Widescreen DVD only playing in fullscreen???

Hello,
I'm having a problem playing a DVD on my Mac.
It is a professionally made wedding DVD in widescreen.
It plays in widescreen on my TV via the DVD player.
However, when played on a Mac, it only shows in fullscreen through both the DVD Player app and VLC.
Can anybody tell me why this might be?
Thanks.

Hi,
Sorry for the delay.
I have tried VLC.
What do you mean by "type of screen"?

  • My dvd only plays the left speaker of my song...

Hello everyone. I recently exported onto a dvd from adobe premiere 2.0 that included a song that i had recorded in mp3 format.
In the song, some of the instruments come out of the left speaker, and some come out of the right. When i play this video on a standard dvd player through a television, the mp3 only plays the audio that is supposed to come out of the left speaker, but it plays it through both speakers. This renders many of the instruments unhearable.
When i play it through a computer, though, with a dvd decoder, it plays everything perfectly.
    What should I do?

MP3's are very often problematic. First, I would check your source file in G-Spot, to see what it reports, 2-channel, or 1-channel.
Personally, I always convert ALL MP3's to PCM/WAV and Import those. This eliminates the issues, and Audition (or the freeware, Audacity) can do this easily. The only exception will be tiny SFX files, and most are mono anyway. Where did your MP3 come from?
Good luck, and let us know how it goes,

  • Set up is fine - burn dvd - dvd only plays 1 chapter (in place of other 4)?

Right, I make 4 films and export them to quicktime movies.
I open iDVD and use Green Linen (Chapters).
I drag my films on and add a background photo and some music.
Everything uploads fine and encodes fine.
I then burn the DVD and play it on my iBook or my iMac or my DVD player.
Front menu screen is fine, menu music fine - only one film in place of all the films. Each window is showing the film it is supposed to have, but when you press on it, you just get the same film.
    What is going on?
    Please help.
This is happening on my iMac. I am now trying to achieve the right films in the right slots on my iBook. Takes a very long time on an iBook!
    Thanks
    Frances

Let me offer a hypothetical: you are a salesperson working in a booth at a tradeshow with four different products to show. You make up a DVD with short movies demonstrating each of the four products. In the booth, you demonstrate each of the four prouducts for 15 minutes each hour on a rotation.
You start showing 'product 1' and select 'product 1' on the DVD. It continues to loop. After 15 minutes, you start to show 'product 2' - you hit 'menu' on the DVD remote, you go back to the menu and select 'product 2'. ... and so on.
I have found that not all DVD player's remotes do the same thing when a button like 'menu' is pressed, so this might not work with all players.
In any event, for your use, DO NOT set each movie to loop (as you have discovered).

  • Dvd only plays on certain players

i burned several dvd's using dvdsp they will play on some players but not on others. why is this?
the footage was ripped from a PAL dvd edited in final cut then output as animation codec @ 29.97fps imported into dvdsp encoded and burned any info would be very helpful. thanks

    Dear birdandtiger:
I just finished on of the free lectures at Apple Soho. I highly suggest it for the answers to your questions. Just stop in or go online to get a list of all the lectures. Soho has Final Cut and DVD Studio Pro on thursdays at this point but that could change.
I have found that I have a G4 and one of the earlier Apple Super Drives (DVD burners). = - RW etc etc I have found that my apple G4 and Super Drive will only burn Apple brand DVD-R discs. And I was told at the apple lecture these will play on all DVD players (not so with DVD+R that came out later).

  • DVD only plays select commercial DVDs

    Hey everyone,
This is literally the most frustrating thing I have ever dealt with.
When I put in a DVD to watch a movie usually the dvd drive with read the disk for awhile and then automatically eject it.
However, sometimes with other movies the dvd drive works perfectly fine.
Can someone please tell what in the world is going on?

Hey! I've been having the same problem with my Macbook Pro. The region code is the same as the dvds and its an absolute original dvd box set. I've not had this issue with most dvds...Only with my new dvds i've recently got.
When I put the dvd in..hardly stays in there for like 10seconds and then it ejects.
If you manage to find an answer, please let me know! I'll post it if I find something too! Thanks!

  • DVDs only play partially--what's happening?

Hi all! First of all, I tried asking this question previously, but it went unresolved and forgotten on the site. That being said, I want to apologize if this has been asked before--I did a quick search, and I didn't see my exact problem/issue...
Here's the deal: I have a movie file(s) in MPG format (or AVI) which is around 1hr 30 mins long, and around 650-700mb in size. (and NO it's not a bootleg movie! lol) Anyhow, I'd like to make a DVD out of it--nothing fancy, just something that plays in my set top player.
I have tried iDVD several times. As a first step duing my trials, I have SOMETIMES attempted to change the format of the file using third party tools (converting the file to DV or MOV). At other times, I've left the file as an MPG or AVI and made sure it was playable in iDVD in the preview pane.
Then, I make a rather simple menu screen, drag the asset into the "map," and start the encoding/burning process. When I'm done, the DVD seems ok, and it loads up nicely in my DVD player (I have a rather new Sony which I purchased specifically because it can play dozens of formats lol). HOWEVER, when the movie gets to the last 30 mins (or thereabouts), it starts to freeze up/stop, play very slowly, stutter etc.
What am I doing wrong??? One would think that there has to be a viable way to create a DVD from a 600-700mb video file without this happening. (And PLEASE don't tell me I have to chop the darn thing into chapters lol)
FYI: I've tried TOAST as well--when the process seems to be complete, I sometimes get an error message that says "hardware error," and/or "unable to write lead in lead out."
Any help would be appreciated. Even if you guys could point me to a "ste-by-step" guide or "how-to" for what I'm trying to do... in other words, if you were doing what I was doing, how would you do it? I'm willing to tart from scratch using your instructions.
    Thanks again, everyone!

"but it went unresolved and forgotten on the site."
Not really. You posted your previous issue in the iDVD Forums not the G5 iMac Using DVD/CD Forums:

  • IMac ejects blank DVDs only (plays DVDs, CDs and accepts blank CDs)

I see a lot of threads with a similar theme to my question - but not one that matches it, so have started a new thread.
My iMac will play commercial DVDs, DVDs I have burnt myself and commercial CDs, and will write to blank CD, but ejects blank DVDs (after 5-10 seconds of thinking about it). I have tried a range of blanks (different types and manufacturers). Does anyone have any ideas on this? I'm thinking it's a curious software issue as the superdrive is otherwise functioning perfectly.
    Thanks in advance

This issue is common and does not seem to be confined to any particular iMac model or Optical Drive brand that is used in them. Although it might help to know what iMac you have, what OS X it is running and what program(s) you are using to burn DVDs...?
    1. Try toggling your Blank DVD: Preference, from the current selection to another and then back to "Ask what to do"
    2. Try cleaning the Superdrive with a standard Lens Cleaning Kit.
Example: > Memtek 32020029479 CD and DVD Lens Cleaning Kit: Electronics
    3. Try creating either a burn folder (in Finder) or have your finished project ready to burn (in other App's) and force them to ask for a blank Disc.
    4. Then if you still can not use Blank DVDs, contact Apple Support and make arrangments for a service appointment.

  • TA26788 I only want my widescreen iDvd to behave like a regular widescreen DVD.

I only want my widescreen iDvd movie to play in letterbox format on standard TVs, and widescreen on widescreen TVs, just like regular widescreen DVDs.
I am using iMovie and iDVD, can this be done without additional software?

Yes. I  fact I have never seen a movie made with iDVD 7 that worked in any other way!

  • My Mac has suddenly stopped playing my DVDs including a DVD it played fine only 3 days ago. Does anyone have any idea what could be wrong and how I could fix it? Thank you.

My Mac has suddenly stopped playing my DVDs including a DVD it played fine only 3 days ago. I insert the DVD and wait for the player to start automatically but after 10 minutes, nothing is happening and it sounds like the disk has stopped spinning. I've now tried with four different DVDs (all store bought and so perfectly normal disks). The Mac doesn't eject the disk or anything it just doesn't seem to respond to it being there at all.
My main confusion is why this suddenly happened today when it was perfectly fine last week.
Does anyone have any idea what could be wrong and how I could fix it? Thank you.

  • My burned DVD is playing in black and white only ?

When I burned my imovie using idvd the dvd will only play in black and white. I tried the DVD in two dvd players. Everything previews in color on imovie & idvd.
Did I accidentally click something or change a setting?

There are at least 2 possible scenarios here you may need to double check both.
    1. You can do B&W in iMovie but apparently you say it previews fine and in full color within iDvd. Is this correct?
    2. There are no loose connections or reversed cables on your camcorder or dvd player. Double check them and make sure they are all in the correct inputs (audio vs. video) and are snug and fit properly. If necessary, try all new cables or at the very least try a different set of cables.

  • Error Messages When Burning / Disk only plays in certain DVD players

When burning most all of my DVD's in DVD Studio Pro, after all of the encoding in the burn process and the program starts the initialization, I get a Media Error Calibration Error message. When I retry to burn, everything seems fine. But, my DVD's only play in some DVD players. Others say unreadable disc. Any ideas?

  • Only part of DVD will play in QT 7

I burned home videos to dvd. Only a certain segment of the dvd will play on qt. what am I doing wrong. The whole dvd plays fine on "DVD player".

There are four .VOB files and only the first (which is basically usless) and the last have any size to them at all. The other to .VOB files have "zero kb"!
The QT Player only loads on file (VOB) at a time. If you opt to open multiple files (VOBs) simultaneously, they will open in multiple QT players. Therefore, if your 4 VOBs represent a single "Title" (i.e., series like VTS051.VOB, VTS052.VOB, VTS053.VOB, VTS054.VOB,) and you want to open them as a single segmented stream for sequential playback, then use an application like MPEG Streamclip or VLC here. Since it appears you already have the QT MPEG-2 Playback component installed, I would use MPEG Streamclip. If the VOBs represent multiple titles, I would still open the VOBs in MPEG Streamclip since it scans for timecode breaks as it opens the VOB(s) but may or may not catch them all. (I usually perform an manual "fix" even if I don't get a warning while loading file(s). In any case, you can then always convert the VOB(s) to a fully compatible QT format if you want.

  • I cannot play a region 1 DVD only Region 4 on Qosmio X500

    Hi All
How do I get around this as I cannot play a region 1 DVD only Region 4?
    Regards

    Thanks, tried that, already locked
The main reason for requesting is that I travel worldwide and would like to watch a movie but am unable to do so because of this I have to carry any movies with me which is extra weight and I used to purchase a DVD/s in the country I am in at the time and once finished give it away or post it home as not to have the extra weight on me.
    Thanks again

  • Letterboxing HD sequence for DVD to play on standard TVs?

I have edited a sequence in Final Cut Express 4.0.1 that is HD 1440x1080, Apple Intermediate Codec, 25 fps.
I would like to create a letterboxed version to place on a DVD that will play on standard size TVs -- and keep the quality of the original video.
    Here's what I've tried:
    1. First, I used "Easy Setup" to create a separate NTSC sequence. I then dragged my original HD sequence icon into the canvas of the NTSC sequence and dropped into the overwrite box. However, it says, "Your sequence should be set to the format of the clips you are editing. Change sequence settings to match the clip settings?" If I say yes, the new sequence becomes like the original sequence, which defeats the point. If I say no, it gives me the error message, "Operation not allowed. You cannot nest sequences with different editing timebases."
    2. I exported my original HD sequence as a QuickTime movie. I brought that .mov icon into the browser, then dragged it into the canvas of the NTSC sequence and dropped into the overwrite box. This successfully creates a letterbox, but the quality of the video suffers greatly. I would be embarrassed to show this version.
    3. I exported my original HD sequence using QuickTime conversion. I tried many different settings, sizes, etc. I often checked the "Preserve aspect ratio using letterbox" option. However, no matter what I did, the video was distorted every time, not letterboxed but stretched vertically.
    4. I tried creating a DVD with the .mov of my original HD sequence. In iDVD, I burned two copies, one using the 4:3 setting and one using the 16:9 setting. Both created a DVD that plays fine on my computer, but is too wide to play correctly on my TV. The edges of the picture go off the right and left sides of the TV screen.
I need to be able to put this sequence on a DVD that will play on TVs. Does anyone have ideas for how to solve this?
    Thanks for your help!

    Hi Tom,
    I really appreciate your help!
Yes, it seems the original material is widescreen.
I am using QuickTime 7.5.5. In the QuickTime Movie Inspector, the values are:
    Format: DV, 720 x 480 (853 x 480)
    Normal size: 853 x 480 pixels
    Current size: 853 x 480 pixels (Actual)
However, in Final Cut Express the same clip in Item Properties has a value of:
    Frame size: 720x480
But I can see just by looking at the video that it is not standard size SD. So I tried:
    1. Copying the edited clips from the timeline of the HD sequence and pasting into the NTSC sequence, then removing the attributes. The video is still distorted, lengthened vertically.
    2. Using Easy Setup to create a new NTSC Anamorphic sequence, then copying in the edited clips from the timeline of the HD sequence. The video is not distorted vertically or horizontally, but it does not appear correctly. Only the inner section of the video displays -- it's as if the frame has been zoomed in on every clip. If, however, I pull one of the clips from the bin directly into the new NTSC Anamorphic timeline, the video appears correctly. It does not have black letterbox bars, but simply appears widescreen as it did in the HD sequence.
Does it sound to you like starting over is my best solution?
Before I do, I'd like to confirm that I will be able to export a copy using these settings and burn a DVD that will play on standard TV.
I tried exporting the NTSC Anamorphic sequence with the one correctly-appearing clip. I used QuickTime Conversion and tried setting the size at each NTSC 720x480 4x3 and 768x576 SD with the "Preserve aspect ratio using letterbox" option checked. However, each time this created a movie that was both letterboxed and lengthened vertically -- as if the black bars at top and bottom are not wide enough.
Do you think NTSC Anamorphic is the best setup for this size video?
    Thanks again!

  • Creating anamorphic widescreen dvds

Does iDVD (in combination with iMovie) now produce anamorphic widescreen DVDs from a 16:9 camcorder source?
I'm currently using iLife '05, and the DVDs it produces are not anamorphic widescreen, which means when I play them back on DVD Player, they have a 2" border on all sides of the screen.

    Andrew,
You are talking about two different issues with iLife 05 - Importing anamorphic video into iMovie HD (in iLife 05) and then burning anamorphic 16:9 DVDs with iDVD.
Many 16:9 cameras work great with iMovieHD. I even created anamorphic 16:9 DV files with both iPhoto and PhotoToMovie that also worked great with iMovieHD (05). However, some cameras do have the pillarboxing issues you pointed out and Matti referenced. I do not know whether or not this was fixed for your camcorder for iLife06.
The second issue iLife05 has is how it creates 16:9 anamorphic video in iDVD5. Actaully this does work correctly! It's only the conversion of the anamorphic 16:9 to letterboxed 4:3 for 4:3 TV's that is an issue. If you take a "good" 16:9 anamorphic movie in iMovie and transfer it to iDVD5, it does encode as anamorphic - it just doesn't set the flag right for display on 4:3 TVs.....they are full screen 16:9 anamorphic DV for 16:9 displays, and play correctly on my 16:9 plasma TV at the normal WS setting with no distortion, just like commercial WS DVDs. If this were not an anamorphic signal, I would have to use the "zoom" setting, which is how I view letterboxed cable shows. If you read David Althoff's site carefully, you will note that iDVD5 can use 16:9 encoding, but the playback flag is not forced to letterbox it for 4:3 displays.
Now I'm not saying that you haven't had the issue of getting 4:3 encoding....and your 2 inch border does suggest that! I think your main problem is the import of the movie into iMovie in the first place is creating 4:3 video, and once you've got that, iDVD isn't going to fix it.
You need to make sure that your start a 16:9 WS DV project, and then import your video with the preferences "unchecked" as Matti suggests.
And what kind of camera do you have???
    John B.
