Widescreen Export to Compressor - HELP!!

I've read a few threads about this, but am still having problems getting this to work. I've shot an entire movie in 16x9 format on my DVCAM (Sony PDX10). I imported into FCP 4.5 and set the sequence to Anamorphic. All looks fine on the viewer. However, when I try to export to Compressor, I use the 90 Minute High Quality Widescreen preset - but all i get is the 4:3 version on the preview.
Here's the weird thing: If I select a random clip and put it on another timeline NOT set to Anamorphic, when I import that to Compressor - voila. It looks widescreen as it did in FCP.
Any ideas how to sort this out? I have to get a DVD done pretty quick and this is driving me nutz!!

  • FCP CRASHES WHEN I EXPORT TO COMPRESSOR... Please help.

    Hello everyone,
I'm trying to export my FCP sequence to compressor through FCP and not through a Self Contained Movie, because I hear it produces better results. I Export to compressor and Compressor loads the project and begins to compress... it gets through the audio, and I would guess 75% of the video and FCP crashes. I've tried to do this now 6 times with the same results.
My project is a Panasonic HD 720P and is about 32 minutes long. I don't know if that info will help, but does anyone have any suggestions?
    Thanks guys, and gals...

    hi,
i can only guess here as you have not provided any information about the crashing itself. Is it Unexpected Error, then a quit; is it a lock up without an error message?
    Things to look for:
    1. Check that the sequence is appropriate for the format you are editing... it is likely that it is as FCP auto checks it on first clip assemble. Check anyway.
    2. Check that the media you are compressing is COMPLETE.. check each scene in the sequence.. sounds like you may have a dodgy scene/media. This would seem likely if you are experiencing crashing always at the same place during compression.
    3. Check to see if you accidently put in any compression markers... take these ALL OUT if you dont need them
    4. Check compressor.. compress a small file of the same format (different scenes) to check compressor is functioning. This also may help you narrow down your dodgy media if there is any.
Hope this is of some help.
    Good Luck.

  • Help needed!!! Exporting using compressor

    Hi!
I´m exporting an animation using the option Export using compressor, since I have quite a few proyects to export. I do this in order to have a batch export. Everything goes all right, no errors or something strange, but whe i check the render file, the font that i´m using in the motion proyect has been substituted by another one.... WHY??????
    thanks!

yup, I can confirm this problem -- you can't use a font that's activated using something like Suitcase Fusion -- I've tried double clicking the font and installed it into fontbook, no joy. I moved the font into my font library (root) and still no joy.
I'm using a TTF -- should I be using an OTF or bitmap font? It's StartlingFont.

I've been seeing crashes while exporting to Compressor. First was for MPEG2 encode, now for H.264 (appleTV) encode.

  • Exporting 16:9 help please!

I just recently got Final Cut Studio 2 and have been working on a short trailer for an independent film.
Just for starters: I shot everything in widescreen with a Sony PD170 and imported everything through Final Cut. The trailer is all put together but I'm having trouble exporting and have it show in Quicktime or w/e in true 16:9 widescreen. In Final Cut, it looks great and things seem to be all in widescreen, btu when exporting or trying to, I'll open the Quicktime file and it looks like its in 4:3 and there's no letterbox. I've gone through settings and everything clicking letterbox/widescreen but it doesn't show me the true bars when I open the Quicktime file.
Any ideas!? This is driving me crazy because I worked with Avid a lot, but love Final Cut and I just want a decent looking widescreen quicktime file to put online/DVD!
    Thank you!

You're giving me instruction for DVD Studio Pro, but I posted my question on the FCP forum. I'm having trouble exporting my file from FCP and have not even gotten far enough to get into DVD Studio Pro yet.
Here is a further description of the problems:
The movie looks fine in FCP. When I created the sequence "Easy Setup" I selected DV NTSC 48 kHz Anamorphic. As soon as I did that, the 4 x 3 windows that were in FCP previously were replaced with wide 16 x 9 windows. I then captured the footage from my DV tape shot with the Canon XL2 set for 24p and 16 x 9 settings on the camera. After capturing the footage all looks fine. Looks like 16 x 9 wide frame.
But....here is where I start having problems....
What do I do next? Normally when I work with 4 x 3 DV, I just select "Export/Quicktime Movie/Current Settings". But if I do that with this project, I end up with a 4 x 3 movie when I view it in Quicktime. So I tried it again. I selected "Export/Quicktime Movie/DV NTSC 48 kHz Anamorphic". The resulting Quicktime movie still appears in a 4 x 3 window. When I look at the specs for the Quicktime movie it says it is 720 x 480. This is 4 x 3.
Should I be exporting with Compressor instead of straight from FCP? Why is the movie showing up in a 4 x 3 window after exporting when in FCP the windows are wide and narrow? Did my camera actually shoot 4 x 3 video and just insert bars at the top and bottom to give it the "appearance" of wide when it really isn't? Can someone please give me some enlightenment please?
Please excuse my ignorance. I am not a professional in the video field as most of you probably are. I am a firefighter who is helping out my fire department create training videos using the XL2 that the department purchased. I am their "expert", even though I am just a self-taught hobbyist who has only worked with DV in 4 x 3 aspect ratio in the past....and I'm not all that knowledgeable even with that. I would really appreciate some help. I am trying to read through the material, but it is a little challenging for me....and the department wants this project finished soon. Thanks a lot if anyone can help me.

  • Footage pixelated when exported with compressor

I've film HD video and edited with FCP, the aspec ratio on the sequence is 720x480 anamorphic, and it looks great, when I export it with QuicK Time it looks great but DVD Studio Prp doesn't support the settings. when I export it with Compressor, DVD Studio Pro imports it fine, but it is very, very pixelated.
What would be the best option to use when exporting with Compressor.
What I want is that the WideScreen image shrinks when viewing it on a Standard TV, I've done it with iDVD but when watching it on a standard tv is cuts the two sides of the image.
    Thank you for your help.

If editing HD material you would be best off editing in the HD timeline, size and Codec (not sure if you did that and then down rezzed?) SD DVDs used compressed video, so anything that compresses things more prior to the compression to an SD m2v (video used on DVDs) can lead to more of a quality hit.
Anyway what you would do is export the movie as self-contained movie, reference movie or directly to Compressor to a 16:9 m2v preset (including one you made yourself) and use that in DVD SP
Take a look [at this thread|http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=11040698&#11040698] and [this thread|http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=11287710#11287710]
I outline the procedures a bit more and also include links to some movies and other information

  • Exporting via Compressor - submit - failed

When I use Export via Compressor - and I use QT Pro Res - and destination is Movies Folder, then submit - then in the History window it has returned "Failed" 3 times now. The status bar shows, but never any indication that it even starts to work its magic or anything - just after a few seconds, maybe a minute, the word Failed appears. Argh. The motn project is 5 minutes long full of stills and a little video with audio. Help - what am I doing wrong?
In looking thru this forum, I thot the best export would be QT ProRes - is that causing the failure?
I previously exported via QT(not compressor) and the resulting file is 10gb which doesn't run smoothly but jerks and hiccups like a pre-rendered file. And 10gb wont fit onto DVD which is where this project will go - as a gift.
    help

I surely do not take it personal. I have learned that you folks in this group are the best resource I have. I know I am in way over my head. I truly do not know about codecs.
I have taken Motion directly in to FCP - but I didn't think it would work this time. I should have tried.
Someone came along at work and told me to use Visual Hub and use setting for mp4, and also try using the DV - ready for FCP - I did both. I really never think of it as wasted effort if I can learn by what I doing, and that is occurring as you are all explaining to me what I should be doing.
Now as for workflow - I think I did the right thing by starting with Motion, then with the big file sizes went to Visual Hub - but probably could have just gone to opening the Motion files in FCP - then rendering out for DVSP.
System settings are a boggle to me - so I just use NTSC - DV 720x480 and hope that works - so far the results in my projects are good.
Again, Thank you for taking time to explain - I appreciate all comments.

  • Cannot export to Compressor from Final Cut Pro 5.1

This message shows up "A file of this name already existed" when I export to Compressor from final Cut Pro 5.1
    Please help...

I have almost the same problem. When I export a file directly from Final Cut Pro 5.1, the application crashes. Have you had any answer?
    Please reply.

  • Exporting using Compressor failed, and other awekward issues with FCP

Hi FCP gurus! I need your help!
Everytime I try to export using compressor, my submission fails.
I even try a sequence a exported as m2v on Monday, but today is not working.
Compressor will some times say "Unable to view preview, FCP is busy". When I press submit, it goes to Batch Processor but it either will immediately show FAILED or it will just not do any processing. When I quit and restart, then the submission appears as failed.
Also when exporting, FCP comes back with a pop message saying that 4 files went offline. When I try to reconnect them it says: "There are not clips selected that have files associated with them". So, why is FCP constantly not able to fine this files, if they are not been used?
I need to export a file for my soundtrack guy, and he needs MOV, preferable DV-PAL or Motion-JPEG or similar frame-based codecs. What are my options?
In any case, what the problem here is that I CANNOT export anything. What shall I do? I already restarted the computer twice, nothing.
I realized that I have files using in this project, saved in two different external harddrives, do you think this has anything to do with the issue?
    I am using FCP 5.1.4
    Thanks so much in advance!

First off, fwiw, I never "send to compressor."  I export a self-contained QT movie, not a conversion.  Then I run that through compressor with the appropriate settings.  I like the self contained file, it becomes a master from which I can make all sorts of variations.  The only difference, in theory between self contained and reference, is that if for any reason you lose the render files the reference movie will not work.
    Q1 No.
    Q2 see above
Q3  There is no such thing as uncompressed.  It's just a different codec rather than a perfect copy of your timeline.
Q4 lots of reasons for making a conversion, but none of them are valid for making DVD's
Q5  Nothing wrong with letting DVDSP make the encoding-- just be sure to get into the preferences for DVDSP and set the destinations to a folder for the project, so you don't overwrite any other projects.  Depending on how long the project is, you can let it encode in the bg while you set up your project, build the buttons etc.  It's all the same encoding engine, whether is is done in compressor or dvdsp.   I find it much faster to use compressor then to take to dvdsp becaue you can use quickcluster.
Now a couple of questions for you:  what sort of footage are you using and what are your fcp sequence settings?

  • Exporting using Compressor problem

I have a 3 minute Motion sequence that I can't export in Compressor - it takes over 5 hours to get halfway through the process. It looks as though Compressor has crashed, it goes so slow.
Basically I need to make a DVD in DVDSP, urgently. I exported as an H264 Quicktime, which was a breeze, but that comes up as incompatible format when I import this asset into DVDSP.
What to do? Another CODEC? What MPEG 2 setting might work in Compressor?

I should add I've read a few posts hinting that Motion is pretty rubbish at lengths of 3 minutes and when you have masks, particles, replicators and a load of images (as I have) it's hard to export. I didn't know that - the manual doesn't warn us!!
Does rendering in Motion help with the export, or does that just help with smooth playback in Motion itself?
I exported the file as 10 bit uncompressed, just to see how big that .mov was, and it comes in at 4.3Gb. Hopefully that gives readers of this thread an idea.

  • Weird file format produced when exporting to Compressor

I em exporting to Compressor from FCP to create an MPEG 2 video. In the past, it's always produced an "_MPEG - 2 Video_." Now it's creating an _"MPEG-2 ( which is followed by a bunch of Japanese symbols)"_. Don't know why this is happening. The default app to open is now a Droplet instead of Quicktime. Also when I try to export to compressor I am getting a message of "Selection contains no media." I am able to work around this, but this is coinciding with this other problem.
I also recall that some of my MPEG - 2 files that were created as QTs have been converted (how? I don't know, but I am suddenly recalling) to this weird Droplet format.
    Thanks for the help.

    Hi,
this rings a bell, anyhow, here something to try:
-Try to export as QT movie self contained (this will keep identical quality) from FCP and import that in Compressor.
-- Use [this little application|http://www.digitalrebellion.com/pref_man.htm] to trash preferences of bothj FCP and Compressor (note: with preference manager you can back up and reinstall your current preferences if you wished to).
Finally something I'd rather suggest if I had more info handy, however,
--- In Compressor's main menu>Compressor>Click on reset background process then resbmit.
    Any of all these help?
    G.

  • Exporting in Compressor VS. exporting in FCP

    Hey guys,
I've noticed that when I send a sequence for exporting through compressor it normally takes almost as 10 times longer for it to export compared to when I export directly in FCP. Why is it doing that and what can I do to make compressor export as fast as FCP or at least faster than how it is right now? I installed 8GB or ram on my iMac because I thought that would help but I guess not.
    Thanks

Exporting using the Export QuickTime Movie command creates a clip using the settings selected and the render files generated by FCP. From a fully rendered timeline, even a self-contained movie can be output rather quickly.
Exporting using the Export Using Compressor command causes FCP to disregard the render files and re-render every frame in the timeline using the source footage and all applicable effects and filters. This can under some circumstances create a higher quality clip for Compressor to work with. The downside is that it takes a great deal of time and does not support all third-party filters. Another issue is that high quality .mov file is output for "insurance", so if Compressor fails or if you need to create another version of the timeline, you have to go back to the timeline and export again.
Many editors use a workflow that includes an Export QuickTime Movie to create the "insurance" clip, then load it to Compressor for whatever versions if the clip are needed (for example, MPEG-2 for DVD and H.264 for web distribution.) I have no data, but most editors feel that this workflow is substantially faster and involves less risk. The final upside is that FCP is not tied up for extended periods doing the export.

  • Export using Compressor - How?

I just got DVDSP, v3, and now the "Export>Using Compressor" menu option is available. When I selected it, I couldn't figure out how to get my files to be accessible in Compressor without first doing a "QuickTime Conversion".....
So, why and/or how the purpose for "Export>Using Compressor"???
Or do I even want to do this? From what I read on the forums, it sounds like I will get the best quality final product on my pushing-the-time-limits DVD that was shot with marginally acceptable quality video (DV) by tweaking the presets in Compressor. So that sounds like I need to get uncompressed files into Compressor (....and figure out how to "tweak" it....).
If I just drop a .fcp (Final Cut Express Movie File) into DVDSP, will there be any loss of quality vs using Compressor on its own first?
Well, I guess this shows my inexperience, to be sure, and I apologize to the forum for asking "newbie" questions....
Thanks in advance for the help!
    CD

There are no batch send to Compressor, but you should be able to send them one after the other and set them off in the Compressor queue.
after I start the first one the system locks me out until it is finished.
Not sure what's happening here. What versions are you using? This doesn't happen for me. I can set a number of projects one after the other to Compressor, set the process, submit it, and return to FCP to set up the next one. The Compressor queue goes through them one after the other in the order in which they're submitted.

  • Exporting using Compressor

This seems to be the same problem others have had. I was able to export with Compressor yesterday, but September 12th seems to be error date with Compressor. When I export, from FCP Studio 5 to Compressor I get a " File error: A File of this name already exists". It will then open Compressor, start the export, then fail. I've trashed the FCP, Compressor and Quicken prefs. Any solitions? Me, like so many others, are baffled that this would happen.
Dual 2ghz PowerPC G5, 3.5 gb ddr sdram, FCP Studio 5

I've been plagued by this since day one, and tonight I found a solution! If you are using an antivirus software, disable it. Save your FCP file and quit FCP and Compressor. Re-open your FCP file and go to File>Export Using Compressor again and all will be well. There is a post on Apple's Support site about this. Here's the link:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303261
    Hope this helps.
