Widescreen 16:9 mystery

Hi,
I shot a show in 16:9 format. Now Im trying to burn a DVD but I am running into some strange things.
I exported the show using Compressor 2, with the 16:9 option.
When I import it into DVDSP and burn out a copy (not swicthing the display mode to 16:9) it looks great on a 4:3 TV.
However, if I run out a copy by switching the Display Mode to 16:9 and watch it on a 4:3 TV it looks squashed even more and unnatural.
What am i doing wrong?
Most of the audience will be watching this show on a 4:3 TV.
Is it ok if I leave the Display mode in 4:3 or does it have to be 16:9?
Thanks,
Mike A.

Yes, an Easy Setup does, well, setup everything correctly but existing sequences - sequences created at any time before you toggled the Easy Setup - do not get 'updated.' If you had to do it all over, you could have simply checked the box for Anamorphic 16:9 and went along editing.
That said, the 'fix' for this issue might not be so bad:
Check the box for Anamorphic 16:9 in your current sequence's settings. Your clips will now look distorted. But not to worry...
Make sure your autoselect buttons are on for all tracks, then select all your clips in the Timeline (Command-A)
Press Option-Command-V to bring up the Remove Attributes dialog and select Distort from the Video options, then click OK.
That should correct your issue for the bulk of your clips.
However, if you've got any other types of files - full-frame 4:3 clips, for instance - they'll need to have their Distort settings corrected. That usually means setting Aspect Ratio (in the Motion tab, under Distort) to 33.33 (or -33.33, working from memory here)
In addition, lower thirds/plates created in LiveType or Motion will probably need to be recomposed for the anamorphic 16:9 frame. And, finally, any freeze frames made from the Timeline will need to be recreated (since they're of a 4:3 frame and will not become anamorphic).
Let us know how it goes...

  • "Widescreen Preview" Mysteriously Appeared On 2 Of The 9 Videos.

I have just made 9 short slideshow videos in Final Cut Express, exported them to QuickTime Movie (NOT self-contained) and dragged them into a 4:3 PAL iDVD project.
When burned to DVD and played on my 16:9 HDTV, 2 of the videos were stretched even though the TV was set to 4:3.
On playing the project in iDVD, both the dodgy videos are stretched and have the statement "Widescreen Preview" in green.
All the videos were dealt with identically.
Can anyone suggest how this has happened?
Normally I preview in iDVD before burning but the process is so routine that I didn't on this occasion!

I too have just begun having this prob but from Final Cut Pro. Had 9 4:3 clips dragged to iDVD...1st 8 played well in testing but 9th showed "widescreen preview". All 9 were produced in the same doc with 9 diff 4:3 sequences. I had to go back and rebuild the entire sequence a clip at a time until i found if a clip was corrupt. It ended up the music track (wedding video) was the last element i added and that made it "widescreen preview". To bring the audio into FCP originally, I dragged from the CD to copy it to the hard drive...then imported into music folder in FCP. So, I dumped that music file and imported the file from the CD into iTunes. I duplicated that mp3 file and then imported it into the FCP music folder and it worked!
Thought I had solved the prob only to find in checking an older iDVD project another "widescreen preview"!!!
I went ahead and burnt the DVD when it showed "widescreen" and sure enough, it cropped the edges of the video on a 4:3 screen. Even when I played it on a 16:9 screen it spread out to conform to screen but still had edges cropped.
    ANYONE HELP!!

  • IDVD is mysteriously converting my movie to widescreen

    Hi,
I'm using Final Cut Express 3.5.1 and I have created multiple sequences, each of which is exported to QuickTime Movie (not the conversion option) and it is not self-contained. Out of all the 8 exports I have created, one is being shown in iDVD as widescreen - when I choose the preview option.
All video came from the same video camera and from the same reel of tape (DV). I was wondering if anyone has run into this problem before and how did you fix it? I've tried creating a new sequence and creating a new export but the same problem occurs. Initially I was assuming that the problem is with FCE and not with iDVD but the good folks on the FCE forum suggested it may be an iDVD issue and I should also post here?
    Thanks,
    Walter ...

    Ok, back from my experiments.
The DVD burned fine last night and I checked everything out on my Xbox 360 DVD player, attached to my widescreen tv. The movie actually looked ok, and I was pretty excited. I had two clips on the DVD, the first that displayed the "widescreen preview" mode in iDVD, and a second clip that previewed in 4:3 in iDVD. However, both of these looked basically the same on my tv. Then, I realized that my tv is widescreen, and was converting the movies to all look that same...stretched out wide.
So, I loaded the DVD on my MacBook to see what would happen. This is where I saw the difference. Since my MacBook is widescreen, the first video clip filled the entire screen, and everyone was stretched out wide. But, when I played the second video clip, my MacBook actually placed black bars on the side, playing the movie in its true 4:3 format. I then exited the fullscreen playback mode and started the DVD in the windowed mode. I watched the DVD player adjust the window width from 4:3 for the DVD menu screen to 16:9 (incorrectly) to play the first movie clip again.
To me, this all proves that what you see on iDVD (widescreen preview) is what you get on the DVD.
Now, regarding the chapter page videos showing in widescreen, this looks to be inherent on many the new iDVD themes that default to 16:9 mode. For some reason, when you tell iDVD to use 4:3 mode, it doesn't adjust the small chapter video clips accordingly, but leaves them in widescreen. But, this could be just the design of some of the themes, regarding the way they look.
To me, I've concluded that the iDVD preview is accurate to show how the DVD will actually look when played...widescreen vs. standard. But, I'm still not 100% sure why iDVD is stretching my 4:3 movies to 16:9. The extra audio jingles may be a clue. So, my next step is to convert the .aiff jingle files to .mp3 files, and then replace those in my movie. I'll do this sequence by sequence...maybe I can determine the cause here.
Oh, and if you haven't seen Iron Man, I recommend it.

  • Elements 8 ALWAYS reduces widescreen 16:9 to 4:3 - Please help!

I've got a new Panasonic camcorder and have recently taken some film of the Festival of Speed.
I've tried to edit it and save it to the PC but in the viewing pane during editing it was clearly 4:3. There seemed no way of correcting this so I plugged on, hoping it could be saved as Widescreen 16:9. It couldn't, and the resulting video looked terrible.
I even tried uploading it to Youtube, where there was a "widescreen" option. All this did was shrink the video in the viewing pane on youtube, still distorted.
I started again, this time paying careful attention to the opening choices. Seems there are various formats I can choose from, the ones relevant to me being:
    PAL DV standard 48hz
    PAL DV widescreen 48hz
I've tried both, but it's still 4:3 either way.
I've also tried watching "raw" copy from the memory card, that's correct 16:9, and I've tried loading a clip into Windows Movie Maker and that displays in the viewing pane as 16:9 and saves perfectly happily as 16:9. So I don't believe that the camera is at fault.
I've spent so far five hours on this, including a tortuous 30 minutes to Adobe support who basically said I need to pay them money for them to get it to work properly, which seems a little unfair if it's a glitch in their program.
I'd really appreciate help with this one, it is causing me a massive headache!
    Many thanks in anticipation.

I'm really amazed and disappointed that Adobe can bring a product to market that doesn't simply have a 16:9 video size preset button, it's the normal standard video format these days.
Well, PrE does have the Video-standard for both NTSC and PAL DV-Widescreen, but that is for the Video-standard of 720 x 480 (NTSC), or 720 x 576 (PAL), with the appropriate PAR (Pixel Aspect Ratio) to produce those, 1.212 for NTSC and 1.422 for PAL. Your camera shoots neither. That is the problem. Why Panasonic, and a few others, have decided to deviate from the Video-standards, is a mystery to me.
The workaround to that non-standard footage is to choose either the NTSC, or PAL Widescreen, depending on where you live, and then Import your footage into that. Run Interpret footage on your Clips, and set Scale to Frame Size, to get the footage up to the Video-standard Frame Size w/ the proper PAR (Pixel Aspect Ratio) to accomplish that.
I'm going to have to consider the £50 this program cost a waste of money and try and find a program that does create movies in 16:9.
Adobe offers a 30-day, money-back guarantee. If you have not owned it for over 30 days, you can return it for a full refund.
It is not the 16:9 that is the problem, but the Frame Size that Panasonic chose, that is the issue. A lot of smart phones, that shoot video are also going with the smaller Frame Size, and those users are in the same boat, as you are.
Because Adobe has partnered with Nokia (I do not now what Frame Size the Nokias produce) on some recent projects, I would anticipate that PrE might soon get that different Frame Size. Whether it will be in PrE 10, I cannot say.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • Video Output - Widescreen Options Missing

We use Macs to present at church every Sunday in widescreen. On all three of the Macs that we have updated to Mavericks, the widescreen options are no longer available to project in. We used 1920 by 1080. Now, there are only three options for output and they are all 4:3 ratio.
    Any suggestions?

open the external monitor display, then hold the  option key as you click "scaled" to cycle between 4:3 only (default)  and another set combined with 16:9 paramaters, if the monitor supports  it. you can also hold the option key to click the "detect displays"  button that seemed to mysteriously dissapear (cycles from the "gather  windows" button). just remember than when u need more options, click with  option.

  • Games In Widescreen

Hi Everyone, I am in need of some advise please. I am trying to play a couple of games on my mac mini 2010 and when they play full screen I only get 4:3 display and I cant get it to stretch to widescreen. I have tried all resolutions but the game still goes to 4:3 when I select fullscreen.
I have my Mini connected to a 40" tv via HDMI.
Any help would really be appreciated
    John

    Hi Stefan,
Thanks for your reply, the games I am playing are jewel quest mysteries and mystery case files, I have seen them both running widescreen on the same TV on the windows platform but the mac just wont do it. I have tried setting the mac res to a different one and it makes the desktop bigger like you would expect it to, however when you select the game the resolution just reverts to the original one that the game is set at. I have been looking for options to stretch the image in the graphics setting on the mac but they dont seem to exist.
    Thanks
    John

  • Mini-DVI to Video adapter + Widescreen CRT Television problem...

The problem is that in the resolution list in Display-tab for the second display, which is PAL TV, have no resolutions for WIDESCREEN TV. Only resolutions are 640x480, 720x480, 720x576, 800x600 and 1024x768.
Is this a OS related or is there different adapters to iMac 24 and iMac 20? The adapter which I now have is lent from my friend and he have iMac 20.
How this even can be an issue to MAC, because this could be done easily on PC. I just got my first Mac and I love it but this kind of problems I even couldn't imagine.

My 27" flat screen TV added some 1220x720 selections to choose from. Go to the "NTSC/PAL" display perference panel and click the "Detect Displays."
From experence I have never been able to really use the TV as a true second display. Although it really does work quite well for showing DVD movie's, Home movie's, iPhoto slideshows, MS Word PowerPoint or anything FrontRow.
For quicker access to the Display Preferences check the "Show displays in menu bar" This places a display icon on the menu bar for one click access to resolution list and preferences for both displays.

  • Why do I have mysterious cellular data usage (Verizon) every 6 hours on all 3 of my iphone 5's?

I have recently uncovered mysterious cellular usage on three different iPhones. I am a Verizon customer and discovered this by examining the cellular data use logs. What I found are a long series of mysterious data usage logs. I have visited the Genius Bar at my local Apple Store 3 times now to log notes and discuss the issue. It is being escalated.
    The characterstics are as follows:
All my family phones have the appropriate IOS and hardware updates (verified by the GeniusBar at my local Apple Store).
This is occuring across three phones, which happen to all be iphone 5. Two are 5 and the other a new 5s. We do have one iphone 4 in the family but the issue (so far as I can tell), is not happening on it.
One iphone 5 has IOS 7, the other IOS 6. The new 5s has of course IOS 7.
Mysterious data use happens even while connected to wifi.
Each mysterious data use log entry is exactly 6 hours apart. For example: 2:18 AM, 8:18 AM, 2:18 PM, 8:18 PM, 2:18 AM ... etc. It cycles AM and PM, same times, for a day to many days until some condition causes it to change (evolve).
The times evolve. One day it could be cycling through at one time series, then it changes to another time sequence and continues until the next condition.
The data usage is anywhere from a few K to many MB. The largest I've seen is over 100 MB.
The logs clearly show these usages are not due to human interaction. It is a program.
If cellular connection is used frequently (by the owner), the pattern is hard to pick out. Luckily, my family member is very good about only using wifi whenever possible, so these mysterious use patterns are easy to pick out.
Verizon allows access to 90 days worth of data logs, so I downloaded and analyzed them. This has been happening for at least 90 days. I have found 298 instances of mysterious use out of 500 total connections to cellular. A total of 3.5 GB of mysterious cellular data has been recorded as used in that 90 days by this phone alone. Only .6 GB of the total cellular data use is legitimate, meaning by the person.
This issue is occuring across three different phones. Two are iPhone 5, and the third is a recently purchased iPhone 5s. The 5s I have not touched beyone the basic startup. I have left it alone on a desk for 3 days, and looking at the logs, the mysterious data use in the same pattern is occuring.
So ... I am speaking to both sides, Verizon and Apple to get answers. Verizon puts their wall up at data usage. It doesn't matter how it is being used, you simply need to pay for it. Yes, the evidence I have gathered is getting closer to someting on Verizon's end.
Before pressing in that direction, I am hoping someone reading this may recognize this issue as a possible iPhone 5 issue ... OR ... you, right now, go look at your data usage logs available through your carrier's web account, and see if you can pick out a pattern of mysterious use. Look especially at the early morning instances when you are most likely sleeping.
I am hoping this is a simple issue that has a quick resolution. I'm looking for the "ooohhh, I see that now ..." But I am starting to think this might be much bigger, but the fact is, most customers rarely or never look at their data usage details, much less discover mysterious use patterns.
The final interesting (maybe frightening part) thing about all this is that I discovered while talking to Verizon ... they do not divulge which direction the data is going. This goes for any use, mysterious or legitimate. Is cellular data coming to your phone, or leaving it? Is something pulling data from your phone? We know that it is possible to build malware apps, but the catch with my issue is that it is also happening on a brand new iphone 5s with nothing downloaded to it.
    Thanks for your time

Thanks for the replies. It took a while not hearing anything so thought I was alone. I have done many of the suggestions already. The key here is that it occurs on both phones with apps, and phones still packaged in a box.
A Genius Bar supervisor also checked his Verizon data usage log and found the same 6 hour incremental use. Suprisingly, he did not express much intrigue over that. Maybe he did, but did not show it.
I think the 6 hour incremental usage is the main issue here. I spoke with Verizon (again) and they confirmed that all they do is log exactly when the phone connected to the tower and used data. The time it records is when the usage started. I also found out that the time recorded is GMT.
What is using data, unsolicited, every 6 hours?
    Why does it change?
Why does it only happen on the iPhone 5 series and not the 4?
Since no one from Apple seems to be chiming in on this, and I have not received the promised calls from Apple tech support that the Genius Bar staff said I was suppose to receive, it is starting to feel like something is being swept under the rug.
I woke up the other day with another thought ... What application would use such large amounts of data? Well ... music, video, sound and pictures of course. Well ... what would someone set automatically that is of any use to them? hmmm ... video, pictures, sound. Is the iPhone 5 succeptible to snooping? Can an app be buried in the IOS that automatically turns on video and sound recording, and send it somewhere ... every 6 hours? Chilling. I noted that the smallest data usage is during the night when nothing is going on, then it peaks during the day. The Genius Bar tech and I looked at each other when I drew this sine wave graph on the log print outs during an appointment ...

  • What are the ideal specs for a DigiBeta master tape when authoring a "widescreen anamorphic" 16:9 SD DVD (original aspect ratio is 14:9)?

I just received the masters for a new SD DVD. I would like to author a "widescreen anamorphic" SD DVD horizontally squeezed widescreen image stored in a standard 4:3 aspect ratio DVD image frame. (On 4:3 displays, mattes should preserve the original aspect ratio. On 16:9 displays the image will fill the screen at the highest possible resolution.)
Below I've listed the specs of the Digi Beta master tapes the producers have sent to me for digitizing. I'd like to know this: What are the ideal specs for a DigiBeta master tape when authoring a widescreen anamorphic SD DVD, using material with an original aspect ratio of 14:9?
I've also listed my guesses below. Please let me know if my guesses are right. If not, please suggest alternatives (and if possible explain why.)
    TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS OF EXISTING MASTER:
    Tape: DigiBeta
    Original Aspect Ratio: 1.55 (14:9)
    Vid Rate: 29.97 fps
Pixel Aspect: NTSC - CCIR 601
    Frame Size: 720 x 480
Anamorphic: Full-Height Anamorphic (16:9 image displayed in letterboxed, non-distored 4:3)
    Display Format: 4:3 Letterbox
MY GUESS AT IDEAL TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS (for a DigiBeta, that is):
    Tape: DigiBeta
    Original Aspect Ratio: 1.55 (14:9)
    Vid Rate: 29.97 fps
    Pixel Aspect: Square
    Frame Size: 720 x 540
    Anamorphic: YES
Display Format: 16:9 Anamorphic (horizontally squeezed widescreen image)
Please feel free to ask for clarification or further information you need to answer my question.
Thank you so much in advance for your help!
    Best, Noetical.
BTW, I can't wait for the day when everything has gone digital and we get digital intermediates instead of tapes to digitize!

Hi Nick...thanks for taking the time to reply to my question.
    Nick Holmes wrote:
What you have there is a mess.
    NTSC pixels are never square.
NTSC is 720x486, even when it is Anamorphic.
You shouldn't be using an already letterboxed master to make an Anamorphic version. Get the master that was made before the letterboxing stage.
When you make an Anamorphic DVD it should display as 16:9 full screen automatically on widescreen TVs.
The same DVD will automatically letterbox on 4:3 TVs.
Um yeah...duh. That's exactly what I was trying to explain in the preface of my question. I'm sorry if I didn't make it clear...all these things you mention are the reasons I'm putting together a list of the technical specs of the DigiBeta I need so I can have them send that instead of the stupid letterboxed version.
Look, I'm sending this request to some intern at their offices in England, asking for a master with which I can make an Anamorphic DVD. They already sent me this master, which as you and I both agree is an idiotic asset to use for these purposes. As such, I was hoping for advice on a more precise way of requesting the master that I need than asking for "the master that was made before the letterboxing stage." Upon reflection, perhaps I'll just do that. If you or anyone else has a suggestion about something I should add to my request that would improve the odds of them sending the tape I need, please repond. Thank you!
BTW, It's been a long time since anyone has responded to something I've written or said as though I'm an idiot. I remember now that I don't really like it. (Moving along...)

  • USB 6009 - mysterious problem

Have mysterious problems with my new USB 6009.
    I'm using LabView 7 on MacOS-X 10.3.8.
All vi's of DAQmx show "ERROR 15 - Ressource not found".
    Then I tested:
    - "lsdaq" shows the device
    - "nidatalogger" works
    - "mxbaseconfig" doesn't recocgnize it!
I realy have no idea know what to do now?
    Thank you for helping.
    Greetings,
    Stephan

I happend to stumble over the same issue and found a solution.
The problem really seems to be the firmware in the USB-device. There is
only one way (I think) to make USB600x devices work with linux:
You have to start MAX (on a Windows-box) , go to tools - NI-DAQmx configuration - NI-DAQmx USB Driver Selector.
Press "Switch" and select the BASE-Driver for your USB-Device. This
seems to write something into the device's flash memory. After this
procedure you can use the device with linux and DAQmxBase
Funny thing is, mxbaseconfig still can't see it, but nidatalogger finds it.
Hope that helps, even though this thread seems to be rather old...

  • Random (mysterious) start-ups from shutdown on MBP 17" (Hi-Res)

    Hi,
lately, my MBP has started to turn itself on at night. I always shut it down completely after a days' work (NOT making it sleep or standby, also NOT closing the lid before the shutdown is done). Actually, I tried waiting 5-10 minutes before closing the lid after the shutdown just to make sure I wasn't interrupting anything.
Now, in the morning, my MBP sits there sleeping (the light on the front is in "breathing" mode), and after opening the lid it is completely booted up.
Syslog shows me it randomly started at some time in the night (between 1h and 5h hours after the shutdown.
Of course I made sure that I have not set a startup time in the power setting's scheduler.
What could be the reason for this?

My MBP 15in also mysteriously self-starts. I have determined that this occurs every evening at 7:00 pm sharp when the AC power is attached. This is despite the fact that I have no scheduled start-up time configured. I have yet to have it happen on battery. It has been happening regularly when nothing else is plugged in, not USB, FW, nothing. Sharing and remote management may be turned on or off as otherwise needed and have no noticed influence.

  • Mysterious Teardown Problem with NIO

I have an NIO proxy server which relays state information from a number of servers to a number of clients. A requirement for this system is that we can restart the proxy server (together with a couple of other components) from a web app.
I tear down the proxy server by
    - interrupting out of the read loop
    - cancelling all keys associated with the channel
    - closing the socket on the channel
    - closing the channel.
I do this for for both the input (server side) channel and the output (client side) channel.
I then discard the proxy server, create a new one and start it up.
Now here's the mysterious bit. The new server operates just fine for a minute or two. And then it stops seeing any input.
The thread responsible for input reading freezes on the call to -
myKeysAdded = myAcceptKey.selector().select();and the stack looks something like this:
WindowsSelectorImpl$SubSelector.poll0(long, int, int[], int[], int[], long)
    WindowsSelectorImpl$SubSelector.poll() line: 270
    WindowsSelectorImpl$SubSelector.access$400(WindowsSelectorImpl$SubSelector) line: 252
    WindowsSelectorImpl.doSelect(long) line: 133
    WindowsSelectorImpl(SelectorImpl).lockAndDoSelect(long) line: 69
    WindowsSelectorImpl(SelectorImpl).select(long) line: 80
    WindowsSelectorImpl(SelectorImpl).select() line: 84
ProxyServer$BrowserSelector.run() line: 123If I completely destroy the process (and the jvm) and start a new one everything goes back to working normally.
Has anyone got any suggestions? I'm in hair-tearing mode on this one.
    Thx TOTW.

I tear down the proxy server by
    - interrupting out of the read loopDon't you mean the select() loop?
    - cancelling all keys associated with the channelUnnecessary.
    - closing the socket on the channel
    - closing the channel.Only one of these is necessary. Closing the socket closes the channel and vice versa.
When you have closed all the channels, you then need to call selector.selectNow() (search this forum for why), and then close the selector.

  • Mysterious Data Usage

    Hello,
My wife owns an HTC Thunderbolt.  We are experiencing mysterious data usage.
The data log shows data usage during hours and at times when the phone is not being used.  We have tried closing all apps and resetting the phone.
Still, these nickel and dime data used entries are adding up fast and bring us to the brink of our our plan which we have already extended.
We do not stream video, we do not listen to Pandora.... The phone is used strictly for texts, emails, and phone calls.
Any advice?  Thank you for your help.

Same here - very similar.Times are close but not like yours.
I've deleted the email accounts and re-added them to see if there was a looping email send issue that I've read about.
Funny though, when I review the data use on the phone, "photo" is the app indicating using the most data. So I've turned off and uninstalled everything I can think is tied to that.

  • Mysterious forces changing backlight brightness

Some mysterious forces are changing my laptop's brightness and I can't seem to figure it out what it is.
For example, if my battery gets below 10% (also, why 10%?), it automatically changes brightness to something very low.
Similarly, if battery gets fully charged, it changes brightness. It also happens when I plug it into the AC or remove the adapter.
I've looked everywhere, tried changing settings (I really don't remember which ones anymore), but nothing seems to work.
Also, I've xfce4-power-manager installed, but closing it doesn't seem to effect this backlight changing.
Laptop-mode-tools is also set up, but backlight control is disabled.
My only idea is that it's changed by the driver, but how can I control it?
    edit:
    [soz@arch ~]$ lspci | grep VGA
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 2nd Generation Core Processor Family Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 09)
Also, changing backlight to vendor doesn't fix this. Instead it messes up xfce4-power-manager's backlight control.
Forgot to mention, I'm running a simple Openbox installation.

    Alright, an update.
The same thing happens even without running X at all. Even the brightness control keyboard hotkeys work without an X server running.
So it seems that they interact directly with hardware and it's not related to software at all. I think it's safe to say that the brightness change events happening on charger plug/unplug are related to this as well.
So if there's nothing in BIOS (I checked) I guess it's not fixable. I could set up an dirty hack using acpi handler scripts although it seems like an awful solution.
Or have you guys any other ideas?

  • Using widescreen and standard screen in one project.

I am making a film and just found out that about a quarter of the footage was taken in widescreen while the rest in standard. I would prefer to keep all of the footage in standard. Any ideas on how best to adjust the widescreen footage without distorting its quality?
    Thanks.

If the widescreen footage was shot in standard definition eg on a DV camera set to "widescreen" mode then you will unfortunately lose a little quality. This can't be avoided as you need to blow out the letterbox and crop some of the image to get it back to 4:3. Just drop the widescreen footage into your 4:3 timeline, double click the clip (in the timeline) to load it into the Viewer window, then switch to the Motion tab and set the Scale value to 134%. That will produce whats called a 4:3 Center Cut version of you widescreen clip. For best results you;ll probably want to reframe each of these clips to esure none of the important action is lost through cropping.
If the widescreen footage was shot in high definition eg on an HDV camera, then there should be quality hit perceivable in the SD project (because the HD source already has more than enough pixels to compensate for the rescale ). Just drop the 16:9 footage into the 4:3 timeline as before, but this time increase the Scale to 67% and reframe as needed.
