Widescreen iMovie to YouTube?

Hi - I have made my first widescreen video in iMovie. I exported it according to YouTube's specs, and of course, when I play the QuickTime movie it's all squished. Is there a way to export it for YouTube so that the aspect ratio is preserved, either by letterboxing or pan and scan? Can it be done with iMovie, or would I need some other software?
TIA!

Thanks for that Tilman. I previously posted one video to YouTube using the following settings:
In iMovie, select File>Export>QuickTime. Compress movie for: Expert Settings. Share. Export: Movie to Quicktime Movie>Options. Video>Settings: MPEG-4 Video, 30 frames per second, Key frames: Automatic, Compression: medium quality. Data rate: Automatic. Size>Dimensions: 320 x 240 QVGA. Save sound as AAC, 44.1Khz, mono, Quality:Normal, Target bit rate: 64 kbps
So if I'm understanding you, I export the widescreen iMovie project with the changed aspect ratio, then I create a NEW iMovie project in 4:3 and export THAT one to YouTube using the above settings?
Thanks. This is all new to me and unfortunately I know just enough to be dangerous!

how do i export a video made in imovie to youtube in the best quality possible?

You can only export in the same resolution that you imported.
That is if you shot in 720p you cannot export in 1080p.
Share > YouTube and select the highest resolution available.

i cant export my imovie to youtube because I dont have google chrome or firefox-- however i once downloaded google chrome to my windows lap top and it went spaz... unsure if this will happen to the mac?/ any help

Sorry.  I do not have an answer.  My movie was much longer but only 640x480.  The upload page is different than it was the last time that I used it.  It is much simpler now but seemed confusing at first.  There was a line near the top of the window that made me think athere was a problem but the upload soon finished.  I think youtubes video quality has improved.  Maybeupload a previously uploaded file, change the name,  to see if it works

  • How do I publish an iMovie to YouTube?  (Beginner here and I keep getting a communication error)

When publishing iMovie to YouTube I keep getting a communication error at the end saying to make sure I am connected to the internet.  Can anyone tell me why this is?

Thanks for your reply Matt, that is what I have been doing, but I was really hoping it would be possible to do this from the Sharing menu on either or both of my iPhone or iMovie.
I guess I shall be disappointed yet again. As so often, "So much promise, so little delivery."

  • Distorted Audio- iMovie to Youtube Upload

I uploaded my video from iMovie to youtube (using the following http://support.google.com/youtube/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=1696878)
However, the audio is distorted when I try to play it on youtube (even though it is not distorted on iMovie).
I have uploaded it a number of times, but every time the audio is distorted
    Any suggestions?

Hey would you mind expanding on how you used/created an ACC version of your audio? Was it through an Imovie to Quicktime movie export as this link below describes? I've also copied and pasted the instructions indented in quotations. The solution provider in that forum tells how to export the movie to quicktime with special ACC etc settings and claims that it resolves the issue but my Imovie ('11,  version 9.0.9) won't go through the export...I've tried at least 5  times...it starts and says it's going to take about 30 minutes and works  for about 10, often as the clock goes up instead of counting down and  then the window disappears and nothing has been exported....  I'd love  to resolve this issue...it has only been happening to me since I figured  out how to ask the audio to duck other tracks and tweak equalizer  settings so it's gotta be something to do with the fact that either the  equalizer settings confuse youtube it the .mov format it exports in on  default settings (without the ACC tweak which I haven't found a way to  do yet)...any new guidance? Trying to get this done yesterday!! I've also sent a personal msg to the person who said they solved the issue in that forum to see if I can get any more specific guidance...seems like a signifcant amount of people have been having this issue! Heeeelp pleeeez!  http://productforums.google.com/forum/#!topic/youtube/bs8mgyVMSEU
"Try saving the file as a QuickTime movie on your desktop and uploading it from there. Use Share > Export using QuickTime > Movie to QuickTime Movie  > Options to get movie settings box. Use video Compression H.264 Quality medium or High and Sound AAC 44.100kHz, and I use bit rate 192kbps. That should upload from your desktop with no problems."

  • IMovie and Youtube: Sharing directly vs. Uploading later?

    Hello!
I'm starting to use iMovie and Youtube for my home movies.
Do you know if there are any differences in video quality between:
    sharing directly from iMovie on Youtube, and;
sharing as a file on the desktop (ProRes) which is uploaded later to Youtube?
    Thank you. :-)

afaik, the YT-preset is an excellent compromise of quality vs size.
You'll notice, a proRes (your iM craetes proRes??)  export is 20x - 40x 'bigger' => asks for some bandwidth in your internet connection...
    And is it 'better'?
I dare to say: theoretically for sure, but practical, noticeable? No.
Most consumer devices compress internally 4:2:0, using interframe codecs, ... and who cares about ISO/gain, bit-rates, dynamics etc etc when your camera has easy to use auto-modes ?
What I want to say: when the source is allready 'compressed to death', why caring about the last .5% of 'quality' diff. upload strategies can result in?
Make a test! There're three reallife scenarios, which makes any encoder to cry to its limits:
Gradients - record the sky in the golden/blue hour ... look out for banding
Movements - record a tiny creek with some whirls … look out for 'blocks'
Darkness - the h.264 (=AVCHD/mts/most .mov…) codecs weak point, look for 'blocks' and/or 'color spots' aka artifacts …
If you manage to create locally a video WITHOUT these failures, upload to YT; wait, until YT offers the HDef versions of your video, compare with your local version....

  • I am trying to upload an imovie to youtube. it says project too large but i have permission for larger projects. Help and thanks.

I am trying to upload an imovie to youtube. It keeps saying "project too large" even though I have permission from youtube for over 15 minutes. Please help. Thanks.

share the video via a quicktime movie in whatever format you want to use, I usually create an mp4.  Once you that video is set (I usually save to my desktop) go ahead and upload from YouTube rather than going direct from iMovie.  I suspect you will not have the same size issue.

  • Export iMovie to YouTube for iPad

does anyone know how to export imovie to youtube for ipad?  I have tried everything that I found on the web and nothing seems to work.  Thanks!

Since Maverick/iMovie '10 I prefer to do in in two steps because the one-step method (direct upload to YouTube) is not working properly. Exporting the movie (option share as a file) in the highest quality and, second step, upload your movie in YouTube works fine to me.

  • IMovie to YouTube = horrid quality! Why?

I just created a 1min.4sec. iMovie and sent it to YouTube from within iMovie but the results are horrible! I tried it twice, once in medium quality 640x360 and once in high quality 960x540. You can see the results for yourself:
    medium: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6gvZ3PtD4po
    high: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y5445Vm117w
What gives and how can I improve the quality?

I think both iMovie and YouTube are compressing the videos but the real problem is the compression coming from iMovie! As a test of my theory I saved the video on my Mac as an .avi and it uploaded with Safari instead of directly from iMovie. The results were stunning in comparison. As a further test I then saved it as a .mov and again uploaded it via the browser, I now have perfection!
see results without using iMovie to upload the vid:
    .avi = http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xLT4Znxx6GE
    .mov = http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eSZ5_vs4QUY
So the obvious results are the compression coming from iMovie is the problem, not YouTube.

  • When I try to upload an iMovie to YouTube as I've successfully been able to in the past. I get a message that keeps saying that I need to sign in to YouTube when I am already.

I'm sorry!   This is my 1st post to the support community and I put my problem in the topic bar!  When I try uploading an iMovie to YouTube I keep getting a message to sign into YouTube when I am already!!  I've done this in the past with no problem...including as recent as in December.  Hope you can help ... Need for my students ASAP.

Do you have the YouTube app loaded on your iPad?  Are you signed in there (in that app)?

  • I made an iMovie, 6.0.3 using music from iTunes and photos from the Internet. It looked fine on iMovie, but when I uploaded it to youtube, some of the photo near the beginning was corrupted. What steps should I take to export iMovie for youtube?

I made an iMovie, 6.0.3 using music from iTunes and photos from the Internet. It looked fine on iMovie, but when I uploaded it to youtube, some of the photo near the beginning were corrupted on youtube. I tried a different photo, and the corruption took place at the same moment of the video. How do I prepare the video for export to get it ready for youtube? I wasn't sure whether to clik web or web streaming. Am I supposed to clik Quick Time after I clik Share?

I unfortunately cannot remember where I got the 'trrndlines' plugin... I assume that it must have been from CFX (as it is located under /Users/Dom/Library/iMovie/Plug-ins/cfx/XXXtrrndlines.bundle).
As for what it does, I also do not know, as I do not think I ever used it in my previous video projects.
At this stage, I think I just need to uninstall it so that iMovie doesnt try to use it.
Do you know how to uninstall a CFX plugin in iMovie?
NOTE: I have re-installed iMovie 6.0.4 (instead of iMovie 6.0.3), but still encounter the same issue.

  • How come, when I upload a home video from iMovie to YouTube, the uploaded video is not iPad/iPhone supported?????

I connected a couple of home video clips from my iPhone in iMovie and then uploaded it to YouTube so that I could share the link with family. When the upload is complete, the video says that it is no in iPhone format and cannot be viewed? Whats up with that crap? Is there something I can do about it?

You tube converts the video to multiple formats when you upload.
Sometimes it takes a while for the video to be viewable.
And sometimes you tube converts to other formats before it makes ios versions.
Just wait a few hours and try again.
It will become viewable in time.
If it does not then you would be better to contact google.
You tube is theirs, and issues need to be told to them.

  • IPhone 4 video to iMovie to YouTube=BLURRY

I shot a couple videos this past weekend and went ahead and purchased the iMovie application on my iPhone. Only editing I did was adding a title. When asked to export I chosed HD. I then uploaded into Youtube and its blurry. I went back and exported it to Large (540) again - blurry. Tried Medium (360) as well and it was blurry again. Am I doing something wrong?

...So I decided to connect my iPhone to the computer and import the movie in true HD. I see the video on my computer in HD but when I upload the HD movie to YouTube through the web browser then movie is still blurry.
Shortly after uploading it to YouTube (via web browser) your video will be immediately available in a lower resolution quality.
You will have to *wait for YouTube to "Process" your HD video, before it becomes available in 720p*.
It can take anywhere from 1 to several hours.

  • Why can't I upload an imovie to youtube?

Once it finished, it says "waiting for acknowlegment" then does nothing.  I've tried "finalizing project" but always get error 49.

Alright if you have the video on your desktop, you will need to import it into iMovie first.  Make sure once its done importing that you can find your movie under one of your libraries.  If it still does not export strait to YouTube, try  exporting as "File" then to YouTube.

  • General question.Im trying to post my Imovie to youtube. How?
