creates a file which is saved to my computer in mpeg-4 format which will not burn to my DVD.  I am using a Blue Ray burner which looks as if it will only take MP3.  Any suggestions?

I haven't actually done a BluRay yet - waiting to get everything right and,
hopefully, will be able to put more than 1 movie when all is finished!
That's my next challenge. I initially used Share/Disc to burn the DVD with,
I thought, all the settings for widescreen.  It has always worked OK in
Pinnacle.  When I lodged the problem with tech support they sent me
instructions using the Sony PSP.  Interestingly I use a Sony camera, have a
Sony disc burner plus Sony TV and Playstation so you'd think they'd all talk
    to each other!!!

Are your creating and burning your DVD (or is it a BluRay disc?) from
    Premiere Elements by choosing Share/Disc?
If so, it should produce a widescreen disc.
Sometimes DVD players don't automatically read home-burned DVDs as
widescreen and you have to manually switch it. But at the very least the
video should be either letterboxed or stretched.

  • Action Safe on Wide Screen TVs

I'm editing a commercial for broadcast (shot in 4:3), and am concerned about some elements on the far right side of the screen (specifically, I don't want them to be seen). They fall safely outside the action safe window, so I'm not too concerned about someone watching on a regular television. But will someone watching on a wide screen TV see material on the right and left side outside of the action safe window for a 4:3 shot?
    Thanks.

Wow, I discover something new everyday. In the broadcast biz, I thought 'Action Safe' meant meeting someone other than your significant other in a hotel more than 200 miles from your house.
